CNN's Piers Morgan Battles with Ted Nugent on Guns, Says Second Amendment Almost Killed Gabby Giffords

CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight has been such a parade of celebrity interviews it’s almost made Larry King Live look like a hard-news show. But on Wednesday night, Morgan interviewed Ted Nugent and pounded him repeatedly and personally, especially insulting him as a “draft dodger.” He also suggested he was homophobic and not compassionate toward the poor.

Morgan naturally picked a big fight on the Second Amendment, which he declared “the reality is you end up with what happened to Gabby Giffords in Tucson.” Morgan insisted to Nugent, “Eighty people a day die in America from gunshots.” Nugent replied, “Kiss my ass...You are playing the idiot’s advocate.” The gun talk began when Morgan ran video of Nugent suggesting Obama should suck on his machine gun:

MORGAN: For a man who is a -- who is a patriot, who purports to love his country, that was quite shocking disrespect to your president.

NUGENT: Well, let me put it in official CNN Piers Morgan interview terms, shall I?...My limey friend...Anybody that wants to disarm me can drop dead. Anybody that wants to make me unarmed and helpless, people that want to literally create the proven places where more innocents are killed called gun-free zones, we're going to beat you. We're going to vote you out of office or suck on my machine gun. You can take it whichever you --

MORGAN: Much as I'd love to suck on your machine gun, the whole point -- the whole point of your defense is that a lot of people do drop dead precisely because you are armed to the teeth. And you'd like everybody else to be.

NUGENT: Not true at all. Not true at all.

MORGAN: Eighty people --

NUGENT: Piers, write this down --

MORGAN: You write this down. Eighty people a day die in America from gunshots.

NUGENT: And 75 of them to 78 of them -- statistics by the Uniform Crime Report by the FBI and the U.N. study on violent crime -- 78 of those 80 are let out of their cages by corrupt judges and prosecutors who know the recidivism is out of control, know that they'll commit the crimes again, and they let them walk through plea bargaining, early release, and programs.

Kiss my ass. Where you have the most armed citizens in America, you have the lowest violent crime rate. Where you have the worst gun control, you have the highest crime rate.

Piers, choose one. Do you want a lot of crime? We have it. Gun-free zones. You want less crime? We have that. More people with concealed weapons permit. Why do you guys resist that statistic?

MORGAN: Well, don't say you guys.

NUGENT: You guys. Well, unless you're playing the devil's advocate.

MORGAN: I can play any advocate I like. It's my show.

NUGENT: You're doing a good job. You're playing the idiot's advocate here. More guns equals less crime. Period.

MORGAN: Unless I'm wrong -- and I don't want to kiss your ass --

NUGENT: And I'll be sure to let you know.

MORGAN: -- at this point, if you don't mind. Unless I'm wrong with your argument -- well, you're basically saying that, you know, 90 percent of the gun crime comes from people that --

NUGENT: It's 96 percent but go ahead.

MORGAN: But they still have to get access to firearms. If you had your way, there would be 10 times as many firearms, right?

NUGENT: Not true at all.

MORGAN: You want everyone in America to own a gun?

NUGENT: Not at all. I've never said that. And I got to tell you --

MORGAN: What is your position?

NUGENT: -- and I hope you don't edit this out. Whenever I've done interviews with guys that are inclined to be anti-gun, they always go, well, Nugent, you want everyone to have a machine gun. Nugent wants all the deer dead.

MORGAN: What does Nugent want?

NUGENT: Not even close.

MORGAN: What do you want?

NUGENT: What I want is the Second Amendment. We the people, free individuals to have the right to keep and bear arms for self- defense. Find fault with that.

MORGAN: Well, I could find lots of fault with it.

NUGENT: Name one.

MORGAN: Well, the reality is you end up with what happened to Gabby Giffords in Tucson.

NUGENT: That guy had gone through the cracks of the mental health system. That guy had --

MORGAN: How could he be allowed to get a gun?

NUGENT: Because he fell through the cracks, and he didn't -- he didn't qualify to get a gun.

MORGAN: He fell through the cracks.

NUGENT: The cracks of the mental health system. Everybody knew -- all his friends, his family was afraid of this guy, but they didn't report it. Nobody -- nobody reacted to it.

MORGAN: When you see a guy like that get open access to firearms because the Constitution that you subscribe -- adhere to so much --

NUGENT: How would you fix that?

MORGAN: Well, I would certainly make it a lot harder for people like him to ever get near a firearm. And that's my argument with the gun lobbying is that it's always very, very aggressive. And even as you've just exploded with me, it's always a violent debate. And it's always like, [Yelling] "I want the right to shoot anyone that comes near me who threatens me!"

It's always about that. This guy was unstable but was able to go and get a firearm because they are freely available in this country. And that's where I have a problem with it.

NUGENT: Were you born in England?

MORGAN: I was born in England.

NUGENT: Are you familiar with Ireland?

MORGAN: I am.

NUGENT: Is Molotov cocktails and C4 explosives -- those legal in Belfast?

MORGAN: They're terrorists.

NUGENT: Are those -- is that -- are those items legal in Belfast?

MORGAN: Well, I don't live in Belfast.

NUGENT: Well, then I'll go ahead and educate you. They're banned in Belfast. They're forbidden in Belfast. Do you think anybody had a hard time getting them? If you want something -- how about in New York City it would take me 15 minutes for me to get a submachine gun in New York City from some paroled crack dealer.

MORGAN: Let me spin the argument. Would you agree drugs then to be freely available?

NUGENT: Not at all.

MORGAN: What's the difference in the argument?

NUGENT: Because drugs are 100 percent about reducing your level of responsibility, getting high, disconnecting, and I'm a cop. I've been a cop for 35 years. I conduct federal raids with the heroes of law enforcement in Texas. In every instance where there is violence, somebody's high on something, but they're not always in possession of a firearm. They do it with Buicks and bricks and fire and chainsaws and --

MORGAN: The guy who shot Gabby Giffords wasn't high. That wasn't a factor.

NUGENT: No, but he was mentally deranged.

MORGAN: My point about the threat of your argument is you're saying -- there's a difference, isn't there, between -- you're saying guns should be made freely available, right?

NUGENT: No, no, there should be restrictions.

MORGAN: Because if you -- let me ask -- let me put something to you. Do you think this is wrong, tell me. They should be made available with some restrictions, but not many, from the gun lobby arguments I've read --

NUGENT: Which --

MORGAN: -- and then actually the reason is if you made them illegal, they would all be freely available anyway. But with drugs, you say do not make them freely available, make them illegal. Even though you know and I know that drives them underground and probably more people get --

NUGENT: Piers, Piers, I don't know why you guys either don't study the information or you just resist it. I think you're resisting it. In America, where you have more citizens with guns on their person, you have a dramatic reduction in violent crime.

In those areas called gun-free zones, you have a outrageous increase in the loss of innocent lives. That's the choice. Which one would you make? And in America, legally owned guns are used millions of times a year to save innocent lives. You certainly don't believe in calling 911 to stop evil in your home, do you?

In case you were interested in the non-gun arguments, here’s a bit of the welfare argument:

MORGAN: My issue about you and the welfare thing is it showed -- to me it showed no sense of compassion for people who have genuine problems. Who genuinely need it.

NUGENT: Well, you see --

MORGAN: Your judgment, if you don't mind me saying, is all encompassing. All sweeping. You think they're all on the fiddle. [On the fiddle???]

NUGENT: No, I don't.

MORGAN: They're all --

NUGENT: No, I don't. But I don't think, I know, and the statistics support -- once again my sharing with you the statistics, that the abuse, the corruption in that system, is not about helping someone who through no fault of their own fell on hard times, but widespread abuse.

Here’s a bit of the draft-dodger talk:

MORGAN: Well, you're very -- you're very, very pro the troops. I get that. But you yourself, I mean, you dodged the draft.

NUGENT: No. Now, see, I'm glad we're here on the Piers Morgan show to set that straight for the 10 million --

(CROSSTALK)

MORGAN: Set the record straight.

NUGENT: No, did I not dodge the draft. I was 17, and I was a clueless idiot, which most 17s qualify. I bet you were --

(CROSSTALK)

MORGAN: I was quite suave.

NUGENT: Being that as it may, no, I was enrolled in Oakland Community College. And I had a one-wide deferment. Did I register -- I registered. Did I volunteer? No. Should I have? Yes.

MORGAN: Do you regret that?

NUGENT: You know, I do regret it on one level. On the most important, fundamental level, is that I have a duty to earn this experiments in we the people self-government. And I've spent my time and I've intentionally put myself in harm's way going over to Iraq and Afghanistan, right into hell zones of unnamed trenches in Afghanistan danger zones, I do --

MORGAN: Is part of that a guilt thing on your part?

NUGENT: No, not a guilt thing. It was just the right thing to do. At some point, you know, let's pretend I was a heroin addict when I was 17. Would you bring that up if I'd been clean and sober for 50 years?

MORGAN: Probably, yes.

NUGENT: You're such a bastard. (LAUGHTER)

Finally, the “homophobia” segment:

MORGAN: Kobe Bryant was fined 100,000 dollars for using a gay slur during a Lakers' game. And Ted, you wrote a piece after and I'm going to read what you said here. You said that homosexuals are the most protected class of people in America. And you said, and I quote, "The NBA should hold homosexual night during halftime and homosexuals could come down on the court, hold hands, prance around the court to music by The Village People." You also said that homosexuality was morally wrong.

NUGENT: Do you have a problem with that?

(CROSS TALK)

NUGENT: That's like Clapton trap. No, let's put it this way. If you're gay, have a nice day. I could give a rat's ass. I don't --

MORGAN: Are you homophobic?

NUGENT: Not at all, no.

MORGAN: Would you be happy if one of your --

NUGENT: I'm heterophiliac.

MORGAN: What's a heterophiliac?

NUGENT: It means I'm hopelessly addicted to women -- woman.

MORGAN: Right. If one of your children came up and say, Dad, I'm gay. How would you react to that?

NUGENT: I'd say, get the gun, let's go kill a deer. Inconsequential.

MORGAN: You wouldn't mind morally?

NUGENT: Not at all. I am repulsed at the concept of man-on-man sex. I think it's against nature. I think it's strange as hell. But if that's what you are, I love you.

MORGAN: But do you believe it's morally wrong? You have suggested that before.

NUGENT: You know, I'm not going to judge another's morals.

MORGAN: You judge people all the time.

NUGENT: Yes, sometimes you have to. I have to judge my bass player, and that's why I've got the greatest bass player in the world. No. I say live and let live. Like I said, gay? Go nuts. Martians? Cool. I really don't care.

Jon, here's a link to Nugent's interview. This actually made my day. I wish Republicans in DC had half the spine that Nugnet does. This interview should be a guideline for dealing with the left. Nugent shot down Piers with facts and stated his position so clearly that even a liberal could unde stand it.

By the way, did anyone else catch Pier's line about the "Constitution that he subscribes to?" What in the world does that mean. Our Constitution is not the latest issue of Cosmo, it's the document that made us the greatest nation on earth and allows us to enjoy the freedoms that we have-even though Obama is trying to "correct" that. Goodness liberals can be so infuriating!

Do you know what the approval rating was of the president before Obama? 34%. So don't blame Obama, he inherited terrible poll numbers!

Submitted by buddyc on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 3:57pm.

WHY does Ted deal with retards like Morgan? What he should say is, "Why do you want to deprive me of my constitutional right? The law is the law and says I have a right to keep and bear arms. Like it or not it is the law. If you don't like the law you should amend the constitution. Do you have the vote?"

If you hadn't noticed all those who are most outspoken towards Obama are now getting attacked by the media. Trump, Nugent, Cheney, and even some other liberals who have come out to attack him are being savaged by the liberal media in the last few weeks. Think there is some coordinated plan there???

What Morgan failed to realize going into this thing -- or, as Ted said, maybe he resisted it -- is that Nugent has defended his position publicly probably more times than he's played "Wango Tango" live, and that's a lot. I've heard very few who can articulate what freedom should be and express love for this country as well as Nugent.

Ted Nugent is awesome!

Submitted by Order270 on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 3:59pm.

Yeah, killing is against the law, murder is against the law, the mentally unstable owning a gun is against the law, having a gun at a political rally is against the law, shooting a congressperson in the head is against the law.

So the flaw to the whole thing is one more law. THAT is what will keep this from ever happening again. So despite ALL the laws we have, a criminal is going to stop before doing any of this and say, "Oh, wait, owning a gun is against the law--I better not do this." Or just because guns are made illegal, suddenly, criminals would not be able to get one. That only happens in one place--Fantasy Land.

Guns and drugs

Submitted by Zepppo on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 4:14pm.

Maybe Piers missed the point in his own argument. Drugs ARE ILLEGAL yet millions of criminals get them everyday yet somehow he believes that if you make guns illegal, criminals will no longer be able to get them.
This goes along with the liberal argument that since drug addicts are still able to get drugs, we should make them legal. We already lost the drug war. Should the same argument be used to legalize murder.
Same rule applies to abortion. Liberals say abortions should be legal or they will be done in back alleys. Should we make murder legal so they don't have to be done in back alleys.
Somehow Liberals think that if we make illegal what they want legal, it will be done anyway but if we make illegal what they want illegal, then it will never happen again. I guess this works if you assume all criminals are liberals.

Lots of well thought out

Submitted by sportzcenterjudd on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 6:22pm.

Lots of well thought out arguments. Attacking a person's country of birth is a nice way to shift the attention to things that don't matter. Applying abortion or healthcare or whatever other social issue is just talking in circles and complicating each individual issue by adding more complications to it.

Personally I don't define myself by the size of my gun, but whatever floats your boat I guess. The gun debate can be explained by how each side defines the 2nd amendment, as well their stance on big government. It is the same old boring story....Liberal-Big Gov where everybody loves each other and gets free healthcare vs Small Conservative Gov where everybody has a shotgun in the wild west ("The amERica argument...cue dip spit). Both sides are as full of shit as the other, but in this case I can't buy into Ted's "Kiss my ass argument" because frankly it is just ignorant. Instead of just talking about whether or not guns are necessary and the root causes of the issue, Teddy boy just started yelling, basically saying that he will absolutely not give any ground and/or compromise (The republican way). This is a perfect representation of the entire political system because every single social issue has followed the exact same pattern. Liberals try to do something, republicans start yelling things like "this is amERica" and "kiss my ass."

To me, modern american society doesn't trust itself and is just a little too insecure to even handle the idea of guns getting taken away. But still, are we really wasting time talking about this? Neither side is going to budge, neither side will admit that they do the exact same things/use the exact same strategies to manipulate voters. They just point out each other's flaws. To me, the current system is at a standstill and nothing is ever going to get done because certain people make too much money off the status quo. All social reform is simply the way that the rich temporarily appease the lower class majority. They change parts of society little by little so people don't get mad to the point of doing something about it (a situation where guns would be very necessary).

So, my point is to looks at the entire political system as a whole and point out the simple fact that it isn't working like it is supposed to anymore. Not that it doesn't have its strong points, but the current political power paradigm is clearly not going to be allowed to continue as is. Instead of spinning our wheels talking about one part of the system, why not address the flaws and strengths of the entire system (without classifying it as conservative or liberal) by moving forward/adapting to current social needs?

The judiciary in this country is out of controll. I'm sure it was never intended for Judges to "legislate from the bench". All rules of constitutionality should only come fromt he Supreme Court and not from some Racine County Circuit Court Judge.

Also, the Congress has not only abdicated its power but it's responsibility. No political appointee department head or cabinet member [czar] (Sebelius, Lisa Jackson, Sunstein), or other beaurocrat "to be named at a later date" should be allowed to make policy (in effect, "law") affecting the business, individuals, or States. That is Congress's job.

Did you miss the part?

Submitted by bikeromany on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 7:23pm.

Did you miss the part (over and over again) where Nugent pointed out where gun ownership is high, crime is lower?

Specifically, look at the crime rates in the Must Carry States. In particular, Florida was interesting when they passed must carry back when Janet Reno was the state's Attorney General. Violent crimed dropped because nobody was sure who was armed. The criminals started bumping rental cars, because they had a better chance of being from out of state, and as such, unarmed targets. When German tourists got killed, Reno wanted to do away with must carry so poor tourists didn't get killed. Like you, she missed the point - the armed populous was safer.

Look at Australia, where they went the other way, to Nugent's "gun free zones". There, violent crime is shooting up, and the politicians and liberals can't understand it. "But we made it safe!" they claim.

Don't say Nugent just said Kiss my Ass. Drop your own paradigms and listen to what he was saying. Why is it liberals always want everyone else to have an open mind, when they've already shut theirs?

I predict, rather than a paucity, that more in depth and pointed purposeful prose and phrases from our purveyor of how to pick up peace and prosperity without perpetually pandering to polytheism, --- Mr. placid waters run deep - philosophy is not a pressing burden but rather a primordial release from non-polymorphic parameters -, and also predictions & perdurable proclamations probably predicated upon avoidance of perpetual political policies,  will posted by our newest prognosticator, the sportster juddman, to prevent the possibility of a preponderant form of punishment being piled on conservatives in perdition.

What a guy!

And yeah, I fudged on the "still waters run deep" cuz I was on a roll.  :o)

Ditto on reaction

Submitted by jon_torlin on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 8:43pm.

I had a similar reaction after reading the transcript, but really didn't want to comment on that part when I did comment on the entire exchange.

I suspect Piers might have tossed that in there to try to throw Ted for a loop and it didn't work.

Either way, Piers is as lame as you can get and Ted just smacked him about like a ragdoll.  Didn't take much effort.  We need more public figures like that.

The British Are Subjects

Submitted by bikeromany on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 7:11pm.

The British are Subjects of the British Empire. They have an Aristocracy to whom they kowtow. Someone to tell them how to act and what they need. Gun control is basically people control. America had no gun control until the fear that freed slaves might be armed made laws necessary, to control the freed slaves.

In America we're citizens, not subjects. We self determine, and we have rights. One of the downside of rights is that there will be abuse, whether it's someone insulting someone else with free speech, or a gun owner misusing his gun. All freedoms come with risk, but removing the freedom doesn't do away with the risk. It just makes the risk bigger. As six million unarmed German Jews could testify too. Or an equally vast number of Ukranians under Stalin. And even some Tibetans.

Of course when they remove all the freedoms, we'll be slaves - then the gun control will make sense.

According to the "suave and sophisticated" Piers Morgan

Submitted by ProudAmerican58 on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 8:03pm.

if Ted Nugent believes in a strong 2nd Amendment, it means he wants the entire US "armed to the teeth;"

if he is angry over the fact the data reflects that the Welfare system is being (ab)used more by the clueless than the helpless, it means he lacks "compassion."

if he acknowledges his lack of maturity in having chosen not to serve in Vietnam, it's "the greatest regret of his life" and his present support of the troops is being done not out of a morally held sense of gratifude but out of a sense of "guilt:"

and if he believes it was wrong to have fined Koby Bryant for having used a gay slur in the heat of the moment, he's "a homophobe."

I thought liberals were supposed to "marinade in the complex nuance of the issues." What a limey bimbo!

That's just my opinion; I could be wrong. -- Dennis Miller

Ted Nugent for president!

Submitted by Phryj1 on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 8:03pm.

Now THAT is what we need. A guy who can handle lefty sycophant interviewers.

And I like to point out that it's our complete joke of a mental health system that nearly killed Giffords, NOT the Second Amendment. Same deal with the Virginia Tech massacre, Columbine, and any number of other incidents where some psycho walked into a school, mall, or other public place and started gunning people down. In all these incidents, there were unmistakable signs of mental illness in the would-be gunman beforehand. If we had a better mental health system, we'd be able to prevent these guys from getting a hold of guns in the first place.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

I do not won a gun but I can appreciate the appeal of self-defense. How many people are saved everyday because they own a firearm? That is the statistics no one mentions.

Cain/Nugent in 2012!

Submitted by Dave. on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 9:49pm.

As for comrade Morgan, he can return to the UK, where he will soon witness the takeover of his country by the 7th Century barbarian horde.

The Brits can't stop it now, as they were foolish enough to allow their government to take their guns way.

Now they are sitting ducks.

Second Amendment

Submitted by Mike009 on Fri, 05/20/2011 - 6:07pm.

Fortunately we do not have a caffeteria style bill of rights where people get to pick and chose which amendments to follow and which ones to ignore.

The Second Amendment isn't what almost killed Gabby Giffords. Jared Loughner almost killed Gabby Giffords. The Sherriff's dept was well aware of Loughner's history of making threats and stalking Giffords. How about blaming the Sherriff?

Ted should have asked this pussy limey (Aussies call them pomeys for their little pink cheeks) what happened to the crime rates in Britain and Australia when theyn instituted gun control. Went through the roof!! I don't known why these dumb-ass brits are given a soapbox to spout their stupidities off of. They need to look at their own history and present-day social conditions before they start their childish blabberings. Let them eat their jellied eels and be damned!
