"The View" co-host Joy Behar is well on her way to unhinged, if not already there.
Earlier today, NB's Justin McCarthy noted that Behar, in mentioning GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, said that "we all know that the woman is an airhead."
Michelle Malkin noted this evening that Behar also took an uncalled-for cheap shot at those who are involved in an important and growing alternative not only to the public schools, but also to traditional brick-and-mortar classroom education (video is at link):
Behar show(ed) .... her contempt for both homeschooled students and parents: “A lot of them are demented when they’re homeschooled.”
If this is "dementia" by Behar's twisted standards, perhaps we need more of it.
An article Ms. Malkin linked by Richard Sousa of the Hoover Institution that originally appeared in the June 11, 2007 San Francisco Chronicle documents some of the successes achieved by homeschoolers:
Let’s hear it for the home team—they have done it again. In May, 13-year-old Evan O’Dorney of Danville, California, won the National Spelling Bee; Evan is homeschooled. Of those who made it to the finals in Washington, D.C., 12.5 percent were homeschooled; of the top seven finishers, three were homeschooled. Last year, 13.5 percent of those making it to the Bee finals were homeschooled.
Evan is not alone as a high-achieving homeschooled child. The 2003 and 2005 National Geographic Bee champions were homeschooled. In 2005, a 16-year-old homeschooled child won the U.S. Chess Championship, making him the youngest player to claim the title since 14-year-old Bobby Fischer won it in 1958. And they’re athletic to boot; the 2005 girls Gatorade high school soccer player of the year was homeschooled. Remember, homeschools enroll only a small percentage of America’s children.
..... The number of students who are home-schooled is a matter of some dispute, but it is clear that their numbers are increasing and that the performance of homeschooled children is outstanding.
..... Comparisons in achievement tests of homeschooled students with national averages for all students show that homeschooled children are well above the national average in every subject and at every grade level in the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and in Tests of Achievement and Proficiency.
By now, it's not exactly a secret that the election of Barack Obama has been "empowering" in a negative sense to some who supported him. Certain of those who on the November 4 the winning side threaten that "you're either with us or against us," which begs the question, "or what?" (George Bush never made this statement to the American people, but instead delivered it in September 2001 to nations harboring terrorists). Same-sex marriage advocates shake down businesses where any employees dared to even nominally financially support Proposition 8, and work to end the careers of anyone in the performing arts who did the same.
Behar's comment is perhaps inadvertently significant, in that it comes from someone who, as Malkin noted, used to be (O .... M .... G) a public-school teacher. Is Behar mouthing the sentiments of emboldened public-school establishment teachers and their unions? Knowing that there is little to fear in the way of repercussions from Washington, where the Big Labor-beholden Democrats run the show, is the effort to cut off the homeschooling movement at the knees going to grow more aggressive in the coming years? I'd bet that it will.

November 20, 2008 - 00:30 ET by marvlThe ladies on The View are all a bunch of demented old harpies. They routinely run off at the mouth making irresponsible statements and outrageous claims. I don't understand how a responsible TV network can let them do this.
As for homeschooled children, the ones I have known have all been well educated and level headed. They are a testament to how well homeschooling can work and how significantly public schooling does not work.
Public schools are destroying America
November 20, 2008 - 00:33 ET by garyganuMost universities, public schools, the media, and artists; question, reject and vilify, anything that supports our traditional American culture. They do not accept the premise that America has grown to become the freest, wealthiest and most benevolently powerful nation that the world has ever seen. They use convoluted logic, quote questionable statistics, take quotes out of context, either suppress or emphasize various information and use emotion to make their arguments, but they overlook the obvious truth, reason and common sense. Often they use examples which are the "least likely scenario". They often vilify their ideological opponents with charges of racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, bigotry, and greed. Often this tactic is successful in silencing their opposition. These tactics work best for them , because reason, commonsense and personal experience are often not compatible with their conclusions. What is most troubling, is that an honest search for truth is rarely seen.
I see the bricks, that form the foundation of this nation's greatness, being removed one by one. We are on the road to becoming a third rate corrupt and poor nation, like Mexico, Cuba and Venezuela. It is sad to see this happening before my very eyes. What is saddest, is that this downhill spiral, from American exceptionalism to economic and spiritual bankruptcy, is being led by today’s students and the universities, media and artists, that fill their heads with propaganda which they call "progressive".

November 20, 2008 - 12:09 ET by Spinningplates2Joy is a real goof but she did not say "ALL" homeschoolers are demented. As I say not ALL homeschoolers are setting the world on fire. I worked in the homeschool movement for 15 years and it has more then it's share of problem children (and parents) because it is really over-sold. People are led to believe that anyone can do it and everyone should try because in many cases they are told that if they do not homeschool their children then, "either you do not love Christ, America, or your children."
I agree that there are
November 20, 2008 - 13:28 ET by sherylsimsI agree that there are *some* very strange people who homeschool. However, these people would still be strange if they didn't homeschool, so for everyone's best interest it is good that they are doing what they can (for whatever reason) to educate their children. The bottom line is, demented or not, it is the PARENT'S responsibility to see that their children get the best education available. Lets see some statistics on how many "demented" kids there are in the public schools right now. As far as homeschooling being "oversold" I don't believe that for a minute. Every group has the fringies. They wouldn't be any better off in public school.

November 20, 2008 - 01:21 ET by soulpileI was homeschooled for two years of my youth. Does that make me demented or did I manage to escape insanity according to Behar? For the rest of my schooling afterwards, I really missed homeschool as I learned so much more than I did in a classroom.
Personally, I've always believed that the "traditional" schools (ie public, age grading, etc) don't work. Especially because of the seperation forced between the age groups (ie - you can only be taught certain subjects at certain ages - math, science, reading, foreign language...).

November 20, 2008 - 06:51 ET by GeneZYeah, homeschooling is terrible. That's why my daughter did well enough on the ACT & SAT to have Yale ask her to apply (among many other schools). She was 95th or higher percentile in all areas. (right now she is working thru a history of philosophy course, as part of what we cover in worldviews of the western world)
My son who is in 9th grade, already tested at a 12th grade reading level and is taking an intro college computer programming course.
All of my kids are rude & mouthy too (not!). They probably scare Joy because most homeschoolers are fairly confident of themselves and comfortable talking to adults on a fairly equal level. (actually, they probably talk above her.)

November 20, 2008 - 07:45 ET by motherbeltIt always amazes me how some people will say things about which they have no clue.
That's a liberal characteristic. Then they usually end their idiotic rant with "That's a fact."
If you watch the video (click on the Michelle Malkin link; she has it there, start at about 7:00)...first Joy suggests that they be educated in the WH and then makes her "demented" comment (take that however you wish LOL). She also dismisses public schools with the "a lot of crazy people who want to do things" comment, as if no one would EVER think of going after a President's kids if they were at a private school.
Every time Joy opens her mouth, she shows more ignorance.
That's NOT the test!
November 20, 2008 - 08:50 ET by AJBThe true test of success or failure of home schooling rests in the following questions:
CAN YOUR HOME SCHOOLED CHILD:
1. demonstrate the correct way to pray to mecca?
2. tell you 101 ways that Europeans are evil and what deeds they did to those poor oppressed minorites?
3. give an oral biography on the great Americans Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Ceasar Chavez?
4. give a history of the evils of Christianity and why they're evil hate mongering homophobes?
5. tell how the stolen land they purportedly 'bought' from the beneficent and benevolent Native Americans was defiled for profit?
6. tell how modern saints like Barney Frank makes a living on the side providing safe houses for gay sex for profit?
7. show how health care in America MUST be free for anyone who demands it? For life? And after?
8. show how redistribution of wealth is the future?
9. show how you can confuse what the word 'is' is? and why oral sex is not really sex, nor adultery?
10. demonstrate the proper way to roll on condoms?
If not, then OBVIOUSLY your child has NOT been successfully schooled. What did you waste your time teaching your ignorant kids? Math? Science? History? WHAT a waste!

November 20, 2008 - 07:54 ET by sawing battathe only proof points i have on home school are two families - in different parts of the country, with different backgrounds, beliefs, values, etc.
in both cases, the kids run circles around their peers. the education they receive is so far superior to the 'lowest common denominator' philosophy in public schools, that it makes me think that Joy is more worried about protecting teachers than kids.
the teachers union is such a powerful force in liberalism (the examples of the junk taught in schools on this site alone are many) that a good liberal like joy must protect them and attack anything that challenges their power.

November 20, 2008 - 08:52 ET by ckbennetttnWhat a complete and total moron she is. My oldest child (14) wants to be a rocket scientist, and my 9 yr old is a piano prodigy. We also have 7 and 5 year olds. They all score off the chart in standardized testing. Yet, they are not straight A students (could it be because we do not merely distribute grades?). We are routinely complimented by people telling us how well-behaved our children are, even by folks at church. Of course, there are those who ask about "socialization." My response is always, "Why would I want to socialize my children to what goes on in public school?"
By the way, any homeschooler should be a member of HSLDA-Homeschool Legal Defense Association. I believe we will see more legal issues for homeschoolers in the very near future.

November 20, 2008 - 08:53 ET by sherylsimsIf ever I had a doubt about my decision to spend my life investing in my children by homeschooling them (Starting with my oldest son about 26 years ago and will be continuing through my youngest daughter for about 7 or 8 more years) then just knowing that Joy Behar is against it has removed all doubt. I am proud of my "accomplishments" in education, and further, my children are far more well-adjusted and well-educated than the offspring of my friends and acquaintences who sent theirs off to the government training camps to be educated (and experimented upon). I am positive homeschoolers will have some legal battles in the next four years because all the opposition to the liberal viewpoint comes from those who actually know the difference between capitalism and socialism and who understand the purpose of the constitution. Students who have been taught about the courage and heroism of our forefathers who came to this country not for freedom FROM religion but for freedom OF religion. I don't want to send my kids to school to spend their time learning how to put a condom on a banana. I want them to be equipped to face the real world when they grow up. But now, thanks to this past semester, ALL doubt has been removed.

November 20, 2008 - 09:43 ET by moderncommentaries83I've met several and know many through the blogosphere. They are all very intelligent (a homeschooled kid won the Scripps Spelling Bee a year or two ago), confident, well-socialized (with their peers and adults), mature, responsible, and - above all - well-formed in their family's faith traditions.
Which is probably the problem Behar has with homeschooling. It prevents her (a former teacher) and her cohorts from getting their claws on children, indoctrinating them into liberalism, undermining parental authority, and belittling religious upbringing.
So I guess being happy, loved, and all the other good things that come with homeschooling are "demented" when you're a bitter, anti-religion, aging, irrelevant feminist.
She's Daft.
November 20, 2008 - 10:06 ET by CrashNot that she was properly schooled, but, is Beher telling us that she was home schooled?
Does she KNOW?
November 20, 2008 - 10:16 ET by AJBDoes she then know first hand that they are DEMENTED? Like her? I bet she does!! But she's just projecting her dementia onto the others so she doesn't feel quite so bad.
Yes she is a complete moron
November 20, 2008 - 10:46 ET by TexasteacherYes she is a complete moron and a partisan hack. Just the mere mention of her name makes me sick.
However, not all teachers are liberal indoctrinators.
I stand to lose money over stuff like this and I still say yay! to homeschooling, private/charter schools, etc.
There is no "one way" to educate children. You have to put them where they will have the best chance of success for them.
You may now resume Behar bashing.

November 20, 2008 - 11:24 ET by TexasteacherI wonder the same thing sometimes considering my district is about to be in a heap of trouble for using fake SSN's to hire foreigners. On top of the 5,000 other things going wrong.

WE DON'T NEED NO EDUCATION...
November 20, 2008 - 13:51 ET by danybhoyUnlike some of those who are on The View, those homeschooled kids can not only tell you what SUFFRAGE is, they can spell it as well. Almost every kid who wins the national spelling bee are almost always homeschooled. Sherri & Whoopi are too damn dumb to vote & should lose their right to suffrage. I'm just saying...
I also have a problem with the fact that only 1 of the 3 R's is actually spelled with an R to start with. It's only gotten worse since I left school, & if the NEA & the state teachers unions stay dug in like a deer tick, things will not change.

November 20, 2008 - 13:24 ET by Hunter12Tom, The only reason to care would be that this show is probably where a lot of people got the information that help them form the opinion on who to vote for. Let's see a panel from The View where Whoopi and Joy take their salaries and pump them into the stock market to back their man.

Behar
November 20, 2008 - 16:45 ET by divasmomThe participants on 'the view' are there solely because they create reactions such as these posted here. They are an intolerant few who are loud, garish and bigoted ego-maniacs. This being said, they are not anymore rabid than the women in the audience who sit there like empty-headed dunces and applaud and laugh at the comtemptable garbage that foams from their mouths. I never watch these creatures..they are not representative of American women....they are an anomaly. To attack home schooling, Sarah Palin, etc. shows that "Joy and Co." are all class.....low, that is.
Mental Illness
November 20, 2008 - 16:53 ET by Ozark_SunshineFunny, a leading American psychologist has written a paper proving that liberalism is a mental illness. Now we know why Joy, Barbara and Whoopi act the way they do. They are the Forrest Gumps of TV.
It's sad that so many
November 20, 2008 - 18:08 ET by RR GOPIt's sad that so many parents want to home school. Heck, I'm a public school teacher and have considered it myself. We cannot guarantee the safety of these kids and the system is geared up for getting them through whether they learn or not. We cannot teach morals and enforcing basic classroom discipline requires a thorough review of the Constitution for many teachers throughout the country. To be fair, many conservative parents are part of the problem, too, not the solution.
Figures Behar and the other Communists don't like home schooling. It removes children from the Social Collective and the Marxist ideology that filters down from Bill Ayers, Ward Churchil, and Co. Take heart...many of us are fighting this garbage and don't buy into it, but so many do. They mean well, but their idealism has been co-opted by Communist education programs, textbooks filled with Leftist ideology, and PC in general.
If a parent doesn't want their kid taught evolution, I feel they're out of luck. But if they feel their kids' religious convictions, safety and education itself is in jeopardy, then I can't blame them.

It's easy to pick out homeschooled children
November 20, 2008 - 18:26 ET by EricTheRedI don't know any homeschooled children personally, but you know them when they call a talk radio show. I've heard homeschooled kids call up Rush or Mark or Sean and it's always the same:
That's the difference.
Again, Joy Behar has put her foot in her intolerant, hateful, ignorant mouth. No surprise she used to be a public school teacher. Those who can't do teach. Those who can't teach become a host on "The View."

November 20, 2008 - 18:41 ET by RR GOP"Those who can't do teach."
Sooooo...does that include the parents who taught these wonderful home schooled children so well?
So, if we took all the home school parents and put them in to the schools, that obnoxious saying would still apply? I taught in private school and in public...was I automatically a better teacher when I taught private? Would I be an even better teacher if I went parochial? Am I not the same teacher?
Interesting...illogical, but interesting.
With all of the education experts out there who aren't in education, it's a wonder we haven't had everything fixed already. How about a little support for standards, discipline and getting this Communist BS out of the education system...or, get your butt in the classroom and show the rest of us 'can't do-ers' how it's done. We anxiously await that enlightenment.

November 20, 2008 - 19:25 ET by LeftCoastRightieThis just shows that there is hardly any standards for teachers, although there are some good teachers out there.
I wonder what's more destructive Blohar on the small screen or in the classroom. Either way she is a menace.

I support Vouchers but not homeschooling
November 21, 2008 - 07:34 ET by PopularTechThe problem with homeschooling is what if the parents are idiots? This is why I prefer vouchers so you have some remote sort of hiring process for people with some qualifications but still give the parents a choice besides public schools.

The parents would have to
November 21, 2008 - 10:30 ET by sherylsimsThe parents would have to be REALLY bad to be worse than some of the teachers I have met. And if they were, who is going to decide whether or not they have a right to educate their own children? To deny millions of qualified families the right to raise and educate their children in whatever way they see fit on account of the very few who might not be (according to some) "idiots" is not only unfair, it is a slap in the face to our American values and freedoms. Maybe some people who are homeschooling shouldn't me. But it is NOT the government's job to decide that.
