'Lifelong Catholic' Michael Moore Bashes Pro-Lifers as 'Really, Really Weird...Uterus Police'

By Tim Graham | September 05, 2011 | 15:17

Tim Graham's picture

When the Washington Post promoted snippets from Michael Moore's forthcoming book on Sunday, they portrayed Moore as a "lifelong Catholic" -- which is a bit of a strange label when a paragraph later, the Post was bashing the "uterus police" who oppose abortion as "really, really weird."

But then, the "Catholic" blurb the Post picked let Moore imagine himself as a playwright composing an "avant-garde" version of Jesus dying on the cross, where he lectured like a liberal about how nobody else had compassion for the poor, the sick, and the downtrodden:

On Jesus: A lifelong Catholic, Moore penned a play — “a little avant-garde number about Jesus’s crucifixion” — while struggling through his first and only term as the lone hippie on his home town’s school board. “ ‘This is where you people want me?’ Jesus shouted to the audience,” Moore writes. “ ‘Just nailed to a cross? So you don’t have to listen to me anymore about caring for the poor or the sick or the downtrodden?’ ” The school board held a special election to recall Moore, but he prevailed.

On abortion: In 1971, while still in high school, Moore cared for a friend who was almost killed by a botched illegal abortion. “Human life begins when the fetus can survive outside the womb,” he writes in a footnote. “Some people, I guess, just like to be the uterus police, the bossypants of other women’s reproductive parts. And that has always struck me as really, really weird.”

Apparently, neither writer Justin Moyer nor anyone else at the Post can imagine that Jesus might be heartbroken at a woman killing her unborn child, that he might have lamented that kind of savagery from the Cross. Somehow, the unborn child is never the "downtrodden." But they can imagine a "lifelong Catholic" who thinks his Pope and bishops and priests are all serious weirdos.

Meat-eating vegans

Submitted by Tim Graham on Mon, 09/05/2011 - 3:54pm.

It used to be you could be an Irish Catholic Democrat...and there were many, like Moore's parents, and like my relatives. But not so much since Roe vs. Wade. "Pro-life Democrats" have faded dramatically over time. Dennis Kucinich (Mr. Department of Peace) even decided to support the violence of abortion in his quixotic pursuit of the presidency.

You don't have to be a Republican to be a Catholic. But reporters should know that Catholics are encouraged to support the sanctity of life -- so being an ardent pro-abortion Catholic is like being a meat-eating vegan.

Fiction

Submitted by KC Mulville on Mon, 09/05/2011 - 3:50pm.

I love how the observation about abortion begins with showing Moore being compassionate (caring for a friend), as if that lends credence to what he's about to say. That's just a different form of ad hominem argument, by arguing that Moore must be right because he's a compassionate person.

Of course, the story that Moore formed his conviction about abortion based on his compassion for this friend is probably apocryphal. Moore has a track record of inventing and framing stories to advance his agenda, and the truth is his first casualty. Even so, even if true, one has to wonder if Moore has ever questioned a conviction he came to ... in high school.

So many of these guys came to their worldview in high school (Ricky Gervais said he became an atheist at the age of eight), and have never shown any evidence of intellectually advancing beyond that. Maybe that's why their arguments are so ... adolescent.

Let's see the WaPost & M Moore go after Carter & the Dalai Lama

Submitted by Gary Hall on Mon, 09/05/2011 - 3:51pm.

Let's see the WaPost and Michael Moore go after Jimmy Carter & the Dalai Lama like they go after the majority in the US:

  • President Jimmy Carter: "I never have felt that any abortion should be committed -- I think each abortion is the result of a series of errors," he told reporters over breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, while across town Senate Democrats deliberated whether to filibuster the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. because he may share President Bush and Mr. Carter's abhorrence of abortion. "These things impact other issues on which [Mr. Bush] and I basically agree," the Georgia Democrat said. "I've never been convinced, if you let me inject my Christianity into it, that Jesus Christ would approve abortion." The Washington Times - November 4, 2005

Next time that Moore and Carter sit next to each other at a Democrat National Convention, we can only hope that someone holds up a sign calling their attention to this matter - and that Matt Lauer shows the clip on his broadcast.

And

I am sick and tired of

Submitted by talkradio55 on Mon, 09/05/2011 - 5:16pm.

I am sick and tired of Democrats pretending to be Catholic or any kind of Christian. Moore is just another in a long life of Democrats who fake Catholicism to curry favor with people they hate anyway (Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, the Kennedys (except for Eunice Shriver), John Kerry, et. al.). The Left wants to carry the name of Christian, but they don't want to actually live by any of God's commands. They want to rewrite Jesus' teachings so that he was a Communist who lived in a commune, redistributed wealth, hated people with money, and despised self-interest. Social justice is the ruse by which they use the Bible to undermine Christianity and with it, any pretense of a moral society.

Standing in a church once a week doesn't make you a Catholic anymore than standing in a garage once a week makes you a Toyota.

Funny how the MSM never investigates this angle of the argument. That a belief maintained in opposition to the core tennents of your chosen faith negates that faith. They never question a person who believes as they themselves do as to whether ot not it causes a dissonance in their thinking. How can killing an innocent person be a sin, except for a baby? There can be no more innocent individual. If their religious leaders all condemn a particular practice yet they themselves condone it, how can they maintain that they are still followers of that same religion?
