Here We Kyoto Again: AP Lets Chelsea's Claim That Bush 'Pulled Out' Stand

In a post earlier this evening, Lynn Davidson at NewsBusters chronicled the myriad errors in a March 31 Reuters "Factbox" relating to the Kyoto Protocol.

Among the errors Davidson noted was the wire service's claim that "The United States ..... came out against the pact in 2001" -- implying, but not actually stating, that the US government was perfectly happy with Kyoto until mean old George W. Bush came along. This is, of course, patently untrue.

The error made by Erin Gartner of the Associated Press in covering Chelsea Clinton's appearance at the University of North Carolina on behalf of her mother's presidential bid was more obvious. It is just the latest in a long line of direct or attributed misstatements the AP has let stand about the treaty's history in the US (HTs to Captain Ed at Hot Air and Instapundit):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Clinton told about 250 people at N.C. State that her mother, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, would work to repair the nation's reputation abroad.

"I think the world will breathe a sigh of relief when this president is gone," Clinton said, criticizing Bush for pulling out of various accordings, including the Kyoto Protocol on global warming.

(No, I don't know what "accordings" are either. Gartner meant "accords," but perhaps Chelsea Clinton actually said "accordings.")

Sigh -- as Instapundit says, it's the "same old Kyoto revisionism."

This is from the Wikipedia entry on Kyoto (bold is mine; footnotes not included):

On July 25, 1997, before the Kyoto Protocol was finalized (although it had been fully negotiated, and a penultimate draft was finished), the U.S. Senate unanimously passed by a 95–0 vote the Byrd-Hagel Resolution (S. Res. 98), which stated the sense of the Senate was that the United States should not be a signatory to any protocol that did not include binding targets and timetables for developing as well as industrialized nations or "would result in serious harm to the economy of the United States". On November 12, 1998, Vice President Al Gore symbolically signed the protocol. Both Gore and Senator Joseph Lieberman indicated that the protocol would not be acted upon in the Senate until there was participation by the developing nations. The Clinton Administration never submitted the protocol to the Senate for ratification.

Memo to Ms. Gartner, and Ms. Clinton: Please note that George Bush was not in office when any of the above occurred.

The Bush Administration's position on Kyoto has had nothing to do with "pulling out," but instead has involved "never getting in," and is best seen as continuing the actual policy of the previous administration -- without the sympathetic posturing.

This grievous, obvious historical error about Bush and Kyoto has been committed by AP so many times, and the error pointed out so many times by so many people, including yours truly (Dec. 12, 2007 [NewsBusters; BizzyBlog]; Jan. 16, 2007 [NewsBusters; BizzyBlog]), that Captain Ed says:

At a certain point, it stops looking like errors and more like deliberate dissemination of political propaganda.

I'd say we're past that point.

Just make sure you don't

Just make sure you don't press Chelsea on her misrepresentations of fact...after all, she's only 28 and challenging her is strictly off limits.

Hi fitz..I just came on and

Hi fitz..I just came on and just got done reading this all and you beat me to it...nevertheless, you said it all.

The hypocrisy with Chelsea is getting old already for me...she is 28 , politics is a blood sport, she full well knows it... she entered the arena...

GAME ON....simple as that.

I figure, let the College kids get their kicks with it.  I feel like I can stay above needing an explanation from the kid concerning her daddy's dalliances.

I don't think anyone

I don't think anyone seriously wants a Monica explanation from Chelsea.  But she should be held accountable for her erroneous Kyoto statement.  A simple Wikipedia search provides the truth.

Oh I agree CA...I could

Oh I agree CA...I could give a flying fig about the whole daddy did ditto about anyone of his dalliances to put it nicely...

Like I think fitz said last night...this is just a intended distraction from her mamma's Bosnai blundering repeated lies...

Chelsea's retort

It seems the second time around would have seen Chelsea more prepared for the comeback everybody expects.

Her handlers could have loaded her up a whole lot better than "nunya bidness".

I'm not sure I was the one

I'm not sure I was the one who said that, bigtimer.  But I think there's an element of truth to that argument.  The Clinton campaign is essentially a marketing machine.  They have focus grouped the hell out of this election cycle and they obviously know that Chelsea provides the sympathetic characteristics her mother so clearly lacks.  Whenever they feel the need to stir up the base, they trot out Chelsea to play the unassailable advocate.  She humanizes her parents by being polite and saying the right things (which is usually nothing)...and because some of the comedy shows were so mean to her during her Ugly Betty days, she has enough credibility as a victim to make innocuous questions appear as blunt assaults.  But the Clinton campaign has become more brazen about using Chelsea as a PR instrument, and they've been bullying observers into asking only milquetoast questions and expecting Miss America platitudes as answers.  But the more they exploit her this way, the less acceptable it is for her to run her mouth unchallenged.  She has to expect and accept difficult questions...and this self-righteous act is already wearing thin.

ditto and she's old enough for a nickame

I have dubbed her Princess Chelsea. I would love her next 'none of your business' question to be 'why won't you answer questions from reporters'?

Clintonistas admitted Kyoto was flawed

Shortly after leaving office, ex-Clinton Administration officials admitted the Kyoto Treaty was flawed. Read what they thought in this article from USA Today.

Unfortunately we are going to be hearing more and more of all this while it's crammed down our throats with every chance the msm/politico's get....the agenda fits with all three of the candidates running... why would they change one lick..this fits right in socially via schools and the grown-up lemmings...here is a couple of examples from what they (meaning the leftist msm) are calling the conservative side of the aisle with this candidate running...it is a slow night...just thought I would throw it in for the heck of it...

I think if Chelsea Clinton

I think if Chelsea Clinton is going to voice her criticism of the President, we should be able to criticize her.  Ofcourse, I am dreaming.

It would be news if he didn't buy into GW

Do you think she knows any more about it than having watched Al Gore's movie?

When you consider the miniscule percent of CO2 in the atmosphere vs the amount of water vapor, it's pretty hard to get worried. But even if GW is real, I don't think that there's squat we can do to stop it. We can pour money into the ground along with CO2, and wake up in 50 years wondering where all our prosperity went. The answer is that we will have flushed it away based on a bunch of computer models that can't predict the weather for a week, let alone decades.

Our children are, like Chelsea, being indoctrinated in our schools as we discuss this. The only remedy will be time. After we're all dead, someone may realize that New York isn't under water after all, but it won't matter because they'll be off chasing some new scare.

18 states sue EPA

I posted this on the open thread. The toilet is now flushing and our money and freedom are circling the drain.

18 states are suing the EPA. The assault on reason is now in earnest. The plaintiffs are claiming the the Bush Administration is ignoring "incontestable" evidence of global warming by instituting more stringent carbon emissions on power companies generating plants. Notable quote from the article:  "The EPA's failure to act in the face of these incontestable (italics are mine) dangers is a shameful dereliction of duty," Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said. Once the legislators are on the band wagon who knows where this will lead. But I do know your freedom and your money will be at stake. Be afraid, be very afraid

Well, at least Chelsea is carrying on the ol' family tradition..

...lying through her teeth at every opportunity.

After all, it's a Clinton genetic trait, and Chelsea got hers from both sides of the Clinton family tree.

Well, at least it actually forked. At least I think it did....

repeated lies

that is what they are, repeated over and over until knowledgeable people become so tired of correction that they stop trying to right the truth. Yesterday on The Factor O'Reilley interviewed a professor from Temple, Marc Lamont Hill. He repeated the lie that our government infected blacks with syphlis. We did fail to treat some and did not inform any of the subjects in the infamous Tuskeegee experiments. I have read that protocol was not unusual back then, however it was wrong. But we did not infect the men. They did that on their own (with a partner). I know that O'Reilly knows that, he has corrected it before. But even he must be tired of the routine. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the people that keep passing off these lies as truth.

If the news starts making you negative limit it to 30 minutes a day. I think even God would become frustrated and depressed if He watched network news for more than an hour a day.

"Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. This reminds me of an incident concerning a zoning change in my neighborhood. We residents of a developed neighborhood were told by developers and their sales people that an undeveloped area adjacent to ours would be later developed into single family homes. A new developer came in and wanted high density apartments and condos rather than single family. Many residents came to the zoning meetings and voiced their concerns and opposition to this plan. The zoning commission agreed and denied the permit. We then learned that the developer could re-apply for the necessary permits ad infinitum into perpetuity after only a month (it may have been quarterly. Memory fatigue). Support on our side waned after the third or fourth attempt. The developer just wore us down and finally got his permit.

So much for any "accord"

"The Clinton Administration never submitted the protocol to the Senate for ratification."

So, Chelsea is upset that President Bush "pulled out" of an “accord” (a.k.a an international treaty) that never existed? Just how dumb can she be? Didn't she attend any political science classes in college? If she had, she would understand that no president could sign any international treaty, like Kyoto, without the Senate's approval. Since there is no Senate approval, ether now or in the past, there is no “accord“, period.
