AP: October Snowstorms Could Be Caused by Warming...Or Actually, No
Via James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal, we've learned how shameless AP reporter Seth Borenstein can be about climate change hyperbole. His latest story began: "Freakish weather disasters — from the sudden October snowstorm in the Northeast U.S. to the record floods in Thailand — are striking more often. And global warming is likely to spawn more similar weather extremes at a huge cost, says a draft summary of an international climate report obtained by The Associated Press."
Borenstein touted how AP received the final draft of a new report from "the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," but then added his introduction about the October snowstorm isn't really accurate: "The snow-bearing Nor'easter cannot be blamed on climate change and probably isn't the type of storm that will increase with global warming, four meteorologists and climate scientists said. They agree more study is needed."
Well, then again the "draft" seems more important a word than the "final," since "Chris Field, one of the leaders of the climate change panel, said he and other authors declined to comment because the report is still subject to change." But predictably, the world is only going to get worse unless the climate "mitigation" gets more radical:
The final draft of the report from a panel of the world's top climate scientists paints a wild future for a world already weary of weather catastrophes costing billions of dollars. The report says costs will rise and perhaps some locations will become "increasingly marginal as places to live."
The report from the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will be issued in a few weeks, after a meeting in Uganda. It says there is at least a 2-in-3 probability that climate extremes have already worsened because of man-made greenhouse gases.
This marks a change in climate science from focusing on subtle changes in daily average temperatures to concentrating on the harder-to-analyze freak events that grab headlines, cause economic damage and kill people. The most recent bizarre weather extreme, the pre-Halloween snowstorm in the U.S., is typical of the damage climate scientists warn will occur — but it's not typical of the events they tie to global warming.
"The extremes are a really noticeable aspect of climate change," said Jerry Meehl, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. "I think people realize that the extremes are where we are going to see a lot of the impacts of climate change."
The final sentence is a doozy: And global warming isn’t the sole villain in future climate disasters, the climate report says. An even bigger problem will be the number of people – especially the poor – who live in harm’s way.
One of the villains in "future climate disasters" are the poor humans who reproduce too much?

What is the correct temperature supposed to be ?
When it is too hot in January they complain and when it snows in Malibu they complain.
We got an early snow that broke records.
Isn't that supposed to be good....?
It wasn't too hot.
Apparently now ALL weather is the result of "climate change".
To be honest...I sort of like it when it's warm.

What liberals hate the most is when they can't "control" something. Weather is something that is out of our control as humans, so, the libs find some way to blame humans for all natural disasters. This way they can control our wallets with all sorts of taxes and "regulations" to solve the weather crisis. I love when weather forecasts are wrong, it just shows that one person is in control, GOD. And you know the liberals REALLY hate that one....

Every time I hear these people talk about global warming or climate change and discuss the sacrifices our society must make, I think of all of the sacrifice scenes I have seen in movies and tales I have read in history.
Apocalypto, burnt offerings, Year One. Throughout our history we have thought that if we sacrifice that which is important to us, we will be able to control the weather or climate.

Yeah, the gods were demanding back then. They needed the sacrifice of the strongest and best warriors to keep global warming in check. Of course in coincidentally kept the top contenders for roles of leadership out of the way- kind of like the MSM does today. How civilized we have become.
You gotta love it.

Then he defeated his purpose, because he said the storm wasn't caused by climate change.
But not until the 6th paragraph of his story.

Is it reasonable to think that people would read about "extreme weather" and think about the October snowstorm unless they made it to the 6th paragraph?

You are correct, the admission that this storm was not a result of GW doesn't come until way down in the story. Because it was singled out by Tim, I thought (and we all know what "thought" did), it was sort of a disclaimer at the top of the story. Kind of like "while scientists can't say that this storm......blah, blah, they warn that we are in for....etc. etc.
The first part of the article does deal with dire predictions before finally mentioning that this storm doesn't fit the template, and you're right- a lot of people won't get that far.

As 26CX said, the purpose was to get the common reader who is too busy or too lazy to read the whole story to go away with the GW party line.
We are all taught that, when we write, to touch on the who, what, when, where, how in the first paragraph or so. When you spend that space telling the tale of GW causing the storms, you can rescue your integrity with the truth later in the article where most readers do not go.

What is "marginal?"
Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 11/04/2011 - 1:23pm.
"The report says costs will rise and perhaps some locations will become "increasingly marginal as places to live.""
Humans have, over the last 25 to 30 thousand years, managed to colonize just about every location possible, with the exception of the South Pole (which all life seems to despise. Not even the penguins actually live there. Even the males who incubate and, eventually, feed their own young with the tiny bit of nutrients that managed to save, get the hell out as soon as their mates come back.). From deserts to rain forests, from mountains to valleys, humans have, somehow, without the help of those vaunted "scientists" and their "consensus," managed to not only survive, but to thrive. Which begs the question: what, exactly, is "marginal" habitat for humans?
You know, mankind, as a whole, was much better off when we thought that the Gods controlled everything. At least then we thought there was a chance for survival in "inhospitable" lands. If we human had, for our entire existence, relied upon "scientific consensus" to make decisions as to what is "viable habitat," we would all still be living in Olduvai Gorge.
A perfect example of the follies of "scientific consensus," especially amongst "climate scientists," is Mesopotamia. It is scientifically impossible for people to colonize a desert. There's just not enough yearly precipitation to support human life for longer than a day or two, as any "climate scientist" could tell you. Of course, someone forgot to tell that to the Mesopotamians, for they have lived there for thousands of years. So, put that in your pipe and smoke it, climatologists!

According to the Obama administration, the definition of a "marginal place to live" is any area where the people don't have access to the Internet and high-speed rail service.

I have been reading news articles for months re El Nina and meteorologist predicting that this winter due to El Nina will be colder and wetter in many areas across the nation, some predicting a colder winter then in "20" years.
Grant it the articles on El Nina were no where near as suspenseful and dramatic as a good freaky global warming tale.
