Katie Couric: 'Maybe We Need a Muslim Version of The Cosby Show'

By Tim Graham | December 30, 2010 | 14:04

Tim Graham's picture

In her @katiecouric Web show analyzing the trends of 2010, the CBS Evening News anchor made a serious speech (in her serious, deep-thinker glasses) against the deep "seething hatred" against Muslims in America:

I also think sort of the chasm, between, or the bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country has been one of the most disturbing stories to surface this year. Of course, a lot of noise was made about the Islamic Center, mosque, down near the World Trade Center, but I think there wasn't enough sort of careful analysis and evaluation of where this bigotry toward 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, and how this seething hatred many people feel for all Muslims, which I think is so misdirected, and so wrong -- and so disappointing.

She really winced on that last word. When comedian Mo Rocca said he went to "really fancy schools" and "I cannot tell you five things about Islam," Couric shot back "Maybe we need a Muslim version of The Cosby Show." She continued:

I know that sounds crazy, I know that sounds crazy. But The Cosby Show did so much to change attitudes about African-Americans in this country, and I think sometimes people are afraid of what they don't understand -- like you, Mo.

Rocca said "I think religion should be taught as an academic subject in public schools." Couric said "I totally agree with you." But left unsaid is this: how well do network news people do in explaining the tenets of Islam or any other world religion? If there's great ignorance of Islam in America, Katie Couric has done nearly nothing to solve it -- and nominating Hollywood to solve the problem with a lovable family comedy isn't really taking responsibility.

No one on the set wondered if Couric was being reckless in taking the idea that many Americans had -- that a mega-mosque two blocks from the hole of Ground Zero was insensitive and should merely be located somewhere farther away -- and wildly extrapolating that with "seething hatred" of "1.5 billion Muslims worldwide."

This is not new for Couric. In a quote that made our Best Notable Quotables of 2010, Couric devoted a "Couric & Co." commentary to denouncing the Islamophobes:

It might be Islamophobia, Obamaphobia, or both, but when loud speakers are blaring ‘Born in the USA’ and signs say ‘No Clubhouse for Terrorists,’ it’s clear we aren’t just talking about a mosque anymore. There is a debate to be had about the sensitivity of building this center so close to Ground Zero. But we can not let fear and rage tear down the towers of our core American values.

Earlier in the show, Couric did talk about other things CBS failed to accomplish on the air:

What about the Nashville floods? Larinda Sue [sp] on Twitter asks if the Nashville floods will make our list, and it made all of us think, as w're preparing for the show...what other stories were underreported? The Nashville floods were really underreported. Anything else come to mind that we should have been paying attention to that we didn't? I would say we're probably not paying enough attention to Iraq. Does anyone else agree with that?

Martin agreed and said "We're in danger in the media, but also as a people, of becoming inured to war, sort of a permanent war," and "because there's no draft, a lot of us don't have skin in the game, as they say."

Tune in to CBS tonight for a special episode of The Muslim Cosby Family when the Cosbys deal with their neighbors misunderstanding why the pretty 15-year old daughter was killed by her brothers and father, all for talking to a Jewish boy in school....

Seething hatred? Really?

Submitted by StarAZ on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 2:12pm.

My neighbor is a Muslim woman with two sons. She is nice, although she keeps to herself--maybe she is afraid of my horrible animosity and hatred or maybe she is busy. Hatred takes energy...I would ask Katie what she reads--but I would rather know what she is smoking. This is so whipped up by the media it's ridic.

They are the victims of islam.  Hating muslims, (the ones that don't blow themselves and a bunch of innocents up or talk others in to mass murder), is like hating a cancer patient because they have cancer.

I hate the cancer not the victim of cancer.  Thus...I hate islam, the cult of Death and the pedophile, necrophiliac, desert bandit that created it.

Cosby Show, a "dangerous myth"?

Submitted by Tim Graham on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 2:21pm.

In lauding the Cosby Show's war on deeply racist America in the 1980s, Couric ignores that Cosby commissioned some left-wing academics to take his show apart, which resulted in a book called Enlightened Racism:

Based on an extensive study, funded by Bill Cosby himself, of audience responses to The Cosby Show , this provocative book reinforces criticism that, despite the show's great popularity and positive influences, it promotes the dangerous myth that blacks who don't "make it" have only themselves to blame. The authors, who teach in the department of communications at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, interviewed 52 focus groups, learning that viewers involve themselves deeply with the show and often see it as reality. White viewers can identify with and accept TV's Huxtable family as "nice" blacks; black viewers appreciate the show's lack of racial stereotyping. However, the authors argue, The Cosby Show 's images of the black upper class--like most images broadcast in recent years--hide and distort how most blacks live, thus relieving white viewers of responsibility for such inequalities.

The Cosby Show relieved white viewers of responsiblity

Submitted by ProudAmerican58 on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 2:49pm.

for inequalities?!  This racist tripe could ONLY have come from left-wing academics who  majored in Race-Baiting 101.

This show was created and produced by an extremely talented black actor/comedian who'd already been famous for years.  If  "white" (along w/ black, asian, hispanic, etc.)viewers should feel responsible for anything, it should be for Cosby's enormous success, which some would say is unequal to that of many non-black performers.

Bozell for Cosby

Submitted by Tim Graham on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 3:00pm.

Brent Bozell went after that book and this one:

Author Michael Eric Dyson has gone after him with a full-length book asking "Is Bill Cosby Right?" His subtitle answers the question: "Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?" He claims Cosby represents a snooty "Afristocracy" of black professionals denouncing the "ghettocracy" of single mothers and inner-city gangsters. Dyson complained there's "nothing like a formerly poor black multimillionaire bashing poor blacks to lend credence to the ancient assaults they've endured from the dominant culture."

I wonder if Mr. Dyson has lost his mind. In an interview on his book with the New York Times Magazine, he suggested that "None of us want our children to be murderers or thieves. But Cosby never acknowledges that most poor blacks don't have a choice about these things." Don't have a choice? If this is not the most perfectly pathetic example of excuse-making, I don't know what is.

"  . . . nothing like a formerly poor black multimillionire . . . ."

I'm astonished that Dyson missed that part of his own rant.  Perhaps the reason that Bill Cosby is formerly poor rather than currently poor has to do with the choices he made that led to that end.

Seems to be SORT OF a way to cast negative aspersions (had to look that up) on their perceived enemies. I never noticed it's over-use until about a week ago and now, I have to admit, it's gotten kinda fun to look for it in all the MSM's dialogues.

This bullshit of them ignoring, never reporting the fact that muslim/arab terrorists murder hundreds of people around the world on a weekly basis has to end now.

Their only justification for these brutal murders is that the victims were not the same as the cockroaches that killed them.

Muslim/arab terrorist pussies are an awful lot like our homegrown progressive/socialist America haters here in this country, only our terrorists kill us much more slowly by sucking the life out of us.

Katie: I know that sounds crazy, I know that sounds crazy. But The Cosby Show did so much to change attitudes about African-Americans in this country   Bill Cosby? Whatever happened to Bill Cosby? Oh yeah, he became a pariah, now considered an Uncle Tom by liberals, because he dared to speak the truth about the utterly dysfunctional nature of black culture within the United States.   Perhaps we need a Muslim Bill Cosby, not a Muslim Cosby Show.   BTW, what evidence does Katie have of widespread bigotry against Muslims? Killings? Beatings? Property damage? Workplace discrimination? Deportation? Internments?   No. There is no such thing going on in the US and she knows it. In fact, the US over the past 10 years has been a MODEL of tolerance. How disgraceful that this B*#*@#&TCH would choose to characterize our country in such a manner.   BAD, BAD AMERICA. Canadian TV has a show...

...called "Little Mosque on the Prarie."  It's just about impossible to watch, and I'm really not sure what audience is being targeted, considering Canada is one of the whitest nations on Earth, but FWIW, it has been done-on a govt subsidized TV station.

What we really need is a Christian Cosby Show, so everyone can see that they aren't a bunch of bible-thumping lunatics.  If the goal is to do away with people's stereotypes, seems like a good place to start.

What I find ridiculous is how this twit can be against "homophobes" and "islamophobes" at the same time.  She must know what happens to homosexuals in Islamic countries.  If I were gay, you're darn tootin' I'd be scared of Muslims!  And I don't thing Abdul down the street would take too kindly to being called a homophobe-in fact, he'd have a pretty strong religous "intolerance" for the buggery.

I had to look for this on youtube and sure enough Little Mosque on the Prairie was downloaded. I watched the first 2:49 of the first episode and can already tell you it's playing to a leftist view. The Muslims have to hide their religious services in a church building and lo and behold a white redneck-looking character waltzes in during their services and is surpised to know muslims are in there. So what does he do? He nervously runs out of there and you guessed it, calls terrorist attack hotline.

Notice that they never point out the systematic hatred towards Christians by the media. There's loads of cases of open hostility towards Christians and Christianity in the media, yet the ever watchful liberal thought police always fail to even notice. Maybe someone needs to make a TV show that portrays Christians in a positive light so folks in the media can learn to be more sensitive...

Does Al Jazeera promote homosexuality?

Submitted by Funbowhunter on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 3:48pm.

Let's see, do they promote womens lib?  Do they promote atheism?  Do they promote diversity of thought?  Do they promote abortion?  Do they promote liberalism in general?  Do they promote other religions besides the moon god religion?  Do they promote homosexual marriage?  Do they do in depth stories on men in Turkey having the right to send their wives to serve a sentence for something the man did?

Hey Katie, why don't you do a story about the fact that Muslims shut down large swaths of roads in Paris every Friday so they can pray????

We all know how well that worked out.  Bill Cosby set such a good role-model for people of color that they decided to tell him to "get lost".  Yea, they disowned Cosby because he was against talking in ebonics, smoking reefer, impregnating women and then leaving them, and acting like idiots.

Couric is an IDIOT

Submitted by RealVet on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 4:17pm.

Look at what's happening in places like Dearborn Michigan.  The muslims manipulate city hall, the cops, and local politicians.  You can't interview them, film them, or bring up the subject of Christianity around them.  No separation of Church & State up there... right.

Real Sitcom material - along with Imam-sanctioned kidnappings, bombings, beheadings, female mutilation, and a penchant for imposing their warped religion on all of mankind.

Yeah, it's a broad brush - not broad enough.

Tune in for the next episode of "That Darn Mohammed".

Katie the Brainy

Submitted by michiganruth on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 4:23pm.

there IS a 'Muslim version of the Cosby Show' on CBC, from Canada. it's called "Little Mosque on the Prairie" and it is about Muslim families living in a small town in Canada. it's actually a very good show, and pretty funny.

not surprisingly, the Muslims featured do not include any suicide bombers.

I don't think Americans have any problem with Muslims per se. but we are getting fed up with people like Katie Couric pretending that 99.9% of all terrorists aren't Muslim. speaking for myself I'm also fed up with the LSM telling us about all these terrible acts of "Islamophobia," when in fact the number of hate crimes against Jews is 8 times higher than that of Muslims, and hate crimes against blacks and gays are far higher than either religion.

nobody seems to think we are a nation of anti-Semites, but somehow when it's Islam, suddenly it's a different story. one wacky preacher threatening to burn the Koran proves that we are racists, but the hundreds of American flags burned in the Middle East is not considered a problem.

Islam is, let's remember, the only religion the Left really likes.

Actually Bill Cosby would tell Muslim youth the same thing he tells young people of color. Pull your pants up, shut up and listen to your parents and your teachers, respect others and get an education with the goal of contributing to society in a positive way.

Oh, and take responsibility for your actions and yourself!

Liberals.......

Submitted by almostacowboy on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 4:59pm.

Liberals who support Islam have no sense of irony. I think that's even more obvious since they call themselves "liberals" in light of the following definitions of "liberal":

  • favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

unless you'd like to own a gun or an SUV

  • favoring or permitting freedom of action, esp. with respect to matters of personal belief or expression

unless they don't like that particular belief or action

  • of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies.

as long as it makes us more like Europe

  • free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.

to the extent that they should be given every protection and benefit under the law while remaining exempt from it; does not apply to the TEA Party

  • open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.

but it's ok to be closed-minded and intolerant of those who prefer traditional, conventional values

  • characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.

ESPECIALLY if it's other people's money

'Theo! What' choo doin' with that bomb vest?'

Submitted by Slyrr on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 8:31pm.

Couric's love-fest with murderers continues.  First it was Saddam's Iraq.  She seems now to be vying for Helen Thomas' position as 'self-loathing-america-hating-muslim-loving' opinionator.

One can only imagine what her vision of a 'Muslim Cosby Show' must be.  The 'Huxtaballah' family or something.  Wonder if Couric would be able to deal with the fact that the women would not be allowed to have a jobs in the show - so say good-bye to the strong, smart lawyer Mrs. Huxtaballah.  The women would not be allowed to question the behavior of their husbands.  They would not be allowed to speak.  So all the Huxtabullah women and girls would have to wear burkas and stay silent.

And I guess Cliff Huxtuballah would be instructing his son Theo Huxtubullah on the proper use of suicide bomb vests.

What a heartwarming sight Ms. Couric thinks that must be.  Women subjugated and in their 'proper place' - and boys used as living weapons of mass murder.  What a brave new world it is that liberals desire.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Dear Mzzz. Couric

Submitted by Chuck T on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 11:44am.

It sounds like a fine idea, Katie; but really; let's do it as a reality show, and YOU be the wife. After all, isn't it an "accurate" portrayal you're looking for, instead of all those typical sitcom stereotypes and caricatures?  But remember, when you show up on the set, it's BYOB (bring your own burkha).

She seems to overlook the fact that the "Huxtables" exemplified the best of American black families; that part of black culture which is so often villified and demonized by the Sharptons, the Jacksons, the Farrikhans and the rest of the marxist-leaning, demoncrat-loving majority of blacks. You know; the ones with the love/hate relationship with slavery: using it as an excuse for rage, yet being all too willing to live under the thumb of the government and activist poverty pimps.

'The Cosby Show' wasn't about the typical bottom-feeders, jivers, gang-bangers and welfare amazon tribes that predominate black culture. It recognized blacks as dignified human beings, who were expected to behave dignified through their words, actions and accomplishments.

Oh, and Katie; it wasn't fear and rage that tore down the two very REAL towers; it was Muslims, preying on the innocent and defenseless. That IS their culture and their religion.

Please, Newsbusters; forward this to the perky Ms. Couric. Happy New Year!
