On Friday night’s Hardball, guest host Lawrence O’Donnell enthusiastically promoted HBO’s new, glowing Ted Kennedy documentary.
He began by declaring "There‘s so much ground to cover. We don‘t have enough time for this. And I want to show the people out there, people under 60, who don‘t know the early Ted Kennedy, don‘t remember the early Ted Kennedy, I want to show what you have got in this movie." But O’Donnell’s interview completely left out the biggest scandal of "the early Ted Kennedy" – the death of Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick.
This seemed especially odd as O’Donnell recounted with filmmaker Caroline Waterlow how Richard Nixon was obsessed with Ted Kennedy:
O'DONNELL: Imagine that. Here you are, a senator. You have a president of the United States obsessing all day, is there something we can hang on him. Is there something we can accuse him of?
WATERLOW: With all—to think of Teddy, with all the things he was dealing with politically and within his family and all of the losses he has suffered, he was also—
O'DONNELL: He lost his oldest brother in World War II. He then has his remaining oldest brother assassinated November 22nd, 1963, as president of the United States. His then—his remaining oldest brother is assassinated while running for president in 1968. And at this point, having lived through all of that, here we are in 1972 and Nixon is trying to figure out how to make this guy‘s life worse.
WATERLOW: Yes.
O'DONNELL: But he perseveres. He keeps going. And he eventually himself wants to run for the presidency.
WATERLOW: Yes. That was something that I also had not fully appreciated going into this project, that from about ‘68 right after Bobby‘s death, people are talking to him about running for president. And there was an effort to draft him in ‘68 to take Bobby‘s place, and really for—yes, up until 1980 or ‘79 when he finally decides he is going to run for president president, this is a question that‘s hanging over him and it‘s something people are asking him about that whole time.
O'DONNELL: When you look at that early Senate career of Ted Kennedy, leading up prior to running for president in the ‘80s, it‘s hard to find the easy year for Teddy. Early on as senator, he had a plane crash, a small plane goes down in western Massachusetts. He‘s in the plane. He injuries his back. He‘s never going to be able to walk the same way again for the rest of his life.
One of the things I think about when I watch him in front of these audiences like last summer is the young kids don‘t understand what the older people in that convention hall—what‘s happened to them when they‘re crying listening to Ted Kennedy. They don‘t know the emotional base of the relationship that he has with those voters.
Let‘s take a look at Ted Kennedy giving what I believe was the most public eloquent public eulogy ever given. It was his eulogy of his brother, Robert Kennedy.
T. KENNEDY: My brother need not be idealized or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life. To be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, who saw suffering and tried to heal it, who saw war and tried to stop it.
O'DONNELL: Not easy to watch.
WATERLOW: No, it‘s incredibly emotional moment, and really we tried very hard in this film—it‘s entirely archival interviews and footage. We tried to let the footage speak for itself. You can see the emotion and you can see Teddy just by watching him and letting it play.
It's not like the HBO film leaves Chappaquiddick out, which it shouldn't, because it was a continuing obstacle to Kennedy's White House dreams. But MSNBC feels comfortable airbrushing it out of their warm, fuzzy historical memories.
Even so, HBO isn't playing hardball, as seen in its promotional copy: "Through the years, Teddy's reputation as a liberal icon fighting for the rights of the underprivileged has been balanced by his ascension to family patriarch, where he has brought counsel, wisdom and love to a new generation of civic-minded Kennedys."

Curse of the Kennedy's
July 14, 2009 - 10:22 ET by ricklailI heard someone comment that because of the largeness of the family there were more opportunities for tragedy.
My grandfather had 15 brothers and sisters. He did die young but that was the result of TB which I was told came from being gas during WWI. None of the 15 died due to a tragedy. They didn't drown anybody in a creek. They were all productive members of society. They raised kids and grandkids to be the same. Of all the decents of John Sidney and Emma Sherrill Abernathy I can't think of but two grandsons, Bobby Abernathy and Paul Lawing, Jr, that died tragically. Both were killed in Vietnam.
So don't hand me this crap about a big family. I believe there is a curse on the Kennedys and it comes from there dad being a bootlegger.

→ Kennedy Curse?
July 14, 2009 - 10:46 ET by Cool ArrowJoe Jr. died in WWII. Hardly an event reserved for the rich and famous alone.
Joe Sr. bought a Presidential election from Mayor Daley in Chicago, for his son JFK. I doubt Senator JFK would have been assassinated.
Bobby? I don't know, except he followed on the coattails of an ill-gotten boon.
It's my belief that America suffered the loss of 58,000 servicemen as a result of Kennedy power greed. Now that's a curse!
Of course we've all taken off in our private planes, lacking the proper training to attempt night flying, haven't we?
And all of us have engaged in playing football while downhill skiing, haven't we?
On a more somber note, there can't be too many families in America that haven't suffered extreme tragedy resultant of drunken driving.
Mary Jo WHO?
July 14, 2009 - 11:17 ET by GalvanicYou know . . . Mary Jo . . . the woman who stalked poor Teddy. Her refusal to escape with the Senator from the submerged automobile at Chappaquiddick and her subsequent death, derailed St. Teddy's ascension to the White House, as she probably had intended.
You see, Teddy was faithful to his alcoholic wife Joan (and we all know how abusive alcoholics can be), and told Mary Jo that he could give her a ride but that's all, because as he would never stray from his marital obligations to his wife.
Perhaps they shopuld look
July 14, 2009 - 08:14 ET by MidAmericaPerhaps they shopuld look into the time when teddy thought he should institute his own foreign policy while being only a senator.
Kengor: It was a May 14, 1983 letter from the head of the KGB, Viktor Chebrikov, to the head of the USSR, the odious Yuri Andropov, with the highest level of classification. Chebrikov relayed to Andropov an offer from Senator Ted Kennedy, presented by Kennedy’s old friend and law-school buddy, John Tunney, a former Democratic senator from California, to reach out to the Soviet leadership at the height of a very hot time in the Cold War. According to Chebrikov, Kennedy was deeply troubled by the deteriorating relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, which he believed was bringing us perilously close to nuclear confrontation. Kennedy, according to Chebrikov, blamed this situation not on the Soviet leadership but on the American president---Ronald Reagan. Not only was the USSR not to blame, but, said Chebrikov, Kennedy was, quite the contrary, “very impressed” with Andropov.
That's a Democratic trait.

Kennedy impressed with Andropov
July 14, 2009 - 16:02 ET by NotFondOfLibsIn case some Americans don't know, Yuri Andropov was probably complicit in the plot that may have been developed by Mikhail Suslov to have a Russian submarine shoot a nuclear missile at Pearl Harbor in March, 1968. The idea of the plot was to put the blame on Red China which had a submarine of the same type the Soviet Union had. Their goal was to cause a war between the U.S. and Red China. Fortunately, the missile blew up inside the submarine, the K-129 and sunk 16,000 feet in the Pacific. Andropov was head of the KGB and Suslov was the Russian Communist Party ideologue. For Kennedy to go over the head of the President of the United States was contemptible and Kennedy should have been called upon to resign for his actions.

July 14, 2009 - 11:11 ET by RowaneHate to put it so bluntly but Kennedy says bad things about the intelligence of Massachusetts voters. I mean, what do they find so impelling about this nimrod? July 14, 2009 - 11:29 ET by GalvanicThough the expectations for Teddy -- youngest of the four Kennedy brothers -- were never high as long as one of the other three was alive, those who bought into Arthur Schlessinger's Camelot myth placed their remaining hopes in ne'er-do-well Ted. Chappaquiddick ended his shot at the White House (or so his fans believe), but the voters of Massachusetts fan the burning embers of Camelot's fading memory and lost opportunity everytime they reelect this little rich boy.

John Farrar,

due to suffocation. No autopsy was performed. We can never know for certain the

I've read a lot about this also...this is strictly my own opinion from my own deductions, but the Kennedy's of Camelot paid off the parents big time, because there was more there, and she was pregnant.
I imagine that has a lot to do with why we have never seen nor heard a peep out of them since.

July 14, 2009 - 12:43 ET by bigtimerOh give me a break...Mary Jo and Chappaquiddick is never going to go away...it will be known, always, no matter what the msm tries to do to tamp it down, omit it etc....reconstruction history isn't going to work when it comes the the filth Kennedy got away with, and still does, always will regarding the msm...we all know how it will be when the Lyin' of the Senate meets his maker when it comes to the msm, it will be a time to take a vacation from the tv screen for sure, we thought Jackson and Di was repetitious, that carried on for days and days, years with the anniversaries of the death of Di....we ain't seen nothing yet!

In a larger cosmic sense
July 14, 2009 - 12:49 ET by Lord ErondKennedy is the epitome of modern liberalism. It is moral relativism at its finest. I have no doubt that Ted has helped some during his long and mostly useless drunk life but it was in all likelihood coincidental with his own self interest. So he uses that to excuse the horrible crime he committed. One has to just look at this festering pile of sewage to see how much he's had to salve his psychological wounds with alcohol.
In as much as Bill Klinton could not be honest even when he was caught with the 'smoking gun' liberals will never admit wrong if they pay a price for it. They see morals and ethics as 'quaint' and an antiquated notion of religion that they don't subscribe to. Kennedy embodies this godless philosophy and attitude completely.
We are losing nothing when this corpulent fat bag shuffles off this mortal coil.

July 14, 2009 - 13:14 ET by pitter43You mean to tell me that he forgot the single most important fact about drunkin Ted? That he's a murderer whose family money kept him from prison, when he actually deserves to visit old sparkey? Maybe I better call him and remind him.

July 14, 2009 - 13:39 ET by bigtimerHowdy Kat...
I've been back and fourth on term limits, I wished it were only three years myself, just seems no matter what these people will still be reelected, after-all they are term-limited now, albeit 6 yrs, but to me it's up to the voters to become informed, and they never do...let alone all the cheating that they get away with.

I see what you mean, but
July 14, 2009 - 13:51 ET by Kat Outta the BagI see what you mean, but unfortunately the fools in MA who keep this joker in business make it difficult for the rest of us. Kennedy has been in the Senate since before I was even born...there's just no logic to that.
On a funny note, I recall a comedian (can't remember who) once saying that Ted is to the Kennedy family what Fredo was to the Corleone family. LOL
Re Fredo
July 14, 2009 - 14:37 ET by slickwillie2001That's funny. You could also make the more serious case that the Kennedy's Fredo was Rosemary.

July 14, 2009 - 14:41 ET by Kat Outta the BagPoor Rosemary...she was a little bit slow so Daddy lobotomized her and made her a vegetable. Teddy being a male child is probably the only thing that stopped him from meeting the same fate.

July 14, 2009 - 14:49 ET by bigtimerYep, she was one of the pretty Kennedy gals too...but seemed to be a problem with men/sex for the family.
I've read a lot during my life about the Kennedy Family...and of course this too...it was sad all the way around.

Rosemary keep a
July 14, 2009 - 17:33 ET by stratmanRosemary keep a diary/journal and had what I would consider above average writing skills. Based on these writings, I don't think Rosemary was intellectually challenged.
Papa Joe was a SOB, plain and simple. He also was probably at the end of his rope with what he considered Rosemary's labile emotional behavior. She was not controllable, and, given the "perfect" picture his other more malleable children presented, Joe Sr. decided, unilaterally, without true discussion with his wife, to lobotomize daughter Rosemary. Ego, bravado, a desire to do a "proper" job for the influential Joe Sr., and an inexact science combined in the lobotomist and lead to Rosemary being permenantly harmed.
I don't believe Joe would have done the same to a son given the greater latitude males enjoyed in Society and the favor he gave to his sons over his daughters, IMO.
→ Rosemary Kennedy
July 14, 2009 - 17:39 ET by Cool ArrowHaving witnessed the lengths Joe Sr. would go to bring family members in line with his own way of thinking, Teddy was heard to have sworn:
And so it came to pass that Teddy Kennedy did follow his father's example all the days of his life.
Sorry, I couldn't pass that one up.
Ted Kennedy is the same today
July 14, 2009 - 13:38 ET by IamTinmanTed Kennedy is the same today as he was in his earlier years, an arrogant little prick!
He is no one to look up to despite all the revised history.
The death of Mary Jo Kopechne displayed the real Ted Kennedy. He left a girl to die while running away desperate to stay out of jail and save his political career.
Why, Tinman, I'm Surprised
July 14, 2009 - 16:34 ET by DoktorFrankenThat you should lie about a Senator like that. He is definitely NOT a ''an arrogant little prick''. He is, as anyone with eyes can see,
an arrogant Bloated, Fat-assed prick.
There. Fixed it for ya. Nothing ''little'' about him except perhaps . . .
;-)
I just Googled Mary Jo
July 14, 2009 - 13:38 ET by Kat Outta the BagI just Googled Mary Jo Kopechne's name and found that this coming Saturday -- July 18 -- will be the 40th anniversary of her death. Talk about timing!

Timing indeed, somebody here mentioned the anniversary of her death too a few days back now.

For those too young to
July 14, 2009 - 14:01 ET by danboFor those too young to remember. We have a man of power who leaves a party, giving a woman a ride.
Instead of following the signs on the only paved road on the island; instead of turning left he turns right onto a dirt road.
About a mile later he drives off a bridge. He claims he tried to rescue her.
There were several houses nearby. He failed to go to these for help or to call the police.
Instead he walk/runs about a mile and a half back to the party to discuss the situation with friends.
He still fails to call the police, and then supposedly with his friends tries a few times to rescue the woman again. He then has his friends take him back to the ferry landing. Jumps in and swims back to Shiretown.
About 2:00 or 2:30 AM he approached the Inn manager and complains about nosy guests. At 7:45 he was approached by his friends and according to one of them they were to say Mary Joe was driving.
My understanding. Only after fishemen see and report the overturned car, does he report the incident.
Neglegent homicide? According to one appologist, negligent homicide incolves speeds of 55-60 mph. The dirt road, ruled that out.
DUI? Can't prove it. He didn't show up till many hours later.
Subordination of purjuy? According to the appoloigist, Kennedy had lawyer client privlige with the involved.
Purjury? Again according to appologist, you have to "prove" knowingly giving false testomony, not just being wrong or ignorant.
But this is all unimportant. We have a Republican who asked his wifes permission to visit his other honey. We have to go over the republican again and again. And forget about poor Mary Joe. It was a accident. Ted's a great man.

July 14, 2009 - 17:18 ET by stratmanI wonder if the Teddy bio-(myo)pic will discuss how he was against abortion before he was for abortion, gratis Papa Joe's manipulations and some clergy and professors finding a myth in one and a half days that wiped out centuries of Christian theology.
Kennedy men do know how to whore around, whether it be women, votes or money.
They do seem to have awful luck with cars, though.
the Kennedy clan history
July 14, 2009 - 18:02 ET by bknownstPop Kennedy was a good friend to a couple of histoy's most famous mass murderers. Do the names Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin ring any bells? That pair of Kennedy pals killed between 30 and 40 million people I believe. Joe Kennedy was such a close friend of Stalin's that Teddy and his brothers called Stalin "uncle Joe" growing up.
Mary Jo's death
July 15, 2009 - 01:30 ET by wingnut55I always wondered just how much money the Kennedy clan gave her parents to keep it out of the courts. I, also, wondered if she was pregnant . What did the autopsy show.
