NPR "senior news analyst" Daniel Schorr recited the socialist sermon on Wednesday night’s All Things Considered: nationalized health care "would save many lives," and all that bother about providing taxpayer-subsidized abortions and health care for illegal aliens are tiresome "distractions" from the urgent need for more government. Schorr lamented:
Barring illegal from insurance benefits doesn't bar them from receiving treatment in a hospital emergency room. ERs have become the place of treatment of last resort for too many people here legally or illegally. T.R. Reid tells of a dramatic case in his book "The Healing of America." Nikki White lost her job and health insurance as a result of having a type of lupus. Because of her pre-existing condition, she couldn't get new health insurance. Eventually, she collapsed and was taken to the emergency room. Three doctors undertook to treat her until her condition stabilized. That involved six months in critical care and 25 surgical operations. Then she went home, still without insurance, and died at the age of 32. Her doctor, Amylyn Crawford, said: Nikki died of complications of the failing American health care system.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓It becomes clear that a universal system of health insurance would save many lives, and it might help to sustain hospitals whose emergency rooms are coming under increasing pressure as unemployment swells the rolls of Americans without insurance. Maybe our legislators should stop worrying about the scattering of illegals who may get unauthorized treatment and think of the millions who can't afford to get authorized treatment.
What Schorr didn't tell NPR listeners is that T.R. Reid, a longtime foreign correspondent for The Washington Post is such a thoroughgoing socialist that he removed his name with a harrumph from a PBS Frontline documentary this spring because it wasn't harshly biased enough against private health insurers.

That's just nonsense. Exactly what is "authorized" treatment that some can't afford? Just who "authorizes" treatments?
Yes, that is nonsense, MB

I am actually shocked he used the word "illegals", though. He should take a PC cue from our own Encino Johnny here and use the proper term - "undocumented immigrants."

Republicans see a backdoor move toward 'amnesty'
Mr. Obama added, "If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented (potential voters for me) people living and working in this country once and for all."
Republicans said that amounts to an amnesty, calling it a backdoor effort to make sure current illegal immigrants get health care.

Why the fuss...?
September 18, 2009 - 07:59 ET by P. AaronIt's simple. Why should we enslave ourselves for those that hitch-hike our Constitution?
Where's the compassion in that?
Giving medical benefits to strangers who do not share our values is not being charitable, that's a surrender of OUR right to exist.
Nationalization
September 18, 2009 - 08:14 ET by KC MulvilleThe current system could save many lives. If you nationalize it, it becomes a different system, and would no longer function in the same way. The change to the system might fix one problem at the expense of others.

I mean, yesterday, while almost no one was looking, he got half-way to snatching up the school loan system.
What will Comrade Chairman Obama go after next?
Will he move to complete the already-in-progress seizure of the banks?
Will he move to snatch the rest of the financial industry?
Will he move to take over the airlines?
Will he move to grab the private energy producers?
Will he seize the 10% of the mortgage industry that is still in private hands?
Will he move to nationalize agriculture?
Will he go after private retirement funds?
Will he have somebody in congress sneak an amendment into the back of a farm bill that gives the federal government control of our health care system?
Will he move to snatch up Ford?
What?

What finally happened with that; did they get caught and have to "recalibrate?" I wasn't looking at news much.
And I wouldn't think it ridiculous to presume "all of the above" are somewhere on the menu....

Some were asking whether or not Obama would sign, given that it was amended to cut off ACORN, too, but that isn't going to matter.
I am pretty sure they have already come up with a new name for ACORN, complete with a new logo/slogan and everything else, and are now having the stationary and signage printed up.
Once the heat is off say, a month or two down the road, and everybody is distracted by whatever chaos will be underway by then, Reid and Pelosi will have one of their charges sneak a funding amendment in the back of some obscure bill, say a declaration congratulating Hugo Chavez on his birthday or something, and it will soon be right back to business as usual.

September 18, 2009 - 09:52 ET by motherbeltUnder what pretense is he snatching up the school loan business?
Stafford loans have always been government territory, but what excuse is he making for taking over PLUS loans?
We have both, so I'm curious.
Also, we recently refinanced our home, and a couple of months later got a letter saying that our loan had been sold to Freddie Mac; who knows for what reason!
This is getting outrageous. What business does the federal government have buying up private enterprise?

September 18, 2009 - 11:06 ET by jon_torlinat least it's not supposed to. This can't be anymore legal than Putin meeting with GE. But hey, laws and rules can be changed! That's the magic word, change!

September 21, 2009 - 20:48 ET by R D HelmWhile the feds were/are heavily involved in Stafford, there were at least private sector lenders in the mix. Once Obama is through, there won't be any private sector lenders. Not for school loans, mortgages, or even cars.

Jack,
September 18, 2009 - 09:05 ET by R D HelmThey already have seized 90% of the mortgage industry as well, and I doubt the 10% that remains in private hands will last very long.
They ultimately intend to have the federal government select who does, or does not get loans for whatever, period.
It will be like, "So, you're a republican and you want to buy this gas-guzzling SUV, buy that house over here, and send your kid to that Christian college over there. Sorry, no can do."
That is where we're headed if this BS isn't put down, and that very soon.
I am not sure a repulican takeover of congress is going to be much help, either. They controlled congress from 1994 to 2006, and didn't reverse any of the socialism that had been put into place prior, and even managed to add to it themselves.
I have no confidence they will be able to reverse any of this nonsense, especially since Obama will surely veto anything that might actully make it through.
I don't think most Americans really understand just how far Obama's little coup has actually progressed, and just how close he really is to pulling it off.
He's already half way there, as I see it.
We are essentially between a rock and a very hard place.

The problem with liberals on this issue is the same problem with liberals on every issue: they feel gub'mint is the central planning panacea for everything - despite decades of evidence to the contrary.
Instead of reasonable & controled tweeks to the existing system - eliminate state barriers to insurance choice (Pro-choice. Right, libs??), eliminate pre-existing condition restrictions, allow tax exempt medical savings plans, allow individual tax deductions for health insurance premiums (just like big business) - the libs get their nappies all soiled and ready to spend TRILLIONS because 10% of the people don't have insuranance.
And these nimrods wonder why the American people are upset.

Since When???
September 18, 2009 - 09:49 ET by Secret ConservativeSince when have hospital emergency rooms become the treatment center of LAST resort for illegals? If the ER at our local hospital (suburban Atlanta) is any indication, the ER is the treatment center of FIRST resort for illegals. So much so that paying customers have to wait for HOURS for service - and are often turned away because their emergency isn't urgent enough. Suffering from an orthopedic problem, I was recently turned away and told to get an appointment with an orthopedist, since my problem was not "life threatening." I looked around the waiting room, filled with - let's face it - Mexicans - and asked, "Do these people all have life-threatening issues?" The triage nurse just rolled her eyes and said, "Really. Just call an orthopedist and get an appointment. Otherwise you'll be here all day."

September 18, 2009 - 16:18 ET by mattmYou're right - nationalized health care is a death sentence. Care will be rationed. That's a fact. That means people will not get the care they need. There will be no incentive for research and innovation. There will be no more Mayo Clinics, Medtronics or any other improvements. The opposite will be the case: Slow decay.
Think of how many millions have already died because of "liberal" policy. Environmentalism has lead to millions of malaria deaths and has kept third-world countries in the poverty-stricken state they are in. Their appeasement mentaility has emboldened tyrants and conquerers. Abortion has killed millions. And if they get their socialist medicine, even more will die at their hands.
