Post-Election News Business Layoffs Begin; Time and Current Lead the Charge

Photo of Tom Blumer.

Well, they held out as long as the could. But now that the presidential election is over, layoffs in the news business have begun.

Newsosaur predicted as much on the Sunday before the election, and pointed to a major reason:

Public confidence in the mainstream media has been eroding for at least a decade.

The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press reported that only 19% of respondents trusted their local newspapers in 2006, as compared with 29% in 1998. In the same period, trust in national newspapers slid to 21% from 32%, broadcast news fell to 22% from 27% and cable news slipped to 25% from 37%. Confidence in the National Enquirer, however, doubled to 6%.

Job losses announced at Time Inc., which went through a significant shrinkage just two years ago, and Al Gore's Current Media are among the first in what will almost certainly be a long line of similar reports in the coming months.

Here, from Ad Week, is a capsule of what's going down at Time:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

.... Time Inc. is moving to the rank-and-file as it, like other publishers, seeks to reduce its workforce in the face of dropping ad revenue.

Some of Time Inc.’s biggest magazines have put out the call for at least 83 volunteers to take buyouts, according to memos and staffers at the company. The news comes as part of the company’s previously announced restructuring and plan to cut its headcount by about 600, or roughly 6 percent of the Time Inc.’s worldwide workforce of 10,200.

Sports Illustrated said it is looking for about 40 Newspaper Guild and non-guild volunteers from the editorial side. People is seeking 23 volunteers and Time magazine about 20. Fortune and Money are also looking for volunteers from guild members, but did not specify a number.

Volunteers are asked to come forth by Dec. 1 to avoid involuntary layoffs.

Other, non-Guild cuts are expected to be made throughout the company’s 24 U.S. titles today.

Here' a bit of what CNet reported on the situation at Current:

A source close to Current told CNET News on Tuesday that 20 percent of the staff has been cut, and that some of the layoffs will take place now and others in January. Current had announced less than a day ago that it had partnered with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. to bring its network to Canada.

A statement from Current indicates that the number of employees cut is lower than the 20 percent that our source provided: "Approximately 60 positions have been eliminated in the company's three U.S. offices, and approximately 30 new positions created," the statement read. "Many of those whose positions were eliminated have been placed in the new positions. Current will have approximately 410 employees (after these staffing adjustments)."

..... "Not only was this uncalled for, but there was continuous deliberation during the last two or three months," the former employee said. "Every meeting we've had with the VP of our department has been a lot of 'Don't worry, your positions are secure.' And that has been repeated for the last two to three months."

..... (Just last week, Al Gore) gave a speech at the Web 2.0 Summit in which he touched upon how he hopes Current will solve some of the problems plaguing the television news industry.

Whatever problems Current intends to solve, it's evident that it plans to do so with fewer people.

Whether it's 30, 60 or 100 jobs lost, the irony of management at Al Gore's pet project fooling employees into thinking their positions are safe -- a classic complaint lodged against "evil corporations," should not be lost on anyone.

Lib radio

Lib radio failed and now the print wing is following. NYT has a junk rating for its stock with very poor prospectsalong with LAT and others. Good old Al, couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

I wonder if Al has enough clout to get a Bailout package going for the lefty media?

It must be

George Bush's fault.

Sport Illustrated......

was the only one I cancelled, when they came out with their "Gobal Warming" issue. I told them the only reason I bought their mag was to read about sports, only sports. I doubt they have changed their ways. BTW, I got in on a deal last year my local conservative leaning paper had, 52 bucks a year, 7 days a week, for life. Gee, I hope they don't go under because I really enjoy their Sudoku puzzles.

Hey, modeling is a spectator sport, right?

So, you didn't cancel when you received the swimsuit edition? ;)

My guess is that most people

My guess is that most people don't read newspapers primarily for the front page "news" anymore.  We prefer the sports page (news, in a way, of course), classifieds, comics, sales info, crosswords, Suduko, letters to the editor. Front page news? Not so much, unless it's very local or about someone we know.

It's the economy stupor!

I can't tell you how many folks I'v spoken with who are planning a personal spending freeze over the next four years, based on Obama's election rhetoric. The "economic crisis" hasn't seen it's worst. If Pelosi/Reid style leadership has taught us anything ... the majority of the American people are really stupid. After all they voted for "hope" & "change" over courage and leadership.

That sucking sound we hear is from the top 1% going liquid and pouring out of the country.

Hard Times

http://www.associate...

The homeless population can increase to an estimated 15 million by 2011 because mortgage foreclosures and unemployment will keep rising. The government might come to the rescue by requisitioning idle living space in private homes. Those with rooms that are unused would have to temporarily relinquish them. Not only would we share the wealth, but also share our homes with the less fortunate. It will be hard times for a few years, but compassion and sacrifice is what made our nation great.

Awww...my heart bleeds!

Between the adulation for Barack Obama (if you think the election was bad, wait until Inauguration Day - get your barf bags ready!), the "Chicken Little" reporting on the economy, and absolute hatred for anything that isn't liberal, the MSM deserves to lose its audience and ad revenue!

THE CENTRIST BALONEY

Here we go again...the MSM that sat on its hands for a year and fawned over Obama is now teling us "he will govern from the middle". Once again you (the dufus voter) are being told that a cat is a dog.
There is no evidence that a radical steeped in radicalism and choosing radical alliances for decades is now anywhere near "the center". Its just a lie or wishful thinking.
Is this being said due to media guilt? Media fear? Media concern for their last ounce of credibility left?

Its already been said that the MSM has "too much invested in Obama" to allow failure. They completely sold out their "profession". They will continue to "change his diapers" month after month. Its their big challenge the next few years. Now the media face a guy with warmth towards marxism, with warmth toward being a patsy in foreign relations, with warmth towards the govt buying into all it can, with warmth towards apologizing for being America, with warmth towards full amnesty-social benefits for illegals, with warmth towards bailing out many business instead of letting the free market work and warmth towards radical secularism (aka abortion, homo marriage for starters). His only hostility is toward anyone daring to challenge him. Then he really gets arrogant. So he then surrounds himself with the same old radical secular socialists while espousing "change". What does that tell you?

All those kool-aid drinkers of 2008 should be asked this June, "how do you like him now?" All those calling radio stations all fall to declare some sort of political god...call back this June. We await the economic statistics. We await your 401K balance sheet. We await the jobless figures. We await the Dow figure. We await your paycheck ding.

No excuses like "it was such a big mess its gonna take more years" ...the socialists have total control so (as in Jimmah Carter times) so we can expect more of the past two years since the ($$$$$$) democrats took congress. They already want to give GM about $15 billion. This is the GM that pays the line worker a $78 an hour package (thanks unions). The media will be sooo busy blame shifting 24-7.
Democrats are soon responsible. Over 57 million of us will accept no excuses.
