At long last, has the Associated Press lost all sense of decency?
The AP's story (saved here for future reference in case the wire service is embarrassed into revising it; you might consider saving it too as Exhibit A on how far over the cliff the dinosaur media has driven itself) by Douglass K. Daniel, with Jennifer Loven contributing (I might have known), gets in at least three cheap, fundamentally untrue, and totally uncalled-for shots at Tony Snow, who died earlier this morning.
I won't sully NB's front page with any of them. They follow the jump:
With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster's good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts — he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses.
..... During daily briefings, he challenged reporters, scolded them and questioned their motives as if he were starring in a TV show broadcast live from the West Wing.
Critics suggested that Snow was turning the traditionally informational daily briefing into a personality-driven media event short on facts and long on confrontation. He was the first press secretary, by his own accounting, to travel the country raising money for Republican candidates.
Godspeed Tony. I'm sure God will take an objective view of your life, and you'll waltz right in to be with Him for eternity.
Otherwise, words fail. How dare they?
I'll let commenters supply them.
The White House's statement is here at the Corner.

July 12, 2008 - 12:08 ET by garyganuI was astounded at the callousness in which the AP article eulogized Tony Snow today. There is was, on my home page, when I clicked on the Internet and the Yahoo home page came up.
I am usually critical of Yahoo news for not having real news, but celebrity news, scandals, fashion, and articles of interest for today's demoralized popular culture instead. Now I am wishing that they would return to their popular puff pieces, rather than tearing down the best presidential press secretary of all time on the day following his death. They reprinted this eulogy, turned smear piece from AP, which has become a propaganda machine for the far left, just like MSNBC and Newsweek magazine,
The article started off as as any death announcement would. It listed his accomplishments and career. They quoted President Bush's warm remarks, remembering his past secretary, who stepped down from his post about a year ago. Oddly, the article did not mention the family Snow left behind. However, the article suddenly took a sharp turn to the left and bashed Snow as uninformed and confrontational. Snow was anything but those inaccurate charges. He was one of the most informed and friendly journalists that I had ever heard. However, he would not allow unfounded attacks and smears to go unchallenged.
Quote from the AP article: "With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster's good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts — he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses."
"Critics suggested that Snow was turning the traditionally informational daily briefing into a personality-driven media event short on facts and long on confrontation."
"Although a star in conservative politics, as a commentator he had not always been on the president's side. He once called Bush "something of an embarrassment" in conservative circles and criticized what he called Bush's "lackluster" domestic policy."
I first became aware of Tony Snow about 15 years ago, when he was an occasional guest-host, filling in for a vacationing Rush Limbaugh. Although I tuned in to hear Rush, I was not disappointed when I heard Snow instead, I continued listening and I began to look forward to Snow's guest host appearances. In later years, I looked forward to seeing Snow on Fox news as a guest and a host on the Fox news channel.
When President Bush appointed Snow as his press secretary, I was thrilled that the white house finally had a surrogate that would not be afraid of holding the extremely liberally biased white house press core at bay. Tony Snow did not let me down. When the press core laid into Bush's policies with loaded and hateful questions, Snow always, politely, humorously and informatively, put them in their place. Snow exposed the liberal bias in the press and at the same time he clearly and accurately explained the president's policies.
In stark contrast, Several weeks ago when journalist Tim Russert passed away, the entire media, press and TV, held a week long eulogy and praise fest, as if Russert life was the second coming of Christ. Russert was also a dedicated journalist who was also a stickler for the facts and also extremely well informed. Like Snow. Russert had a passion for his work and devoted himself to it. The only difference was that Russet leaned toward the left and Snow leaned toward the right.
I am outraged that the AP has taken this solemn occasion of a great newsman's death to perpetuate their dishonest criticism of anything or anyone conservative.

Tom
July 12, 2008 - 12:23 ET by Rush FanYou echo my sentiments exactly. As I began to read the AP story you refer to (before coming here to NewsBusters), my anger and astonishment at the tone of the story began to build. I am not familiar with Douglass Daniel’s work, but when I reached the end of this piece of trash and saw that Jennifer Loven had contributed to this story I understood why the tone of the story was such a disparagement of Tony Snow. What was even more disconcerting was that when reading the FoxNews.com story about Tony Snow I noticed a familiar ring to it and Lo and Behold at the bottom of the page it read: The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Over the years many have noted Loven’s assiduous bias. Back in March, 2006 Power Line blog’s headline was titled: A New Low for Loven and began: “As we've noted before, AP reporter Jennifer Loven has written some astonishingly biased "news" articles attacking President Bush”. You pointed out in January 2006 in your NewsBusters and BizzyBlog piece titled: AP's Jennifer Loven Spins Bush Speech as an "Attack" Only on Democrats: “She also has an obvious conflict of interest, as her husband, Roger Ballentine, was a senior adviser to John Kerry on energy and environmental issues during the 2004 presidential campaign.” In posting late last night to your story Newspaper Stocks Continue Unprecedented Dive I noted that my local newspapers “ source of most of the national news is from the liberal Associated Press.”
Enough about the AP. Let me close by sending my condolences to the Snow family. Tony, I will miss you dearly!

Which political party is invested in our defeat in Iraq?
Compare that coverage to their coverage of Tim Russert
July 12, 2008 - 12:51 ET by Amy RidenourCompare that coverage to their coverage of Tim Russert's passing, yet the similarities between the two (aside from their political persuasions) are great. Both nice guys, beloved by many, cut down too young in their prime. Treating one differently than the other is a very clear case of media bias, I think.
Furthermore, the story is unfortunate in that Tony Snow's command of the facts was exceptional, and as such the implication otherwise was needlessly unfair. "Exceptional" is too weak a word, really, as Tony Snow had a very deep knowledge of policy issues. Much of the press corps does not care about policy, though, only about playing "gotcha," so to be fair to the press corps, many of its members may not even have noticed how deep and varied his knowledge truly was.
RIP, Tony Snow. The USA is a better place for his having been here. He'll be missed.

Plus I already received a reply form the WH on behalf of President Bush thanking for the correspondence regarding this matter, letting me know that unfortunately with the volume if emails they cannot respond to all...blah blah blah...
I really hope they do pay attention to this matter.

July 12, 2008 - 18:32 ET by Chris NormanThanks for the link. I wrote and expressed my disgust at their shamefully biased report and pointed out this was the kind of outrageous bias that has destroyed their credibility as a news source and the public trust in them. However, I did not send a cc with the demand that they be banned from briefings. This just isn't going to fly in the flawed real world - consider who they let into these things now. I do hope that are given the short shrift from the WH press office for the remainder of the term.

July 12, 2008 - 19:52 ET by Ryan Mc."if not always a command of the facts"? What the hell? Can they support that in any way?
How dare they say that about a man on the day he died even if it were true, which it was not.
I am just amazed that this is the same AP that celebrated the moron press secretary Scotty McClellan, who truely was clueless, but says this about Tony Snow. What bastards.

July 12, 2008 - 21:05 ET by PrairieSkyRush hit the nail on the head, as usual. Leave it to the MSM to once more, rise up from the gutter and repond in such a despicable way to such a sad event. Is anyone really surprised? I'm not. Upon hearing the news this morning, I wondered how long it would take those vipers to say or do something reprehensible.

July 12, 2008 - 21:10 ET by BigSky1970That was an excellent segment too. I can't wait for the video to be posted online. I also expect Rush will devote most of his opening monologue and a great portion of his Monday show in remembering Tony Snow. And rightfully so.

July 13, 2008 - 00:26 ET by Rush FanThanks for the headsup on Rush Limbaugh's appearance on Greta's show. I was able to watch the rerun of her show and listen to Rush tear into those two detestable individuals.
Part of Rush's response to the AP's disgusting "broadcaster's good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts" comment: "Why in the world would AP choose to denigrate Tony Snow this way and I think I have an answer. One of the things that he brought to the White House briefing as a professional was not a sense of broadcaster’s good looks and media, he challenged the premise of many of their questions. This had never been done to the degree that he did it. He did it successfully…”

Tony knew he was the smartest guy in the room.....
July 13, 2008 - 00:12 ET by riff_raff.....and that's why he always had a smile on his face. Even when dealing with pompous, self-important, no-talent hacks like David Gregory and Helen Thomas.
"..... During daily briefings, he challenged reporters, scolded them and questioned their motives....."
Questioned their motives? Of course he did. The MSM clowns, posing as objective journalists, that typically filled the briefing room never asked thoughtful, intelligent questions. What they usually did when called on was launch into some long winded, politically-biased diatribe that they had spent all morning concocting, in hopes of getting a response from Tony Snow that they could somehow twist into a "gotcha". He was smarter than that (and far smarter than them), he didn't play along like previous WH spokes-holes would, and they hated him for it.
He was a class act until the end, and that will be his enduring legacy.
Snow's "bosses": an offensive word choice
July 13, 2008 - 00:36 ET by Alfred J. Lemire"With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster's good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts — he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses." the AP's Douglass K. Daniel wrote.
Rush Limbaugh and others have properly swiped at Douglass K. Daniel' claim of what Tony Snow brought to the briefing room and Daniel's assertion that Mr. Snow did "not always [have] a command of the facts."
Writing for The Corner on National Review Online, Yuval Levin tells of how Tony Snow called him to discover information on some matter in Mr. Levin's policy area, while Mr. Levin served on the White House staff. Levin had sent a half-page of "talking points" to Snow, who later called, to get more information in about a 20-minute conversation. The subject came up in a press conference; Levin wrote that Snow expressed the White House policy better than he could have, himself. That quiz to get the details was typical of Snow.
"[I]t became clear that he wanted to learn everything he could not only so that he could speak with some depth and authority to the press (the AP couldn’t be more wrong about that), but also because he himself was moved by a love of the little details and the big stories." Levin wrote.
One ought not let another stinker in the Daniel story pass, the end of the quoted paragraph, "to the delight of his White House bosses." Am I alone in taking offense with that? First, the use of "bosses" to describe whoever now reported to. I haven't been able to find the organization chart & whether Snow reported to Ed Gillespie or Joshua Bolten, the Chief of Staff, or someone else. Whatever, "bosses" seems curiously dismissive, hostile, and offensive. Further, Snow's performance was to the delight of lots more than whoever hired him to serve in the White House; thousands of Republicans, unhappy with Scott McClellan serving in a post for which he was unsuited, were cheered by Snow's service.
Daniel easily could have discovered and included something on Snow's musical talents. He played six instruments, according to Fox News, the flute, trombone, piccolo, saxophone, guitar, and accordion. How's that for a range of instruments? I heard him play some flute on Fox News Channel tonight. He was good.
This former newspaper reporter considers much of the current press, and especially the AP, to be extremely corrupt, grossly inept, and recklessly partisan. Daniel's report reaches a new depth, of execrable offensiveness.
AJL and others .....
July 13, 2008 - 01:18 ET by Tom Blumer.... good points. I could have gone on and on.
At my place I noted that the reader learns more about Snow in 200 or so words at the NY Daily News's blog obit than they would in 650 or so words of Daniel's and Loven's tripe.
The "bosses" thing (as if it's some kind of mob); "playing to the cameras" (yeah, right); using the word "conservative" four times (when it just kills them to use the word "liberal" even once).
But the real topper, on further review and reflection, is this: When have you ever seen how much money a person made at any of their later in life adult jobs in an OBITUARY? I'll bet never. Sure you'll sometimes see how a person started in a low-paid $x/hr. job and worked up the ladder, etc., but that's totally different.
The only reason they specified Snow's earnings was to make him seem greedy to many readers. Some "greed"; everyone who knows anything about him knows that any extra money he might have earned would have gone straight to the wife and children he loved so dearly. I also think he might have told us the "private-sector" story to avoid having to tell us that his time was running short so he could avoid the pity party that might ensue.
Daniel and Loven (I suspect the order should be switched) had NO call to do what they did. What I cited in the original post above were the falsehoods. But the salary thing especially was totally classless and boils my blood the more I think about it. I think of what Rush often says: these people claim to be above money and status, but they're obsessed with it.
