This is one of those "I hope against hope that I'm wrong, but I doubt it" stories.
According to a Denver TV Station (HT Michelle Malkin), many of those who are expecting tickets for Barack Obama's Invesco Field speech on the final night of the Democratic Convention in the Mile High City are being told they have to do volunteer work for the campaign -- this week -- to qualify.
Will this story get any traction outside of Denver in traditional media outlets? As I said, "I hope against hope that I'm wrong, but I doubt it."
Read the whole thing, but here are the details:
The Obama campaign has begun notifying people who got tickets for the big acceptance speech at Invesco Field the final night of the convention.
Many of those who received tickets told 7NEWS they have come with a caveat.
Those viewers said the campaign told them they must volunteer six hours for the campaign by Friday in order to get a ticket.
"I got a call that if I want the tickets I have to volunteer two shifts of three hours apiece -- for one ticket. If I want two tickets, then it's four shifts of two hours apiece," said Berenice Christensen.
..... Dozens of Obama supporters are already volunteering. They are volunteers who believe working for tickets to the biggest night of the convention is a small price to pay.
"They're trying desperately. I mean, they're almost panic-stricken, they want tickets to hear his acceptance speech," said volunteer Terry Andrews.
..... Christensen said she too is excited, but a part of her believes the process for signing up was disingenuous. "I mean they made it seem like any Coloradan could go, and now you have to work for your ticket."
A Breckenridge resident e-mail 7NEWS with a similar experience:
"My experience matches what you are hearing from other sources. Because of my work schedule and other activities going on, I did not sign up for the All Star tickets. But I was called by the campaign and told that I had to volunteer this week in order to get tickets at all. I finally agreed to one three-hour shift, but it left a bad impression for this lifelong Democrat ....."
..... The Obama campaign insists that volunteering is not a requirement to get a ticket.
The article goes on to note that the Obama campaign is now claiming that you have to volunteer to get better "all-star seating." But if you don't volunteer, it appears that "you retain your place in line for what is called a 'community credential.'"
Someone in the media ought to be on the lookout for overbooking, which I would think is a legitimate danger, given the mechanics of how things are being handled. Or maybe overbooking is a deliberate plan to make it appear as if the teeming masses can't get enough of this guy.
Can you imagine the traditional media outcry if the GOP convention and its stereotypical mean, exploitative capitalists started demanding "slave labor" as a condition for entry -- and either incompletely disclosed the requirement, or only disclosed it after the fact?
Another personal reax: Maybe this guy really does think he's "The One."

So I guess there will be no ticket poaching outside?
August 13, 2008 - 12:10 ET by SickofLibsI can't wait to hear about the vast tracking infrastructure thats going to be required to validate and track the required 450,000 komrade-hours in the work camps. (75,000 komrades x 6 hours)

August 13, 2008 - 12:20 ET by Tom BlumerCould this be an indication that the planning and budgetary problems noted by the New York Times in July (reprinted here at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune) are so acute that the DNC and the campaign need thousands of free hours to get things ready on time and sort of on budget?

August 14, 2008 - 07:22 ET by sarcasmoBut they sold the thing out -- all 75K seats -- in less than 24 hours. That means their campaign can get away with stuff like this due to simple supply and demand, which has nothing to do with media bias. Hey, Obama's either a celebrity or else he's not, ya can't have it both ways...

August 13, 2008 - 12:30 ET by jay_1975Here ic Colorado the media has reported that the DNC is around 11 million dollars short of thier goal. The Obama camp bought 30,000 of the tickets to the speech and are indeed giving the tickets away for volunteer work. I recieved my first campaign call of the cycle last night from a speech hopeful. When I told her that I don't support Socialists, she had no response. Recruiting the best for O'Carter I see.

August 13, 2008 - 12:30 ET by ScrapironI put in 4 hours of volunteer work (water rescue/recovery training) last night and it'll take another 4 hours today to clean and put the equipment back in service. Do I qualify for one of them thar tickets?

Aside from the bad
August 13, 2008 - 12:36 ET by Dan The Man 2Aside from the bad publicity I think it is an excellent way to make sure the people "invited" are Obamabots. I mean you have to prove yourself to get into the main show. I wonder if all of the faithful, like teh press, are required to work. I guess this is what we can expect of "community" service when Obama gets into office.
Come to think of it perhaps we could extend this into welfare, you know "volunteer" to give back to teh community taht is helping you out.
Ask not what your country can do to you .. wait thats not it. Yes it is with Obama in charge.

Here's Another Volunteer Opportunity
August 13, 2008 - 12:42 ET by Gothampc"The Obama campaign insists that volunteering is not a requirement to get a ticket. They said those who were told they must volunteer must have clicked on the opt-in button for "all-star seating" when they signed up for the tickets. If you click that button, then you are required to volunteer, but you get a better seat."
Because Democrats are too stupid to know what button to push (or what hole to punch; see Florida 2000), I am asking for volunteers to help me with the upcoming election. Basically I need volunteers to lead a Democrat into the voting booth and point to the button that the Democrat needs to push to cast a POTUS vote. Even though this is volunteer work, it will pay dividends for several years to come. Do I have any volunteers?

If this zilch gets in we will all have to "volunteer". You want power for your home, gas for your car? You must volunteer!

August 13, 2008 - 16:40 ET by ThisnThatCan I bank the credits, and transfer them to something else? Suppose I volunteer 24 hours, but only need 1 ticket. Can I bank the extra 20 Obama-credits and use them for, say, carbon-credits if I get in a jam -- like mowing the lawn, or barbequeing? Or how about a "get out of jail free" card -- how many of these can I get for 20 extra Obama-credits? How many extra votes do I get on election day for 20 extra Obama-credits? How many tire pressure gauges can I exchange these credits for? I'm thinking about the future here, folks.
