CNN Anchor: 'Elitist' to Disdain Amount of Coverage of Jacko, the 'Accidental Civil Rights Leader'

CNN daytime anchor Don Lemon appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources on Sunday to come strongly to the defense of Michael Jackson, whom he saluted twice as an "accidental civil rights leader." Lemon charged that anyone who thinks the Jackson story is overdone is "elitist," and when Kurtz suggested the "civil rights leader" might have been a child molester, Lemon quickly asserted that it was never proven in court and "if you talk to people who were involved in those cases, they don't believe that he did it."

Kurtz invited in Lemon, former Washington Post and New York Times entertainment reporter Sharon Waxman, and Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik. All three thought the Jackson story was not overcovered. (Kurtz claimed on Twitter it was "hard to find a critic" of the overkill on the holiday weekend.)

Lemon suggested there wasn’t much criticism of the overcoverage of Princess Diana’s death (what country was he living in back then?), implying maybe because she was white:

HOWARD KURTZ: Don't you feel deep down that this is overdoing it?

DON LEMON, CNN ANCHOR: No, I don't feel it's overdoing it. And I don't -- and when I hear people say that, I have to be very honest with you, Howie, I think it's elitist. I don't remember -- I'm sure there was some criticism when there was the coverage of Princess Diana's death, but I don't think that there was this sort of criticism that we're having with Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson is an accidental civil rights leader, an accidental pioneer. He broke ground and barriers in so many different realms in artistry, in pictures, in movies, in music, you name it. So, no, I don't think it's overkill.

KURTZ: Okay. He did all of those things. He also was accused of child molestation, and was a seriously weird person. But he has been dead for more than a week and we are still going almost wall-to-wall.

LEMON: Well, he has been dead for more than a week, yes, but Michael Jackson twice -- well, once, I should say, he was acquitted of child molestation. The other time it was settled out of court.

KURTZ: Right.

LEMON: And if you talk to people who were involved in those cases, they don't believe that he did it. So let's put that aside.

Just minutes later, after putting aside all the suggestions of child molestation, Lemon improbably claimed, "I'm not a Michael Jackson apologist or sympathizer, what have you. I mean, I criticize him just as much as the next guy." That’s not true. Within seconds, Waxman and Lemon were both praising Jackson some more:

SHARON WAXMAN: We've spent a lot of years beating up on Michael Jackson, and I was -- I covered them both -- many aspects of beating up on him, business-wise, and the child molestation thing. And what I think we're realizing in all of this is, hey, he was actually a good -- a nice person. And I can't say how many people...

LEMON: A real person.

WAXMAN: ....I think there is a sense in the media of feeling badly, of regret in the Michael Jackson -- honestly, there is a little bit of that haze of expiation in, gee, he was kind of fantastic.

LEMON: If you look at Michael Jackson's story, the family story -- I know you have to go, but yes, this is a story that should be celebrated in more ways as we look at the train wreck aspect of it.

Below the surface of the train wreck, Jackson should be celebrated? What was Lemon trying to say?

I'm sorry Jackson died at

I'm sorry Jackson died at such a young age.

However, while his career - especially in the 1970s and 1980s - was wildly successful, he's not a "civil rights" anything.  At best, he's a cautionary tale of how not to live your life and how parents should not treat their talented children.

He was a man-child, someone who spent his adult years pursuing the childhood that was denied him.  Part of this blame lies with his parents, but most of it lies with him.

And why is it the media suddenly overlook his numerous accusations of child molestation?  Surely if Jackson were a Catholic priest and not a pop star, his guilt would be assumed the second the charges were leveled.  While Jackson was cleared of charges, the numerous accusations, and Jackson's own admittance of doing things mosts adults would never dream of doing with a child, are enough to give rational people pause.

Aut viam inveniam aut faciam

→ I can't say that

I can't say I'm sorry he died young.  The decision was not mine, and Jackson seems to have long ago ceded that choice to the drugs he loved more than life.

Maybe this sounds familiar.  A rich man filled his store house:  Luke 12:19 - 20

And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

I'd just as soon not question God on this one.

The sad thing here is the three children left behind.  Their "mother" can't decide if she wants to raise them or not (that should instantly disqualify her from the job, these aren't puppies you don't know if you want to keep, they're human beings).

Does anyone know what kind of upbringing they've had up until now?  They deserve our prayers.

→ Civil Rights Leader

Well, it really seems strange that a Black man would present Michael Jackson as a "civil rights leader"

Somehow I don't put Jacko the Molester in the same category as one great man who died in the service of mankind.

But Lemon evidently thinks the comparison fits just fine.

Think about it.  Jackson appropriates three white children for his personal life, and bequeaths them to the care of an elderly black woman for raising.  That's civil rights?

Isn't there an Al Jolson song in there somewhere?

The fact that Jackson

The fact that Jackson deliberately chose to raise three white kids tells me a lot about his opinion of his own race...his own 'blackness', if you will...not to mention the surgeries done to rid himself of his black features.  If blacks want to claim Jackson as their own they can, but it sure seems like he didn't want to be one of them himself.

Michael Jackson opened the

Michael Jackson opened the doors for the entire industry of black recording artists, being the FIRST one to have his music played on MTV.

After re-inventing the "music video" tens of thousands who came after him, reap the benefits of his trailblazing. This is what is meant by "accidental" civil rights leader. While I think the phrase may be a tad overblown, there can be no doubt that he opened certain doors much the same as the un-assuming Jackie Robinson did.  As for your snarling condescension concerning the allegations against him, scroll down to read my post on that to find out how little you actually know. Michael Jackson worked his entire adult life to "whiten up".  From the skin colorations to the tightening of the nose.  He married all white women.  He adopted all white children.  I am sorry, but I think Michael Jackson either suffered a serious mental problem or he thought their was something wrong with being black.  Not a civil rights leader to me.

This man was close to a billion dollars in net worth at his peak.  He could have done some pretty amazing things with that kind of money for the black community if he wanted but he didn't.

I am much more disgusted about the comments in this thread than I ever was by child molestation accusations by obvious opportunists.  Accusations are not the same as being guilty of something.  Is Bush a murderer because he was accused of being a murderer?  Maybe my husband is right about conservatives.  We want to be the judges instead of letting God judge.  Congratulations to the media.  They have successfully formed your opinion.

Huh!!!

Is Bush a murderer because he was accused of being a murderer?

I don't think that's an apt comparison. Take out Bush and insert OJ, then you answer the question.

It was Jacko, himself who invited us to accuse him.  He paid money to kids with whom he'd shared a bed.  It wasn't just one accusation.

This is lunacy to believe the best of Jacko just becasue the kids waited a few years to come forward.  It's a common pattern for molested kids.

don lemon is just that, a lemon what do you expect from cnn

michael jackson could care less about the black community.  case in point, he bleached his skin white, married a white woman, and has white kids.  he made music to make money, and it's what he wanted to do.  give me a break.  frank sinatra was a true civil rights leader.  getting sammy davis jr. into clubs when it was taboo and could be a career breaker, was far more than jackson ever did.  just because mtv started playing jackson's videos didn't mean mtv would play black entertainers because they were black.  i remember mtv also showing prince vidoes (purple rain)because they were hip and on the charts in the early to mid eighties.

WOW... it's hard to believe

how stupid these people are.

MJ was instrumental in opening the door for rap "stars" to grab their crotches in public and promote violience against women and children.

The fact that these idiots condone such behavior says a lot.

Michael Jackson? An "accidental civil rights leaders"?

Give me a break!  Jackson was a walking freak show. His adoring fans will hold him high for his musical talents but the rest of us, as Bill O said on "The Factor", do not see him as a hero.

He will be forever in my mind as someone who lived extravagently, spent money like there was no tomorrow, had a sick perversion toward children, and was nothing short of a narcassitic egomaniac. Jackson did absolutely nothing to even remotely try to improve mankind but the MSM will never admit to that reality.

Hero? Yeah, right. Now - would someone pass the bromo - I think I am going to be nauseous from all this funeral coverage!

"Who am us, anyway?" - Firesign Theatre

Lemon The Elitist

Lemon states that anyone who believes the Jackson coverage is overdone is an elitist.  Then he goes on to say the Princess Diana coverage was overdone.  Wouldn't that make him an elitist?

I guess this is a case of, "it takes one to know one."

jackson coverage

The coverage is WAY over the line and anyone with half a brain can see that.  To say that he is a civil rights leader is ridiculous. What did he do to promote civil rights? He was ashamed  of being black and did everything he could to become white. His children are white. He surrounded himself with other people's white, male children.  If he was a true lover of the African American race, why did he have only white children? Why not have his own black children? If he was unable to father a child, that's a different story.. but why not adopt a child of his own race?

He was weird, spooky and dangerous to kids.  If he truly loved all children, why did he focus on boys? Even after his actions were deemed inappropriate, he continued to do whatever he wanted. Just pay off the victims and move on to the next one.  I don't understand accepting payment for your child if they're abused, but no one knows what the families were subjected to by his cronies.  All I know is that if I had been accused of something so horrible, I would have used my extensive fortune to prove my innocence.. not buy more gold furniture.

→ Rowdy

It proved impossible for Jackson to explain how a child knew the exact location of a Vitiligo blotch on the erect Jackson johnson.

No way could he prove his "innocence" after that.

We seem to forget the affidavits against Jackson were damningly specific.

YOU PEOPLE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON.

Lemon suggested there wasn’t much criticism of the overcoverage of Princess Diana’s death (what country was he living in back then?), implying maybe because she was white:

While there was criticism of the over coverage of her death, I don't recall her dirty laundry being aired every time her name was mentioned. The woman was an ADULTEROUS WHORE, who has a strangely red haired son named HARRY that looks like the guy that was schtupping her! In fact here's a link to a USA TODAY article which mentions the doubts about Harry's parentage....TEN YEARS after her death!  http://www.usatoday....       No talk about it during the news broadcasts of  her memorial service to be sure!

The allegations against Michael Jackson were not only "not proven", they were DISPROVEN in a court of law. The comments by the jurors themselves indicated that they thought the mother and her child, were LYING. Not just that the prosecution "didn't prove" their case, they believed the mother and child to be charlatans.  As for the Jordy Chandler incident, well, none of you are actually in a position to either understand it nor to judge it. You don't have the criteria. I work with people who themselves are "industries" and their concerns are quite different from our concerns, people like Tom Cruise, Michael Keaton, Robert Deniro,  Robin Williams just to name a few. There's a reason you didn't see Denzel Washington "stumping" for Obama even though I believe he supports him. Sure he might have attended a fundraiser or two but that's his right as a citizen, I'm talking about doing the "Oprah" or something. It's because it would harm their bottom line. Once you begin earning upwards of two or three HUNDRED MILLION, you become an "industry", but it's a peculiar industry. It depends solely on public love. Thousands of lives are  connected to yours in ways both seen and unseen. A major star like Washington or Cruise will affect the bottom line of whatever company he's working for, which is why Paramount showed Cruise the door after his couch jumping antics on Oprah.

ANY position taken publicly will piss off those of the opposite opinion.  And we aren't even talking about being on trial for something heinous, we're talking about having an OPINION.  Look at the harm done to Sean Penn's box office because of his stupidity and the public nature thereof. Can there really be any doubt that he is one of the finest actors in the history of the world? To those stuck in "Spiccoli" mode, I'd suggest you see "The Falcon and the Snowman", "Carlito's Way", "I am Sam"  and "Mystic River", before dismissing the notion. That said, when you are Michael Jackson your concerns are even greater.  If you have EVER heard of a case being SETTLED because the negative publicity stemming from a trial would ruin the company involved, there can be no greater case made for that, than Michael Jackson.  He was an "industry" of heretofore unheard of proportions, which required HUNDREDS of  MILLIONS ANNUALLY in order to operate at the same level, WITHOUT PRODUCING A NEW PRODUCT! Solely on public love, people buying CD's that have been out for ages!

MUCH HAS BEEN MADE ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF THE JORDY CHANDLER SETTLEMENT, estimated between 20-25 million dollars.

Sounds like a lot of money. TO ME.  But I'm not worth a BILLION DOLLARS. I know some of the pundits like to say he was only worth 500 mill and most of that was debt. But that's real time money. Michaels money generates in  perpetuity, that's what happens when you own the entire song catalog of a record company. He owned not only the Beatles but many of SONY'S top artists, that's why banks had no problem giving him loans in the hundreds of millions. Sad as it is to say, but , TWENTY FIVE MILLION DOLLARS MEANT NOTHING TO MICHAEL JACKSON.  It's like you having 200,000 and somebody says "hey, we can make this nuisance lawsuit go away for like ten grand" if 10 out of 200 allows the 190 you have left, to keep EARNING it sounds like a good deal as opposed to negative pub which would come from fighting it.  The lurid accusations which surfaced in the most recent case stand testament to what people would be willing to say, even if a JURY SUBSEQUENTLY CALLS THEM LIARS.

ABC once showed a LIVE feed from a store in Vegas where Jackson just happened to pop into the mall to do some "shopping".  The place was an obvious madhouse and the store had to be closed to the public who PACKED THE MALL once word got round. MICHAEL JACKSON SPENT SIX MILLIION DOLLARS IN THIRTY FIVE MINUTES "shopping".   It was both appalling and amazing as he walked around with a scanner "bleeping" items in the three hundred thousand dollar range into his "checkout cart".  The obsequious fawner that was the store owner even had the honesty to remind Michael that he already had two or three of the statues he'd picked, valued at 200,000 each. Michael thanked him and said he liked them so much he wanted a few more.  So when you judge at LEAST use the criteria of a man who would REGULARLY engage in DAY LONG shopping sprees approaching Ten Million dollars a clip. BILL O'REILLY just surmised that he believed Michael to have spent over the years, at least 400 MILLION dollars on HIMSELF. Not counting his enormous charity efforts, he is the NUMBER ONE charity supporter in the history of the Entertainment Industry. So while to you and I, twenty five mil to make a nuisance lawsuit go away might seem like a lot, to Michael it CLEARLY was not.

BTW, the allegations against Michael Jackson by Jordy Chandler, only surfaced after the child was DRUGGED by his estranged father, a dentist, who gave him anesthesia while extracting a tooth.  He then, while the child was DRUGGED, questioned him about his relationship to Michael Jackson. The father, using methods that our soldiers can't use against terrorists, using methods eerily similar to those used in  those debunked "repressed memory " cases, got this information and then called not the police, but a lawyer. See the POLICE don't drop a child rape investigation because the kid after receiving said settlement, doesn't want to participate.

So in closing, you know nothing. I'm in a much better position to know whether Michael was a child molester than most likely any of you, being friends with Michaels "godfather", Smokey Robinson, and I don't know what went on there so I know danged well, that YOU don't. This was the greatest entertainer in the history of the world. His music inspired BILLIONS of people. I can remember practicing the dance moves, quite successfully I might add. I remember wearing my hair like that! LOL. So while I know many of you would like to judge and make yourselves feel superior when you are anything but, allow those of us who loved his music, to lament the passing of his gift, his talent, from the world.  May the Lord have mercy on his soul. And yours as well. God bless you.

Acts can you explain why

Acts can you explain why Michael slept in beds with little boys?  He admitted to that and THAT is not normal.

Also, the fact that Michael was declared "not guilty" doesn't mean he didn't commit the acts he was accused of.  It means there wasn't enough proof to convict him.

In all honesty I don't know enough details about the allegations one way or another, but his behavior is not that of a well adjusted adult.

Greatest entertainer in the history of the world? Really?  He was a good singer and dancer, time will tell if it's a lasting legacy.

~That post answers so many questions.......

Among them, the proper spelling of "schtupping". Also, "Can Acts...like a tool dance?"

I can remember practicing the dance moves, quite successfully I might add.

Answer: Yes, just not with a woman.

Glad to see you back, Acts. You were gone for so long I thought that perhaps someone had shot you..again. It would be a damn shame to lose someone who can moonwalk while spouting Scripture.

That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.

Keep drinking the "Jesus Juice" Keith

Deranged, you are.

And I must defend Prince Harry, here.  He is the spitting image of his mother's brother.  You know, Earl Spencer.  But of course, you feel all righteous calling the dead princess a whore while defending a pedophile.

Nicely done, Keith.  You sick bastard.

I hope he fails, too.

Acts,

So, the white princess was a whore, but the child molesting faggot was inspiring. Got it.

Consider yourself dismissed.

Actually, Acts, I think MJ busted the gates of Hell wide open...

...with his brainless head.
