On 'Hate Crimes Day,' Remembering Media Blackout of Jesse Dirkhising's Death

On a day in which media liberals will celebrate President Obama for signing a bill against "hate crimes" against gays and lesbians, a bill named for Matthew Shepard, it might be time again to remember the name of Jesse Dirkhising, who died ten years ago this fall to a national media blackout. Here's Brent Bozell from 1999:

When Matthew Shepard died on October 12, 1998 at the age of 21, five days after getting into a pickup truck with two goons who beat him mercilessly, he had already become a huge national news story that continues today. It made the cover of Time magazine with the headline "The War Over Gays," with reporters predictably using the occasion to blame religious conservatives and call for hate-crime laws and other gay-left agenda items.

But when Jesse Dirkhising died on September 26 at the age of 13 from suffocation after being bound, gagged with underwear in his mouth, blindfolded, taped to the bed, and sodomized by one gay man while another gay man watched, the national media said nothing, even after The Washington Times exposed the untold story.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

In this modern media age, when lurid murders, especially of children, dance in the dreams of ratings-obsessed network producers (can you say JonBenet?), why would this story go untold? Had Jesse Dirkhising been shot inside his Arkansas school, he would have been an immediate national news story. Had he been openly gay and his attackers heterosexual, the crime would have led all the networks. But no liberal media outlet would dare be the first to tell a grisly murder story which has as its villains two gay men.

The primary offender in this tale of politically correct self-censorship is the Associated Press, which waved the flag of the Shepard beating on its national wire for everyone to see. By contrast, the Dirkhising murder was never put on the national wire, and its local dispatches were 200-word puddles of colorless court reporting that suggested to editors this story was bound for Page B-17. Despite Dirkhising's death from what his killers implied was a "sex game" gone bad, AP never described them as gay men.

But you can bet that nearly every national media outlet that has now seen this story and tossed it in the garbage pail has in its newsroom a vocal caucus of gay and lesbian employees. Nearly every national media outlet sets up recruiting booths at the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association convention each year, and helps pay for the convention by placing cheerleading ads in the program. The NLGJA web site has boasted of events with network anchors like Dan Rather.

You can bet that nearly every national media outlet hears the footsteps of a gay-left activist like Cathy Renna of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, who told an early October gathering, "One of the most important things you can do is have those tough conversations with journalists about when it is completely inappropriate to run to some radical group like the Family Research Council because of misguided notions of 'balance.' We have to offer them some more moderate voices, or convince them that there is no other side to these issues....We are now in the position of being able to say, we have the high ground, we have the facts, and we don't have to go one-on-one with these people."

Clearly her censorious message is winning.

But the double standard here is much more than matching the hundreds of Shepard stories with the gaping silence on Dirkhising. The other ignored story here is exposed right in the first paragraphs of Joyce Howard Price's Washington Times story. David Smith, a spokesman for the gay group calling itself the "Human Rights Campaign," seemed to care little about the human rights of Jesse Dirkhising. "This has nothing to do with gay people," he claimed, in complete disregard of the facts.

This is the same "Human Rights Campaign" that milks the Matthew Shepard murder as its most powerful fundraising tool, and which featured Shepard's family in its recent annual fundraising dinner. More importantly, this is the same "Human Rights Campaign" that led the national media by the nose to the ridiculous charge that Shepard was killed not by the two strangers he followed out of a bar, but by Christian conservatives who bought newspaper ads urging gays to return to Christ.

Whatever becomes of the Jesse Dirkhising story -- and it looks like it's headed right for Juanita Broaddrick limbo -- you can bet that conservatives will not climb on any national platform making absurd claims that he was killed by Ellen DeGeneres. Conservatives won't indict the "Human Rights Campaign" for murder for taking out newspaper ads for National Coming Out Day. But the burial of Jesse Dirkhising's story also buries the fact that the right cannot match the left for poisonous incivility, reckless guilt by association, and ugly rhetorical excess.

The Dirkhising story never caught on with the major media, which claimed it was not news because it was not a "hate crime." As Jonathan Gregg wrote then for Time.com:

"The most salient difference between the Shepard case and this one, however, is that while Shepard's murderers were driven to kill by hate, the boy's rape and death was a sex crime. " He continued: "It was the kind of depraved act that happens with even more regularity against young females, and, indeed, if the victim had been a 13-year-old girl, the story would probably never have gotten beyond Benton County, much less Arkansas.

That came in the second Bozell column on this matter.

Great point... love how you expose the hypocrisy of the whole movement.

Pure Evil...

What happened to Jesse Dirkhising was beyond evil. He was abducted and murdered by two perverted cockroaches.

The same MSM that supported and worshipped Obama purposely covered this story up simply because the cockroaches were gay, and did not want to alienate their audience. I want them destroyed, because they DO NOT serve the public.

Awake the sleeping giant...and that giant is WE THE PEOPLE!

He was killed from pent up rage

of the two gay men, a rage that had been boiling for a long time because straight America drove them into their darkness and self-loathing. Straight America held the boy down, taped him to the bed, gagged him just as surely as the two gay men who were driven to it by the stress of the stigma and vilification inflicted on them.

Hey, I think I have the makings of a good Law and Order script here. I'll get back to y'all after I get in touch with Richard Belzer.

Then How Come The Latest Episode Is Outraging Pro-Aborts?

Usually, I don't try to link to extraordinarily biased news sites, but I'll make this an exception just to prove my point:

"Law & Order" Abortion Episode Outrages Pro-Abortion Groups"; http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/oct/09102603.html

By James Tillman

WASHINGTON, DC, October 26, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- Last Friday's episode of Law & Order on NBC, entitled "Dignity," has infuriated pro-abortionists while pleasantly surprising pro-lifers with an unexpectedly even-handed treatment of the issue of abortion.

Ripping its plot from recent headlines, "Dignity" begins with the murder of late-term abortionist Dr. Walter Benning (Matthew Boston) during a church service.  Although the episode has a disclaimer stating that the story is fictional, its initial outline closely matches the case of the late-term abortionist Dr. George Tiller, who was shot and killed in a church in Wichita, Kansas, on May 31st.

After the murderer, Wayne Grogan is captured and confesses to the crime, his defense attorney, Roger Jenkins, argues that the killing was justified because Grogan was acting in defense of someone else - namely, an unborn infant whom Benning was going to abort.

In the end Grogan is found guilty of the murder; but over the course of the episode a host of the arguments and issues surrounding abortion are covered in a manner unusually sympathetic to the pro-life cause.

As Dave Andrusko writes on the NRLC's website: "What makes the Law & Order episode so riveting is that virtually every pro-life argument you knew you would never hear on a network program is a part of 'Dignity.'"

"More important, it occurred to me as I listened in utter astonishment that each of these observations could have been presented in a way that was artificial, forced, or (as so often is the case with network portraits of pro-lifers) something that you would expect from an idiot. None of that was the case. These were real flesh-and-blood people, not caricatures."

Early in the episode, for instance, Detectives Lupo and Bernard argue with each other over abortion.  Lupo says that forcing an 11-year old rape victim to give birth is unthinkable, to which Bernard responds: "You got it backwards, man! The horrible thing is the rape! Not the bringing of a life into the world."

He continues by pointing out that he himself was born to an unwed mother, and that Lupo very nearly had another partner.

Similarly, when Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Cutter argues with District Attorney Jack McCoy about whether they should give Grogan a plea bargain, Cutter compares abortion to slavery and Grogan to John Brown.  He continues by arguing that Roe v. Wade conformed but to the science of its day, and that it deserves another look.

When witnesses begin to take the stand, however, the contrast between the pro-abortion and pro-life position only grows.

One abortionist, called as witness for the prosecution, says that the life of the disabled child Benning was going to abort would be without dignity.  He continues to say that even if politicians make abortion illegal and "bow to the hypocrites and fools" of the pro-life movement, he would continue to perform abortions despite the law.

Perhaps the most surprising issue the episode raised is the connection of abortion with infanticide.  Over the course of the case, the defense, desiring to show that Benning was a murderer, calls a witness to testify how a breathing, born-alive infant was killed by Dr. Benning.

"The boy was crying a little cry, moving his arms and legs," she says.  "Dr. Benning cut the umbilical cord; then he took the surgical scissors and inserted it into the base of the baby's skull."

Several similarly gruesome, real-life cases of infanticide involving abortionists have occurred in recent years. In one case that drives close to home, an abortionist working for George Tiller, Shelley Sella, was accused of stabbing a born-alive infant in the ribcage until the baby died. In addition, former nurse turned pro-life activist Jill Stanek has also related that while working at a hospital in Illinois, numerous babies born alive after failed abortions were simply left to die in the "soiled utility room."

Pro-abortion groups have responded to the Law & Order episode with outrage that the show would feature an abortionist modeled on Dr. Tiller in a less than beatific light.

Charlotte Taft writes that "NBC cannot hide behind the words" by stating that the story is fictitious.  For the media to make a negative story so blatantly ripped off the death of "St. George," as she dubs Tiller, is to murder him again.  "There is no balance here," she says.

Kate Harding complained on Salon.com that the episode features only two groups: "Anti-choicers, who believe fetuses' rights trump women's, and the pseudo-pro-choicers, who are conveniently persuaded to agree with them by the end of the episode."

Yes, just like the drunk

Yes, just like the drunk with 3 DUIs who kills someone in a car crash, it's someone else's fault. To blame us who are "straight" for their rage is nonsense. They where adults who should have know better. Anger is best used to create positive change, not vent it by murdering a 13 year old. I am not an advocate for the gay agenda, I am against the use of anger for evil. There is no excuse for this evil.  There was no excuse for Sheppard’s murder either, it was evil too.

Be careful here, folks...

We have plenty to be worried about with a radical, gay activist in charge of school safety.  We can find plenty of issues to be critical about.

We do not need to make the leap to assume, even in jest, that he would approve and joke about a 13 year old being raped and murdered... much less participate in the act.

That is the type of comments the other guys make.  Don't lower yourself to their standards.

Good observation.  We know Jennings is admittedly cavalier with his attitude towards older men having sex with underage boys, but there's no proof he favors raping boys.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

I knew the Media was biased

But I never knew it was to this extent.

This is totally sick and twisted, sure let's stay silent about the kid that was raped and humiliated to death. And by the way let's wrongly label the murders of the gay kid as Christians for effect.

And people wonder why I'm not that keen on journalism.

I rember reading about this

I was going to give an honest opinion, then I remebered they passed the "I hate free speech law"

Guess I better be quite, which is pretty much what it's all about isnt it?

I don't know what the point

I don't know what the point of this story is, except to say that the Sheppard got too much media attention.

The point is that when a

The point is that when a crime is committed against a gay person it recieves more attention than when a crime is committed against a straight person.

But the crime was committed

But the crime was committed on Shepard because he was gay. The other boy, as far as we know, was not killed because he was straight.

That Guy Getting Killed Has Nothing to Do With Gays.

Let me quote part of the article:

"This has nothing to do with gay people," he claimed, in complete disregard of the facts.

"In disregard of the facts"?

Am I supposed to believe that gay people pose a threat of murdering children and molesting them?  This has just as much to do with gay people as OJ Simpson or Roman Polanski has to do with straight people, which is to say, nothing.

Well, you're not very bright

According to this same person, Matthew Sheperd's murder had everything to do with Christian conservatives, but somehow, this crime had nothing to do with gay people, despite being perpetrated by gay people.

"'This has nothing to do with gay people,'" he claimed, in complete disregard of the facts."

You seem to have trouble with the localisation of this statement, so let me help you:

"This (case) has nothing to do with gay people," he claimed, in complete disregard of the facts (of this case).

Do you see the errors of your post yet? If not, attend a fifth grade reading comprehension class and get a damn clue.

(Ya know folks, I'm starting to doubt the intelligence of the left.)

Matthew-media had only one meme

Shepard was killed because he was gay. End of story. The rest consists of the grisly details the MSM did not restrain themselves from recounting.

But Elizabeth Vargas on 20/20 described a different story, with other memes to consider, including drugs, robbery, bisexual orientation, and others, in a report on ABC six years later.

New Details Emerge in Matthew Shepard Murder - ABC News

Score 1for the MSM, even if it came five years after the first trial.

Recently there was a

Recently there was a fundraising event by a gay organization  on a private property here in the suburbs of Sacramento.  Because the music was so loud it caught the attention of a neighbor who then saw a massive outdoor gay orgy.  He broke out his video camera and called the cops.  Here's the news story:

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/Best-Buns-Blowout-Bares-Bitterness.html

Why is it that I'm not surprised that this would happen?  Maybe because I've actually seen what happens at gay pride parades.

Re Sacramento

Is that Shemp Smith standing next to Andy Cooper?

I keep hearing that gay men

don't go after young boys.  Anybody want to explain this to the mother who doesn't want her Boy Scout son's Troop being led by a gay man?  There does not seem to be any comments about this group being pedophiles, ephebophiles, or any such thing.

This being said, these men murdered a young boy and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  This "hate crimes" crapola is a try to restrict "freedom of thought".  Anyone committing a hate crime should be charged, and tried, on their real crime, not on some trumped up social enginering concept.

Straight People Can Be Convicted Of Sodomy: Just Ask Polanski...

Well, I know he wasn't officially convicted, but the transcript from the girl he raped was pretty clear: Polanski, a straight man, sodomized her. Are you saying that sodomy is exclusively a homosexual crime that should be prosecuted even further than straight sodomy because the suspect committing it is homosexual? That's almost as bad as creating special rights for gay people. It should be treated equally under the law, in which case a man like Polanski, who happens to be straight and a pedophile, and these murderers, who happen to be gay, should be convicted equally under the same rule of law. How clear can that be?

You're right sticks

All three of these men should be hung by their balls and left to die.

"If the man, with the power, can't keep it under control...some heads are gonna roll." -Judas Priest

This is a non-story

It's not like it was rape-rape

Do you know what else came out in the early 90's??

A plan of attack by the homosexual community to force integration of their lifestyle onto the public. While you and I were busy raising families, they were busy devising a plan to force their lifestyle on society.

Two homosexuals, Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen wrote a book called "After the Ball - How America will conquer its fear and hatred of Gays in the 90s" (you can read a portion of it here: http://www.article8....). This book became a blueprint for what we see happening in America today.

"Kirk is a researcher in neuropsychiatry. The book describes
his co-author Hunter Madsen as having received a doctorate in Politics
from Harvard in 1985 and an expert on public persuasion tactics and
social marketing, who has designed commercial advertising on Madison
Avenue and served as a consultant to gay media campaigns across the
country, and appears frequently on national media as an advocate for gay
rights."

Just so you know, the "hate crimes" legislation that is being attached to the defense bill (of all things) is one of the biggest threats to free speech.

Remember, don't listen to what they "say". Watch what they do. They claim this law (if passed) will protect homosexuals from violence, but in reality it is part of another attempt to silence opposition to their lifestyle.

Don't believe me? It's already happened in Canada, Sweden, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
