Women's Magazine Pounds Megyn Kelly About Fox News Bias, Palin's Offenses Against 'Free Speech'

By Tim Graham | August 14, 2011 | 07:17

Tim Graham's picture

Via Mediaite, we learn Fox anchor Megyn Kelly granted an interview to the women’s magazine Marie Claire, but her interviewer, Yael Kohen, apparently never watches the media. Even after a huge cover spread and interview in Newsweek magazine, Yael sticks to an old (and false) liberal talking point in playing “gotcha” with Kelly, asking " I assume you believe in free speech. How do you feel about the fact that Sarah Palin doesn't talk to the press unless it's Fox News?"

Earth to Kohen: Palin, a private citizen, exercises free speech in deciding which interview proposals to accept. Kelly strongly suggested the question wasn't factual: "Well, I don't know if the premise of the question is correct, because she has talked to other outlets. I think there are certain outlets she doesn't like. And I think she thinks she's been treated unfairly by people in the press."

But the liberal interviewer persisted that Palin had to submit to liberal-media bombardment:

MARIE CLAIRE MAGAZINE: But isn't that part of the job? Isn't that what politicians have to do?

KELLY: I suppose so. If I were Sarah Palin, would I want to sit in an interview with someone who was secretly out to get me? Probably not. But as a journalist, do I want candidates to make themselves available to all of us? Yes, I do. I think it's a good idea.

Then Kohen became more direct in her aggression against Fox News:

MARIE CLAIRE MAGAZINE: Do you think that ideologues like Glenn Beck have harmed Fox's reputation as a legitimate source of unbiased news?

KELLY: If Fox had promoted Glenn Beck as a straight newsman who would be delivering the nightly update, like Bret Baier, then yes. But it was clear from the beginning — and it remains clear — that Glenn Beck is an opinion host. He doesn't report as a journalist and isn't making any attempt to be a journalist.

MARIE CLAIRE MAGAZINE: Do you think Fox is biased?

KELLY: No. Fox News covers stories that some other news outlets won't cover. We ask some questions that other news outlets wouldn't ask. And sometimes that's perceived as bias by people who've grown up in a world where there are only liberal outlets.

No one will find it surprising that this women’s magazine didn’t pound Mika Brzezinski about whether MSNBC was biased when she was interviewed earlier this year. Somehow, it never came up. But they suggested Kelly deserved being meat in Jon Stewart’s satire grinder:

MARIE CLAIRE MAGAZINE: He has called you out for being a hypocrite. For example, you challenged a guest who accused your network of using Nazi rhetoric in reference to Democrats. Then Stewart ran clips of your colleagues doing exactly that. Is he taking you out of context, or do you take his point?

KELLY: I had never said it didn't happen. My guest asserted that it happened every night on Fox News, and I said, "That's not true." And then Fox critics put words in my mouth and tried to criticize me for them. Jon Stewart definitely takes [things I say] out of context for humorous effect. And I think he would admit that. But it's really one of those can't-lose situations because every time he mocks me, it increases my visibility and bumps my ratings. So mock away!

"A political hack is a negative term ascribed to a person who is part of the political party apparatus, but whose intentions are more aligned with victory than personal conviction. The term "hired gun" is often used in tandem to further describe the moral bankruptcy of the "hack"."

I think she's smart, and has convictions, which she relays with personal anecdotes. How that translates into a hack is beyond me!

As for me, I would like to see Megyn interview Mika using the same flimsy, tiring, brainless, pointless questions they throw at anyone who is not a liberal! Now that would be entertainment!

Fear is at the heart of Palin's dismissal of all media not favorable to her beliefs. Conservative news treats her with kid gloves, only asking questions she's had pre-written answers to focusing instead on her small base of fans, her cheerleaders if you will. This is why she will stay out of the race. She knows she won't ever face CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN one on one, so she uses rightist news to prop her up. Your Two Brains Aren't Working.

Submitted by RefudiateObama2012 on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 10:30am.

Your contention that Palin only answers pre-written question is without merit.

Your contention that Palin dismisses media not favorable to her is false. She speaks out against those who lie about what she says or does.

Palin is under contract with FNC which precludes her from studio appearances at other networks. On the first leg of her bus tour, she gave seventeen press avails, and according to the media which followed her, she gave candid and lengthy answers until they finally ran out of questions for her. At the Iowa fair, she talked to the scrum of media for over an hour. Don Lemon of CNN said she actually turned it into a press conference. In Long Island, she had a lengthy Q&A by an admitted Democratic moderator. She was recently interviewed by Newsweek. The meme that she doesn't talk to anyone other than Fox is a lie.

Obviously your two brains don't have the capacity to make honest or informed commentary.

Your argument

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 10:30am.

is the same reason Obama got elected. He was not only never asked a tough question, or pinned down to details of his plans, but his sphincter was licked by every alphabet network with a microphone. He admitted in his book that he smoked pot and did coke. Did you ever hear it brought up in an interview? They spent 8 years trying to find any "coke buddy" of George Bush. Would you consider that biased?

Tell me any liberal that gets tough questions EVERY time they are on any of the non-FNC outlets you listed and I'll grant your opinion to be valid. FNC presents a viewpoint different than any of them. A thinking person might consider it odd that of all those networks, NONE of them have a viewpoint any different from the rest.

News gathering used to be a very competitive business. Every paper, magazine or network wanted to separate themselves from their competition. They have since surrendered their position as Watchdogs of Freedom and taken the mantle of Lapdogs of the Democrat Party.

Submitted by Don L on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 1:32pm.

Leftist media objectivity is rarer than a purple-polar bear wearing Gucci.

To argue if the left has a bias, is to give their bias credibility as an objective question. When the issue comes up, I just laugh -it drives them crazy, because they want your to argue the issue.

It's like those who don't believe in God, but spend all their time fighting Him. If He doesn't exist -why are you....?

So -why argue media bias - it and swamp gas both exist, everyone knows it , especially the leftist media - and have for a long time.

It's one of his little games, making up outrageous "identities" to troll with here.

First time out, was a black female! Then a bunch who were banned so fast we never did get the faux backgrounds. Then, of course, the straight, married guy. And now, the gay high school kid.

Is there a new branch of psychiatry for internet wierdos? Because I think you could use NB as a lab and come up with some beautiful theories to present. Think of the possibilities! And as the Vet would say....what are these idiots like in "meat space"? (That still cracks me up).

No special branch of psychiatry, YET.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 5:24pm.

We take note of new diagnoses every day. I don't know whether "internet trolling addiction" will be defined by the upcoming DSM-V, but certainly some kind of techno-compulsion certainly will.

I already like using NB in my presentations to medical students, psychiatry and neurology residents. I blind the information, of course, but most of these multiple-identity trolls are so easy to detect with a few basic forensic psychiatry techniques.

The clues usually are:

1) Choosing a liberally desirable demographic combination - and the more dramatically composed (e.g. quadraplegic half-Vietnamese, half-Hispanic Lesbian in a plural marriage and "persecuted" by religious zealots) the better - garners more facets upon which to claim victimhood - very classic strategy of the attention-seeking borderline personality types

2) Constantly asking questions that are of the "have you stopped beating your wife yet" variety - add in narcissistic and obsessive components - with a touch of schizophreniform (not what you think - this means "loner" in borderline personality disorder subtypes) and maybe even a dash of sociopathy when you consider the conflict they attempt to creaate

3) Claiming to be older (therefore the "age comes with wisdom" fallacy) or younger ("you meanies are picking on a kid") and therefore believing to be worthy of immunity to antisocial or outrageous statements

4) Short, imitative quips - e. g. a certain other troll - diatribe picked up from other websites and deposited here like some kind of bone yard - noticeable in a combination of posts that read like a talking points fax from Jay Carney's office, Kos or moron.org

and....

5) Changing the subject constantly in a rather bad attempt to evade detection - not unlike a thief changing an MO to throw off the police on his/her trail

Those are the behaviors I have seen from our current crop of trolls. The parallels to trolls past (zips, Ted, etc.) are too obvious to ignore.

I'd be happy to be your research assitant

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 5:43pm.

Gratis, of course.

It really is too bad we've had two re-sets here, we had a (multiple retread) troll named Hater once back in the Wild West days, who had a whole little gang of imaginary friends (Matt busted them talking about us over on Stern Fan Network, it was beyond hilarious "Help Me St. Jimmy, I'm getting my ass kicked over there by those evil conservatives!").

And of course various incantations of about eight or ten others, but Deddy is the absolute sorriest retread here. I think it's because he finally fessed up, changed his behavior for a while, but then became more and more agressive and nasty (as we've seen in the latest) until the BIG meltdown (around Christmas)...with 3 successive aliases within days of each other who all flamed out within hours. And of course, several more attempts since then.

When you write your book, I'll expect a dedication to the fabulous NewsBusters, which as you know, is a super duper "techno-compulsion" lab on internet trolling.

BTW, did you see Kingfish's "rant generator" link earlier? I shared it w/my Gator board members and we are using it for comedic effect with our trolls there. The sheer nonsense the rant generator puts out confuses the trolls mightily! (We used to derail their nonsense with food & recipes).

P.S. I think you just wrote the outline for the chapter on trolling in "Basic Internet Moderating 101".

Docsam & Blonde: Right on target.

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 12:31pm.

The media claims “special prosecutorial rights” for itself when it comes to reporting/interviewing private citizens. Even if Sarah Palin was an announced candidate, she would still have the right to refuse to be interviewed by any news outlet of her choosing.

If we think about it, there are only four candidates in the race who are “public officials” (Bachmann, Perry, Paul, and McCotter). The rest are still private citizens, and will remain so until they take the oath of office.

I’m not suggesting those "private citizen candidates" should deny all requests for interviews by hostile outlets… just that they have the right to do so if they wished.

She's more talking about "privilege of the press" that the press think they have to form opinions about people. If Palin's not interviewing with them, then they can't steer her message to form opinions, and not controlling the debate is very frustrating to them.

Freedom of the press means that if somebody decides to talk to you, you can publish what they say without fear of government reprisal. But as liberals see the Constitution as more manifesto than agreement, they believe the the freedom against Congress' abridging the press gives the press some ideological value as central to our democracy--and just like the free market they get confused between actual actors and theoretical benefactors. So just as they see crooked firms a reason that nobody should value free markets, they see the value of a free press invested in the existing institutions of the press, thus making an affront to ABC a denial of the value of a free press.

I can't think of her name offhand, but she is a regular on Fox, and she's actually pretty articulate and quick and smart - but she leans towards the lib side of things.

I was having my morning coffee before work when that was going on, and Kelly just took this gal apart on EVERY point........and from what I've seen and heard of Mika, she couldn't even keep up with the woman who was being ripped by Kelly.

Short answer: No

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 08/14/2011 - 5:20pm.

"But isn't that part of the job? Isn't that what politicians have to do?"

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Politicians are accountable to their constituents, and no one else. They're not accountable to the Nation as a whole. They're not accountable to the President (although the President IS accountable to them, hence the Constitutional requirement of "advise and consent,' and, especially, the State of the Union address), and they're not even accountable to each other, other than each House's ability to investigate and punish their own members for Rules violations. The Press, especially the National Press, is not a part of their constituency. WHY should politicians be forced to answer their questions?

Politicians don't have to answer ANY questions posed by the press. They don't even have to answers questions posed by their own constituents (nor do they have to answer questions posed by the Court!), but that's usually a bad idea as far as the constituents are concerned. Then again, answering those questions may be just as harmful as total silence.

As President Lincoln once said: "I am rather inclined to silence, and whether that be wise or not, it is at least more unusual nowadays to find a man who can hold his tongue than to find one who cannot."
