NBC's Guthrie Promotes Obama's (Vanishing) Gallup Approval Rate Rise

In mid-December, we noticed ABC, CBS, and NBC had no interest in citing Gallup polls that made the Democrats look like they were on the wrong side of the public. But on Tuesday morning’s Today, NBC substitute co-host Savannah Guthrie gushed to Chris Matthews in the first half-hour of the show that the latest Gallup numbers show Obama ticking up a bit.

“For the first time I think since July, the latest Gallup tracking poll has his approval higher than his disapproval. He's no longer upside-down on that number,” Guthrie reported. “Is this a reflection of things getting better in the economy, or people not liking the Republicans and coming back to President Obama?” But did they? By 1 pm Tuesday, the latest tracking poll had Obama underwater again: 46 percent approve to 48 percent disapprove.

On screen, viewers saw that Obama’s approval-disapproval rating was 44 percent approve/48 percent disapprove on December 20-22 and then 47/45 on December 21-23. In other words, the polls shared two days of numbers in their rolling average.

Matthews told Guthrie "I'm an economic determinist" and absolutely thought Obama's (temporary) improved numbers matched an uptick on the stock market, and a decline in the unemployment rate.

the latest Gallup tracking

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 12/27/2011 - 2:36pm.

the latest Gallup tracking poll has his approval higher than his disapproval. He's no longer upside-down on that number,” Guthrie reported. “Is this a reflection of things getting better in the economy, or people not liking the Republicans and coming back to President Obama?”

That's Savannah Gushrie (not a typo) getting her hopes out there, in a desperate bid for self-validation.

I especially like the "people not liking the republicans."  I'm surprised she didn't also "wonder" if people don't think Republicans have any solutions, or if they are "put off" by the Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich "scandals."

She missed a golden opportunity to drag those items into the story.

more people in this country

Submitted by TruthMonger on Wed, 12/28/2011 - 10:50am.

more people in this country identify themselves as conservative than liberal, people do not like democrats and that is well documented.

this is why the left is desparate to paint Republicans as unpopular and they are very effective at it - they have a huge propaganda machine working on it 24/7 - news media, hollywood, music industry, theatre, sports commentators, churches, talk radio, the list goes on

Congratulations Jimmy Carter!

O does better when he's not on TV

Submitted by Callawyn on Tue, 12/27/2011 - 2:51pm.

The more TV exposure Obama gets, the more his #'s drop (and the stock market drops too).

What we saw this week was the stupid party mishandling the payroll tax issue so badly that they have allowed the D's to pose as tax cutters. Meanwhile, Obama kept a low profile.

So, for a few days O's positives were up about 5 and his negatives were down about 5.

Don't expect this to last. The payroll tax fight was just a blip, it will have no lasting effects. Obama will soon start to campaign in earnest, and as soon as he opens his mouth his negatives will go right back up.

It is NBC

Submitted by John21 on Tue, 12/27/2011 - 3:24pm.

It is NBC; they are very high (figuratively and literally) on the Obamabot Kool-Aid drinking Olympics team. The very idea that you would expect facts or truth for them, says that you have not been paying attention for the last four years.

“When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” Franklin D. Roosevelt

Soon the pestilence of this administration will end and the propaganda medias talking heads will wonder why no one pays any attention to them. They are not very bright.

Journalism?

Kneepads Guthrie and Certifiable Chrissy talking among themselves. Now that's journalism. At least they are good for a laugh at times.

I see the latest Leftist narrative is to tell everyone that things are getting better with the economy.
Of course they are.

Polling the right people

Submitted by ohio granny on Wed, 12/28/2011 - 11:20am.

If you only poll Obama supporters or mostly Obama supporters he will always be above 50%. But boy what a surprise when the real votes are counted. He will lose by a landslide. Egg on the faces of the alphabet soup networks. Their messiah will be defeated. Oh, the crying and gnashing of teeth. What disappointment. The King is dead (defeated).

Can't happen soon enough. Then the rest of us can rejoice.
