WaPo Charges 'Grand Old Purging' of Scozzafava Shows 'Republican Dysfunction'

The Washington Post is still having trouble with how the voters rejected their favorite Democrats. The bias erupted in a front page headline on Tuesday:

'Scozzafava' turns into epithet

It's a Grand Old Purging as moderate's ouster spotlights Republican dysfunction

Actually, that could be the motto of the Washington Post: "Spotlighting Republican Dysfunction Since 1968." Reporter Jason Horowitz brought that same jaunty liberal attitude into the body of the story:

A little-known state assemblywoman with moderate Republican views and a mouthful of a surname, Scozzafava's bid for an open seat in New York's 23rd Congressional District drew trash talk from conservative leaders hoping to purge her from the party, mash notes from White House-dispatched Democratic suitors that included Bill Clinton, and the unblinking gaze of political professionals fascinated by her role as the problem child for a dysfunctional Republican Party.

Readers are urged to dab the corners of their eyes with a tissue as Scozzafava is persecuted by the Palins and Becks:

At her desk, with a fuzzy elephant face down on a bookshelf behind her, she recalled the exhausting end days of her campaign. Violet semicircles hung below her teary eyes as she recounted how Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and other conservative leaders excoriated her for less-than-orthodox positions on gay rights, abortion and organized labor. Her nose reddened as she recalled her abrupt exit from the special election to replace John M. McHugh, whom President Obama had appointed as secretary of the Army earlier in the year.

"Less than orthodox"? In fact, her positions on abortion and "gay marriage" are quite orthodox – for a liberal Democrat. Horowitz then merges all the conservative critiques of Scozzafava, fair and unfair, sourced and (ahem) very loosely sourced, into a messy mix tape of nastiness:

She heard through friends that Palin insinuated she had been "anointed" by a "political machine" because county chairs handpicked her as the nominee. Beck denounced her as "ACORN-supported" and an "Obama-Lite Republican." Former House majority leader Dick Armey's group FreedomWorks mobilized against her. She said she heard conservative robo-calls in the district describing her as a "child killer," a "lesbian lover" and a "homo."

Describing Scozzafava as "anointed" is hardly as unfair as calling her a "homo," but Horowitz is in the middle of a passionate "Grand Old Purging" narrative and can hardly be bothered to consider the finer points of journalistic etiquette.

Horowitz then spun a tale of how Scozzafava was aggressively pursued and charmed by the liberal Democrats in a "White House-orchestrated initiative" to get her to endorse Democrat Bill Owens. Somehow it’s not a tale of "Republican dysfunction" that Scozzafava was so "Republican" that she eagerly endorsed the Democrat. Liberal notables called, like Andrew Cuomo: "You're probably the next governor," Scozzafava said she told Cuomo.

Apparently, the Lord inspired her to endorse the Democrat:

On Sunday morning, after her first good night's sleep in days, Scozzafava went to choir practice at the First United Methodist Church of Gouverneur. Somewhere during her singing of "I went down in the valley to pray," she said she decided to endorse Owens.

Horowitz ended the story by channeling Scozzafava’s declaration of war on those ignorant conservatives:

Scozzafava, who was stripped of her Republican leadership position in the New York State Assembly on Monday, says she has no regrets and even leaves open the possibility of running for the seat again as a Republican. She sees herself as a champion of local expertise over ideological purity.

"How can Sarah Palin come out and endorse someone who can't answer some basic questions," Scozzafava asked. "Do these people even know who they are endorsing?"

Those conservative forces now descend on Florida, where former House speaker Marco Rubio, who on Monday received the endorsement of the Club for Growth, might shove aside centrist Gov. Charlie Crist, who was once on John McCain's short list for running mate. And Scozzafava has a warning.

"There is a lot of us who consider ourselves Republicans, of the Party of Lincoln," she said, her face now flush. "If they don't want us with them, we're going to work against them."

For a look at how Jason Horowitz handles "purging" in the Democratic Party and liberal intolerance (from New York Times editorial page writers), at least as it relates to the gun-rights position of newly appointed Sen. Kristen Gillibrand of New York, see his New York Observer piece here.

The woman's a lib-dem. She

The woman's a lib-dem. She even endorsed the dem. She was a dem plant, NOT a "moderate".

We saw that, and the independent came within 3% of victory, with 6% of the vote going to the woman who had pulled out.

If the RNC hadn't spent a million dollars pushing this lib-dem, they would have another seat right now.

Really?

Her true colors came out in the end when she supported the Democrat candidate.  She took $900,000 from the Republican Party for her campaign, but doesn't see anything wrong with supporting the opposite party?  If anything, she is an example of what is wrong with the Republican Party and why people like her need to be left behind while the GOP rebuilds itself.  Instead of allowing her to feel sorry for herself and to play the victim, the GOP should sue her for taking their money and then helping the Democrat win the election.  It sounds like she commited fraud and she should return the money that was given to her for the use of getting her elected, not for her to help the other party get elected.  She is a scumbag in every sence of the word!!!!

Sue?

The dems tried to punish Lieberman in any they could for endorsing McCain, but I do not believe they had grounds to sue

Not Quite

Lieberman is an Independant, and free to do whatever he feels is right.
He didn't take a million dollars from the Dems, then screw over the
party. He was thrown out of the party for not goose-stepping to the
Dems mantra on Iraq.

He is now free to do, say and endorse anyone he wants.

When he's up for re-election in 2012, he'll probably run as a
Republican.  While Dodd, who ran TV adds for Ned Lamont, will be out of
the Senate this time next year.

She's a joke.  She's a joke played on us.  We don't like this joke played on us, but somebody got a good laugh out of it.

A bunch of Democrats got together in a pizza parlour and decided to run this frumpy buffoon as a Republican.

If anything, "getting the Scozzafava" should refer to the classic RINO bait and switch.

Selection committee?

The question that I would like answered is how did these clowns end up on the selection committee? Seems to me that this district has a lot of Democrats pretending to be Republicans.

It's Very Simple

Don't believe anything they say. They are trying to choose our candidates for us so when "we" win they win.  They hate Republicans/Conservatives but if they are forced to accept a two-party system then they want their kind of Republicans, namely McCains et al.

"Race doesn't matter..liberals are only one color - YELLOW"

It's become almost comically

It's become almost comically predictable, hasn't it? We are now routinely hearing advice from the lefty media crackpot commentators on how the R's ought to behave, what decisions we should be making, what candidates we ought to be choosing.

Purging the party of half wits and phonies is, in fact, a sign of health and vigor, and a long-awaited resurgence of basic principles we expect candidates who claim to be either conservative or Republican to uphold.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Party Civil War

I have not heard much "reporting" from the Lame Stream Media (LSM) on the following:

Democratic civil war update: MoveOn raises $3.6 million to attack party moderates

I would not call it disfunction

......however downplaying losing a seat that has been held by republicans for 100 years with a candidate that was endorsed by major conservative heavyweights like Palin, Limbaugh and Beck is every bit as silly as the Dems downplaying their losses in NJ and VA. All three races were quite significant

→ Shawn228

Excuse the reference to WIKI, but this nonsense claim to Republican succession back to the Civil War is a construct invented by Democrats to paint NY-23 as some sort of redneck stronghold.

Scroll down that page and explain what Nancy meant when she excreted that story about the Civil War.

You may continue to claim to have your facts straight on this one.  I won't argue further.

I have a scientific

I have a scientific question for you this morning CA.

If shawns lone brain cell screams out in loneliness, and there are no other brain cells to hear it, does his brain cell really exist?

Very nice Willis

Good move trying to get Cool to slam me, but little bit of news for you. Cool likes to take good natured ribbing at me, but I respect him as poster. So have fun.

oh now shawn, yer just

oh now shawn, yer just upset because I'm still right, and you're still wrong.

Enjoy life little buddy, it's too short to take seriously.

http://gjresult.com

No problem Willis

I never take too many things seriously. Hey if you want to go pre school Willis Jackson on me and make no brain jokes, more power to you. Lifes too short, you have a nice day.

Dear shawn...

Welcome to the real world.

A world full of anomalies and abnormalities that will enchant, amuse, mystify and horrify the human mind.

First, a bit of history.  I am 62 years old and have spent my life studying people and the things they do.

I have NEVER seen a "well thought out liberal plan" such a thing does not, nor can one exist in the real world, because the real world has an ugly habit of pointing out the flaws.

That reality thing holds true with all plans, just when functionally literate people make plans, they plan for the realities of any given situation.

For instance, when the United States military plays war, they play to win and they are very good at it.

But when liberals take control of the situation, the plans get altered to fit the liberal 'think' ideals and things go south and our military men and women pay dearly.

When liberal plan for a new government bureaucracy, they plan for utopia. Reality understands that 'utopia' does not exist. So the liberal use the failure to buy votes from those failures in lifes lottery that cannot think for themselves.

Look up your favorite government program or bureaucracy, discover who came up with the plan, and what their stated goals were.

Then compare the current status of that plan after reality stuck its nose in and altered the plan with real world facts and circumstances.

You come in here and spout your liberal positions, and I really do welcome your viewpoints, and expect to be treated with the utmost respect.

I'll 'respect' you, as long as you do not require me to follow blindly along your path that has been proven to fail every time it has been tried in every third world country on the planet.

Fair enough shawn?

http://gjresult.com

Dear Willis

I am 38 years old and I was taught to respect my elders and I will do that if you stop with the troll and brain cell digs.

You will be surprised to know that I agree with many of your points. Liberals want to give a free lunch every sad story and every illegal immigrant that they see it is wrong.

Obama has put our country in a very bad position militarily and his spending in just his first few months alone has been downright frightening.

So why do I call myself a liberal you ask? I consider myself a moderate that sees faults with both parties and point them out when I get a chance. I really liked Reagan, but I also really liked Clinton. The reason I call myself a lib is because apparently most people on this site consider moderates the same liberals and our votes do not matter to them, so I thought I would just go with the flow and call myself a lib.

If you don't mind Willis, I know it is something you don't like to do, but do you think you can come up with a few examples of me spouting my liberal views? Except for personal freedoms like pot or porn, I am curious on what they are . Thank you Willis.

  No problem

No problem shawn.

You disagree with me.

That puts you sorta on the liberal side.

You disagree with a lot of other users.

Even though, in order to make your disagreements known, you interject yourself into the thread in insulting ways.

That sorta makes you a troll.

http://gjresult.com

Hmmm Willis

I disagreed with you about all mass murder shootings were all liberals, I don't really recall disagreeing you about much else.

I said I believe that religion should be sacred and losing NY 23 is not a small deal, and I don't know of anyone that has called me a troll or sort of troll for a long time except for someone I lovingly refer to as corporal klinger.

Your points for I am a liberal is because I disagree with some of your points and your point for backing up all mass shootings at the mall or other places are all liberal is telling people  it is not your job to prove it and making others  prove you wrong.

You are very certainly the master of copying and pasting parts of the constitution, but you really don't back up your own points very well, would that make you a sorta troll ?

edit

  Oh shawn, yer just

Oh shawn, yer just ever so much fun.

Everybody else backed away from even trying to prove me wrong on that statement due to the fact that the closest they could get to 'labelling' one of the shooters as 'non-liberal' was one of the shooters was "Born on a Military Base" and 'that tiny little detail' made him a conservative..

Does the following sentence make sense to you?

Troll trolling.

http://gjresult.com

Thank you for the compliment Willis

Actually what I mean is you expect me to back up everything I say, but your tactic is telling everyone it is their job to prove you wrong.

I' m merely asking for you to back up your points. Do you have any proof at all of your claim the Columbine shooters are liberal, a simple yes or no would do, or you can do what you normally do and answer a question with a question.

I am also asking for examples of my spouting of liberal views are.  It really very simple Willis. I mean I know your genius with using other peoples words and copying and pasting he declaration and past verse. I mean anyone can copy and paste, buy you, my goodness, you have it down to an artform, I mean the way you highlight, your bold face letters, you emphasis on words are brilliant.

I mean there is no telling what you do with your talent. I'm not sure if NB has any rule on plagurism, but you can mix and match your own words with great leaders, like when a NB author doe not like a liberal. You can say "Mr Shetfield, tear down this Democrat"   You are going to go far sir.

  It's spelled

It's spelled 'plagiarism' and there are specific sets of circumstances for the charge to be applied.

You also, will go far, if we were to travel in the same direction, we could share experiences over dinner on occassion.

I'm going up, but alas, you are destined to go back down to a more comfortable level... under your bridge for the night I suppose.

http://gjresult.com

ahhh

not answering questions, being a spelling police and troll implications, nice debating you Willis, your skills are top notch.

Did you learn your debating

Did you learn your debating skills from Keith Olbemann?

not quite, again

Trying to brag about winning a Republican seat, when there was NO Republican running for that seat, and the Independant almost kicked your ass, is truly pathetic.

And the most basic example of political spin.

The republican party is not

The republican party is not dysfunctional.

But the people that run the republican party in some States are extremely dysfunctional.

Those with stable, intelligent minds would have never put this turtle on that post in the first place.

But, for the last 30 years, neither party has shown much stability or intellectual prowess with the candidates they have presented to the American People for their viewing pleasure.

http://gjresult.com

"But, for the last 30

"But, for the last 30 years, neither party has shown much stability or
intellectual prowess with the candidates they have presented to the
American People"

That would then mean that they are dysfunctional, yes.

'partys' are inanimate

'partys' are inanimate objects and therefore incapable of being dysfunctional.

The 'people' running the various local, state, and national branches are dysfunctional with a few exceptions.

There are a few local units that put forth decent, honest Citizens that are proud of their country and desire to work for the betterment of the nation.

Like the group in upstate NY, most are run by fools and idiots.

As a student here at the

As a student here at the Newsbusters school of media bias for a while I have picked up a thing or two about reading the stitches on the curve balls that the media pitches and one thing I have learned is that the things the media does not report can be as interesting and illuminating of their bias as the things they do say. I first became aware of the NY-23 election when Scozzafava or her staff, called the police on a reporter who was asking the candidate pointed questions. After that the story became Scozzafava’s falling poll numbers culminating in Scozzafava drops out of race. I notice in all the post election analysis no one ever mentions this incident. Rather than a purge or a civil war in the republican party, the main media narrative, I see an elitist brittle politician who shot herself in the foot by grossly overreacting to a tough reporter.

Scozzafava's political migration continues:

Scozzafava Resigns Republican Assembly Leadership Seat: http://www.weaselzippers.net/blog/

What's her next move? A switch to the democratic party? A position in the White House, perhaps Czar of the Adirondacks? Or will they trash her like they did Arlen Specter?

By the way, she pulled out of the race because democratic party inside polls told them that if she pulled out it would help Owens more than hurt. Had she stayed in Hoffman likely would have pulled it off. She did what the democratics told her to do. Anyone that believes otherwise is naive.

Dems Have Litmus Tests Too

There's nothing unusual about parties expecting their candidates to tow ideological lines.  Back in 2000, my neighbor--a rabid local Dem operative--tried to recruit me to run for City Council.  Like most Bay Area Libs, she simply assumed that I was a Democrat... isn't everybody?  She then informed me that the local Dem party was trying to recruit women and minorities to run for Council seats.  To turn on the campaign cash spigot, all I had to do was pledge to be Pro-Abortion, Pro-Gay Marriage, and Pro-Union.  If I did not agree with any or all of these three stances, the Dems would make sure that I didn't stand a chance of getting elected (and, yes, my neighbor did phrase it that way). Pot meet kettle.
