PBS Host Tavis Smiley Bizarrely Claims 'You Lie' Comment to Obama Our 'Greatest Moment of Incivility'

By Tim Graham | January 13, 2011 | 16:43

Tim Graham's picture

On his PBS talk show on Tuesday, Tavis Smiley brought on liberal Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to discuss the Tucson shooting, but he was still reliving the much tinier, nonviolent nightmare of Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) yelling "You lie!" at President Obama during a September 2009 address to Congress to sell ObamaCare. He suggested it was the greatest moment of incivility in the history of the House of Representatives.

This would seem to be skipping incidents like Rep. Preston Brooks of South Carolina savagely beating Sen. Charles Sumner with his cane over slavery in 1856. The History Channel says "Brooks became an instant hero in the South, and supporters sent him many replacement canes." (Or there's the Puerto Rican terrorists shooting up the place and wounding five House members in 1956...) But Smiley was adamant:

Clearly, no one was shot, nobody lost his or her life in this process, but it's hard to find a greater moment of incivility in the history of the House than when your colleague on the other side of the aisle, Mr. Wilson, stood up in the president's speech, President Obama's speech, and said, "You lie" for the nation and the world to hear. If ever there were a moment of incivility in our politics, it was that moment.

The president accepted his apology rather quickly, and for whatever reasons, and I'm not casting aspersion, I'm just calling the facts as they are, the president at that moment, is my point, chose not to use that as a teachable moment to talk to us about incivility. We know now he's on his way to Arizona to speak tomorrow night and to console the victims and their families, et cetera. So should the president now take this opportunity -- he hasn't said anything as yet -- about civility? Should he talk about that now?

Smiley's support for Obama overlooked the fact that Obama called his opponents a liar in his own speech that night: "Some of people’s concerns have grown out of bogus claims spread by those whose only agenda is to kill reform at any cost. The best example is the claim...that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens. Such a charge would be laughable if it weren’t so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple." Apparently, it's still "civility" if you call your opponents liars from the podium, just not from the peanut gallery. But of course, the congresswoman agreed:

WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: Yes, in short. We have had - without singling individuals out, but we have had presidents in the recent past [Bush, anyone?] miss opportunities to bring the nation together and to -- who have not taken advantage of the turning point that an incident like this is.

We really are, Tavis, at a turning point right now. This is an opportunity that Gabby Giffords, as well as I know her, and

as strongly as I know she feels about the importance of moderation and civility and measuring our words carefully and not whipping people up into a frenzy, all the while advocating our views vigorously, I know Gabby will want the president and will want us to use this opportunity to bring the nation together and to, again, be the example of the kind of democracy that the Founding Fathers envisioned, and take the violent language, the violent symbolism and the violent rhetoric out of our discourse.

Then Smiley shifted into mocking gun rights and its backers in Arizona:

SMILEY: Speaking of Founding Fathers, they gave us the right to bear arms, and Arizonans love the right to bear their arms. The numbers are out and everybody's talking about it. The Monday following this shooting, gun sales in Arizona, up 60 -- six-zero -- percent from a year ago. Is that the answer?

WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: I personally don't think arming ourselves is the answer. Again, as Gabby's friend, she is a gun owner, she supports the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms, but this is certainly not -- the response to this should not be arming ourselves to the teeth. The response to this should be for us to find a way to make our democracy better, to figure out how to disagree without turning our opponents into the enemy.

This was just a day before the Congresswoman went on CBS Evening News on Wednedsay night and talked about her daughter asking if Mommy was going to get shot by border-control fanatics:

After my daughter heard that, you know, Gabby had been shot, the first thing she asked me was, you know, 'Mommy, are you going to get shot? Does that mean you're going to get shot?' And then I, you know, did my best to reassure her, tell her, 'No, you know, Mommy takes precautions. You've been to my meetings. You know we have, we take steps to make sure that we're all safe.' But then the next thing she said to me was – and this is where you don't realize how closely they're watching – 'But Mommy, Florida's going to pass an immigration law like Arizona and then people are going to be mad at you.' You know, they're paying attention. The civil discourse is very important because it's not just – it's not just adults that – that this permeates. It's our children.

Let's start w/ Tavis, himself. Tavis, the intolerant bigot.

Ayaan Hirsi's story is quite compelling.. in case you haven't run across this brave woman.

(video clip) PBS's Tavis Smiley promoting intolerance and touting lies

Author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, talking about radical Muslims:

“Somehow, the idea got into their minds that to kill other people is a great thing to do and that they would be rewarded in the hereafter.”

Host Tavis Smiley: “But Christians do that every single day in this country.”

Ali: “Do they blow people up every day?”

Smiley: “Yes. Oh, Christians, every day, people walk into post offices, they walk into schools, that’s what Columbine is — I could do this all day long....There are folk in the Tea Party, for example, every day who are being recently arrested for making threats against elected officials, for calling people ‘nigger’ as they walk into Capitol Hill, for spitting on people. That’s within the political — that’s within the body politic of this country.”

A few  points -- "every single day?"  - "in this county?" - What did Columbine have to do with Christians? Two whacked out kids.  Just when was the last time that there was story about a Christian, in this country, killing someone, or blowing someone up (in this country) in the name of Christianity?

Just one example Tavis - not to mention 365 a year?

Anyone see a Christian walk into a Mosque wearing a suicide vest and blowing up innocent civilians? Anywhere? In this country?

I think that it is a given now, that the event he refers to on the Capitol Hill steps did not occur - a purely fabricated story - unfortunately w/legs, because of hate mongering folks like Tavis.

Tavis Smiley meets the definition of an intolerant bigot.

Smelley is only pissed off because racist liberals have an aversion to the truth, it makes them violently ill, with vomiting involved.

My favorite actual lie on the House floor, was the Ass Clown himself lying directly to the real American people ( while the justices were forced to sit in silence right in front of this coward ) about the Supreme Court of the United States of America concerning the Citizens United Ruling allowing foreign corporations and governments to decide our elections.

An especially poinient moment in the Ass Clown's career, considering the fact he had personally sold half of our childrens and all of our grandchildrens futures to the Chinese up to that point and was in the process of brokering a back room deal with the democrats to kill off most of the old people in this country before they would ever see a dime of Medicaire they've paid into for the past 40 years.

the distinction between Obama's labeling a claim regarding a provision in pending legislation a "lie" and Wilson's stunningly boorish behavior during the middle of a nationally televised Presidential address to Congress is so gaping that even the hint of an equivalency boggles the mind.  No, it is not the most uncivil moment in the history of the House--personally I'd rank it around #8--but the GOP leadership leaned heavily on Wilson to issue an apology for good reason:  They knew he had acted like a petulant, mannerless child.

I've always considered the "You lie" outburst to be the equivalent of shouting "Enough!" and not so much a deliberate intent to be rude or petulant. Everyone has various levels of patience and most people will eventually just get fed up with lies, even more so when they are blatant or go unchallenged. I know I, myself, find it aggravating as hell watching news-anchor after news-anchor knowingly shovel misinformation out to the public. There's only so much BS people are willing to tolerate.

I think a lot of the recent focus on "heated rhetoric" leaves out  the anger people feel when they know they are being lied to. That aspect is probably left out on purpose, otherwise the offending MSM and others would have to admit guilt.

Indeed - and I think we all feel that way. It made me think - what if someone like Sarah Palin, in regards to the Republican position on health reform - perhaps a plan to cut costs - said something like this:

We're going to have to, if you're very old, we're not going to give you all that technology and all those drugs for the last couple of years of your life to keep you maybe going for another couple of months. It's too expensive...so we're going to let you die.

Isn't it obvious that by tomorrow morning, after a busy night by the other side - the MSM - that most everyone in America would be talking about it - and her insensitive and damning remarks?

http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978463

9/26/07 Robert Reich – at UC Berkeley

Jer. I have a rather different take on the "death panel," discussion.

The conservative side of the Republican party is opposed to the concept (as if they are fully briefed).

The liberals (Democrats and MSM) support the concept of rationing care for elders, and numerous other health issues (Neo Natal intensive care is on the table, as well); death, being the end result.

The liberals (D's and the MSM) attacked Sarah Palin, et. al., on the use of the term, "death panel," claiming that there is no such discussion at hand.

That is a lie. Yes there is. They smeared the R's for bringing it up. They should ahve said, well, let's define it this way. The media - failed us miserably.

They could have said, "Well what we want is.." and we don't appreciate you calling it, a "death panel." Instead, they lie and deny that there is a want.

I say, this is America - bring it up and let's have the frigging discussion. I'm privy to a few personal views in which modern science and intervention is not only extremely expensive, but is causing untold  of, and unGodly and un-natural pain and suffering beyond what was ever intended on God's green earth.

In the end, it's the national MSM doing it's thing - successfully censuring an open intellectual conversation on an issue of concern to all - and managing to insert horrific vitriol and divisiveness into the public awareness, instead of dialog.

Let the people debate it.

But Bachmann is accumulating a body of work which definitely puts her in the loose cannon category--a view which I am confident is universally shared by Democrats and is mostly rejected by Republicans.

And "blood libel"?  At least one Swiss Company actually uses fetal collagen in its cosmetics.  We aren't that far away.

But none of this rises to the level of "You Lie!", right Tavis?

Mr Smiley should attend the

Mr Smiley should attend the Italian parliment or the UK's House of Lords for one of their "discussions". Democracy is not pretty or polite.

Interesting, I thought it was

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 6:49pm.

Interesting, I thought it was when Obama went on a Jay Leno joe and made fun of the mentally handicapped as "retards".  Or, maybe it was Clinton using the peoples' Oval Office as a place to tap girls that were barely over legal age.  Or wait, maybe it was when Barbara Boxer asked a decorated General during wartime to call her "Senator!"  Oh wait, maybe it was when Obama called the police officers who put their ass on the line everyday to protect the good people from crime "stupid".  Oh wait, maybe it was when Michelle Obama said she was only proud of the USA when her husband came into office.  Or maybe it was Michelle Obama ganging up on an entire group of people with the NAACP and calling them RACISTS simply because they disagreed with her husband.......

Senator Preston Brooks (D) beating Senator Charles Sumner (R)

Submitted by SpaceManSpiff on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 10:11pm.

Senator Preston Brooks (D) beating Senator Charles Sumner (R) nearly to death with a cane, on the floor of the US Senate, would be my example of the greatest moment of incivility.

But then again, pro-slavery Democrat Brooks was beating an anti-slaver Republican, so in the Liberal mind, the event couldn't possibly have happened.  Especially since Brooks accomplice, fellow Democrat Laurence Keitt held the other Senators at bay with a loaded pistol.

Democrats have, and always will be, thugs.

Did Orwell predict the future?  Or are the enemies of freedom following Orwell's example?

Lies

Submitted by 2WarAbnVet on Fri, 01/14/2011 - 12:05pm.

Rep. Joe Wilson was actually quite restrained in yelling, "You lie!" only once during a speech in which Obama lied about two dozen times.
