Madison Lefties Say Democracy Died With the Geese

Somehow, liberal Mayor Paul Soglin of Madison, Wisconsin is still too conservative for some. The Capital Times reports there will be a protest (or a "memorial service for fallen fowl") tomorrow to denounce the city's unannounced Canada goose roundup. Leftist animal advocates said democracy died with the geese:
"This is a chance for us to get together and mourn the loss to the community not only of the geese, but of the democratic process. We want to know the mayor and the Parks Commission know that we're not going to go away," says Kathie Free of Madison, an organizer of the protest that will include members of the Alliance for Animals and other animal rights groups...
Free and others say the kill was done without adequate notice. One evening the geese were there; the next morning they were gone from Vilas, Olin Turville and Brittingham parks and from public shoreline along Wingra Creek.
Madison parks officials approved the goose kill, at a cost not to exceed $4,900, on May 11. Keeping the precise details of the kill quiet was intentional, Wallner says. "It was done at five in morning because they didn't want people out to scare off the geese," he says. "Was it transparent? Not totally. The city did not want publicity."
That approach makes sense to ensure a successful roundup once it was decided that some geese would have to be removed, Wallner says. And while the public meetings on goose control were dominated by people opposed to killing them, many other city residents were calling for effective action, he says.
"I heard from many, many citizens saying the geese have gotten out of control. They were tired of kids getting covered with goose poo at soccer. Folks could see the parks being diminished and the beaches being soiled," Wallner said. City-county public health officials say goose feces contributes significantly to the closing of city beaches because of bacterial contamination.
Some citizens seem to have their minds made up already about the fallout of the kill. "I really feel betrayed," says Free, who added that she worked as a volunteer on Soglin's campaign. "It's needless carnage in our parks, and that shouldn't be happening in a city like Madison."
In a separate story the Capital Times added the geese were "taken to a meat processor and turned into gooseburgers for area food pantries." [Hat tip: Vicki McKenna.]

Round it out with some gravy, a nice crisp salad, some fresh mashed taters, steamed pole beans with bacon, onions and a little garlic, a chilled bottle of a decent Pinot Grigio, and you've got yerself a pretty nice dinner going.
:-)
I wish they had sent me one of those geese, 'cause they are not the cheapest poultry at your local Publix.

and put in some succulent roast goose.
Even in my small town these filthy birds foul up the walking paths and chase little kids. It's time to recognize these wild birds for what they are.... food!
Oh, and as for that democracy thingy...

...the sooner it dies, the better.
Constitutional republics are the way to go.
You know, like we once were.

I was thinking the same thing, wanted to say "Oh good, one less democracy to worry about."
Again, I know it sounds bad, but like you said, this is a Constitutional Republic. A democracy, like utopia(or communism and socialism), always sounds good on paper, but never in practice.

That's because democracies never fail to eventually vote themselves out of existence.
Had we stuck to the constitutional ideals laid down by our founders, we wouldn't be in the hideous situation as a nation we now find ourselves in.

The more I read about the Roman Republic/Empire the more I see the U.S. Liberty and individualism is traded for bread and security. Those who want power simply promise more and more to the masses.
Oh, how I wish!

Oh, how I wish there would be a Canadian Goose roundup here! Those danged birds have, literately, killed the grass, as well as bushes, trees, flowerbed, etc. in several Bloomington locations, all because they congregate in large groups and poison the soil with their "droppings" during their migrations (nasty stuff, those droppings, highly acidic and full of diseases). Bloomington, being close to the Mississippi and having a lot of open fields is a magnet for those birds. They come there by the tens of thousands, every spring and fall. They used to do the same here in Minneapolis, along Minnehaha Creek, but, finally, the city learned to keep the tall grass along the banks (they use to mow it right to the water's edge, the idiots) so those stupid birds have stopped poising the creek as well as the land. And, yes, they pretty much killed the creek everywhere they congregated.

We've had that problem in PA also. Wouldn't it be great if hunters could have shoots for these geese if they agreed to donate a certain amount to homeless shelters to feed the poor? Because in most locations their natural predators have been killed or run off (at least here in suburbia).
But the environmentalists/PETA people would never allow it.
Of course they won't allow it

Of course they won't allow it. Those people don't care how much damage the over-population of Geese causes to the environment, especially to the native, winter-dwelling birds that rely upon the food that the Geese now gobble up insatiably. I've heard so many people complain that Grouse, for example, are disappearing here in Minnesota and claim that hunters are to blame, but they never once even realized that, no, its not the hunters that are decimating the Grouse population, it's the grossly over-populated Canadian Geese who eat the food that the Grouse rely upon to survive winter. Cull those Geese and, viola, the other fowl, like Grouse, and wild Turkeys, will experience a comeback! But good luck explaining that to the "environmentalists." They just can't seem to figure it out.
