Follow-up: National Media Ignore Congresswoman's Walkout on General's Iraq Testimony

As noted here at NB yesterday, Kansas Congresswoman Nancy Boyda walked out of a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Friday after hearing General Jack Keane testify about the potential impact of a bill meant to micromanage troop deployment. Keane also testified about progress being made in the counteroffensive that has come to be known as "the surge."

Boyda walked out because the objections to that bill, and the descriptions of an improving situation in Iraq, were apparently too much to bear. She said as much when she returned. Boyda and the fly in her pocket (based on her several references to "we") went into full-rant mode (painfully long and slow-loading audio is here; scroll down to July 27's entry and click on "Audio Transcript"; Boyda's tantrum is about 60% of the way through it; also note that at least a half-dozen hecklers and demonstrators had to be removed during the hearing):

"..... As many of us, there was only so much that you could take until we, in fact, had to leave the room for a while, and so I think I am back and maybe can articulate some things that after so much of the frustration of having to listen to what we listened to."

"But let me just first say that the description of Iraq as if some way or another that it's a place that I might take the family for a vacation, things are going so well, those kinds of comments will in fact show up in the media and further divide this country instead of saying here’s the reality of the problem and people, we have to come together and deal with the reality of this issue."

Nothing in the General's testimony was even remotely suggestive of the family-vacation idea Boyda falsely attributed to him.

As to Boyda's fear that the general's testimony might show up in the media (also in essence a plea not to cover it) -- not to worry, as this Google News search shows:

GoogNewsBoydaHearing072707

In case you're wondering (by this time, you shouldn't be), the New York Times and the Washington Post have nothing relating to Boyda's walkout or subsequent statement.

A few of the Google news links above are to the Associated Press story on the situation, which appears to have been carried almost nowhere. Even that story is about her defending herself and not the impropriety of her snit fit. The Washington Times link is to the end of an editorial, which wraps rather nicely:

We are at a moment when freshman Rep. Nancy Boyda, Kansas Democrat, feels justified walking out on retired Army Gen. Jack Keane at a hearing because she cannot stomach the general's positive assessment of developments in Iraq. Let us hope we will soon arrive at a moment when Mrs. Boyda can be regarded as histrionic and no more.

Perhaps the voters of Boyda's district will have a role in making those histrionics history.

Almost two years ago, all manner of hellfire, brimstone, and ridicule rained down on Ohio Republican Congresswoman Jean Schmidt when she was accused of calling John Murtha a coward (sorry, she didn't; she said, "Cowards cut and run, Marines never do." She never called Murtha a coward; Murtha voted with Schmidt and 401 other members of Congress against immediate withdrawal [i.e., the non-cowardly choice.).

If you're a member of the other party, the consequences of, in essence, calling a general testifying under oath are apparently less severe.

"But let me just first say that the description of Iraq as if some way or another that it's a place that I might take the family for a vacation, things are going so well, those kinds of comments will in fact show up in the media and further divide this country instead of saying here’s the reality of the problem and people, we have to come together and deal with the reality of this issue." - I think this single statement by Boyda is at the crux of the issue at hand. She's not prepared, nor willing, to listen to another perspective on Iraq. She knows the reality and nothing will change her mind (or lack thereof). And of course, there's the obligatory sensationalist and ridiculous lede relating Iraq to a vacation spot, which was in no way intimated by the general. Yet she clearly states that he described it as such. What an incredibly inane comment from a supposedly intelligent congress-critter.

This is just another Liberal "concensus". No other point of view is valid, and only serves to be divisive. And as usual, the Democrat is backed up by the "unbiased" MSM.

Too bad the general didn't

Too bad the general didn't respond by saying something like "since I had to sit here in frustration listening to your nonsense, and since you refused to listen to my report, I refuse to answer your questions."

Laura Ingraham had an interesting soundbite this morning where a representative from SC was asked what success in Iraq means to Dems. His response wasn't that it would be good for America, or that it would be great news. No, his concern was how bad it would be for Dems.

It's no different with this Boyda woman. The Dems are so invested in defeat that they can't stomach any hint of good news coming out of Iraq. She probably left the room because she had to throw up over the possibility that her investment may be taking a nosedive, with no stop order in place.

The frustration of having to listen

Did you catch that? She said she couldn't withstand the frustration of having to listen to the facts.

Congresswoman, the people of Kansas elected you to listen. If you are incapable of listening, or unwilling, I would suggest you step aside and let a real American take your place.

Just like the women who got the vapors and ran away from a scary speech by the President of Harvard, this woman gives professional women everywhere a slap in the face.

Harvard

THAT is a perfect comparison.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch........

WASHINGTON - President Bush's choice to head the military Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday an increase of troops in Iraq is giving commanders the forces needed to improve security there.

"Security is better, not great, but better," said Navy Adm. Michael Mullen, speaking before the Senate Armed Services committee at his nomination hearing.

Yay Kansas.  You have a

Yay Kansas.  You have a great govenator (Governor Kathleen Sebelius) who blames wars on lack of support for Tornados and Congressanators who are just plain not qualified.

Hmm

Come together, right now, over me

Boyda - ".... we have to come together and deal with the reality of this issue."

I was under the impression the place to come together and deal with the issue was in the House Armed Services Committee.  Or is Boyda suggesting everyone in the Committee room should have gotten up with Boyda and followed her to the powder room?  And these people want to dictate our foreign policy?

Small wonder the demedia didn't run with this tantrum by Boyda. I don't see Boyda's emotional breakdown helping Hillary.  America may very well be ready for a Democratic female President, but based on Boyda's shameful conduct one has to wonder if Democratic females are ready to become an American President.

Boyda - ".... we have to

Boyda - ".... we have to come together and deal with the reality of this issue."

By "come together", Boyda means everyone do what I want.

one has to wonder if

(gasp)  You said the unspeakable.

Vacation?

Hmm...landlocked, flat, mostly vacant, abominably hot in
Summer...Can't think of a reason to vacation in Kansas.
Seriously, I also can't think of a time in the last several centuries
when Iraq was a popular holiday destination.

Boyda is just a preview...

... of the reaction we're gonna get from the Dems if/when the situation continues to get better in Iraq.  As with the Global Warming "Crisis", they'll be forced to fall back to a "pay no attention to the facts, the debate is over and the US lost" position.  The more seasoned Dems aren't as twitchy as Boyda, but you know their stomachs are churning when good news comes out of Iraq.

Sad.  How the heck did we get to this point?

That's it, dems do not want

That's it, dems do not want to hear positive news.

We got here because of a three-way vicious circle of the Dems spouting off being encouraged by the MSM allowed by the Republicans lack of rebuttal encouraging more spouting off with more MSM support and no rebuttal...

You get the point.

 I called Boyda's office

I called Boyda's office in Topeka to express some justified outrage, unfortunately they only had some scared kid answering the phones who stated he was only an intern and all he could do was take my name and address down so Boyda could respond to my complaint.  Boyda is the classic liberal wolf in moderate sheeps clothing.  Her entire campaign was a moderate diatribe of "I support the troops", "We shouldn't withdraw we need a better strategy", "I have Kansas values", "I'm not a Washington insider like Ryun" (who ran an idiotic campaign BTW), "I listen to Kansans".  But once safely ensconced in Washington she has voted for surrender, voted for reinstating the Fairness Doctrine (Can't have those nasty commentators exposing her lies!) and basically been a junior Pelosi with her votes, and now her refusal to listen to the facts of a possible victory emerging from Iraq.  Boyda is in short, typical lying liberal scum, cannot win an election as herself, and thankfully we can rectify her tenure as a horrible representative of Kansas 2nd District next year.

kubob, Good for you for

kubob,

Good for you for calling.

And GREAT for you for reporting back.  Thanks!

Keep it up, not only here, but within your community...this will be how we replace all of these lame libs with reps who might actually represent us!

Evening to you kabob... I

Evening to you kabob...

I have had experience calling these people we pay also, they cover their rears with the safest thing they can, have an intern there, that is usually scared to death if any calls start coming in on a major issue...

I have learned how to get around some of this with time, just depends the candidate and state...time of day, the exact info you have on a bill and such, kind of expecting or demanding to have the person above them to get on the phone...blah blah blah...

I hope you are right about knowing your area and being able to get rid of her...

A lot of the so-called conservative dem's that were elected in '06 (as if anyone in the real world believed that) are on the leftist talking head shows..Sestak of Pa. is one...that they just adore and have on for this very reason, they know these people may be in trouble in '08 if they do not make them like the Maverick McCain for the time being.

There has been no call for any of these people to keep their word as they ran...I hope the real conservatives that run against the Boyda's and Sestak's of this world are wise enough to use sound-clips from their very own mouths and then insert captions while they are saying one thing and showing how they voted in the caption below.

I pray the conservatives get a clue how to run hard against these leftist liars that are easy to prove they are with their own words...ad nauseum.
