Here's the description by Dawson Bell of the Detroit Free Press of what happened during a service at Mt. Hope Church in Lansing, Michigan on Sunday:
Pro-gay protest disrupts Lansing-area church's services
A well-known Lansing-area evangelical church was the target of a raucous demonstration by gay anarchists during Sunday services.
The disruption came from a group that calls itself Bash Back, and involved demonstrations outside the church and inside the sanctuary while services were under way, said Mt. Hope Church communications director David Williams.
Members of the group inside the church shouted pro-gay slogans, threw leaflets, unfurled a banner and pulled a fire alarm, then hastily departed, Williams said. There were no injuries, he said.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓Williams said the episode was over in minutes. Eaton County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived quickly, Williams said, but no arrests were made.
One would think that there was no violence, or any attempt at it. To say the least, eyewitness accounts beg to differ, including this one from RightMichigan, which reads, in part:
On Sunday, November 9, 2008 Michigan liberals sat peacefully through announcements, worship and prayer for the sick, our nation and our President-elect before staging a coordinated, disgusting and repulsive attack on worshipers and the broader concept of the church itself at Lansing's Mount Hope Church.
The lefties were a part of a liberal organization known as Bash Back Lansing and their collection of radical blogs, .... (which) called on "queers and trannies" from across the state and the region to converge on Lansing for what they refer to as an "action." ..... their broader goal is stated plainly on one of their lefty blogs.
"I can tell you that we are targeting a well-known anti-queer, anti-choice radical right wing establishment."
..... Wearing secret-service style ear pieces and microphones they received the "go" from their ringleader and off they went.
Prayer had just finished when men and women stood up in pockets across the congregation, on the main floor and in the balcony. "Jesus was gay," they shouted among other profanities and blasphemies as they rushed the stage. Some forced their way through rows of women and kids to try to hang a profane banner from the balcony while others began tossing fliers into the air. Two women made their way to the pulpit and began to kiss.
Their other props? I'll let them tell you in their own words... from another of their liberal blogs:
"(A) video camera, a megaphone, noise makers, condoms, glitter by the bucket load, confetti, pink fabric...yeh."
The "open minded" and "tolerant" liberals ran down the aisles and across the pews, hoping against hope to catch a "right winger" on tape daring to push back (none did). And just in case their camera missed the target, they had a reporter in tow. According to a source inside the church yesterday there was a "journalist" from the Lansing City Pulse along for the ride .....
Read the whole, painful thing.
The Lansing City Pulse's Nathan Harris was apparently the paper's representative, providing background, a weak excuse, and pluralizing an illegal act that the Free Press's Bell said only happened once (bolds are mine):
The “action” began early Sunday morning at the Northstar Center on Lathrop Street in Lansing where a group of around 20 protesters gathered. Pink bandanas, signs, a rainbow-colored “Bash Back!” flag and a pink, wooden cross were distributed among about half the group — the “outside team.” The rest — “inside team” — were dressed in conservative clothes and carried Bibles and stacks of fliers, intending to blend in to the church‘s 11:30 a.m. “contemporary-laid back service.”
City Pulse was alerted to the Bash Back event through a press release and had no prior knowledge of where the “action” would take place or what it would entail.
.... The Rev. John Elieff, “Helps Minister” at Mt. Hope Church, said Bash Back members disrupted the service by bursting into the sanctuary, throwing fliers, hanging a banner from the balcony and pulling fire alarms.
“It was an unwelcome and violent demonstration,” he said.
The headline at the Lansing State Journal's coverage called the perpetrators "gay rights protestors."
Belaboring what is by now terribly predictable: A Google News search at 11 AM ET on ["mount hope" church michigan] for November 8-12 returned 14 results, none of which were Old Media sources outside of Michigan. The New York Times (search is on "Mount Hope," in quotes), as expected, has nothing relevant.
News consumers who follow blogs know more about this incident than traditional media consumers; even lefty blogs are noting what happened, if only to beg outfits like Bash Back to cool it.
If alternative newspapers are going to assist violent protesters, if local papers aren't going to tell readers what actually happened, and if national newspapers are going to act as if nothing happened, who needs any of them?

I'd be 'pushing back'
November 12, 2008 - 11:33 ET by SickofLibsI'd be 'pushing back' against the Eaton County Sheriff's Dept. as to why no arrests were made.
I'm no lawman, but off the top of my head I can think of a number of violations here, the least of which would be yanking a fire alarm.
I guess they think it was just a "prank".
They should also charge
November 12, 2008 - 11:39 ET by KevroyThey should also charge them with costs to clean up the church. Glitter and confetti isnt easy to clean up. Assault charges for traumitizing children and church goers.
Somebody needs to converge on these idiots 'offices' and give them a dose of the same.
Offices? More like
November 12, 2008 - 12:23 ET by SickofLibsOffices? More like basements.
As someone who has had a recent spate of totally bogus traffic tickets in my state costing me upwards of a $1000, I registered my displeasure with Sheriff M. Raines' version of politically correct law enforcement at his website.
But media attention is what they WANT
November 12, 2008 - 12:32 ET by RoverI agree to charge them with whatever crimes were committed, and allow the church to take them to civil court for damages.
But media attention is exactly what they're looking for. Do we really want to give it to them? That would only encourage them, and others like them, to do more of the same, and to turn it up a notch. Eventually somebody's going to get hurt, probably one of them, and I can only imagine the manufactured outrage from the leftists then. They'll make some idiot leftist loon in a hospital bed with a dislocated shoulder into a martyr.
When a kid throws a tantrum, you don't give him what he wants as a reward.

You've got the right idea
November 12, 2008 - 12:37 ET by moderncommentaries83I think we should give them *exactly* what they want. Namely, this is a group of gay anarchists. So abolish the government and the government protections (read: hate crimes legislation) that protect the homosexual minority in this nation.
See what happens to them then, when they can't hide behind the walls of hate crimes legislation.
I'm not advocating violence, but I think it's digustingly ironic these people want to overthrow the very government that made it possible for them to do these despicable acts and get away with it.
Oh, wouldn't the irony be rich if we gave them what they were really after?

Horrible
November 12, 2008 - 11:50 ET by cvgbuckeyeI agree that this is horrible and those responsible should be exposed to the legal system; they should pay a price.
Having said that; we Christians are used to this; we have read about it in the Bible; we have been thrown into the "Fiery Furnace"; the "Lion's Den"; hung upside down. In some countries TODAY, being found with a Bible in your possession or converting to Christianity can be met with the death penalty.
When Sarah Palin, an Evangelical, is not ashamed to be a Christian and says so, Chris Matthews, another Christian, goes on the public airways and says that this kind of Christian talk is dangerous and has no place in political discourse, AND a whole bunch of Christians will agree with him. There are explainable reasons why Matthews takes this position and he needs strong correction that he has apparantly never received in the Catholic church.
What else is new?
Because they know they are safe from Christians
November 12, 2008 - 11:52 ET by c5thenThe congregation would probably pray for them rather then press any charges against them.
They did show how mature and tolerant they are of other peoples beliefs and life-style choices. While Christains tell them that thier behavior is wrong and they need to think about their choices, they get angry and disrupt meetings, get voilent and pull fire alarms. They are out of control children who do not like the adults telling them to behave.
Since they have set the bar so low here, would it be OK for anti-gay groups to do likewise at one of their gathering places?
These groups like Bash Back and others would be better described as cultural terrorists. Think like them or they will attack you.
Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

Why were no arrests made?
November 12, 2008 - 11:53 ET by Hunter12Why were no arrests made? The obvious answer is that the deputies who responded had closet sympathies for the protesters. If these people ran through a crowded church service and threw pamphlets and confetti, all you have to do is find one person in the congregation with confetti in an eye and you've got an assault. A lot of churches videotape the services for shut-ins and parishioners in nursing homes and such. It would be interesting to find out if a video exists. Think about the irony, a group of people demostrating in search of more personal freedom, trampling on the rights of others.
"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last." - Sir Winston Churchill
Why no arrest?
November 12, 2008 - 12:00 ET by moderncommentaries83Simple, really. They're Christians, so they deserve it. Indeed, Canada's Human Rights Commissions have basically said Christians can never be offended and can never be the victims of hate crimes (http://ezralevant.co...). So we deserve whatever harrassment comes our way; it's our fault for not being politically correct. The law will not protect us because politicans have decided we aren't worthy of protection.
A group of raging liberal feminists did the same thing to a Catholic Church in Canada (and worse - they threw soiled tampons and sanitary napkins in the sanctuary) and got away with a slap on the wrist. And it will get worse.
Now that the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has vowed to fight Obama's abhorrent abortion policies (including FOCA), Catholics will be the next target. If Obama has a two-term presidency, I would not be surprised if the First Amendment protection on free expression of religion is scaled back significantly or repealed outright.
You *know* his "National Civilian Security Force" is going to not be concerned with the anti-American, anti-life, anti-Semitic ramblings of the mosque down the road (because that might offend someone and isn't "multicultural" enough), but they will be paying close attention to the church down the block.
Time to lock and load, Christians. Time to lock and load. And, for you Catholics, it's time to show the world the meaning of the phrase "Church Militant"...we have to stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in Christ because we're all in the sights of the anti-religious government people in this nation stupidly elected.
They did. Per this World Net Daily article (http://wnd.com/index...):
That's right. Those people, those Christians, that are supposedly so hateful, so bigoted, so violent and mean didn't lay a hand on the protesters (and they would have been justified removing them by non-lethal force). They prayed for them.
Meanwhile, the protesters are out there, probably preparing to do the same thing to another church, or worse.
Compare and contrast, people. Who is really more tolerant, peaceful, and compassionate?
You're right.

November 12, 2008 - 12:15 ET by attorneygirlBeware.
This kind of hate is the exact same thing that happened to the Jews in Germany.
History shows us that persecution precedes policy.
Our country is in trouble if we continue to allow churches (of any and all kinds) to be persecuted in this way.
Look only to Germany and to the Holocost.
And we have just voted into power a Marxist, and are facing a bad economy, terrorists who want to destroy us,a liberal congress, and an ignorant, lazy populace. This is a recipe for the growth of a dictatorship.
You're exactly right
November 12, 2008 - 12:31 ET by moderncommentaries83That's historically accurate and astute. But since our schools teach a revisionist version of history (where religious people are always the bad guys, and where Bush = Hitler), who but those of us paying attention will make the connection?

A true Fascist, the true face of Fascism, started in the French Revolution. Fascist is an Italian word. Mussolini coined the word himself. His group was called the "Fascisti".
The exception I have with Wolf's list is the main point of the face of Fascism, the Fascisim (with a capital F) that Mussolini developed, included the exclusion of religion. Mussolini hated the Roman Catholic church! And harrassed them at any and every opportunity.
Of course, Hitler was an athiest. He loathed Christians. Yes. you can see the beginnings of practiced fascism in this country. Obami has precedents for it here, but, that's for another day.

November 13, 2008 - 02:24 ET by Conservative VoiceIt is amazing what they get away with. On the one hand they claim its a life style choice, but on the other they don't want to hold any responsibility for that choice, so claim its biology. Of course this argument fails, because alcoholics learn to be sober...and since the gay community doesn't like to be thought of as sick or have defective genes like unto an alcoholic, they claim its a life style choice.
Nor does the gay gene answer the question as to why people are Bi-sexual. ( and in fact those rare cases where homosexual acts happen in nature, when given the opposite sex, they take the opportunity to do so...I don't know of any case where a certain animal is exclusively homosexual...could we determine this? How do we ask an animal do they prefer same sex sex? )
To say gay people get turned on by the same sex, well that doesn't say much, because the hand is neither male or female, yet does the job.
Marriage is more than sex. And its more than hospital rights. Its about the family. If a gay couple want to live together, that does not bother me...it becomes my business when they demand that I sanction the act.
