Liberal Media Skip Study That Found Stimulus 'Forestalled or Destroyed' A Million Private-Sector Jobs

On the front page of Wednesday’s Investor’s Business Daily, reporter David Hogberg reported that a new study found President Obama’s “stimulus” plan “may have destroyed or forestalled employment, including more than 1 million private-sector jobs.”

Destroyed or forestalled? Our media only cites studies which estimate the number of jobs Team Obama “saved or created.” Economists Timothy Conley of the University of Western Ontario and Bill Dupor of Ohio State University showed the “stimulus” saved 443,000 government jobs, but caused a net loss of more than a million jobs. This is one of those studies only Fox News noticed. But on CNN’s American Morning on Thursday, a Time magazine editor was still calling for more “investment” in infrastructure:

KIRAN CHETRY: I remember when we were talking about the stimulus, obviously, that's become a dirty word because of our debt and our deficit and all of that. We were talking about that which would help in the short-term but eventually lead to long-term success. What happened to all of the infrastructure projects? Things we were talking about to get people working again but also improve the country.

RANA FOROOHAR, TIME MAGAZINE: I think what happened is politics. We have an incredibly co contentious environment in Washington. There is a continuous growth as Fareed [Zakaria]  mentions. We could spend $2.2 trillion on infrastructure in this country and put a lot of people to work.

On that morning, an IBD editorial on the Conley-Dupor research underlined that infrastructure jobs actually declined:

A new study by economists Timothy Conley of the University of Western Ontario and Bill Dupor of Ohio State found that despite the influx of all that federal money, highway construction jobs actually plunged by nearly 70,000 between 2008 and 2010.

As the authors explain, many states simply took the free federal money and shifted their own highway funds to meet other needs. In fact, in some states, highway spending dropped, even with the added federal money.

Examples cited in the study:

– Texas got $700 million in highway stimulus funds last year, but spent $560 million less on its roads in 2010 than it did in 2009.

– New York's highway spending was basically unchanged between 2009 and 2010, despite getting $522 million more in federal highway bucks.

– Michigan boosted its highway spending just $17.4 million, far below the $189 million extra the feds handed the state for highway improvements.

The Department of Transportation, meanwhile, found that 21 states weren't abiding by rules meant to prevent just this sort of shell game.
No wonder Ernst & Young's Urban Land Institute concluded in a report out this week that the stimulus "did not meet the public's inflated expectations for game-changing economic improvements" and that the nation's highway system is still in serious trouble.

On Wednesday’s Fox and Friends, they discussed this study on the air:

KEVIN HASSETT, economist, American Enterprise Institute:  I think that one of the big stories is that government workers are destructive. And so if a government worker loses his job, it's good for the economy. I think if you look at the study, it looked at variation across states in stimulus spending and then found that the places that got less stimulus spending are doing a lot better now. And so I think that we wasted a heck of a lot of money.

I remember back then when they were creating the stimulus, thinking gees, we'd be better off if we let Charlie Sheen develop an economic stimulus. And now we're seeing the truth -- the proof is in the pudding. And in fact they didn't create many jobs.

GRETCHEN CARLSON: Wait, clarify what you mean about a government job that's destructive.

HASSETT: Well, basically, imagine if you're trying to have a new addition in your house then you've got to get the permit guys to agree to do it, and the more permit guys there are, the harder it is to do. And so it seems like when a government worker loses his job, it ends up being good for the private sector and each government job that was destroyed because we didn't send stimulus money to that state. They actually created two private sector jobs.

Fox went into some deeper study details:

CARLSON: Another interesting stat is that the study looked at 46 of 50 states and what happened. So in other words, the states mostly Democratic by the way that got this stimulus money, then they are the ones who did not have the higher growth in private jobs.

HASSETT: Yes, that's right. In fact, this is one of the most partisan bills ever. In a study we did at AEI recently we found that the safe Democratic districts got almost twice as much stimulus money as Republican districts and so the Democrats were really partisan.

BRIAN KILMEADE: Right.

HASSETT: They thought they were saving their districts and harming Republican districts, but in fact they did the opposite.

we lost some jobs, thanks to bushkazi economics, but...

Submitted by gabbyhayes on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 9:16pm.

We have a net gain of two million jobs, most of them in the past nine months, as bushkazi economics has sung its swan song. That means, even if this study is accurate, a gross gain of three million jobs--one million lost and two million added (three minus one equals two, for those math whizzes in the room). We were losing 750,000 jobs A MONTH in the closing days of the Bushkazi administration. That borders on criminal incompetence. Why aren't you whining about that statistic? Gains are additive. Two million new jobs will generate cashflow creating another two million new jobs in the near term. Let me know when you plan the celebration of that statistic. George W. Bush went through eight years in office without creating a single net new job. Not one. In less than a year, Barak Obama has created two million. Never vote republican, if you want to be healthy, wealthy, and wise. Glad I could help. And I'm serious: when you have the parade for Obama, be sure to let me know. I want to be there with a big "I TOLD YOU SO" t-shirt concession.

How did Reagan and Nixon (yes him, 61% and 49 states in 1972) ever win elections in such landslides?

Who knows what was "screened out" in the 70's and 80's news media...

Can you imagine having to tune in to ABC, CBS, and NBC news each evening to get the "news" of the day?

What puzzles me is why so many Americans...

Submitted by Dave. on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 8:20am.

...(and that includes a suprisingly large number of conservatives) are still operating on the assumption that Obama's "stimulus" scam was actually intended to create jobs.

It wasn't.

What it was was Obama stealing a trillion dollars of our money, right in front of us, in broad daylight, and using it to pay off his cronies and to buy votes with.

Some of us saw that even before the theft took place, but most didn't, and sadly, most still don't see it.

And what is worse still, it appears Obama is gearing up to do it again.

So many Americans pay so little attention. I mean, heck, there's sports to follow ya know! Though I do like sports, I understand fully, that there are important things to pay attention to. Most people do not. They live on soundbites, period, if anything at all. Our nation is burning, and most don't know it and will blow off when you say anything that shows that it is.

This stimulus bill was just another fake move to set the eyes of the country somewhere else, just as every other move this White House pulls off. They went to Camp Lejeune and praised the military , gave a URAH,and then a few days later was thinking about turning the rehab of our military wounded over to some insurance comglomerate. He tells us that we are going to have to pay up to 10 times the current price for electricity, inorder to bring in green energy. All the while he is using the gulf disaster to cripple the oil production of this country, with regulations, deliberate slow downs, and now we have his new pronouncement for oil production.Which one is real--try box number 2. The very thought of the so-called transparency in Obamas government, and that is the way he thinks it really is-His Government,is a joke. These people are beginning to make Tricky Dicky look like a beginner. All I have seen is trickery, and hurry-ups to make it look like he supports the American way, we keep getting PC and nicey nice statements about inexperience--The people behind him, the people who tell him what to do, are old hats, and know very well what they are doing- they are trying to scam this country into another term for perhaps the most lack luster President since Carter, and OBAMA is the true ring leader. It is his wishes that they carry out, he is not a puppet, he is a true idealogue who is personnaly convinced that he is near divine, and that the world should bow each time he enters and exits a building. When we hear the anointed one, a smart man should shudder. S.R.Manningson

A**hole-in-Chief

Submitted by LarryG on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 1:42am.

Barrack Obama is no fool. He is not incompetent. To the contrary, he is brilliant. He knows exactly what he's doing. He is purposely overwhelming the U.S. economy to create systemic failure, economic crisis and social chaos -- thereby destroying capitalism and our country from within.
Barack Obama is my college classmate ( Columbia University , class of '83). As Glenn Beck correctly predicted from day one, Obama is following the plan of Cloward and Piven, two professors at Columbia University . They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system with government spending and entitlement demands. Add up the clues below. Taken individually they're alarming. Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority that desperately needs government for survival ... and can be counted on to always vote for bigger government. Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.

-- Universal health care. The health care bill had very little to do with health care. Â It had everything to do with unionizing millions of hospital and health care workers, as well as adding 15,000 to 20,000 new IRS agents (who will join government employee unions). Obama doesn't care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans will add trillions to the national debt. What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government. Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill in the middle of a depression?

-- Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama's biggest contributors. Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kickback hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power. The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars, bigger homes and businesses helps Obama "spread the wealth around."
-- Make Puerto Rico a state. Why? Who's asking for a 51st state? Who's asking for millions of new welfare recipients and government entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. But this has been Obama's plan all along. His goal is to add two new Democrat senators, five Democrat congressman and a million loyal Democratic voters who are dependent on big government.

-- Legalize 12 million illegal immigrants. Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free health care alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America . But it adds 12 million reliable new Democrat voters who can be counted on to support big government. Add another few trillion dollars in welfare, aid to dependent children, food stamps, free medical, education, tax credits for the poor, and eventually Social Security.

-- Stimulus and bailouts. Where did all that money go? It went to Democrat contributors, organizations (ACORN), and unions -- including billions of dollars to save or create jobs of government employees across the country. It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could keep paying union dues. It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out (after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions). A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues). Al l those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America . The country goes broke, future generations face a bleak future, but Obama, the Democrat Party, government, and the unions grow more powerful. The ends justify the means.

-- Raise taxes on small business owners, high-income earners, and job creators. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers, redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama). Reagan wanted to dramatically cut taxes in order to starve the government. Obama wants to dramatically raise taxes to starve his political opposition.

With the acts outlined above, Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the system.

Add it up and you've got the perfect Marxist scheme -- all devised by my Columbia University college classmate Barack Obama using the Cloward and Piven Plan.
There are people that will simply read and delete this... maybe not read it at all.
There are others that are so wrapped up with Obama-mania that they will never accept any criticism of him.
There are those that say, 'I'm too old to worry about this crap... it's not going to affect me'!
Finally, there are professional blood-suckers that live off everyone else's sweat -- they want more 'Free Stuff'. And we all know where they stand.
If you care about your future, or maybe your children or grandchildren's future, do something now.
Vote the bums out of office this November. And, make Obama a one-term president.

Please pass this on.
