Chris Matthews Attacks Michele Bachmann as 'Zombie-Like' and 'Moonie-Like' for Defending Free Enterprise on BBC

By Tim Graham | November 24, 2010 | 12:08

MSNBC host Chris Matthews cannot understand how conservatives could think that free enterprise is somehow American, and that being anti-free enterprise seems anti-American. On Tuesday night's Hardball, Matthews boosted a new effort by Democrats like David Brock and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend to organize their own independent-expenditure campaign to beat Republicans. Matthews brought on Townsend, who couldn't even win a race for governor of a blue state (Maryland) to explain how she would make the Democrats victorious. Matthews aired BBC video of Rep. Michele Bachmann (clearly borrowed from the Think Progress blog, since you can see the "Pro" of their logo), and attacked her as like a zombie, a Moonie, and a Manchurian Candidate:

MATTHEWS: Look at her eye contact. I asked her when we had her on election night if she's under hypnosis. She doesn't answer the question. She looks straight ahead in that kind of zombie-like manner, like she's waiting for somebody to flash a card, like in "Manchurian Candidate." I mean, I don't know what her state is. She apparently just got blown away running for leadership, so the members of the House on the Republican side --

TOWNSEND: Well, they know.

MATTHEWS: -- know who she is.

TOWNSEND: They know that she`s a problem.

MATTHEWS: But this kind of bizarro behavior, where you come on, Moonie-like, if you will, and just stare into the camera and recite this -- the question was, Do you think the president`s anti-American?

TOWNSEND: No, no, no.

MATTHEWS: Yes or no? No, she talked about, what, equity shares and - -

TOWNSEND: It`s totally strange. And the fact is, she`s wrong about what`s going -- what we need to America. We need a strong health care system, which every other industrialized country has. And if you do polls, as you know, Chris, of the American people, they want health care. In fact, they wished it were stronger.

There was no laugh track as this losing second-generation Kennedy tried to assert in the face of the election returns that the voters want ObamaCare...and even more than that. How is that assertion less "under hypnosis" than Bachmann?

So what did Bachmann say to the BBC that was "bizarro"? She calmly, clearly defended the conservative view, opposing government intervention in the best health care system in the world:

EMILY MAITLIS (outraged): You`ve suggested that President Obama's anti- American. Do you really believe that?

REP. MICHELE BACHMANN (R), MINNESOTA: Well, you know, I`ve been really concerned about the policies that come out of the White House, and I think I share that agreement with people who voted at the ballot box on the first Tuesday of November. They`re rejecting the federal government foray into buying and owning an equity share --

MAITLIS: But that`s a different thing.

BACHMANN: -- in private businesses.

MAITLIS (stressing out): Do you think he`s anti-American? Do you think that the president of America is anti-American?

BACHMANN: Well, the policies that are anti-free enterprise are ones that are not familiar to the people of the United States. And that's why we saw such a strong reaction to the ballot box. In fact, the government takeover of health care is a great example. That`s not what we've done here historically in the United States, and the people don't want to see the federal government control and dictate our health care.

Conservatives nod along to this in agreement, but Chris Matthews viewed this clip and said "She doesn't answer the question." She answered it quite well, but obviously not to the satisfaction of liberals like Matthews and Emily Maitlis. It's a little funny that a British anchor would take such umbrage at someone being called anti-American -- as if that isn't a staple of the British left.

Maybe Chrissie needs to reassess that phrase....

Submitted by NeoKong on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 12:38pm.

" Blown away "

Was he referring to the Democratic majority in the House or the filibuster proof majority the Senate enjoyed....?    Maybe it was Barack Obama's poll ratings which are now below 40%.    Could the "blown away" he was referring to be about his ratings when compared to Fox News ?   I suppose he could have been talking about all the state legislatures that flipped red or all the governor's mansions that flipped GOP.   Could it have been in reference to the seat held by MSNBC good buddy Alan Grayson....?    Now that defines "blown away".

Hardball?

Submitted by rdwing on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 1:00pm.

If you ever watch Chis M. any length of time you notice that he answers his questions before he lets anyone else finish. Another one who likes to listen to himself and thinks what he said is important. Over all it just shows how stupid he is. This is the same one who says the voters are ignorant. He just proves that he would not know a right answer if  jumped up and slapped him in the face. I hope comcast keeps him and the whole cast on because they are the best thing fox and talk radios ratings. Thank you MSNBC.

Exactly

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 4:03pm.

Before the show, he conceives of some Matthews-reality of what's going on in the world, and his questions are aimed at confirming it.  If the answers don't conform, he then provides the answers for the interviewee.  Then later, he can claim it as the responses to his interview.

The night he was questioning Bachmann about whether or not she was "under hypnosis," she had an earplug in one ear and a raucous victory celebration blaring at the other.  I'm not sure she even heard his questions right.   But when she caught on that he (and Olbermann) were ridiculing her, she volleyed back with the leg-thrill reference.

You can bet that no Dem would ever be subjected to that kind of abuse.

Matthews Is A Marxist

Submitted by rammingspeed on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 1:45pm.

Matthews and the rest on his side are incrementally working themselves out of their jobs. The double standard has long been in place, and has become exponentially monstrous. The hysteria, the kindergartner style name calling, has been coming out more and more. But now, for a supposedly intelligent, educated man to declare free enterprise to be wrong - he's literally admitting that he's a Marxist. And that ain't intelligent or educated.

Same Old

Submitted by rammingspeed on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 1:53pm.

Leftists screamed at the top of their lungs that Bush was anti-American. The Right, exemplified by Michelle Bachman, is pointing out the fact that Obama is anti-business, anti-free enterprise. That cannot be.

Which is worse Chris, her staring into the camera, or you with spittle all over your lips and corner of your mouth everytime you speak.  What comes next Chris, actual foaming at the mouth?

Matthews is still pissed that

Submitted by Barack_must_go..... on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 3:46pm.

Matthews is still pissed that Rep. Bachmann forced him to make a bigger douchebag out of himself  during election night coverage than anyone could have ever imagined.

He was sitting around with the other MSNBC/WaPo degenerate/finast asking her inappropriate questions for this particular situation.

She was standing in a capacity crowd filled room of screaming well wishers, plus a band playing in the background. Instead of just congratulating her like any real reporter/human being, he went full out on one of his bullshit ( No-balls ) tangents while the other juvenile delinquents, most notably that racist bastard Gene Robinson from the Washington Post laughed embarrassingly loud and uncontrollably  for the entire free world to hear.....or their 12 regular listeners anyway.

The crew was a bit more professional as they kept the camera pulled in tight on the " leg tingler " Matthews so We the People didn't have to see the milk that was surely shooting out of Robinson and the other A-holes noses.

Barack must be so very proud of this hot mess he has purchased with our money.

This is pathetic. Matthews

Submitted by Chris Norman on Thu, 11/25/2010 - 12:35am.

This is pathetic. Matthews actually believes that his lame attempt to taunt Bachman on election night was his "finest moment" and he insists on revisiting it. He made an absolute fool out of himself that night (well, he does that every moment he's awake), but, in his addled mind, actually thinks he triumphed. He's a small man on a small network, and makes himself smaller everytime he opens his fat mouth.

Let's make the 2012 campaign: "The War on Error"
