Wanda Sykes Has Zero Regrets for Calling Limbaugh a Terrorist, Wishing Him Kidney Failure

Comedian Wanda Sykes is back in Washington this weekend for two shows at the Warner Theatre. Randy Shulman of the local gay magazine Metro Weekly interviewed her and found not one iota of regret for calling Rush Limbaugh a terrorist and wishing his kidneys would fail at this spring’s White House Correspondents Dinner. Instead, she complained that people who loved the harsh jokes were hypocrites for laughing then and disapproving later:

METRO WEEKLY: Do you ever worry about stepping out of bounds, about doing a joke that’s gone too far?

SYKES: I don’t worry about it. My barometer is that I don’t want to be mean spirited – just to attack someone for the sake of doing it. If you started it, I have a right to go after you. If you did something, I can go after you. But I want it to be about what you did and not just a personal attack or something.

MW: Which is where Rush Limbaugh comes in. You leveled several vicious – and I would agree in his case completely earned – jokes in his direction at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. You got some flak in the press for it. Looking back, do you regret saying those tings about Limbaugh?

SYKES: Not at all.

MW: Do you feel the resulting flak was justified in any way?

SYKES: I missed the flak because I wasn’t even watching television over the next few days. We’d just got back home and I was focused on the babies. I heard there was a lot of flak. [Are we really supposed to believe this line?]

But I wouldn’t change anything. I just know a lot of people were in the room, and they were all laughing, so I think there’s a little hypocrisy there – people covering their ass.

This exchange suggests that Metro Weekly's headline was wrong: "For Goodness Sykes." There was no goodness in those jokes.

I agree. Humor and sarcasm and parody are fine, and Rush uses those all the time. But Sykes and her ilk dont leave it at that. It's all about the personal attack with them. They attack personally because they have no argument to attack on issues. Liberals are shallow people.

Rush debates ideas. He makes fun of people's voices, appearance, or lifestyles. But he doesn't "wish" anything on anyone. Other than, maybe, that they'd just shut up.

I'd like to know the source all this so-called "flack" that Sykes received for trashing Limbaugh. The whole interview seems more like a stealth excuse by a leftist reporter to continue stirring the pot. Obama's been on the ropes lately and Rush has been leading the charge against him on talk radio. This is just another feeble attempt at a media smack-down of Rush. I saw that speech by Sykes back in early May and everyone in attendance was laughing pretty hard -- including Obama himself. Sykes even backhandedly accused Hannity of being a racist and wished Olbermann would waterboard him -- to which there were many muted and not-so-muted laughs and applause. As you might expect, Olbermann was in tears -- not because of the joke but rather someone actually mentioned him by name in public.

This was NOT a comedy routine by Sykes - this was an ugly, hate-inspired speech sprinkled with racial provocation. I'd like to know the actual names of those in the mainstream media who gave her this flack that Shulman speaks of --- I believe they don't really exist. In fact they all agree with and support her.

I agree. Though I do reserve the right to express ill will and hope for the death of convicted violent criminals and terrorists. Not good for the soul, but folks have a right to live their lives in peace, and those that take that away have no right to their own.

As for politics, the furthest I'd go (unless out and out oppression took place) is getting voted out of office and beyond that, exile.

I have regrets for ever thinking Wanda Sykes had any talent. She was in a role where the idea was to poke fun at the President in a roast-style, and she didn't do that. Instead she took shots at someone who was not even there. For that reason her performance was very cowardly and chicken-hearted. The best comics test the limits of their targets and have no sacred cows, but instead Wanda went off the program and attacked the easy target just as Leno and Letterman would.

She made jokes about Rush Limbaugh; how daring of her!
