Huff-Po Delights In New Yorker Cover Making Pilgrims Illegal Immigrants

The Huffington Post's Latino Voices section is thrilled with the latest controversy-stoking cover of The New Yorker: pilgrims and their bonneted wives in the moonlight crawling through a hole chain-link fence in the American desert. Who knew Miles Standish was a Mexican?

The cover artist claims this is somehow not oversimplified. "Too often in politics, very complex subjects are being turned into sound bites, so it's easy to take them apart," Christoph Niemann told The New Yorker. I draw a parallel between current immigrants and early settlers -- the hope is that it will provide context, to help keep things in perspective."

The name of the piece is "Promised Land." The artist thinks racism plays a telling role in the immigration debate.

"American politics tend to be very practical and open-minded, so why would you consider throwing them out?" Niemann told Huffington Post LatinoVoices, referring to the popular view on undocumented immigrants. "The debate should be about how can a country benefit from immigration. America depends on immigration. The discussion will be more valuable if it is focused on benefits."

Niemann is a German native and legal U.S. resident. "I'm an immigrant myself and what I always found staggering is that there are tons of Europeans who get green cards and I know some of them are not legal from the get-go and that never comes up," he said. "Having a racial undertone in this debate is extremely hurtful. It shouldn't have anything to do with where the immigrant comes from."

"Now, Newt Gingrich might have a huge problem because he said we must take into consideration families that have been here for over 25 years," Niemann said. "I'm not a Gingrich fan but to think that among all his flaws and insanities, what will keep him down is having a more humane view on immigration, I find this insane."

He added, "I wish this whole debate would be a lot more sober and careful. These are people and it's about their aspirations."

This is as stooopid as it

Submitted by ricklail on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 1:36pm.

This is as stooopid as it gets. The reason that there are illegals today is because we have laws. What is the logic behind this article? I know it gets the libs pumped all emotionally but it makes no sense at all. Libs live off this emotion no fact.

We have learned to live with unholiness and have come to look upon it as the natural and expected thing. Aiden Wilson "AW" Tozer

Rick,

You should know by now that logic and libturds never occupy the same space.  It might be considered another example of an oxymoron.

If you don't think that

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 1:50pm.

If you don't think that 'racism' 'plays a telling role in the immigration debate', then maybe you ought to grab a bottle of whiskey, go on down to Ted Kennedy's grave, empty the bottle, and talk to him about his own immigration agenda..............

This guys a legal immigrant??? So I guess that he doesn't feel 'ripped off' that he had to go through all the hoops (and there are a ton of them) to gain his citizenship............while millions of others are just flaunting the law and sidestepping the process.

I'll bet this article is as dumb as the cover.............

If you truly want to relate

Submitted by ThatDude on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 2:12pm.

If you truly want to relate the illegal immigrant problem to the pilgrims and indians, then you'd be more correct in labeling the pilgrims "invaders." Not a positive way to view the pilgrims, but if they wanted to make the analogy, then at least think it through a bit more.

The answer to 1984 is 1776.

Regardless of what "light" it

Submitted by ThePickle on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 2:31pm.

Regardless of what "light" it puts them in the first European settlers were indeed "invaders", but I for one, don't really have an issue with that, as the history of the world is replete with conquering nations and invading hoards.

The history of the world is not people "making friends" with each other it is, was, and likely will always be a continuing saga wherein a group of people has something and inevitably another group of folks will want to take it away from them.

It's how it's been down through the ages. You can talk about "enlightened civilizations" all you want but sooner or later you will, like most people throughout history , be able to justify, either metaphorically, or actually, bashing in your neighbors head, to take what he has because you think it should be, by all rights or even divine providence, yours.

Herr Niemann said, "what I always found staggering is that there are tons of Europeans who get green cards and I know some of them are not legal from the get-go".  How can one be illegal and get a green card?  Or do they get their green cards from the White, European green card drawer?

Then he sobs, "These are people and it's about their aspirations.".  Nope, Herr Niemann, it's about laws and they've broken the law.  Simple really, even for you.

Submitted by bkeyser on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 2:59pm.

but I'm wondering, did this guy articulate a plan to deal with the millions of illegals from Mexico and points south? Usually these critics of GOP or conservative policy do just that -criticize- without ever offering a counter position. Conservatives want to seal the border than take steps to offer a path to citizenship for long-term residents and those without a criminal past (or present). Liberals seemingly want to do... well... not that.

If the libtard cartoonist had

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 3:32pm.

If the libtard cartoonist had an ounce of insight he'd see that his cartoon supports conservative principles. If he believes that the pilgrims were "illegal immigrants" then he'd have to say that the American Indians' Governments had a massive border control problem that led to their overrunning by the "illegal Pilgrim immigrants" or the "undocumented Pilgrim immigrants". So, this supports our position that unless we control our borders, we too can become overrun by illegal/
undocumented aliens and could suffer the same fate to our republic. While that may not bother that commie cartoonist, he does show why repubs are so strong in defense of our borders (a constitutionally required duty).

So true

Submitted by ant on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 6:48pm.

Basically he's implying by his own beliefs that our fate is that of natives that were invaded and slaughtered, and I guess he's OK with that. Many good insightful comments here.
How's this for simplicity? The only thing throughout history that has made land 'someone's' was their willingness to keep it and fight for it. Libtards apparently don't have the will, the common sense, or the testicular fortitude. But most of us already knew that, and can be witnessed in Mexifornia.

moral equivilence screwed over again

Submitted by wizardjr on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 3:56pm.

Europeans landed on a huge continent sparsely populated by a bunch of stone-age savages. Good things and bad things ensued. Much later the decendants created the mightiest economic engine on the planet and offered a pleasant and rich life to those willing to work for it. They even took some of that national wealth and wasted it on the lazy and stupid in hopes they would get off their butts and make a good life for themselves on their own efforts.

Now we have invaders who screwed up their own countries so badly that they are starving to death streaming into the wonderful country created by others in hopes of grabbing off that wealth and sending it to their former $hithole country while pledgeing zero loyalty to the new home they hope to plunder.

Yeah. All the same alright.

The pilgrims' breaking through an erected fence is all wrong

Submitted by lrgon on Fri, 11/25/2011 - 8:32pm.

The pilgrims' first attempts ended in tragedy and all colonists were never heard from again.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roanoke_Colony Today most of the criminals breaking into
America can be found applying for food stamps at a local welfare office and opening up accounts at a local bank to buy pick up cheveeies and taking out mortgages for homes and businessess.

The cartoon implies that the Pilgrims and the current illegal aliens from south of the border are basically the same. The Wampanoag that the Pilgrims dealt with when they bought parcels of land via agreed upon treaties were all done without a chief Dubya,Teddy or McCain that today created the mess we must deal with.

What does the New Yorker think that the Pilgrims did once they arrived? Did the Pilgrims set up tire shop fronts (llanterias for selling marijuana) and mobile taco stands?

While the illegals from south of the border sneak across with permission from Washington they go straight to the welfare office and enroll their kids in a norte-Americano public school. God didn't give them permission to sneak in.

The Pilgrims home schooled their children using the Bible that cautions Christians not to steal; that one shall not covet (lust after) your neighbor's private property.

Here the Catholic Church has failed miserably to properly instruct Catholics living in Latin American countries on the 10 commandments.

When you have a public school system run by a federal Department in Washington you can expect moronic points of view as per this New Yorker article.

I think the cover is funny

Submitted by Crash on Sat, 11/26/2011 - 7:59am.

I mean the idea of American's crawling through a fence into Mexico to flee the Obama-states.

A couple-hundred years before the Plymouth settlers, Spaniards laid waste the native indian population, conquered their lands, and forced them to speak Spanish. Right?

So, now that these Spanish descendants have lost all hope in their political and economic system, instead of fighting to preserve their incredibly rich culture (from what they claim) in their homeland, they look for another land to squander and waste.

Wait a minute...

Submitted by Chupacabra on Sat, 11/26/2011 - 9:33am.

If the pilgrims were illegal aliens then I guess the "Native Americans" were too.

Didn't they illegally cross a land bridge connecting Siberia and Alaska about 20,000 years ago to populate the North and South American Continents?
