Media Mostly MIA on Obama's 'America No Longer What It Once Was' Downer Delivered to 7 Year-Old

This doesn't qualify as any kind of surprise, but it should be noted nonetheless.

Thursday, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama gave a stunningly downbeat assessment of the nation's overall situation in a response to a seven year-old girl who asked him why he is running for president. Obama's media water-carriers have virtually ignored his very telling response, one that is reminiscent of Jimmy Carter's gloomiest, malaise-based assessments of America during his awful presidency.

Here is a rundown of what happened from Ed Morrissey of Hot Air (direct YouTube link to relevant video is here):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

When presidential candidates answer questions from children about why they want the job, most will give an answer that uplifts the child and the candidate. Not Barack Obama. At a campaign stop in Elkhart, Indiana, a seven-year-old girl asked the Democrat why he wants to be President — and he told her that America has gone downhill:

"America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children."

An August 7-9 Google News search I did at 10 a.m. on [Obama "it once was"] (typed exactly as indicated within brackets) returned 30 results "with all duplicates included" (when I did the search, the results header indicated that there were "about 85," but there were in fact only 30). Of those, 26 relate directly to Obama's statement.

Of those 26 results, only four could arguably be construed as coming from major media original reporting:

  • One is an ABC Political Punch blog item from Jake Tapper that linked over to the YouTube after a brief description.
  • The second is a Fox News transcript from its Thursday evening "Hannity and Colmes" (H&C) program, where Mike Huckabee commented on what Obama said ("We saw a candidate who's off the prompter. ..... This was a very, very serious tactical error, because it's that kind of comment that does come back to haunt a candidate.").
  • The third is at August 8's US News's Political Bulletin, where its final item of six refers to the H&C program.
  • The fourth, at Real Clear Politics, also references H&C.

Of the remainder:

  • Seven are from a group of California-based publications. An identical post by "Rational_Thinker" entitled "Barrack Obama Whiffs a pitch from a 7 year old girl" appears at each one.
  • Seven are from center-right blogs and online publications: The Hot Air entry above, Powerline, Townhall's Hugh Hewitt, two at WorldNetDaily (here and here), Wizbang, Stop the ACLU.
  • Six are from Rush Limbaugh's site (one of them is here; it will go behind Rush's subscription wall on Thursday evening).
  • One is at a center-left blog, the The Carpetbagger Report, where proprietor Steve Benen describes the situation as a "manufactured controversy."

That's a total of 25. The one remaining item is from an Old Media source, but not from original reporting. It is an Atlanta Journal-Constitution "Thinking Right" blog post by Jim Wooten, who effectively tells Benen why he's wrong:

Obama simply cannot stay on the “I love America” script, a threshold requirement. With him, it’s conditions and qualifiers, lawyered-up codicils to define precisely the America he embraces, lest his adoring acolytes on the Left think he includes all that Big Oil, God, guns and bigotry stuff, too. Middle America hears him and it jars. We don’t know what America he’s talking about, whether we and our values are in or out.

None of the above would include sites that are "only" blogs, meaning that they have not cleared Google News's definition of a news source or have not applied to be considered as a Google News source. The NewsBusters version of this post will most likely appear in Google News shortly after it goes up.

UPDATE, Aug. 10: The NewsBusters post is there is you change the scope of the [Obama "it once was"] search to August 7-10 from August 7-9, even though this post clearly went up on August 9. I can't explain that.

++++++++++++++++++

My take: At least Jimmy Carter was "smart" enough to fool the voters with his toothy grin and pleasant countenance during most of the long 1976 campaign season. Obama, and for that matter his wife Michelle ("for the first time in my adult life, I'm proud to be an American"), have clearly not done so. They have turned "America has problems, and we can fix them," which is of course a common theme and perfectly defensible, into "America as a nation has declined," which is much harder to defend, and certainly harder for a fundamentally optimistic nation to swallow, especially when that message is delivered to a 7 year-old girl.

This explains why Old Media is giving Obama's statement the near-silent treatment.

The guy has two kids of his

The guy has two kids of his own! Doesn't he know how to talk to a child? He is soooo wrapped up in his own bloated ego that even answering a child he has to tout himself as the solution to all America's "problems."

This just reminded me: earlier today I came upon this video of Michelle talking about another thing that's wrong with this country, she is tired of being afraid, and of everybody being afraid (starts at 2:00) and Barack is going tomake us not be afraid any more.

BTW....is this a woman who is just "too beautiful"?

"America is …, uh, is no

"America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children."

Oh what one could do with those two lines in a campaign ad/commercial running against 'The One'.

...Priceless.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Yet another reason NOT to vote for Obamessiah!

He doesn't want it for his kids, huh? Then I don't want THIS for any kid in America!

His administration would be a throwback to the Clinton years ten times over!

Osama Bama has no clue what a real family is - but he'll defend the looney left that belong to the LGBT agenda to have their "families"!

Sickening!

Hope and change my big ol' butt!

It is so obvious that this Obama clown wants the fundamentally try to change the USA.  Our country was not built on his principles.  It was not built on "we are the world" non-sense.  It was built on patriotic, capitalistic, self-reliant ideals.  With each word out of his mouth, the more I wonder what has happened to people who could support such rubbish.

"It is so obvious that this Obama clown wants the fundamentally try to change the USA."

America should be very worried about this man. He has absolutely NO business running a nation that does not meet his standards. Maybe he should take a stab at running Cuba, he's better suited for it, and they would absolutely love him!

Clear, Obama and Hugo

should have a great time setting out the future that they see fit for the US.  When that happens, it's time to take to the streets!

Lack of MSM coverage is now a "marker" on a Story

From the never mentioned Congressional Oil revolt going on in DC, to the lack of coverage of the Great and Wonderful Oz-ama's Gaffs, to John Edward's philandering,  the MSM is Identifying news by it's Omission from their Coverage.

Bias is predictable, and the MSM coverage or Cover up is now being anticipated.  It's pretty Obvious stuff.  No Surprises here.

Americans are on to them......they can't hide their Bias any more.

The Republican Revolution will not be Televised

You're only partly right.

You're only partly right. That America is not what it once was "pre-Bush-selected-not elected," is engrained in the MSM belief system, and therefore is not newsworthy. Dog bites man.

MSM - shaping all the perceptions you need to believe, then confirming it with a poll.

Isn't that special!

"And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children."

Ohh, he's running for the sake of his children! Isn't that special!

Meanwhile, he's completely MUM about the fate of ‘Closing Time’ Edwards illegitimate child.

Rush Limbaugh hit it on the

Rush Limbaugh hit it on the head:

It’s a 7 year old Senator. Ya tell her because you love the country.
You tell her because this is the greatest place on Earth. That we’ve
got challenges, but you want to help the country through it. You don’t
tell a 7 year old that her country isn’t what it once was. You do not
lie to 7 year olds and tell them that your country sucks. You just
don’t do it Senator.

One wonders if he and Michelle regale their daughters with tales of how this country sucks but Daddy is going to fix it.

Global Warming Causing Downfall of U.S. Beach Volleyball

Maybe The O is on to something here -- Latvia just defeated the U.S. in beach volleyball.  I don't even think they have a beach in Latvia!

Or at least it is frozen 90% of the year.  Perhaps this is a consequence of global warming!

I also think that global warming had an effect.....as well as a good case of sucking!

Monica Crowley did a segment on this episode on her WABC NYC radio show today.

For Dr_Liberty; Better than Rio??

Hmmm...

Just can't wrap my head around Latvian babes in bikinis.

Latvian beaches

Neither can I. Plus, I don't think Rio's beaches ever freeze.

Media is MIA when

it comes to all of SOBama's clap trap.

I liked the way they completely ignored the "changing of our economic system" comments.

HELLO, any body home?

Can it be the entire MSM is socialist leaning or believing?

Can they be so STUPID?

I understand the teenagers who faint for him but when I watch the "I get tingles up my leg" old timers, it is difficult for me to understand why they would prop up and push for this guy?

Do they really want our country to be Putinized???

I JUST DON'T GET IT???

Can it be the entire MSM

Can it be the entire MSM is socialist leaning or believing?

Can they be so STUPID?

They can, and they are.

They truly believe that the only reason the socialist system fails is that the "wrong" people are in charge.

They really believe that when the "right" people are in charge here (Obama and the Democrats) there will be complete "economic justice," health care will be free to everyone and no one will have to wait, gas prices will fall, cars will all get 50 mpg (because they mandated it) everyone will "conserve" enough to get us out of this mess forever, and we will live in Utopia.

They have a child's "magical thinking."

Not to mention

The quality of each service diminishes proportionally with the increase of government oversight.

Do we graduate the same calibre of Med Doctors if the government runs healthcare?  I doubt it.

Well said. I have said that just because someone wears a tie, does not automatically make them smart. I am becoming more and more convinced that news is nothing more than an opinion from people with an agenda . . . and they don't necessarily have to be smart people. See Keith Olbermann.

Utopiobama

"The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism." Karl Marx

I think his statement about returning kindness to America is very revealing. I cringed when Bush the Elder said "a kinder, gentler America" years ago.

Just what does Obama think about the people of the United States? Has he ever really traveled amongst the people or mingled with people outside of his social activism circles? I find the vast majority of Americans to be kind, and I have been to nearly every state. Yes. I have discovered some cranks out there (A lady in rural Kentucky tried to kill me with a scatter gun a few years ago), but I've enjoyed assistance from and fellowship with all types of people from all parts of this great nation.

My daughter, who is nine years old, watched part of the Opening Cermonies of the Olympics. After she watched most of the teams march through the stadium she said, "so many people look like Americans."

I told her, "That's right because we are made up of the people of the world. The only thing a person needs to be an American is to believe in freedom. They don't have to look a certain way."

We know a young man from Zimbabwe who goes to our church. He comes to our house for supper from time-to-time (always interesting conversation). I explained to my daughter that he is as American as we are because he's a citizen and believes in freedom (and has more confidence in the greatness of this country than Barak Obama).

When my family and I travel we camp (except in the South in the summer -- because I grew up there without air conditioning). We were in South Dakota a few years ago and spent an evening with some natives. They laughed at how we talked. We poked fun at how they talked. By the end of the evening we embraced each other as Americans.

In my travels I've discovered that Arkansas is close to Kentucky, but Illinois is a heckuva lot closer.

Perfect summation on Obama

Obama simply cannot stay on the “I love America” script, a threshold
requirement. With him, it’s conditions and qualifiers, lawyered-up
codicils to define precisely the America he embraces, lest his adoring
acolytes on the Left think he includes all that Big Oil, God, guns and
bigotry stuff, too.
Middle America hears him and it jars. We don’t know
what America he’s talking about, whether we and our values are in or
out.

I didn't check most of your

I didn't check most of your links, Tom, but I did check out the Tapper one. What a lop-sided comparison with the videos. He has a montage of McCain "looking dazed and confused"... saying dumb things....about a dozen, balanced by a video of Obama containing just this one comment.

How about one of you guys working up a montage of Obama and his wife with all the negative things they have said about America?

Perhaps Obama is right

If a formerly great nation would actually seriously consider this Marxist-nanny-wanna-be as its leader, perhaps he's right in that our better days are behind us.

I'd like to think that was not true.

I guess BHO longs for the

I guess BHO longs for the Carter years with high unemployment, high interest rates, high gas prices, and big government sollutions. You know, back when America was great.

I recently heard the liberal media complain that the unemployment rate is at the highest level in FOUR YEARS!!!! Nevermind that it is still remarkably low in comparison to previous presidencies for many decades. But that part was left out of the report for some reason.

Almost Shatner-esque in his

Almost Shatner-esque in his delivery.
