US Media Ignore British Health Service's 'You're on Your Own' Mandates

I've said this before, but it merits saying again: We'll know that the news we're fed every day by the wire services, "newspapers of record," and TV networks is fair, accurate, and complete when those in search of the full picture no longer have to go to the editorials of the Wall Street Journal and Investors Business Daily to fill in Old Media's yawning information and coverage gaps.

Among the latest pieces evidence that we're not there yet -- Thursday's IBDeditorials.com opinion piece, which had this news from Britain's National Health Service (NHS):

The British have found a way to shorten those long, annoying waits for care and lower the rising costs of their universal access system. They'll let patients take care of themselves.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The London Telegraph reported Tuesday that the British government has a "plan to save billions of pounds from the NHS budget." But it won't come without enormous pain.

"Instead of going to a hospital or consulting a doctor, patients will be encouraged to carry out 'self-care' as the Department of Health tries to meet Treasury targets to curb spending," the Telegraph explained.

So when is a universal health care system not actually universal? When Britain's 60-year-old National Health Service can no longer support the weight of its clamoring clientele.

..... The NHS, though, is hoping to cut down on more than frivolous visits. It's looking for patients with "arthritis, asthma and even heart failure" to treat themselves, the Telegraph said.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown characterizes the policy changes as improvements that will allow patients to "play a far more active role in managing their own condition." The British Department of Health calls it an "exciting opportunity."

But what they're really saying is "our universal health care system is broken, and you're on your own."

And we ask yet again: Is this the sort of system we want in the U.S.?

"You're on your own"?

Where have we heard that before?

Try here (August 2007, in Iowa):

(Hillary) Clinton did not mention her rivals for the Democratic party's presidential nomination. Instead, she repeatedly attacked the current Republican President. Clinton criticized Bush for pursuing a "you're on your own" society.

And here (November 2007, in New Hampshire):

(John) Edwards Announces Plan To Take On Health Insurance Companies To Help Families

We need tough new insurance laws to prevent abuses and ensure that Americans are no longer on their own against insurance companies.

There are numerous other examples from Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Edwards elsewhere. And although Barack Obama (who yours truly prefers to refer to as BOOHOO -- Barack O-bomba Overseas Hussein "Obambi" Obama) appears not to have employed "on your own" rhetoric, his health plan clearly advocates aggressive moves towards socialized medicine.

How ironic it is that both candidates advocate reshaping the health-care system and, despite clever bells and whistles, making it resemble the clearly broken NHS. What reason is there to believe the America's health care system would not devolve as Britain's clearly has?

More importantly, why hasn't Old Media aggressively reported on this devolution, and the effect of Britain's real-world experience on the advisability of the nationalized health-care programs being touted by the three major Democratic presidential candidates?

Does not fit the Narrative

The reason the MSM does not print stories about the downside of Universal Health Care is because it does not fit the Narrative. I swear if I hear another so called journalist use the "N" (narrative) word again I am goint to throw something at my perfectly innocent TV. News does not have a NARRATIVE. To quote the dry but allways entertaining Jack Webb "Give me the facts, just the facts."

 And let's not forget

And let's not forget about the excellent Canadian socialised healthcare system.

The Canadian System is Broken

The News Tribune paper in Tacoma, WA had an interesting article written by
a Canadian Doctor about the fallacies and problems in Canada with the Socialized
Medicine system. The link is:

http://www.thenewstribune.com/opinion/insight/story/224748.html

This only expands the problems in comment 2!

The link is abject proof

The link is abject proof Canadians can and do die awaiting rationed treatments.

Socialized medicine is garbage.  It is nothing more than a cleverly disguised system for redistributing medical resources away from those who have earned them into the hands of those who have not earned them.   In so doing, death for lack of treatment is now no longer a problem of the poor in Canada.  It is shared by all members of society there.

right on

Socialism does NOT redistribute wealth; it redistributes poverty.

Here's another UNOFFICIAL way

Here's another UNOFFICIAL way the British gorvnment massages the waiting lists for actually seeing a Hospital specialist once you have been referred by your GP for, say, a cancer screening...

Patients are put on a waiting list to get on the appointment waiting list.

And here's something else American politicians advocating government run Health Care don't seem to know yet...

Once that happens, the voters start to BLAME THEM for everything that goes wrong in their own healthcare.

They also start to demand more and more money be spent. That's TAX PAYERS money.

And that's why government who sociazlize heathcare, like the British have to massage waiting lists - because the people who vote then in and OUT, personally blame them, the politician.

Thanks for the personal

Thanks for the personal insight, Jack. And didn't I read something a few days ago about some wanting care to be refused to people who won't quit smoking, or can't get their weight down; things like that? Was that in Britain?

And it seems to me that as the waits grow longer and patients more frustrated, many citizens would enthusiastically support such restrictions (at least here in the US).

As for spending more taxpayers' money, I think that would probably end up like the public school system (here): they  keep throwing more money at the problem without results; because the problem isn't insufficient funding to begin with, it's the system itself.

And remember, as I keep warning everyone about 'health care'

It's all a massive plot to turn formerly-nice people into control freaks, by very smart and subtle control freaks. And it works naturally and effortlessly for them because of human nature.

Think about a nice guy like Jack. He'd ordinarily, in a free society, want to leave a fat smoker who drinks too much alone. But how must Jack feel about his high Jack-taxes being poured down the drain for this creature's health care despite its chosen dangerous life-style. Suddenly, Jack's wallet compels him to "care" about what Jack formerly didn't care about, to the detriment of civil society. It's already happening to us slowly-boil-the-frog-style, but for some reason Jack still wants to come live here anyway. ;)

And here I was thinking you didn't know Jack.

There won't be any miracles this cycle because although the water is hot, it's not boiling.

These kids better wake up fast or all of us old goats will completely gobble up their grazing land.

I ♣ My Seal

Well, I don't know him...

But from his publicly-stated travel plans, I'm pretty sure he really wants to jump from boiling to hot & become "one of us." To know what's above, though, all one really needs to know is human nature, and that's easy stuff for me.

mother -- that's

mother -- that's correct.

And while there's nothing wrong with individuals taking responsibility for their own health, here's the thing...

The British government FORCES its citizens to pay direct/indirect taxes, and National Insurance tax, to pay for its "national" health service.

It's compulsory. No tax breaks if you take out private insurance. You just pay twice.

So no matter how good or bad the "national" healthcare, it's reasonable to assume that you will, at least, qualify to get it, based on being forced to pay for it.

Whatever your personal choice on smoking or drinking or JUST BEING OLD!!!

And here's another thing -- the NHS is biased AGAINST -- gasp.... poor, more deprived areas.

Middle-class areas get far better health coverage than poor working-class areas. Mmmm.

Check out my exclusive edit of BBC News America's interview with Mrs Clinton: It's news to me!

And yet, Jack, the surveys

And yet, Jack, the surveys I've seen have found:

--The British have a more favorable opinion of their system of healthcare than Americans have of ours

--Despite dissatisfaction with certain aspects of their healthcare, the British clearly prefer their system over ours

Jer

And if a greater percentage

And if a greater percentage of Indians said they were more saisfied with life in India, than Americans are satisfied with their life in America...

you'd draw the conclusion that ...???

India is a better place to live than the world's most prosperous, powerful and successful nation in the entire history of the world?

Apparently survey's show the majority of democrats think George Bush personally blew up the WTC.

People really have to stop accepting that just because someone ticked a box in a survey, that MAKES IT TRUE.

Check out my exclusive edit of BBC News America's interview with Mrs Clinton: It's news to me!

Well, as far as your

Well, as far as your hypothetical Indian/American survey, I would be interested in the reasons underlying the results.

Regarding Bush and the WTC, I would be shocked if there were a poll indicating a majority of Democrats believed he personally blew it up [or conspired with others to do so].

Jer

what ye sow...

When the lame stream media pound the drum of discontent day after nauseating day with regard to American health providers is it any wonder 'surveys' keep getting these results? It's the same with the street level view of the economy. Everyone's working, but they all 'know' that millions are in the soup lines - the media says so. [I've got to stop self-medicating every time I see this crap. My bill for vodka is getting out of hand]

Common good?

If Hussein Obama, Hillary or Edwards impose socialist health care on me, you can bet that the slightest headache, muscle pain, fatigue or scratch will result in a demand for immediate attention, tests and remedy! I will have paid for it and I will want it and won't give a rat's ass about the 'common good'.

You betcha, shooter! And

You betcha, shooter! And that's where the overload comes in.

I've always thought the laws they passed to allow people to sue their HMO's was a plan (call me a conspiracy nut LOL) to bankrupt them. When they can no longer stay in business because of multi-million dollar awards and penalties, the government will have to take over. And anyone who thinks they will be able to sue the government for botched care has grapes for brains.

   And where do

And where do libs/leftists like to grab the money to fund this never ending sink hole?  The military.  There's a reason why were such a lone super-power.  For the socialist/pacifists government run healthcare is a twofer, control over peoples healthcare and gutting that evil war machine.

Do it yourself brain surgery - a demonstrated success!

Obviously, in the national interest, the folks at the National Health Service tried this on themselves first. Many of them tried the 'do it youself brain surgery kit'. After the surgery no one could tell the difference.

Sec. Robert Reich on Socialized Med. - Let the old folks die off

Now, to confirm the British socialist approach to bad medicine, we have none other than former Clinton Labor Sec. Robert Reich, now a Prof. of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, spelling out for students what is requird to make it work. Of course while Reich is pushing for socialized medicine, he at least he understands the cost -- nevermind -- that we must kill off our parents in the process and pay more for it. Naturally, the MSM did not report on this one.

Reich begins by saying that he is going to tell the students things that candidates and policians will not tell us - not if  they want to achieve their agenda, that is:

http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978463

Select the "A Sept 26 Q & A with students at UC Berkeley.. by Reich -- theme seems to be on "can a politician be honest and be elected," or, in other words - we have to force our agenda on a gullible public.

I found his comments at about the 9 minute mark on his health care ideas

.. paraphrasing... "you young people are going to have to pay more." applause (always amazes me why liberals clap and cheer when the news is either bad or not humorous).  "And we're not going to have to decide not to  take care of old people... and you kids are not going to live to be any older (live as long?) as your parents." i.e., socialized medicine in America will lower life expectancy.

I've been saying that was a no brainer for years.

Of course other interesting bits are on the recording, as well. None of the Q's are audible -- doesn't matter.

Reich

Just listened ... This guy is ill. Bleep him.
