This local story is only interesting in a national-media way when you recall how our national media are hypersensitive to art that Muslims find offensive. We know from experience that the liberal media generally supports art that offends Catholics and other Christians as a giddy exercise of the First Amendment.
In Trumbull, Connecticut, they’re showing a painting at the public library, reports the National Catholic Register: “Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta stands prominently in the first row of women in a painting called Women of Purpose. She holds one end of a banner that proclaims, ‘Onward We March.’ The other end is held by Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood.” [I trimmed the very top off the image to fit our 16 x 9 format.]
The image also includes two of Mother Teresa’s religious sisters and abortion advocate Gloria Steinem. A local priest, Father Brian Gannon, was appalled.
“Mother Teresa should not be imaged marching in solidarity with Margaret Sanger and hung in a public setting,” he said in the Register story. “It betrays Mother Teresa [to show her] marching in solidarity with Margaret Sanger, who believed in forced sterilization and was a eugenicist.”
When the Missionaries of Charity were informed about this depiction of their foundress — who is now one step away from being canonized a saint — “the office which oversees the authorization of Mother Teresa’s image respectfully but straightforwardly asked the image to be taken down,” Gannon explained, “because it is not representative of who Mother Teresa is.”
In 2007, Mother Teresa’s order objected to Hillary Clinton’s campaign using a photo of Hillary alongside Mother Teresa in a video for her presidential campaign. Sister Nirmala, the order’s superior general, requested that the photo be removed. That wasn’t a media sensation, either – just as the occasion in February of 1994 when Mother Teresa spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast before an audience which included President Clinton, Vice President Gore and congressional Democrats. She explained: "I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion because Jesus said, 'If you receive a little child, you receive me.' So every abortion is the denial of receiving Jesus." The networks never ran that passage.
