Those who thought that President-elect Obama's pre-Thanksgiving promise to "create or save jobs," appropriately satirized by Mark Finkelstein at NewsBusters on November 24, might have been another one of the Oh-So-(in)Articulate One's "inartful" statements should know that it has become standard fare in Obama speeches.
In related news, Uncle Sam told us Friday that over 136 million seasonally adjusted jobs were "saved"in November (go here to replicate):
Never mind the 533,000 seasonally adjusted jobs lost -- which illustrates just how risible Obama's promise shift from the presidential campaign really is. Old Media's failure to note this shift is journalistic malpractice that would never occur during a Republican presidency.
First, I'll quote Obama's radio address (I'll leave to commenters to discuss the propriety of his doing such addresses before assuming office), followed by the Associated Press's coverage of it. Finally, I'll prove, as much as a negative statement can be proven, that Obama never used the phrase "create or save" or anything close to it during the campaign.
From Obama's address (bolds are mine):
..... But we need action – and action now. That is why I have asked my economic team to develop an economic recovery plan for both Wall Street and Main Street that will help save or create at least two and a half million jobs, while rebuilding our infrastructure, improving our schools, reducing our dependence on oil, and saving billions of dollars.
..... These are a few parts of the economic recovery plan that I will be rolling out in the coming weeks. When Congress reconvenes in January, I look forward to working with them to pass a plan immediately. We need to act with the urgency this moment demands to save or create at least two and a half million jobs so that the nearly two million Americans who’ve lost them know that they have a future. And that’s exactly what I intend to do as President of the United States.
Here is a portion of the Bloomberg's coverage:
President-elect Barack Obama said he’ll make the “single largest new investment” in roads, bridges and public buildings since the Eisenhower Administration to lift the sagging economy and create jobs.
Obama, in his weekly radio speech today, said his plan to create or preserve 2.5 million jobs will also include making public buildings more energy efficient, repairing schools and modernizing health care with electronic medical records.
Aside: Why did Bloomberg's Hans Nichols use a word Obama didn't utter once in his speech?
Here are some relevant search results from before the election:
- Google News archives, Jan. 1, 2006 thorugh Nov. 3, 2008, search on [Obama "save or create"] (typed as indicated within brackets) -- nothing.
- Google News archives, same date range, search on [Obama "save and create"] -- One result at a Pittsburgh radio station's site looking forward to a debate between Obama and Hillary Clinton ("Both candidates will discuss their positions on foreign trade and how they plan to save and create jobs"). This obviously has nothing relating to what Obama might have actually said later.
- Google News archives, same date range, search on [Obama "create or save"] -- One result irrelevant to the search for a comprehensive promise, listed twice, where Obama apparently told Charlie Rose that some unspecificed action did not "Create or save a single job."
- Google News archives, same date range, search on [Obama "create and save"] (typed as indicated within brackets) -- nothing.
- Google News archives, same date range, search on [Obama "create or protect"] (typed as indicated within brackets) -- nothing.
- Google News archives, same date range, search on [Obama "create or preserve"] (typed as indicated within brackets) -- nothing.
- New York Times -- the same six searches yielded nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, and nothing.
The relevant page on the economy at Obama's presidential campaign site is littered with references to creating jobs, including "5 million green jobs." There is one narrow exception, but it's not a promise; instead it is an observation that something called the Manufacturing Extention Partnership has "helped create and protect over 50,000 jobs."
The conclusion based on the searches is obvious: Candidate Obama promised only to create jobs, while President-elect Obama is okay with merely saving them. This is a bar lowering of historic proportions that the press wants to pretend doesn't exist. It does, and their failure to note it is yet another reason why their slide to irrelevance and/or bankruptcy can't happen quickly enough.

It's a simple case of....
December 7, 2008 - 11:04 ET by motherbeltThat explanation is no longer operative. - George Stephanopoulos
Regarding the "propriety" of Obama's acting like he's already President...it's plain that he wants the trappings, but when pressed for a solution and details on a problem, he slips into "We only have one President at a time" mode.
OK, then he should just, to put it politely, keep silent until Jan. 20,
Always an excuse. We all
December 7, 2008 - 21:56 ET by GregEAlways an excuse. We all remember the "that's above my pay grade" non-answer. Now it's "We only have one president at a time" when that is to his benefit. What's after Jan 20? Perhaps, 3 years of, "its the result of the failed Bush administration."
I sure hope community organizing is just like being president.

So that's it, that's what all the mystery was about? The magical economic team with their magical plans -- Build everyone a bridge to nowhere.
Who knew, surly not the dimwitted Obama voters. But I bet they knew in Kenya.

December 7, 2008 - 12:17 ET by SentryDanJobs, jobs, Obama can't create no freakin' jobs. Obama can't create anything but hate for the country and/or government. He can ask Congress for the money to award contracts to companies who will create the jobs. But where is Congress going to get the money? From the taxpayers, you and me, friends. So in effect, we are creating our own jobs, Obama isn't.

Obama's Jobs Promise
December 7, 2008 - 17:37 ET by OliveGive him enough rope and he will hang himself. But, it is strange how no-one on his team is saying a word. This is very unhelpful to Obama. The press don't care either. yep I think he will hang himself if no-one else does.
And he's already saying
December 7, 2008 - 21:51 ET by RR GOPAnd he's already saying that the worst is yet to come. Did FDR say that, too or did he say things would get better? Curious...
So, he's covered himself.
And if he, teamed up with a Dem controlled Congress (if Republicans ran it, I would blame him a lot less down the road, but even then Congress can do only so much positively considering the economy-as we have seen with Frank, et al and the CRE they can actually do immense damage on their own), screws up royally, who's going to complain?
Obama voters won't know about it. Shoot, Pelosi and Frank have been up there blaming Republicans though it's the Democrats that control the joint-and the ever gullible buy it. Now, that's if and a big if, they ever bother watching the news, because, after all, the news is boring...Bread and Circuses.
But, at what point in time will people realize that it wasn't President Bush and the Republicans who caused this mess? Sure, the Republicans have been for the most part whimps, but these billions of dollars of unsound housing loans have really screwed everything up. I believe, again, most Obama/Democrat voters aren't aware of that, don't understand it, or simply don't want to hear it. Frank gettin re-elected should speak volumes about where their heads are.

December 27, 2008 - 21:47 ET by TinkerbelldustI'm very aware that President Bush didn't make this mess.
It started with the Clinton's.
Unfortunately Obama is going to be another dim bulb in the mix.
The only thing Obama is going to do is tank us even more. More if they grant amnesty.
He's a full fledge narcissist along with Madoff.

December 7, 2008 - 22:15 ET by SentryDanWell, we can only blame the schools for not teaching American Government and Civics. I guess these subjects are to tough for the poor students that can't read or don't want to learn. I guess they aren't diverse enough.
Things are pretty bad when college freshmen and seniors and well as members of Congress don't know how their own government works.
It is time to through all this political correct and diversity crap into the trash can where it belongs and get back to teaching the basics. And if the buggers can't pass the tests fail them, hold them back for a year. Make them go to summer school. Sorry, I'm from the old school and damn proud of it.
