As Proof of Its Effect Mounts, Ford and Old Media Continue to Ignore AFA's Boycott

The deadline for talks between the United Auto Workers and the Formerly Big Three automakers (General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler) theoretically looms on September 14.

No one has more at stake in a sweetheart deal than Ford, for reasons almost entirely of its own making.

Oh, the Dearborn-based company has the same daunting challenges as its other brethren at the bargaining table: a too-high cost structure, expensive retiree health-care costs, and a product line in need of serious work. That much is known.

What isn't as well-known, and rarely understood, is that Ford has embarked on a seven-year journey of uber-Politicial Correctness that now threatens to gut its core US vehicle business.

Yesterday, Tom Borelli at Townhall explained the environmental aspect of the company's loss of, excuse the word, focus. As the company moved from concentrating on making great cars to the misnomer known as "Corporate Social Responsibility" (CSR), it hurt itself, and the entire industry:

At the turn of the century, instead of confronting the business threat posed by global warming, William Clay Ford Jr., then chief executive of Ford Motor Company, had a better idea: embrace CSR.

The company declared war on its most profitable vehicles in its first corporate citizenship report in 2000 when it said SUVs contribute more to global warming than cars. Mr. Ford expressed concern that SUVs would harm the company’s reputation and he feared public opinion would turn against the company. According to news reports, the company wanted to be considered the "most environmentally responsible automaker."

..... The political response to fossil fuel fears that Ford helped generate is evident in California. In 2002, the state passed a law limiting greenhouse gas emissions from new vehicles sold in California in 2009. In 2006, California sued automakers over global warming because greenhouse gases caused billions of dollars in damages.

If the harm Ford has done to itself was limited to enviro-nonsense, that would be one thing. But on top of that, the company has embraced far-left and culture-war causes that are far, far removed from anything having to do with making great cars. Two such examples have been its active opposition to affirmative action ballot initiatives and its stubborn support and sponsorship of groups supporting homosexual marriage.

Advocating causes that are at odds with the views of much of your company's customer base may appear not have a lot to do with producing cars. But at a minimum, it distracts always time-crunched management from paying enough attention to it. If you somehow don't agree with that, you can't deny that getting behind causes customers don't like often can, and often does, end up having a lot to do with selling cars -- or, more accurately in this case, not selling them.

Ford has decided to make itself Exhibit A in proving that point.

The American Family Association called for a boycott of Ford over its support of homosexual groups over 18 months ago. AFA doesn't want Ford to join the one-man, one-woman marriage bandwagon; it wants Ford to shift into neutral, as Wal-Mart did late last year, when it appeared that it too might have overinhaled on PC vapors. Wal-Mart specifically stated that it would return to putting all of its energies into what it does best, discount retailing, and threw its extraneous activities overboard.

I am not a supporter of AFA's boycott, because I believe it is hurting too many good people. I recognize, of course, that reasonable people can disagree on this matter, and am not about to criticize anyone who finds the company's positions and actions unsupportable, and a reason not to do business with it.

Unlike Ford, and unlike Old Media, which has thus far virtually ignored what may be the most "successful" boycott in the 21st century so far, I'm not pretending that the boycott doesn't exist, or that it has been ineffective (I covered Old Media's studied ignorance, while it gives inkand bandwidth to other very trivial boycotts, in April. Nothing has changed.). The boycott does exist, and it has had a significant negative impact that, if anything, continues to grow.

Since AFA's boycott call, almost 750,000 people have signed their boycott petition. Ford's monthly sales results during that time have come in as follows (figures were found in an AFA spreadsheet that is consistent with what I have seen reported in the months involved; August's result was added by me from this Associated Press story at MSNBC):

The evidence that the deterioration in Ford's US market position is accelerating is virtually beyond doubt. Ford's monthly US sales during the AFA boycott period have almost always trailed the average result of its competitors by at least 5% to 10%. But August 2007 was even worse: Ford's -14.4% trailed the unweighted average of its five biggest rivals by a whopping 16% (GM, +6%; Toyota, -2.8%; Chrysler, -6.1%; Nissan, +6.3%; Honda, +4.7%; average, +1.6%). Every 2007 decline during the boycott period has been worse than the corresponding decline 12 months earlier.

The sphere of influence of the AFA boycott is arguably every bit of 15-20 million people, and growing. AFA itself has over 3.1 million members who probably influence 3-5 others, while the boycott has the support of 34 other influential pro-family organizations. There's little doubt that Ford has turned its back on at least 10% of car buyers, who also happen to be among those more likely to buy more-profitable SUV and crossover vehicles.

The fact is that anecdotes like this one are more than likely being played out hundreds of times across the country, to little or no publicity:

Pro-homosexual policies at the Ford Motor Company are being cited as the reason one ministry leader broke a longstanding tradition of purchasing vehicles from Ford.

..... ministry leader (Stephen Bennett) says Ford's diversity policies meant his ministry could not purchase a Ford vehicle. "Ford lost out on a huge amount of money," he points out. "..... it is just very sad that Ford continues to promote this agenda."

It's "sad" for more than Ford. Add to the "sad" list at least the following: its employees, whose livelihoods are in jeopardy (a good UAW deal for GM and Chrysler might not be good enough to enable Ford to survive in the US market long-term); its suppliers; its dealers; and the states and communities where its plants and facilities are located.

Short of more years of double-digit unit sales declines that the company can ill afford, what will it take for the deniers in Dearborn, and the Old Media business reporters covering the company, to acknowledge what is happening?

Well, let's just hope that John Edwards or another Dem candidate doesn't get the idea of a government "bailout".. you know, seeing as how Ford is taking a hit for supporting gay "marriage."

On the other hand, let's hope one of them does!

Uhmm, not when it affects the bottom line.  The BOD has a fiduciary trust to the share holders, anything that threatens the bottom line is a failure.  Failure is not an option/choice of the management or BOD.

Exaclty, dscott. Cool Arrow, you may not realize that Ford's shareholder structure is set up so that family controlled shares get a majority vote on Board members and resolutions even though they own a lot less than 50% of the company. This unfortunately gives the family free rein to run roughshod over the interests of other shareholders. True, shareholders know the deal going in, but those who bought in the late 1990s didn't expect a generally well-run business to go all PC. Those who knew about the enviro-nonsense probably didn't expect the company to lose its mind pushing homosexual marriage.

It's no coincidence that two other companies with similar capital structures are also running their companies against majority owners' interests--The New York Times Company, and The Washington Post Company. Both of them have had very poorly performing stocks.

Questionable Business Decision

A large local church has a fleet of aging Ford vans.  They have started replacing the oldest vehicles first.  Even though the Ministry staff all agree the ford vans are more comfortable, a better deal, and have a track record of being long lasting, the church is buying Vans from another manufacturer.  This is only one example.  My wife and I were branded ford.  We have had:

1992 Ford Tempo

1993 Ford Taurus

1999 Ford Taurus

2003 Ford Ranger (still own)

2004 Ford Focus

 

The last vehicle was traded for a 2006 Jeep Liberty, and it is likely when I get rid of the truck I will be getting a non-Ford vehicle.  We have enjoyed our past Fords and found them to be a good value, but since we vote with our dollars, we do not vote to support Ford’s agenda.

I support the boycott...

 I signed the boycott when they first started it... and I love Ford Mustangs.  I don't agree with them getting in on this "gay bandwagon".  If they were donating to other causes then it would seem a trifle easier to deal with, but seeing as how they don't really donate to any other causes then why should the American people, that are straight and the majority, buy these vehicles when their money is going to support gay pride parades?  Why do the gays need support anyway?  They seem to be getting enough from Congress with the supposed "hate" crimes bill that will make it a crime to believe that God mandated "one man and one woman"? 

It galls me to no end when I hear the gay activists crying about how we are so "intolerant" when they are shoving their agenda, not only on us, but down our adolescent childrens throats!  They are trying to make it mandatory that school children as young as kindergarten read literature that states they might be gay, they just don't know it yet.  They are trying to make it seem they are the natural beings and being straight means that you are the abnormal one.  It's sick and ridiculous.

 I support AFA and what they are doing... keeping God's word and fighting for what is RIGHT!  My hat is off to you Don Wildmon!  For having the God given gumption to stand up for what is right and to keep doing it!

Unfortunately, Ford has had

Unfortunately, Ford has had a long storied past of always being on the wrong side of history. From Henry Ford's laughable "Peace Ship" during WWI on, Ford has been a pretty liberal company. Bill Ford is just one in a long line of Fords who just as soon be activists, as businessmen!

Boycott Liberalism

Ford's left wing antics caused me to rule them out of my latest vehicle purchase.  And I am not even a member of the AFA.

The funny thing is, boycotting liberalism these days almost always ensures that you buy from smaller companies.

I don't usually support the AFA because they have been a little "extreme" for me in the past. HOWEVER, I do support them on this particular issue; Ford Motor Company needs to get the hell out of the "gay" political arena and learn how to make decent cars again.

Boycott Ford and Levi's

I am an AFA member and have purposely excluded Ford from my vehicle purchase. In fact, I am constantly spreading the word about Ford's anti-family stance and my friends are taking a stand also.

I have also indoctrinated my family not buy Levi's because they are Boy Scout haters.

Ford Boycott

I'm personally boycotting Ford for reasons outside of the AFA boycott.  My reason: Ford makes crappy vehicles and I won't use them until they come back up to quality standards.

AFA Boycott

I am not a member of AFA but I did sign the petition.  I bought a new Ford every two years or so since 1995.  I always bought Explorers. I bought my last one in 2004.  I bought a Toyota this year.

Well, I bought my first and last Ford two years ago....just because I had to have it.

A 50th anniversary edition T-Bird.  It's cute, I love it....it's a pretty good car (well, except for the little, um, fuel gum-up in six lanes of traffic, for which I'm eternally grateful to still be alive).

But I shall never buy another Ford.  I bought this one....just because...my mum had a 56' T-Bird.

I'm not sure about the next vehicle....but it wouldn't be a Ford, not ever.  Probably not another Benz, actually. 

For the bucks we expend on a vehicle....we deserve the best technology, the best service, the best design, (did I mention the best service?). 

The auto industry is in a huge state of flux....the best company will win....loyalty, customers, and $$$$.

Ford Free Zone

I actually was incensed enough after my electronic fuel pump went out on my Ford for a second time in a year and they wanted 600 bucks to replace it that I wrote to them and informed them I would now never buy a Ford again.

I tell everyone that Ford products are junk. My inlaws right now have a Ford pickup with a danger notice that it has to be fixed or it will start on fire spontaneously. Their car is now in it's second month of "not being able to find out what is wrong with it.

I grew up with Fords and they were tough, but not anymore. We had another car where when it was cold the thing would only start, but then slug due to computer malfunctions.

I loathe the Ford Foundation funding Mexican racism. I loathe Ford and it's sodomite policy and I loathe Ford products.

I drive a Buick now because it rides like a Mercedes at 30,000 dollars less.

I have no compassion for Ford workers as their UAW did nothing to control management and only voted for themselves benefits which are now destroying them and the company Henry Ford built.

Good riddance to Ford and it is entire bogus the costs for vehicles in the manufacturing methods available now. If Ruger can make a rifle stock out of poly which is indestructable, there is no reason no US automaker can not make a pour formed car with a 50 mpg engine which is indestructable as Kevlar.

These auto makers are not auto makers, but have joined the Rockefeller shear the populace mentality. Build garbage cars to make money off of fixing them, have dealers buy up all old cars and junk them for tax deductions so people have to buy new crap cars in the same way cancer treatments only last so long as the insurance money will pay to torture a person.

So trust in your sodomite buyers Ford Motor Company, a group who has no children to grow up to be Ford buyers and because of suicide and aids will be dead within 10 years. Great marketing strategy and I hope like Winchester firearms which was run into the ground after John Olin died that some French out fit buys Ford and shuts the doors all down.

While there is no doubt the AMA ban has had an adverse effect on Ford's market share, their problem really is more fundamental; this company has lost its focus (no pun intended). For years, the light truck  segment (classes 6 7 & 8) was a reliable cash cow for Ford with the F series trucks leading the way. Large leasing companies pushed Ford products because they were reliable. Over the last 15 or so years, that changed. 

Now, as with the passenger car segment, they are getting their lunch eaten by better designed and performing domestic and foreign competition. Toyota is especially worrisome for Ford, as they now have adequate alternatives for fleet owners/managers procuring vehicles in the light medium and heavy truck segments.

Pandering to the "green" or "activist" markets may get points from the P.C. crowd, but it does not push no where near enough units through the line. Private passenger car buyers are spending 25 to 40 k for a car. THEY DEMAND QUALITY. 

Individuals who are responsible for spec-ing, purchasing/leasing and maintaining large fleets have left Ford a long time ago. Higher maintenance costs, increased downtime, and lower residual values on schedule "A"s of used vehicles have made the decision to abandon Ford vehicles an easy one.  

And thats because WE also have to answer to a Board of Directors.
