WaPo Feminist Says Palin News Was Sexist, But Palin Children ‘Tumbled Down the Stairs’

Washington Post staff writer Liza Mundy (author of a friendly book-length Michelle Obama biography) reviewed two books on women’s history for the Sunday Post, one by New York Times columnist Gail Collins and one by GOP political consultant (and CNN regular) Leslie Sanchez.

Mundy wanted to admit that media coverage of Sarah Palin was sexist, but apparently that could not be acknowledged without suggesting she resembled a comically neglectful mother from Dickens in allowing her daughter to get pregnant:

Sanchez also argues that Palin was unfairly judged on whether she could be vice president and pay sufficient attention to her children. This is a rich point to ponder. I agree that there was a double standard at work in the 2008 campaign. If a woman politician spent as much time away from her young children as Barack Obama spent away from his daughters when he was running for the Senate and later for the White House, she would be widely viewed as a neglectful mother.

But Palin is not the perfect example. She chose to accept the tap for running mate at a time when a daughter was in a personal crisis. And because of the tabloid mess the family saga has devolved into, thanks to that classy Levi Johnston, fairly or unfairly it was sometimes hard not to think of Palin as Mrs. Jellyby in Bleak House, meditating on Africa -- or in Palin's case studying up on world geography -- while her children tumbled down the stairs.

The first question is: would Liza Mundy sound this judgmental about other politicians with troubled children? Al Gore, for example? Does she really know much of anything about Sarah Palin's parenting, or is she just projecting a feminist animus?

For people who haven’t read Bleak House (or the Cliffs Notes version), here’s a quick online summary of the character focused on Africa while her children tumble:

Mrs. Jellyby is convinced that no other undertaking in life is so worthwhile, or would solve so many problems at a stroke. Dickens’s interest is not in the project, however, but rather in Mrs. Jellyby, who is so wedded to her work that she has no time for her several children, with the exception of Caddy, a daughter she has conscripted as her secretary. Ink-spattered Caddy puts in nearly as many hours as her mother in the daily task of answering letters and sending out literature about Borrioboola-Gha.

Caddy, however, has come to hate the very word "Africa" or any word that has the remotest suggestion of causes. For her, causes simply mean the ruin of family life. Mrs. Jellyby’s husband eventually becomes suicidal and, though surviving despair, is last seen in the book with his head resting despondently on a wall.

Mundy's article began by discussing how she was fiercely feminist in grade school, which might explain why she's so quick to suggest Palin's a bad mother:

In the early 1970s, I agitated along with two other girls to join our elementary school's all-boy patrol squad. We prevailed, sort of. The bureaucracy would not go so far as to permit girls to usher schoolchildren across the street, but it did let us hold the front doors open. It still felt like a victory, even on freezing mornings when we stood at our posts watching our breath.

The 1970s were enormously formative years for me personally: In junior high school, my friends and I engaged in debates over "women's lib" with a panel of boys who enjoyed baiting us. We argued our position with such vehemence that one day our social studies teacher kept us after class and asked, indulgently, "What am I going to do with you?"

It's amazing that the Post would be so upfront with its readers (unless they're assuming every Post reader is a liberal) that their political writers have a long-standing animus against traditional values. You can see it in how Mundy classifies progress (Roe vs. Wade) and backlash (Phyllis Schlafly).

fairly or unfairly it was

fairly or unfairly it was sometimes hard not to think of Palin as Mrs. Jellyby in Bleak House,

I know how she feels. Fairly or unfairly, it's sometimes hard not to think of Hillary Clinton as Mrs. Wackford Squeers in Nicholas Nickleby.

She being the harridan wife of Mr Squeers, proprietor of the hideously cruel Dotheboys Hall School for Boys.

2010: Mayans predicted it. Science confirms it. The end of the Democrat's world.

Zero Credibility

NOW (national organization of women) has lost all credibility with me.  They steadied the hands of Hilary, and wiped away her tears, but sat silently as Palin and Prejean were mercilessly attacked.  They have lost MY respect and, if I have my way, all hopes of future support. They proved they are NOT in support of WOMEN...only the liberal women whom they wish to parade and push around.  I won't look to NOW for support of women issues.  They aren't representative of the kind of support I'm looking for in an organization founded to support ALL WOMEN.  They are a disgrace.

What a simple minded pig!!!

These stupid, ignorant , moronic liberal terds......they put out for years all this B.S. about if it feels good do it, the sexual revolution....or was that revulsion?   Then this pig has the unmitigated gall to say Sarah Palin  "allowed" her daughter to become pregnant?    This is another scumbag that should not be allowed to take pen to paper!!!!!!

Don't Get It Twisted

They aren't attacking her because of the pregnancy....but because she didn't abort.  Had she aborted they would have embraced her as the WOMEN'S CAUSE OF THE 21ST CENTURY.  No....she was attacked because of her convictions of the sanctity of life.  Don't get it twisted...we're talking liberals...remember.

Sarah Palin is the bread

Sarah Palin is the bread and circuses provided to the Leftists by their leadership in order to keep their eyes off the failings of Obama, such as:

Record deficits, failing automotive industry bailouts, record bank failures, record unemployment, disasterous foreign policy, failed to get the Olympics, dollar is plummeting, White House caught cooking books with stimulus funds going to nonexistant congressional districts, Obama's poll numbers are plummeting, cap and trade may be in trouble now that climategate is exploding, health care is a 6 trillion dollar lie, etc., etc.

Their Religion

cap and trade may be in trouble now that climategate is exploding

Considering they just announced believing anything they say requires the same leap of faith in their religion that believing God exists requires of Christians....I'd say they just nailed themselves to their own phony crosses.  The total kicker is that after 50+ years of yapping about separation of church and state with regards to public school, nativities on government property (Islam is protected by the PC Police so it IS just about Christianity), etc....NOW THEY FULLY EXPECT THEIR RELIGION TO BE FUNDED BY THE SAME GOVERNMENT THEY PROTESTED FUNDING WHEN IT CAME TO CHRISTIANITY!!!  Now...government money is fully expected to flow on a religious-based project and they don't think opposition can be mounted to stop it!!!

proper left wing treatment ?

I wonder what the left thinks that Palin should have done to her wayward daughter?  Would she have been a better mother if she had publicly humiliated her and disowned her? Thrown her in the street?  Beaten her until she aborted the baby? Forced her to abort or adopt out the baby?  Of course Bristol didn't make the choices that they wanted her to, but is that a crime worthy of ALL this hatred and nastiness?

What exactly is a loving parent supposed to do?  I thought it was to encourage, love and support their child, EVEN if and WHEN they make mistakes?

It's a shame that these people can find fault with parents who love and stand by their children, even when it's not pretty or convenient.

What was she supposed to do?

Utilize the liberal option and not "punish" her daughter with a baby.  You know, take the liberal way out and kill the child's child.

Disgusting liberal thought.

I hope he fails, too.

Why Was Bristol's Pregnancy Such a Big Deal?

Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-CA) had a child out of wedlock and Jeffrey Toobin knocked up Casey Greenfield (Jeff Greenfield's daughter) while married to another woman and there's no coverage.

The media couldn't have an agenda, could it?

Lol...didn't know that

Lol...didn't know that about Toobin, didn't think he had it in him either....sorry, I can't help but laugh here, what happened, in the end anyway...did he marry her, divorce his wife, etc.

Nothing like hypocrisy with the msm and their private lives...which of course remains supposedly secret...wonder how old Greenfield reacted.

how times have changed

Young girls today are subjected to low expectations, changing morality, and irresponsibility, pampered and spoiled, abortion instead of responsibility.  Here is a mom who defies that society. She allows her daughter to make decisions for herself, offer support and acceptance, and a home for her and her child but requires Bristol to continue her education and care for her infant herself. And this is a neglectful mother. Wow. I worked for 30 yrs as a social worker in Child Protective Services. I was not aware that "neglectful mother" has been redefined. I am so out of touch. Oh, wait, this from another liberal idiot. Never mind.

I hope he fails, soon.  nujac

Another dem hag...

Another dem hag trying to let us know how smart she is and how dirty and unwashed we all are.  I can't even read this trash any more.  When do we get to pillory these idiots?

TERM LIMITS FOR ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS!

And, yes, I am shouting

Did someone say something?

I'm sorry, did someone say something, I was watching the game.

Well, were you?

Only those who went to their marriage beds as virgins can accuse Palin of being a mother who failed to  "RULE"  her daughter.  It happens.  Kids and older men and women have sex and face pregnancy.  It's a national epeidemic - it's not only acceptable but sometimes sought out by some girls.  Bristol's main problem was to have sex with Levi - but then the hermones and hismones don't use common sense to unite.  Let's stop this silly debate.  This is a prime example of pointing the finger means that you are pointing 3 back to you.  Even Obama's mom was pregnant prior to marriage.
