AP Reporter Takes Gratuitous Shot at Sarah Palin's Church in Wake of 'Suspicious' $1 Million Fire There

Photo of Tom Blumer.

Wasilla Church FireThere was a fire Friday at Wasilla Bible Church, where GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family are members. The fire did $1 million in damage. The photo at the right is among three that are in a slide show at Wasilla's local paper, the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman, whose story is here.

The Washington Post has a short AP story at Page A02 (more on that shortly). The New York Times has nothing about it on its home page. A Times search on "Palin Church" (without quotes) leads to the same AP story; a review of today's print edition shows that the story appears on Page A41.

Does anyone think a similar fire at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, which Barack Obama attended for almost two decades until earlier this year, would have been as quietly covered -- even if Obama had lost?

Maybe it's just as well that the AP's coverage isn't too prominent yet, because Rachel D'Oro's story added an agenda-driven undercurrent in the last excerpted paragraph:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Gov. Sarah Palin's home church was badly damaged by arson, leading the governor to apologize if the fire was connected to "undeserved negative attention" from her failed campaign as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at $1 million, authorities said Saturday. No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to Central Mat-Su Fire Chief James Steele.

He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson but didn't know of any recent threats to the church. Authorities didn't know whether Palin's connection to the church was relevant to the fire, Steele said.

..... Palin, who was not at the church at the time of the fire, stopped by Saturday. Her spokesman, Bill McAllister, said in a statement that Palin told an assistant pastor she was sorry if the fire was connected to the "undeserved negative attention" the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate Aug. 29.

"Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good," McAllister said.

The 1,000-member evangelical church was the subject of intense scrutiny after Palin was named John McCain's running mate. Early in Palin's campaign, the church was criticized for promoting in a Sunday bulletin a Focus on the Family "Love Won Out Conference" in Anchorage. The conference promised to "help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome.

D'Oro had to work hard to get the Focus on the Family dig in. As would be expected, Greg Johnson's coverage at the local Frontiersman said nothing about the Sunday bulletin ad, nor did the lengthier coverage at the Anchorage Daily News. Of course not: It has no relevance to the story. It's hard to avoid concluding that D'Oro's purpose was to "helpfully" remind us that (in her opinion) the church is a haven for bigots.

Well Tom

Whoever did this is a piece of vermin. Hopefully the people responsible will be caught and brought to justice.

I did not find anything wrong with the article, it just shows reasons why someone might have a beef with the church, deserved or not.

He had my vote

Sorry Shawn, no sale

You could come up with 1,000 reasons why someone might have had a beef with the church, personal or political. She chose one out of the blue that was barely noted during the campaign and decided that it was THE one that required mention.

Reporters on the ground in Alaska saw no such need. Why? D'Oro has an agenda.

Stop making excuses for drop-dead obvious bias.

Disagree Tom

I live in California and Prop 8 has sparked some very violent feelings and protest.

Lots of damaged property and vandalism because of people's yes vote on prop 8.

Focus on the family and the Churches views toward homosexuals  might not have been the reason, but a big possibility.

He had my vote

We're going to have to agree to disagree ...

... the authorities won't speculate, but D'Oro decides that she can in a supposedly "objective" news piece. IMO that's way out of bounds.

I'm pretty sure that arson

I'm pretty sure that arson of an occupied building is considered attempted first-degree murder. Since the target was a church, it's probably also a federal civil-rights investigation by now.

The BATFE and FBI will be all over this.

The losers who did this, for whatever reason, will never know what hit them. They're in the big leagues now, where US Marshals don't politely knock on their doors and ask them nicely to place their hands behind their back. Their return addresses for the next decade or so will begin with 'Federal Correctional Institution'.

For the record, this is not automatically a retaliation against Sarah. There are some pretty low-rent punks up there in the Great White North. In the past, someone actually cut the brake lines on one or more of Wasilla's schoolbuses.

NOLI PUGNARE ME OCCIDERE

Blame the correct people, Shawn

Shawn

Using your logic, it is the church and family focused people who are at fault for the damages.

The popular vote of yes to ban was the majority. The citizens who voted no cannot accept being voted down, and therefore, do damage. It is the ones' doing that damage that is at fault, not the ones' who have the majority vote of yes. Non-acceptance of a majority vote and doing damage is the problem, not the family focused people or the church.

All of the people that voted for Obama are now saying to those that did not, tough luck, get over it. Well, it is a two way street.

The biggest problem is that people on the no side don't seem to understand that the majority vote of yes IS A FORM OF PROTEST against the "common acceptance" of same-sex marriage. And the vote of yes proves yet again, that "common acceptance" is not in the majority.

Now I will return to the church arson issue. Those that cannot handle the fact that people don't think like them are doing something to prove their point. Which is in a manner which is not helpful to their side.

There is something worse than a sore-loser. And it seems to be all of the sore-winners.

Shawn...

I think the problem with the article is that the reporter had to qualify that remark.

They could print that it may have been about Palin because there was a source saying she felt bad if it was done because of her. A source that would go on record.

The position that it may have been about a Focus on the Family aspect could also be taken, but they would need to qualify it by either interviewing a person from that organization or from the church that could put forth that position. Reporters are not supposed to think for the reader, they are supposed to just put forward evidence. Usually, some background information like that would be fine, but as a motivation for the attack it must be quantified.

Let me put it this way. Let's say you get a computer virus here at NB. I write an article about it (slow news day and all,) I could say:

"Shawn is usually a person that disagrees with alot of conservative people, most notably he had a disagreement with So and So..." Now then I'd have to talk to you or him about that argument. Even then, it would be shaky ground.

Now if I said:

"Shawn is perhaps best known as a defender of Senator John McCain on a site that is unfriendly to him." And I did that without talking to you, or anybody else for that matter, I just left it at that.

The problem there is that I've interjected my own opinion not only about you and your attacker, but this site as a whole. Without evidence, or even an interview, I've basically told everybody that you had it comming to you, and that NB is intolerant of outside opinions to the point of cyber-attacks. Especially if I end the article with that statement.

Hope that clears it up. Also, sorry the post was so long.

Mike

Shawn, If the situations

Shawn, If the situations were reversed, a "Chicago" fire would not be heralded as the fault of Obama's failed candidacy.   It would be labeled as a hate crime perpetuated by the intolerant opponents of Obama.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Is this the latest from

Is this the latest from those guardians of American tolerance and peaceful understanding of all peoples, the Radical Gay Left? Looks as if they've become "inclusive" by persecuting Protestants now as well as Mormons. But then, is it REALLY a crime for gays to hate , burn or kill??, after all, they are the leaders of the Obamanation.

It's ashame...

had Rachel D'Oro been more Johnny-on-the-spot, she could've covered the fire from the interior of the Church, rather than dousing it with gasoline from the outside.

Cheap Shot

I will continue to advocate a boycott of all print media for this very reason. The MSM can't even win with  grace.

Buying a newspaper is like paying somebody to lie to you. Boycott your local newspaper.

The Kansas City Star recently announced a third round of layoffs. Keep up the good work.

Jesse and Al

The burning of this church is an outrage. It is a hate crime. I understand Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are going up there tomorrow to organize a protest march against this kind of thing.---NOT!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Can I blame the mean

Can I blame the mean spirited media (MSM) for causing this fire?  They've caused a lot of firestorm (no pun intended) over Palin's selection as GOP VP nominee....

Good morning semolina and iveseenitall

You won't see any outrage in the MSM. This is the wrong kind of church. If it was a.... never mind.

If it were Rev. Wright's

If it were Rev. Wright's "church" ... Barbara Boxer would be on the Senate floor asking for TARP funds to repair it

Isn't that the truth?

There would also be a national day of mourning; Jeremiah Wright would be given a Nobel Peace Prize and we'd all sing kumbaya....nah!

I hope there is some way we will be able to send funds and other help to this church in their time of need.  We'll be praying for them.

Abortion clinic fire...

Abortion clinic arson would get weeks of coverage and our beloved media would not settle down until one or more people were hanged by the neck. Hey, it's just Christians under attack. The arsonist has a lot in common with Islamic terrorists...attack anyone who is not you. And the MSM cheers...hey, we 'asked for it". Right? I'll ask "Rev." Wright for an opinion.

I yam what I yam....Popeye.

Motive

At least D'oro admitted the obvious, there is Motive for the Fire from the Left. In a blog last night I wrote about the Alaskan coverage, since the MSM hadn't picked it up yet. And the Anchor kept phrasing and rephrasing to get confirmation that they had "no suspects or plausible motive".

If this happened at Trinity, the Motive would Be the Story....

Interesting question

NB does ask a very interesting question about how much attention the media would have given if Obamas former church had been a victim of arson. Quite a bit I suspect.

I've heard about all I care

I've heard about all I care to hear about the Prop 8 protesters.  There's damn sure a way to stop them in their tracks, but as usual no one has the spine to take that next step.

They'll find out who did this to Sarah's church.  It probably didn't have a thing to do with what D'Oro was hoping it did. Just some maniac.

The attack on Christians in America continues.  As the mullas laugh their guts out.

Are we going to put up with it much longer?

Do tell

Gee, Rex, what step could that POSSIBLY be?  Oh I wonder.  Why don't you go and do it, Rex?  I'm sure you have the spine for it, old boy.  You're military, you're USA, the bravest of the brave.  C'mon, go for it.  You talk the talk, do you walk the walk?

Loonies on the left will do anything (and I mean anything) to gain power and intimidate opponents (especially capable ones). And, the media will do anything in its power to support them. The demise of the nation's last newspaper can't come soon enough for me.

Has anyone seen...

Has anyone seen Rahm this weekend? Just asking...

The answer to terrorism IS war. Next Please!

If we find out the fire

If we find out the fire was started using fish oil as an accelerant, then Rahmbo's whereabouts might be worth investigating. :D

"to help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome"

There is nothing "bigoted" whatsoever here, especially when considering the explicit pronouncements found in the Christian Bible.  Sounds like good old fashioned Christian charity to me.

Why is this NOT a hate

Why is this NOT a hate crime, it seems like it was in Boston.. when a black church goes down..

Investigation my a$$

It is not a black church and, they teach conservative and moral conduct. There will be no investigation because it does not fit the liberal democratic ideals.
