Oklahoma Unemployment Is Way Down. Will Media Look into Why?

Oklahoma's unemployment rate, which was a seasonally adjusted 4.3% and 4.4%, respectively, in September and October 2007 (4.1% and 4.2% unadjusted), has fallen to a seasonally adjusted 3.1% in both February and March of this year (3.5% and 3.2% unadjusted).

The unemployment rate in most states has gone up from September 2007 to March 2008. In states where the rate has gone down, none has shown an improvement like that seen in the Sooner State -- not even close.

Why is that?

What has happened in Oklahoma that hasn't happened elsewhere?

Well, one thing Oklahoma did last year was to pass an enforcement-focused immigration reform law.

It did so in May, and it took effect in November. Here is how One News Now described the bill at the time it was signed by the state's governor (original link no longer available):

House Bill 1804 was passed by overwhelming majorities in both the House and Senate of the Oklahoma Legislature. The measure’s sponsor, State Representative Randy Terrill, says the bill has four main topical areas: it deals with identity theft; it terminates public assistance benefits to illegals; it empowers state and local police to enforce federal immigration laws; and it punishes employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens.

Oklahoma is no longer “O.K.” for illegal aliens, Terrill observes. “When you put everything together in context,” he contends, “the bottom line is illegal aliens will not come here if there are no jobs waiting for them, they will not stay here if there is no government subsidy, and they certainly won’t stay here if they know that if they ever encounter our state and local law enforcement officers, they will be physically detained until they’re deported. And that’s exactly what House Bill 1804 does.”

The Oklahoma legislator is pleased the bill he sponsored into law was signed by Governor Henry and believes it will go a long way to curb the illegal immigration problem in the state.

It seems reasonable to ask if the law has accomplished the intended curbing of illegal immigration. This January 9 USA Today article by Emily Bazar ("Strict immigration law rattles Okla. businesses") indicates that it has -- not that Bazar thinks that this is a good thing.

The next question to ask would be whether citizens have taken jobs that illegals used to do. Though the lower unemployment rate doesn't in and of itself prove that, it does point strongly in that direction.

The improving employment situation in the state has received sparse coverage, and the only two relevant stories I found (here and here) did not attempt to explain why it's happening.

Will anyone in Old Media dig more deeply into the Sooner State's situation? Or will they try to pretend that Oklahoma's improvement doesn't exist, because finding out why might expose some inconvenient truths, and hurt the cause of illegal-immigrant "amnesty"?

So maybe it's not always

So maybe it's not always "jobs that Americans won't do"...maybe it's jobs that employers prefer to hire illegals for (at extremely low wages).

I read somewhere that employers actually want illegal immigrants because of that....that if the illegals already here are "amnestied" into citizenship, that employers will still hire the new wave of illegals who follow.

Makes sense, from that point of view.

Tom Blumer - Great Research

Your work is the first I've seen that links immigration enforcement with a drop in unemployment.

Thanks.

Libs Support Below Living Wages

Motherbelt, I think the phrase should be "jobs that Americans won't do for that low wage". I have always found it interesting that the libs who by supporting open borders also support wages being suppressed by the natural market forces that occur when employers can hire workers for below minimum wages. I find it even more interesting that conservatives who by opposing illegal immigration are supporting higher wages for the masses. Man, have times changed - libs support starvation wages and right-wingers support higher wages - why that's just upside down.

Remember, even Caesar Chavez was opposed to illegal immigration because of the effect that it has on prevailing wages.

conservatives vs. liberals

....and, the conservatives who could not care less about saving species, don't believe in global warming are probably doing the most to protect the environment by objecting to the uncontrolled immigration which leads to overpopulation in our country with it's highly polluting lifestyle.  Overpopulation is also straining the water supply and leading to urban sprawl.  We are rapidly losing are farmlands and open spaces.  The liberals and environmentalists are not the ones picking up the piles of filthy trash migrants leave at the border.  The Sierra Club just sent out a card with cute pictures of Florida Panthers - "Only 50 left!"  Of course they are rapidly losing their habitat due to overpopulation, but nothing about that from the open borders club.

Americans doing jobs the illegals won't do....

Geee... Remove the illegally low priced labor source and American unemployment goes down.....  Who would have guessed?  (Libs never did do so good in Economics 101)

Tom: We also have those

Tom:

We also have those here, who are trying their dead level best to get that bill declared unconstitutional. Business owners, of energy companies are trying hard. I would be happy to see you address that in one of your blogs. Perhaps it will give some unwanted attention to it. Also, here in Oklahoma, the higher the oil goes, the more work there is. The drilling yards get going real good and put alot of folks to work. The illegals have left the construction sites, laborers for the most part, and those jobs have been filled by legals.

Just a note for you. The California cities are farming and/or cattle towns. Like to know what they consider metropolitan stat areas. Thanks for the link.

Excellent point, so why are

Excellent point, so why are they wanting to import more people to harvest crops, when those people already there are unemployed?  This is the stupidity of the temporary worker visa, it assumes that by the expiration date of the visa, the worker has gone back to their home country.  Right there is a prime example of why it's false.  A properly run visa program will not allow any more people in unless they account for the person going back.  If they don't go back, they should be subtracting that AWOL worker from the next batch of worker visa requests.

I just found these links

NCLC, Chambers Sue to Stop Oklahoma Immigration Law

Chamber Challenges Constitutionality of Oklahoma Immigration Law

Dismissal of HB 1804 suit nixed

Judge to consider HB 1804 arguments

Recap: The chamber has betrayed most of its members by going to court to have 1804 overturned. The judge involved wouldn't dismiss the suit. The judge heard arguments on April 11:

District Judge Jefferson Sellers did not rule on the matter and did not set a date for a decision.

Attorneys now have the opportunity to submit proposed "findings of fact and conclusions of law."

Those pleadings are due two weeks after a transcript of the court hearing is prepared, and the transcript is expected to be ready in a week.

So it's in the hands of Judge Sellers. I question how much of a defense Oklahoma's AG has put up, given that he and the guv are Dems.

This link would seem to indicate that the judge is a Dem.

I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't look good.

Tom...yeah, there are a few

Tom...yeah, there are a few of em here, (liberals) to. I heard them talking on the radio this morning about the constitutional challenge. Seems that it is illegal for a non citizen to own any property in Oklahoma and a few other things. Looks like illegal immigrants were thought about way back then. Seems like the constitution will only reinforce 1804.
As far as the AG and the judge, I dont know, but the Governer will do anything that is popular with the people. He wants another term. If he comes out aginst 1804, after he signed it, he can kiss it good bye, and he knows it.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Arizona Law

Fed judge upheld Ariz. law making it a crime to hire illegals.

Look at South Dakota having

Look at South Dakota having dropped to 2.5% unemployment, what was this attributed to?  What are their policies concerning immigration enforcement or is it simply too cold for illegals?

they are all over here

Us folks in the Peoples Republic of Minnesota keep it comfortable for layabouts and illegals so our neighbors in the Dakotas don't have to. When all the other states enforced the Federal revised guidelines on welfare (no work, no pay) they enjoyed a final leech count of about 40% of the normal up to then. Minnesota decided to keep on going, so our welfare count is pretty much the same as before. We have a huge Mexican and Somali population here. As far as I can see the Somalis are mostly legal. The Mexicans generally are not. I personally know someone who spent the night at the county lock-up and shared the holding cell with a Mexican who was on his fourth DUI. Great. Doing the drunk driving that Americans won't do, I guess.

legal immigrants?

The Somali immigrants probably came in on the Refugee or Asylee plan as well as illegally.  Read about the author of  the book "Infidel" for more background information.  Somewhere on the internet are articles about Somali wedding customs and their methods of female circumcision or infibulation. They enjoy camel meat, not to be confused with Samoans.

Illegal immigrants

are doing the jobs Americans won't do for peanuts.

Get rid of these Mexicans, and wages will go up and unemployment will go down!  Simple economics.

Prices will go up and profits will decline somewhat in the short term, but labor is a small component to the cost of most products.

And jobless people spend less money than people with jobs.  And people who get paid more can afford to pay more for products.  And a skilled work force can make productivity gains to offset their own costs.

This country did not make the gains in standard of living that it has through cheap labor.  It has done it through tremendous productivity of the American worker.  Don't let anyone tell you that there is a job "Americans won't do".  If Americans won't do it, the wage rate is set too low.

Illegals are turning this country back into a plantation economy thanks to the democrats and their supporters.

Slavery: Alive and well...

"Illegals are turning this country back into a plantation economy thanks to the democrats and their supporters."

What, the state of the black community thanks to entitlement dependancy ever let you think the Dems had progressed past plantation mentality? Let's be honest, entitlements are just the modern version of sharecropping, complete with sleazy deals, false hope, and de facto slavery. The saddest part is that this time it's slavery by choice.

Here's an ironic thought.

Here's an ironic thought.  The MSM was so desparate to talk down the economy to pave the way for a Democrat to take the Whitehouse that they unintentionally skewered their own agenda with open borders.  A Recession or economic slowdown combined with enforcement of the labor laws is wringing out the illegals out of the workforce and thus giving citizens a job.

Yes, Democrats and the MSM, the economic slowdown was a Rovian plot to get rid of the illegals via self deportation thus employing more Americans and set the stage for the elimination of your vote buying scam social programs.  An employed American is not on the public dole and thus no longer beholding to the Democrat Party since an employed American is now in the position of not wanting their taxes raised.  What a bunch of rubes, you fell for it, and not only fell for it, you actually assisted our Rovian plot by spewing the propaganda to change consumer sentiment to slow the economy!!!!  Hahahaahhaa, Muhuhahaha

Oklahoma Unemployment Is Way Down. Will Media Look into Why?

It just goes to prove that using Oklahoma as a good indicator, that once that an untainted legislator enacts strict laws against pariah employers. That not only will the percentage of unemployment drop, but also they are saving massive revenues throughout the whole state. It makes logical sense that when illegal immigrants and family members choose to flee states, such as Oklahoma, Georgia, Arizona and others with disrupting employers sanctions. US citizens and legal residence no longer have to compete for jobs. President Bush's old adage, "that Americans won't do...?" is far from the truth. You only have to read the articles of arrests around the country. Such as a illegal aliens, working in a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, earning $28.00 an hour.

The fact that anti-illegal immigrant states is gaining ground, against the usual suspects like big business, organized religion and a host of other radical special interest organizations, means we can win this war of American survival.

Many of us complain and do literary nothing, except sit on our hands. Those of us who do translate our thoughts into anger and write, email or call their constituency representative. Do have a lasting impression on the lawmakers. One or two calls from irate voters make little difference, but when thousands of us call Washington or the their local office and jamb the switchboard. The outcome to such voters pressure cannot be ignored?

The conclusion is we must raise the stakes against the very well bankrolled, special interest lobby. In the Congress right now pending is the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088). It must be enacted before the new president enters the White House. Already leading Democrats are trying to erode it's enforcement power, as they are also trying to gut the border fence funding.

However, overall their is a bipartisan effort of commitment by the majority of Republicans to bring the SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) to a vote.

State enforcement laws are working very will, but a Federal law is all encompassing and can reduce the illegal alien occupation of our nation by ATTRITION or self-deportation. Once the spigot of jobs is cut off than the foreign nationals will leave or suffer the consequences when caught. This will include very heavy fines and imprisonment for parasite employers. The hierarchy of Democrats are trying to confuse the issue, stating it will cost $30 billion dollars, but the Hudson Institute     says the Federal government is already spending $345 billion dollars a year subsidizing these illegal low wage earners. It is estimated that every American taxpayer paid more than $9,000 for each immigrant in the country, a third of whom are believed to be in the U.S. illegally.

2009 Fed budget per capita $10K per PERSON!

Looks like the 2009 budget is about $3.1T and the current population is 304M. So the per capita FEDERAL budget in the USA is an amazing $10,197 per person (not family). I think that is where the above post is getting $9000 per illegal but just for an earlier year; looks like 2006. This is outrageous. So each 4 person family, Congress is spending $40,789 ($36K in 2006). The 2006 median family income is $48,201! Wonder why the dollar is falling? I don't think they can cut the trees down fast enough to print the money. Ohh I forgot they just put in some more zeros on a computer now. Trees safe. We are not! Anything to do with gas prices going up? Anyhow to be fair, if YOU did not pay in that amount in Federal taxes you are being subsidized too just like the illegals. We paid in 2.5x that amount; first time to break 6 figures in federal taxes. What would Obama do? Take 50% vs. the 29.6% we paid on our AGI. Can you say robbery? I also have a problem with them reducing your donations and other itemized deductions like interest on your home. Not sure how that is considered fair by any means.

Gee I seem to be getting off subject.  I was just curious on where that $9K figure came from so started doing some calculations.  It is pretty clear then that $9K is not really spent on the actual illegals.  That is just their "benefit" by being in the US where $9K per person was spent by the feds.  If there is a 10% direct benefit in useful federal services (being generous I know), that is $900 per person worth of service we and illegals got from our 2006 taxes.  All IMO...

The elites want a never ending flow of illegal laborers...

Jorge Bush, Juan McAmnesty, the Hilda-beast and Osama/Obama all want a never ending flow of 20, 30, 40 million illegal amigos into our country, which will effectively end the United States as a sovereign, English speaking, European based country.

All for the sake of cheap labor for restaurants, farms, hotels and landscaping companies.  Believe me, Meh-hee-co wants to send not 12, not 20 but 30 million more on top of the 20 million already here - using fake or stolen ID's, committing social security fraud, income tax evasion, driving without a license, etc.

North American Union is gonna happen folks.  We're gonna lose our heritage and our nation.

immigration

Coach class vs. deluxe welfare.  Who gets the best?

The Refugee/asylee system may be the stealth bomber of immigration. They are "legal," but it seems that the legal immigration systems are so mismanged or corrupted there is often little difference between a legal immigrant or illegal alien.  Some are just lucky and fall into a better benefit program.  Refugees are given plane tickets to the U.S., and are on a Federal Program.  This is said to expire after about 3 years, and then these people are instructed how to switch to local welfare.  They are heavy welfare users, but are not often talked about because they are "legal" and you don't see them on street corners looking for work.  Many live in the better neighborhoods, are highly educated, English speaking  and qualify for low interest business loans.  You don't see them in the slums with pit bulls and gangs. From what we see in Los Angeles, many probably work under one ID, and recieve benefits under another.  Thus, many stories of such people with expensive cars and food stamps or getting housing benefits, and giving rise to communites such as "Little Ethiopia."  Others are hunter/gatherer types, illiterate in their own languages, expected to learn English and  adapt here.  Among those profiting from the system are the churches who receive money to administer the programs.  For more information search for articles at Vdare.com or the State Department, Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration www.state.gov/G/PRM.  The refugee system is always seeking to expand and bring more in to your neighborhood.  Many refugees are from diverse cultures who practice polygamy (cultural wives), female circumcision, Sharia law, what we would consider to be rape and child abuse, violent family clans, extortion within their own group, etc. There is less checking for disease and other problems with this immigration plan, than with regular legal immigrants.  My details are rough and sketchy,  there is little published on this subject.

Slamming immigrants and churches

I don't agree with that!  Many cultures have come in the USA over 2+ centuries.  I think it is for the best, nothing to be scared of.  Things should be done legally however, and I think having English as the official language is a good idea.
