First Day Contrast: Olbermann Called Tiller Shooting 'Terrorism' and a 'Jihad,' But Avoided Those Terms for Fort Hood

On June 1 of this year, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann devoted most of his hour of Countdown to his withering outrage at the shooting of late-term abortionist George Tiller in Kansas (and how it was caused by Fox News).

The tone was dramatically different than his tone on November 5, the night of the Islamic terrorist shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas. Here’s Olbermann’s very dry opening: "Nightmare at Fort Hood: How could a soldier kill at least 12 other soldiers and wounded at least 31 more? And why?"

Here are words that Olbermann did not use on that first night last week: jihad, fundamentalist, crusaders, extremists, terrorism, zealot, Taliban, Hamas, al-Qaeda. All of these, however, were used in the first seconds of the Tiller show in June. That began this way:

Domestic terrorism: Dr. George Tiller -- women’s health physician, performer of legal abortions -- is assassinated in his church. And in the very same sentence, anti-choice zealots wash their hands of his murder and say he had it coming.

After all the promotional lingo, Olbermann grew even hotter:

A religious jihad by fundamentalist crusaders who believe that murder is justified, their acts of violence having the intended effect of changing behavior. Our fifth story on the Countdown: Not the Taliban, not Hamas, not al Qaeda. If the brutal murder of Dr. George Tiller -- the Wichita OB/GYN who, among many other things, provided abortions -- does not qualify as an act domestic terrorism, what does?

When comparing the two programs, it’s quite apparent that Olbermann has a lot more ardor and distaste for conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and Michelle Bachmann than he does for Major Hasan. In fact, the Fort Hood shooting was demoted to story number four (it also got second billing in the show's introduction), so he could lead with the conservative-bashing:

An elected Republican official today is leading a protest on the west steps of the Capitol that compared health care reform to Nazi death camps and encouraged mindless harassment of and possibly violence against the government. Not tea baggers anymore, not demagogic commentators, an actual congresswoman inciting a hateful rebellion against the rule of law and order. Her name is Michele Bachmann.

In other words, he had more outrage for the alleged violence against the government that may some day be spurred by the rhetoric of Bachmann than the actual violence committed on federal property by Major Hasan.

His single segment on Fort Hood (as opposed to several on Tiller on the first night) made no ridiculous detours to blame cable-news networks -- even al-Jazeera. In it, he interviewed former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt, who did softly raise the M-word, and the subject of Islamic grievances:

OLBERMANN: When you consider how something like this must end, no matter what the motive was, no matter what the premise of it was, wherever he might have thought was rational as he did it -- what leads a person, and I guess this the ultimate question in these scenarios, to take out other people`s lives and other people's lives to cause such pain among -- basically people who have nothing to do with him. These are not direct victims, we assume. Rather than, why do it that way when rather than just cut to the chase and if you say, "I can`t bear to go and I'm going to end my own life," why not do that first, in other words. I know it`s crass-sounding, but why is that choice made to involve others?

VAN ZANDT: I think one of his alleged Internet postings gives us a clue to that, Keith, where he suggests that a suicide bombing, in essence, the killing of innocents is the equivalent of throwing yourself on a grenade to save others. In his mind.

OLBERMANN: Yes.

VAN ZANDT: In his challenged mind, that mass murder may have been somehow saving the lives of Muslims in the Middle East.

While Olbermann didn't use the word "terrorism," he did worry that some might describe the shootings as a "terrorist act," which, in his mind, is a much more questionable call than the Tiller shooting:

OLBERMANN: And there -- is there an expectation that at some point, his goals and his personal goals got merged with some anti-American point of view? Is this going to wind up being classified as a terrorist act? What do you think about that aspect that so many people want to know about?

VAN ZANDT: Yes. We all -- we always want to know motive.

OLBERMANN: Yes.

VAN ZANDT: A jury always wants to know the motive, why someone did something. And most of us, Keith, were relatively complex creatures. We have multiple motives.

So, even though this is a man who told no relative of his that he was going to be deployed, he was so angry, he was so upset, there may have been something else -- something in his Internet communications, something in his religion, in his politics, that gave him a secondary motive for doing what he did. That`s the job of investigators.

OLBERMANN: Yes.

VAN ZANDT: As they go through his Internet, they go you through his mail, they try to understand what terrible trip this man took inside of his mind that led him to take the lives of others, whereas a medical doctor, he swore that he would save lives, not take them.

OLBERMANN: Clint Van Zandt, former profiler with the FBI --- great thanks to you for helping us begin to understand what happened today.

Olbermann also saved his "Worst Person in the World" awards for Rush Limbaugh (Worser) and Rupert Murdoch (Worst). Bizarrely, there was no room in that contest for the mass murderer of 13 Americans.

Olbermann failed to close the show with any suggestion of thoughts or prayers or gratitude for the lost at Fort Hood. He was stuck in conservative-bashing mode:

That's Countdown for this the 2,380th day since the previous president declared "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq. I'm Keith Olbermann. See you tomorrow night, I hope, with analysis of the self-destruction of Carrie Prejean. Until then, good night and good luck.

Olberman Is..

Olberman is pornography personified! I'd like the opportunity to knock this guys block off, even if it meant going to prison!

GA... He brings that

GA...

He brings that reaction out in anybody with brains.

I cannot stand to listen to even his 'Worst Person in the World' segment anymore....which I used to switch the channels between him and BOR during commercials...no can do anymore.

Saying he is infuriating is putting it mildly...and much too polite.

Officer....I saw the whole thing.

Olbermann shoved him for no reason.   It was self defense.

" if Republicans are able to stop Barack Obama on health care, 'it will be his Waterloo, it will break him....-Sen. Jim DeMint

The way the MSM is

The way the MSM is denying/downplaying the Jihad aspect of this shooting is insulting.  If we had reacted this way after Pearl Harbor we'd be speaking German and Japanese right now.   Americans aren't stupid as Congress will find out in 2010.

In the same vein as this hypocrisy, I can't help but hear that the Stupack amendment is taking away women's choices (abortion wise).  They don't seem to care that the choice of people to HAVE or NOT HAVE health insurance is also being taken away.

Rad... Great point about

Rad...

Great point about abortion vs OCare when it comes to choice.

Plus we can be fined and jailed if we don't join.

If the health plan is SO

If the health plan is SO GREAT, why oh why do they make it a crime to refuse to join such a great club.  Fines and possible prison for not proving you have coverage.  So they are criminalizing part of society that are currently free to choose.  So they are pro-choice?  Where is the logic if it is so good?  Why does congress have another plan?  Total BS!  2010!  M-B

HMMM, You might be on to something

NeoHealthcare: If you don't buy insurance, the government will require you to get some under penalty of criminal law. Because all God's children need healthcare and if you don't pay for your own, you're just some moocher who drives everybody else's costs up.

Abortioncare: If you don't get an abortion and if the government, by consulting your neighbors and others, determines that you represent a risk to your child, to the economic well-being of your community and family, and to the flow of income taxes , then the government can require you to have an abortion for everyone's peace of mind and economic parity.

And of course if some woman

And of course if some woman decides to have unprotected sex and wants to get an abortion(s) part of my money has to pay for it.  She is entitled to her behavior and not to face the consequences for it. /sarc

question

If hateful rhetoric on talk radio inspired Dr. Tiller's death, does the same standard not apply that media cries of "illegal war in Iraq" and "American aggression against Islam" responsible for inspiring Muslims who revolt?

This IS terrorism and it is

This IS terrorism and it is about time the TRUTH is SAID.  This is the first attack under Obama & I do not think it will be the last.  The media are covering for Obama by NOT calling it terrorism.  They are protecting him since that would obviously reflect poorly on Obama.  I would not be surprised if another attack happens today with Obama being down there for the service.  Obama DOES embolden jihadists since he has no plan to defeat them outright.  Obama may think he will be spared by jihadists since he feels for them and can relate to them.  Guess he will be surprised when the are proven to be merciless unless you convert to very, very strict jihad belief system.

Exactly!  Very peaceful

Exactly!  Very peaceful thought isn't it?  THAT should make you be very wary of their motivations as demonstrated by Hasans own statements.  And it is OK for them to lie to infidels to further the cause.

I was telling my family yesterday that this has only begun.  Thankfully, we have media otherthan the msm to give us the truth.

These PC agents (FBI?) that

These PC agents (FBI?) that investigated him (or their bosses who seem to have protected Hasan) better be held responsible for these deaths.  Hasan was "turned-in" with some very incriminating "rants."  Instead, they promote the guy!  PC government at work!  Now they want to run health care!  If they can't catch Hasan, who can they catch?   More attacks MUST be on the way.  How could there not be?  M-B

MB...

Agreed.

By the way....It's taken me quite awhile to not be outraged as I have been...all I know is, as you say, there has to be more to come, this was most likely just the tip of the iceberg...and what we've seen so far as anyone doing anything about terrorists like Hasan is not much help.

'Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea'~Breitbart

Max....Let's see, now.

Max....Let's see, now. Federal investigators (FBI, I would imagine) decide, after 4-5 days that Hasan acted absolutely alone on Friday. No one else was involved. None. Case closed.

Good grief, after the huge trail Hasan left behind him, his association with a radical nutjob imman, his affiliation with a mosque that preached terrorism, his own words of warning about terrorists in the military? 4-5 days after the killings, they conclude absolutely, no question about it, he acted alone? No terrorism? No networking going on? All those emails to terrorists mean nothing?

It takes more time than that to challenge a traffic violation.

This event has more moving parts than one man acting alone.

There's something much larger than Hasan going on here, IMHO.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Good read

While I have no sympathy for Rush or fox news or michelle bachman who got shout outs in this post, I also detest Olberman. this type of political correctness is terrible. "Let's not offend anyone (unless christian), regardless of their murderous motive" is how the liberal saying goes.

Scott Roeder, the Tiller shooter...

Speaking of The Dan, I had to laugh last night when I saw an ad on ESPN about an upcoming show on Jimmy the Greek.  There appeared a serious-faced commentator who propounded, "He rose to the very pinnacle of his game, then fell to the very bottom.  THAT's a story."

The commentator?  The fallen Dan Rather himself.  How ironic.

Olbermann loves it

It seems obvious to me that Olbermann aka Uberdork thrives on the negative response he gets on the web. His position on MSNBC is an attempt at matching Hannity and Linbaugh at political baiting. If he were completly ignored he would be gone when his contract is up.

Olbermann-don't blame O'Reilly - blame Carter & the Dalai Lama

Olbermann should not have been blaming TV personalities like Bill O'Reilly, etc. in the abortion death issue; rather he should target those who he considers world leaders - like Jimmy Carter & the Dalai Lama.

Former President Jimmy Carter yesterday condemned all abortions and chastised his party for its intolerance of candidates and nominees who oppose abortion.   "I never have felt that any abortion should be committed.." The Washington Times, Nov. 4, 2005

According to the National Right to Life there have been: 49,551,703 abortions since 1973.

Seems that one could suggest that qualifies as an act of domestic terrorism!

If Islam were the religion

If Islam were the religion of choice for wealthy Caucasians, there would be no such fawning by the Leftists.  Islam is the current useful tool of the Marxists in helping to spread discontent and possibly foment revolution.

In their minds all religions are detrimental to mankind and the secular progressive movement and so are ultimately expendable and they are confident all major religions will eventually be done away with.

The Muslims hold these atheists in higher contempt than either Jews or Christians, because at least the latter do believe in the God of Abraham.
