MSNBC's First Read (with the name of NBC White House reporter Chuck Todd first on the joint byline) huffed and puffed on Wednesday that Glenn Beck should be fired by Fox News for suggesting President Obama is a racist. Todd & Co. lament that a "Howard Beale" like Beck would spoil the cable airwaves with these vile attacks on the president. "What's most amazing about this episode is that what Beck said isn't a fireable or even a SUSPENDABLE offense by his bosses."
Left unaddressed: the Howard Beales who make a living with outrageous rants on MSNBC, starting with Keith Olbermann. Also left unaddressed: whether it's a good idea for a network White House reporter to look so emotionally involved in defending the president he's supposed to be covering. Here's how it started:
The White House doesn't want to give Glenn Beck a bigger platform or extra oxygen -- especially regarding his remark yesterday that the president has "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture" -- so they won't comment, even off record. Beck, after all, is a radio DJ who somehow ended up getting a national platform to give his opinion on politics. What's most amazing about this episode is that what Beck said isn't a fireable or even a SUSPENDABLE offense by his bosses. There was a time when outrageous rants like this would actually cost the ranters their jobs. But not anymore; if anything, it's now encouraged. And all of this could turn ACTUAL journalists into the next Howard Beales.
Todd and his colleagues at MSNBC hate ranting talk-show hosts who aren't "real" journalists -- like Olbermann, who was a sports anchor. We won't even remember Don Imus, who was also a talk radio jock, even when he worked at MSNBC.
It's getting nuts that the folks who are creating the perception of an ideological/polarized media world are people who have never really spent their lives being journalists. Whether it's former political consultants-turned-TV execs or former radio DJs, or former California socialites, the folks helping to accelerate the public's perception of the media off a cliff made their livings trying to do other things.
Are Todd and his colleagues also aware they're slapping the memory of Tim Russert as they rail away at "former political consultants turned TV execs"?

July 30, 2009 - 12:02 ET by SickofLibsHow is calling a president a racist worse than calling a president a mass murderer... you know, like Olbermann has based his whole career on?
Todd has had his reasonable moments in the past year, but he just showed his true colors here. He's now on the bottom of the slimepit with the rest of his whacked-out MSNBC brethren.
not only that
July 30, 2009 - 12:16 ET by sarainitalybut that f*ckwit called him facist over and over again, but went ballistic when someone said that about obama....
You know, I really wish the news would quit focusing on EACH other, and report the friggin news! I come here for the he said/she said but I don't want the news channels to constantly be engaged in pointing fingers. They are all idiots - they need to just report the news, and not worry about what FOX is doing all the time. Jealous much?
Why the hell does Todd or msnbc care that Beck is calling Obama a racist. Especially when Obama seems to be! Report the news, and ignore them. They can't stand it because FOX is killing them in ratings.
Cal Thomas made a great point about that
July 30, 2009 - 12:58 ET by lsudolemiteHe talked last weekend about how in the old days with only a few networks, they truly had independent news divisions. They didn't have to worry about getting and keeping ratings since the news was subsidized by the other networks' sports and entertainment divisions. So they were free to report the actual news without worrying about ratings or getting axed by the networks.
Today with a million 24 hour cable and internet news outlets, that notion of financial independence is out the window. Now the news outlets can't just report the news but also has to serve as entertainment since they are solely responsible for generating ratings. Hence the public spats like this and the Babe Brigade at Fox News (which I'm not really opposed to by the way :) )
Lucky enough
July 30, 2009 - 13:48 ET by jdlybrandI'm lucky enough to have lived when the local news came on at six PM and "The Huntley Brinkley Report" followed. That was about it for news. Funny how the world kept turning anyway.

July 30, 2009 - 12:21 ET by HockeyKidSo Upchuck Todd needs to look in the mirror, yes? This from his Wikipedia entry:
"Before coming to the world of political reporting and analysis, Todd
earned practical political experience on initiative campaigns in
Florida and various national campaigns based in Washington, D.C.[6] While in college, Todd worked for the 1992 presidential campaign of Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and later started part time at The Hotline."
According to the same article, he majored in poli-sci and minored in music, but finished a degree IN NEITHER.
So Upchuck's exactly the kind of untrained, nonjournalist political hack he accuses Beck of being. But Beck is a commentator, not a journalist--he's never claimed to be a journalist. Upchuck, on the other hand, is NBC's Chief White House Correspondent--he's the one who's supposed to be a journalist.

July 30, 2009 - 13:24 ET by 24enakWhen I seen the title and the picture of this article I thought that there would be something that KO ranted about to show the hypocracy, though I don't think KO ever said something to the degree that President Bush is a racist, or that he had a deep seeded hatered for black people. If he did then there would be an outrage by conservatives calling for KO head. Glenn Beck would probaly cry about.
But there wasn't any of that, not one example where KO crossed the line like Beck had. What Beck said was moronic, and the next day on his radio show he even stuck by his words that the president is a racist. http://www.hulu.com/watch/86223/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-so-you-think-you-can-douche#s-p1-st-i1
I remeber a couple of years ago when Kanye West said on live tv that "George Bush doesn't like black people" the right wing was outraged. Kanye is just a rapper Glenn Beck is an actual political talking head, that is his job, talking politics is not what Kanye does for a living.
The comment "Todd and his colleagues at MSNBC hate ranting talk-show hosts who aren't "real" journalists -- like Olbermann, who was a sports anchor." I'm guessing was supposed to be sarcastic, but as Rush Limbaugh knows being a sports anchor isn't as easy as it seems, and wasn't that how Sarah Palin started out and wanted to be in life?

But even Mr. Bush's harshest critics had, until this week, credited him with a MODICUM of human decency -- a decency utterly BELIED by the tape you are presently to see, a tape at which, at a White House press conference, Mr. Bush abruptly launches into a stream of ugly racist invective that would embarrass even David Duke!

But I didn't see it. Olbermann compared Bush to a anti-slavery movement in the civil war, like when Beck and other FNCers compare what Obama is doing to Nazi's, Communists, Marxist, tyrannies, and other ridiculous rants.
How many consevatives have linked Obama to domestic terrorism and bill ayers. Again unless I skimmed over it I didn't see where KO directly said "Bush is a racist."

July 30, 2009 - 15:21 ET by 24enakWell since you said so, I guess it is true. But I was saying that I don't think KO ever said that Bush was racist or had a deep seeded hatred for black people, like Beck said about Obama.
Your statement would be stronger with some proof like some quotes where KO said Bush was a racist. Disagreeing with a president on policy or issues I don't have a problem with but calling him a racist is over the line, unsupported, false, and just plain ignorant.
Enak, Olbermann is indefensible
July 30, 2009 - 15:42 ET by SickofLibsAnd, sorry, Obama has demonstrated that he in fact has racist viewpoints on virtually everything he touches, from his early involvement with ACORN to the present day. Stating that does not mean anyone thinks he is going to go out lynching white people or put on a black pointed hood.
And there is no one here that is going to accept your ludicrous claim that Beck is worse than Olbermann, who has made a career out of calling Bush everything in the book including mass murderer - while he was our sitting president. But only Fox pundits "inflame."
Calling someone a murderer is way worse than calling someone a racist. If you don't agree, you have more than a few screws loose.

Why Beck Resonates
July 30, 2009 - 13:43 ET by pcantidoteBeck at 5PM beats Olbermann at 8PM every day and it drives the libs mad. Accordingly they resort to shameful attacks rather than introspection. What the don't understand is the Beck is successful for precisely the reasons they are trying to attack him. He was not educated at elitist schools. He does not have a background in journalism. But he is entertaining and thought provoking at the same time, and I think that combination is a direct result of his unique background. Compare that to Olbermann's 60 minute hate filled diatribe. It doesn't hurt that Beck actually understands the Constituion and our founding principles. For me, that compares favorably to the socialist talking point parrots that litter the other shows. Beck is an ordinary and admittedly flawed guy. That is refreshing when juxtaposed next to the seemingly never ending cast of elitist hacks.
Oh yeah, and Obama IS a racist. The likes of Todd and Olbermann cannot even wrap their minds around the notion of a black person being racist. Their peabrains might explode if they think about it too hard. We elected a militant black activist with a touch of polish, and Beck is doing good work to expose him for what he really is.

Barack Obama raising food prices
July 30, 2009 - 20:51 ET by Retired GeekBarack Obama has raised concern about the high price of Arugula.
The Barack Obama Administration set forth an 'Obama Policy', to stop water for irrigation in the most arable 100,000 square miles of food production on Planet Earth in California.
This cost hundreds of thousands of jobs and is predicted to bankrupt thousands of farmers.
This Barack Obama policy, will cause a much higher 'Job Loss', as transporters and processors have less and less to transport and process.
Food prices will begin to 'Sky Rocket' when there is less food to feed Americans.
Barack Obama how will this increase new jobs?
Barack Obama how will this lower the price of Arugula and other food products?
Barack Obama do you know what you are doing?
Does my statement make me a Radical?
July 30, 2009 - 20:54 ET by Retired GeekLiberals have told me repeatedly, that my statement that 'Every legal American Citizen, should have the same 'Rights and Protections' granted by the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights - no more - no less', is not only incoherent, confusing and impossible for them to understand, but that my statement makes me a 'Radical' and shows my lack of compassion, understanding and intellect.
If the goal of American Citizens is to stop 'Racism' and other practices that cause division among us instead of unity, how else can that goal be reached?
America was founded by the concept of a limited Democracy or ‘Constitutional Republic’ which is ruled by law, rather than a ‘Pure Democracy’ or mob rule by whatever Party that happens to be in power or control.
Analogous to a ‘Pure Democracy’ would be a lynching, all involved has a vote – even the one being lynched, but the mob rules by majority and not by law.
Past bad behavior and conduct shouldn’t be answered by more bad behavior and conduct.
Until the American Citizens demand equal treatment and protection under law for everyone, American Citizens will always be victims of exploitation and unfair and unequal treatment, by those who oppose Individual rights that bring equality to all Citizens.
Those who categorize any race as being the root cause of problems, black or white etc., are simply ‘Collectivists’ who refuse to judge each Citizen by their Character instead of judging them as a ‘Collectivist Group’ – this includes any Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Liberal, Libertarian or any other political persuasion.
I say shame on any Racist and those who perpetuate Racism and that includes everyone, even the President of the United States or the janitor at McDonalds.
Beck is a traditionalist,
July 31, 2009 - 07:31 ET by nadadhimmiBeck is a traditionalist, not a GOP or Dem. Beck's argument is actually with the Oligarchy. Beck and Savage are the only media "speaking truth to power". They will also be the 1st to be silenced by the Oligarchs, of BOTH parties.

Well he doesn't bore the pants off of people, and he isn't a metrosexual or drama queen....note to MSNBC retrosexuals in metrosexuals out.
What would the world be like if metrosexuals ruled the world - pretty much like we are experiencing right now.
