Maureen Dowd Bares Bitter-Ending Bush- and Cheney-Despising Fangs, Only Embarrasses Self

NYTdowdPic0109When historians look back in wonder at how a long-established publication like the New York Times could have declined from its virtual king-of-the-world status in mid-2002 to its Bush-deranged, 85%-devalued shadow of its former self, they will surely make a few stops at Maureen Dowd's twice-weekly, lost-in-another-world columns (the Dowd picture is from the Times's web site).

Today's offering from Dowd (HT Hot Air Headlines) is intended to be a final figurative kick in the shins at George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, something she admits to fantasizing about having done to the Vice President this week when she had opportunities.

But the Dowd diatribe really ends up as a self-portrayal of someone who deeply imbibed the kool-aid her paper dished out over the past seven years and is beyond ever letting go, and serves as a microcosm of what the Old Gray Lady has done to itself in that same timeframe:

An Extremist Makeover?

In the past week, I’ve twice been close enough to Dick Cheney to kick him in the shins.

I didn’t. It’s probably a federal crime of some sort. But a girl can fantasize. I did, however, assume the Stay-away-from-me-you’ve-got-cooties stance that Jimmy Carter used when posing with Bill Clinton at the presidents’ powwow in the Oval.

The first time was Tuesday, when Cheney left the ceremony where he gave the oath of office to senators. The senators seemed thrilled, especially Joe Biden, who was getting sworn in for just two weeks and was excitedly showing off a family Bible the size of a Buick. But I thought it gave the ceremony a satirical edge to have the lawless Vice presiding over lawmakers swearing to support and defend the Constitution that he soiled and defiled — right in the heart of the legislative branch he worked to diminish.

The second time I crossed paths was Thursday night, at a glitzy party at Cafe Milano for Brit Hume, stepping down as a Fox anchor. It required extreme defensive maneuvers — much zigging and zagging — to avoid Cheney, Wolfie and Rummy, all three holding court and blissfully unrepentant about the chaos they’ve unleashed on the world.

..... After he leaves office, W. wants to go on more bike rides, because biking through Katrina was not enough.

..... The vamoosing Vice has no apologies about turning America into a country that tortured; indeed, he denies it ever happened. “Torture,” he told Barnes, “that word gets thrown around with great abandon.”

..... Cheney’s theory of executive “unitary” power and pre-emptive war and frightening the world was a theory of Constitutional thuggishness.

The fact is that the contentions Dowd's column are little different from the supposedly "objective" reports that have emanated from the Times's newsroom since early 2002:

  • Dogged insistence, forever memorialized as "fake but accurate," that the long-debunked Rathergate story, complete with phony documents and substantive refutations (here and here, for starters) is somehow still true.
  • The belief that Bush and Cheney soiled defiled the Constitution with, among other things, the FISA law. How inconvenient it is that no less than Barack Obama voted to keep FISA in place at crunch time.
  • The military "chaos" unleashed on the world. All you need to know on this topic is that the word "Iraq" doesn't appear in Dowd's column. And how about this: The president-elect, faced with ugly reality, is even getting cold feet about closing Gitmo. I guess doing that would be a little too chaotic compared to our current circumstances. Next thing you know, Obama, again realizing the dangers we face, will have a very, very quiet (and more than likely unreported) change of heart about certain interrogation methods.
  • Katrina? Oh stop it, Mo. The weak Katrina response was a failure of city and state officials first and foremost. Start by asking ex-Governor Kathleen Blanco why George Bush is to blame for these underwater buses.

The Times has lost much of its audience, almost all of its credibility, and perhaps its financial viability, during its seven-year infection with Bush Derangement Syndrome. You would think that with the inauguration of Barack Obama just 10 days away, there might be a bit of, well, hope in the hearts of folks like Dowd and others at the newspaper. But it appears that even a change in administrations won't bring an end to their all-consuming bitter-ender attacks, perhaps accompanied by the more bitter end of the newspaper itself.

Coming out of the sewer versus Coming out of the closet

I think it is best to say they are "coming out of the sewer," not the closet.

Coming out of the closet means that one is still embarrased to say what they really are.

Coming out the sewer, these MSM dudes and dudettes are proud of what they are and are proud to admit that they have always been a mean spirited bunch.

Dowd and others are coming out of the sewer, at last. Now, if they only realized the stench they make.

I can understand what MD is saying

Everytime I read one of her stupid screeds I want to reach through the computer and slap her sanctimoneous face until my hand hurts.  What a shrew she is. Torture is reading her tripe.

Maureen Dowd used to be a

Maureen Dowd used to be a good columnist, even if I didn't agree with her.

Now she just does "schtick"  And hateful schtick at that.

Agreed

We make a distinction between her political views and her sheer entertainment as a talented writer. She used to be fun to read. She must have been what William Safire was to liberals - completely wrong but always entertaining.

But I also agree that she's become a self-parody. Like a comic who's lost his edge, you can now see every joke coming.

The funny thing, though, is that she comes in waves. Back in the Clinton heyday, you could also predict what was coming. But once Bush came along and scrambled her comfort, she started being interesting again. Now she's back to being dull. Maybe another wave is coming.

Think Bitter Almonds when

Think Bitter Almonds when it comes to MoDo, the NYTs and all else related with this treasonous rag.

........to avoid Cheney,

........to avoid Cheney, Wolfie and Rummy, all three holding court and blissfully unrepentant about the chaos they’ve unleashed on the world.

Blissfully unrepentant-  that is one of the big crimes of the Bush administration as the media sees it.  They believe that they, the MSM are the one true voice and anyone who does not acknowledge it and pay homage to them is evil and must be destroyed. They are a dying industry because they cannot see their own arrogance.  They have built their own Tower of Babel and now because of their insufferable pride they will be scattered.

MA... I pray you are

MA...

I pray you are correct.

   Well newspapers are

Well newspapers are Dead Media Walking and the Alphabet Soup Networks audience is dying (literally).  Cable and New Media will inform the future generations, in fact they already do.  But.... like a horror film about a creature that cannot be killed the leftists will slyly run their propaganda aimed at the young and impressionable through movies, TV shows and 'Art'.  One of my big hopes is that with the demise of the Boomers from influence that instead of a fantasy of eternal youth the next generation will again resume maturity, soberness and responsibility as a rightful stage of maturity.

Right you are MA

I was thinking exactly the same thing as I read her exerts. What makes her think that her comments are true/correct? "lawless Vice"; "the Constitution that he soiled and defiled"; "the legislative branch he worked to diminish"; "turning America into a country that tortured"; "a theory of Constitutional thuggishness". These are all false charges that she, and her looney friends, seem to think are true. And so, just by uttering them, she tries to turn her opinion into fact -- that our President and Vice President are two of the most inhumane and vicious criminals ever to inhabit the planet.

Well, she's wrong. And the NYT is wrong for keeping her employed. And anyone who reads the NYT for news and the truth is wrong. It's simply amazing how quickly leftists can destroy anything they touch. Too bad for the NYT -- but it's become a shell of what it was once upon a time.

We need MORE

Yes, Maureen... it was wrong to remove a madman. Property rights of the Iraqi men have been severely limited -- what business is it of our what they do to their women??? They can now only beat their wives in private, where under Saddam, they could beat them in public too. Tired of your woman? Kill her! Absolutely legal. Enemies of the regime? Feed them into plastic shredders alive and listen to them scream.

So now that we know where you stand, what values you embrace, GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN AND BAKE ME SOME PIE!

How rich, Mo

It required extreme defensive maneuvers — much zigging and zagging — to avoid Cheney, Wolfie and Rummy

Yeah, I'm sure.  I bet they really took notice of an "important" NYT columnist "zigging and zagging" to avoid them.  How pathetically lame you are.  You really ought to be embarrassed to print that.

Who are they kidding

In the past week, I’ve twice been close enough to Dick Cheney to kick him in the shins.

Her problem

Look, we all know what Dowd’s real problem is. If she could get a date the problem would most likely disappear after about four or five days

I have actually seen Dowd

I have actually seen Dowd "in person," and she is definately using an old or highly touched up photo here. Unless she has had work done, then she has turned back time. I didn't even know who she was, and when I was told, I thought it was a lie. It wasn't.

I say it time we hold the

I say it time we hold the NYT to it's crimes against America.  Up to and including this skank.

Well, the good news is they won't be in business much longer, so I can just keep on ignoring the likes of Dowd.

Maureen Dowd is a symbol.

Maureen Dowd is a symbol of what the press has become.  The things that she says, in her columns, appear to reflect the view of the liberal media, for the most part.  To varying degrees, they believe everything Ms. Dowd says, that Cheney authorized torture, that he was breaking the law and that George Bush was responsible for Katrina's aftermath.

What the press has done is put small kernels of truth, in their stories, and then lie about their meaning.  It served it's purpose, we proudly have a President with low approval ratings, we now have a Democratic Congress and a Democratic President.  The ends have justified the means, in this case, for the media.

Now they have created a tangled web of lies and deceipt they will have to keep up with.  The voters, of Louisiana, knew the truth and Governor Blanco is no longer in office.  That she could get away with using politics, during Katrina, the way she did, showed me how in the tank the  press was for the Democrats.  They allowed the lies of Katrina to perpetuate and were directly responsible for many of them.

I'm not saying that all the press thinks like Maureen, I am saying it's a lot more than we know and a great many of them are members of the Washington Press Corps.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

Trapped Rats

Maureen Dowd would probably throw her sized-13 heeled hiking boots at the President if she ever got the chance.

And Dowd definitely puts another face to the failure that is the New York Times.

8 Loooonnng years. We are tired of it. ENOUGH!

No one drowns, starves, or dies of thirst for something they had 5 days warning. ENOUGH!

The 535 members of Congress had every right to declare war in Iraq. And they listed 23 reasons for doing so. ENOUGH!

It is not torture so SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN or I will pick up a power drill and introduce you to real torture. ENOUGH!

The only ones scared about FISA or the Patriot act are terrorists and dope smoking liberal hippies worried that the government will bust them with an ounce of dope. ENOUGH!

Gitmo is legal, and it is where we will keep extranationals bent on killing our civilians because they KNOW they cannot meet our military on the battlefield. ENOUGH!

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Well said. I agree 100%.

NYT is self-delusional

They like to think they're relevant - on top of things and more observant than anyone else and the champion of all things humanitarian and green - but in that thinking they've failed to notice an annoyingly obvious fact: every week, their weekend edition weighs in at about 5 pounds of cut trees. Oooops!

How many copies each weekend, times how many weekends, times how many trees, times, times, times... that's the New York Times.

Dowd

Actually its pretty pathetic. Here she is at another "glitzy" party....alone!...again!.... so she pretends she is such a hot commodoty that she is forced to zig and zag through all those important people who are fighting for her attention. Truth is they probably did not even notice her schlepping around talking to herself while writing down her clever quips and laughing at her own humor. I find her writing pretty thin for someone who has done this for such a period of time. It is schtick and not even good schtick. She has damn near run the wheels of her act and it is worn, tired, not funny nor clever. I am reminded of the woman on "Sex in the City" who is a columnist and her small circle of equally shallow, lonely friends. Dowd looks around for her old college buddies to support her assumptions and finds they have all grown up, moved on,  gotten married in spite of their pledges in college to never do that, and had families. She has become a caracature of herself. Too bad, she probably used to be a good looking old heifer but now she just comes off as weird and lonely, starved for respect and attention...any attention. NO one gives a RA but she keeps trying. She will still be tapping away when they turn the lights out at the NYT. In the end it will be just her and her cats...alone!...again!

IRONIC ISN'T IT?

She and her colleagues at the Old Gray Lady were so obsessed with destroying the administration, they ended up over-doing it and inadvertently doing it to themselves! (and shareholders too)

Ain't that a shame?

 sarc/off

At Least Dowd was early in line

I heard about this shrew long before Olby turned into a slavering, Quasimodo of hatred-spew.  So she accomplished an early arrival at BDS.  Other than that, she is of no consequence.  She is obviously not even intelligent.  She has that air of a really proficient gossip columnist who is being used to write political material.

[odd that conservatives are accused of hatred. . .REAL examples abound on MSNBC and in the pages of rags like NYT, conservatives tend to have a bit of politeness]

We can hope that the NYT goes away one of these days.  It will be illustrative of how people react when they realize that they cannot trust a word written in a particular newspaper.

Greetings

I believe we should show Maureen all the respect she deserves. When you are in her presence, you should greet her by saying "Howdy Doody Dowdy Dowd."  I am sure that will help her to become more introspective, don't you think?

Without a clue

  • Katrina? Oh stop it, Mo. The weak Katrina response was a failure of city and state officials first and foremost. Start by asking ex-Governor Kathleen Blanco why George Bush is to blame for these underwater buses.
  • That is exactly right and it burns me up when these liberal weenies refuse to blame the real culprit:  Ray Nagin.  If he had been a white guy and a republican he would have been torn apart.  And Blanco should have known the NO mayor was incompetent and should have taken charge of the situation.  The Bush administration was no way responsible for this tragedy.

    Thank God there's no chance

Thank God there's no chance she will be passing down the BDS gene.

    MoDo

As the NYT sinks slowly into the East River, perhaps MoDo can hook up with the Washington journalism professor and save "journalism" such as it is.  "but a girl can fantasize", right Modo? Is she going to yell into those big ears of Himself about his FISA vote?

    reading ms dowd's column

reading ms dowd's column truly reflects her lack of intelligence. a dummy like me, always looks behind the curtain(wizard of Oz) no matter what the topic it was GWB fault. fannie and freddie, katrina, all the topics, there ia always someone on the firing line who is guilty of malfeasance and misfeasance, who need to be accountable. Ms dowd, look to Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, the Mayor of New Orleans, Gov Of Louisiana. you may find someone who is guilty. The Congress and Senate are never accountable for any issue that falls apart. Take the bail out now that it appears no one was watching the store. It was GWB fault not the Senators or the Congressmen. When good times are here all is well, under present conditions none of these folks are competent to be in the Senate or Congress.
