Catholic News Agency reports The New York Times refused to publish an op-ed submitted by the Archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan, that complained that Times news reports and opinion columns were anti-Catholic. Archbishop Dolan wrote the "most combustible example" was "an intemperate and scurrilous piece" on the opinion pages of the Times by Maureen Dowd.
"In a diatribe that rightly never would have passed muster with the editors had it so criticized an Islamic, Jewish, or African-American religious issue, she digs deep into the nativist handbook to use every anti-Catholic caricature possible, from the Inquisition to the Holocaust, condoms, obsession with sex, pedophile priests, and oppression of women, all the while slashing Pope Benedict XVI for his shoes, his forced conscription -- along with every other German teenage boy -- into the German army, his outreach to former Catholics, and his recent welcome to Anglicans."
Describing the current visitation of women religious by Vatican representatives as "the matter that triggered the spasm" of Dowd, Archbishop Dolan says that it "is well-worth discussing, and hardly exempt from legitimate questioning." "But her prejudice, while maybe appropriate for the Know-Nothing newspaper of the 1850’s, the Menace, has no place in a major publication today."
"I do not mean to suggest that anti-Catholicism is confined to the pages New York Times," writes Archbishop Dolan, who also admits that "the Catholic Church is not above criticism."
"We Catholics do a fair amount of it ourselves. We welcome and expect it. All we ask is that such critique be fair, rational, and accurate, what we would expect for anybody. The suspicion and bias against the Church is a national pastime that should be ‘rained out’ for good."
NB's Dave Pierre also ripped the Dowd column to pieces earlier this week. What is Dowd's problem? Has all that stewing in the juices of the secular and libertine liberalism of the media elite really converted her to the point that she's compared to Know-Nothings?
The Archbishop titled his article "Foul Ball!" He also decried other examples:
- On October 14, in the pages of the New York Times, reporter Paul Vitello exposed the sad extent of child sexual abuse in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community. According to the article, there were forty cases of such abuse in this tiny community last year alone. Yet the Times did not demand what it has called for incessantly when addressing the same kind of abuse by a tiny minority of priests: release of names of abusers, rollback of statute of limitations, external investigations, release of all records, and total transparency. Instead, an attorney is quoted urging law enforcement officials to recognize “religious sensitivities,” and no criticism was offered of the DA’s office for allowing Orthodox rabbis to settle these cases “internally.” Given the Catholic Church’s own recent horrible experience, I am hardly in any position to criticize our Orthodox Jewish neighbors, and have no wish to do so . . . but I can criticize this kind of “selective outrage.”
- Of course, this selective outrage probably should not surprise us at all, as we have seen many other examples of the phenomenon in recent years when it comes to the issue of sexual abuse. To cite but two: In 2004, Professor Carol Shakeshaft documented the wide-spread problem of sexual abuse of minors in our nation’s public schools (the study can be found here). In 2007, the Associated Press issued a series of investigative reports that also showed the numerous examples of sexual abuse by educators against public school students. Both the Shakeshaft study and the AP reports were essentially ignored, as papers such as the New York Times only seem to have priests in their crosshairs.
- On October 16, Laurie Goodstein of the Times offered a front page, above-the-fold story on the sad episode of a Franciscan priest who had fathered a child. Even taking into account that the relationship with the mother was consensual and between two adults, and that the Franciscans have attempted to deal justly with the errant priest’s responsibilities to his son, this action is still sinful, scandalous, and indefensible. However, one still has to wonder why a quarter-century old story of a sin by a priest is now suddenly more pressing and newsworthy than the war in Afghanistan, health care, and starvation–genocide in Sudan. No other cleric from religions other than Catholic ever seems to merit such attention.
These all seem like fair complaints. (The Times covered the subject of Archbishop Dolan's blog this week, but did not mention his Times-critique blog post.) If the Times is going to refuse to publish them, at the very least, they should be evaluated by the Public Editor.

I admit, I do. There ain't a spit's worth of difference between the two theologically. We have almost the identical liturgy. Don't Anglicans also claim the same continuity of ordination to St. Peter?
I'd also like the Catholic Church to revisit its ban on marriage for new priests. I know it's hard to get around a vow, once it's made to the Lord, but I favor married clergy.

Correct
November 1, 2009 - 19:59 ET by KC MulvilleWith both the Lutherans and Anglicans, their bishops who ordained new priests (and therefore carried on the succession) were valid bishops themselves. Other Protestant denominations rejected clergy and succession outright, so it would be harder to integrate their ministers -- no bishop ever ordained them, so they had no succession. Therefore, if you wanted to get legalistic about it, the succession remains. I'm sure the canon lawyers would hem and haw about the difference between valid and licit succession, but from a purely sacramental point of view, I believe the succession continues.
The Catholic Church does not ban all married priests; only those of the Latin Rite. All of the Eastern Orthodox Catholic priests can get married. (In 1054 the Eastern church separated from the western Latin church; i.e., Constantinople split from Rome. However, over the years, many of them "came back;" estimates are about a third of the Orthodox rejoined the Catholic church. That bloc returned exactly as they had left, with a married priesthood. ) All of the debates about married priesthood are all done within the Latin Rite. The other rites, fully and equally Catholic, have married priests.
I would also like to see priests marry. Of course, I have a vested interest in it, so my bias is showing. I don't think it will solve every problem. And, in the end, I freely accept that it isn't my call. But, there I stand.

November 1, 2009 - 11:20 ET by Dim BulbAh, those darned facts again; they always have such a liberal bias.
The problem with facts is that they can be used for scurrilous innuendo and ad hominem, both of which are acts of falacious logic and debate, and even a falacious use of the facts themselves.
If a certain New York City newspaper pimped slavery in the 1840's, or racist eugenics in the 1920's, my mentioning these facts today merely becuase the paper has written an article critical of Obama's policies, or an article supporting stem cell research would be an attempt to blacken the character of today's editors, muddy the waters, and inflame the passions of others in an attempt to get them to side with me. Statements like "Pope Benedict XVI, who once was the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (which used to be called the inquisition)..."is an example of such deceitful rhetorical use of facts.
As for your statement that facts always have a liberal bias-the fact that you chose sarcasm over an actual response to the facts presented by the Archbishop sort of puts the lie to such a quip.
Did anyone reading my words about "a certain New York City newspaper" suspect or conclude that I was talking about the Times? C'mon, 'fess up! You did, didn't you? But the fact is I was not, for I have no idea what the paper's position on slavery and racist eungenics was. That's how easily misleading innuendo, ad hominem and other logical fallacies can be.

November 1, 2009 - 19:55 ET by TailgunnerIf you're going to make the repeated claim that conservatives (which you call 'bigots', despite the fact that David Duke and Sen Robert Byrd are or have run as Democrats) are dumb enough to fall for Colbert's obvious satire, then I think it's appropriate to expect you to support that claim with credible evidence.
Otherwise we'll conclude that you just pulled that claim, as liberals often do, out of your ass.
The real problem here is liberals who misinterpret (or simply misquote) conservative pundits like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.
Whether conservative satire is subtle like Rush's, or outrageous like Coulter's, liberals consistently miss their points, hyperventilate, manufacture fake outrage, and usually end up looking foolish in the end.

Maureen Dowd and her singleness
November 1, 2009 - 12:30 ET by zachlindIt’s clear what her illness is, no man in her life. She’s been wandering in the singleness wilderness for many years she appears to be both confused and desperate about her cravings. Companionless, coupled with long lonely nights and no hope, particularly with the opposite sex, can be a burden that’s most difficult to carry for someone that’s been on this planet for close to six decades. Perhaps a change of profession could ease her fever. A quick phone call to Alan Grayson of Florida might help; he seems to be able to quickly identify the type of job people should have.
