CBS anchor Katie Couric was roasted Wednesday night in Washington at the Helen Thomas Award dinner of the American News Women's Club. The Washington Post's Reliable Source column relayed Helen Thomas's historical verdict on Couric's Sarah Palin interview:
Helen Thomas wrapped with a bit of political commentary on the Palin interview. "The ballgame was over after that." Couric, she insisted, "saved the country."
McCain-Palin adviser Nicolle Wallace joked that if Palin can see Russia from her house, well, Couric can see New Jersey from hers -- "but that's as close as you media elites get to Jersey."

Even Helen Thomas admits
May 22, 2009 - 08:09 ET by c5thenThat the biased and heavily edited Palin interview that aired on CBS helped the democrat ticket in the election. This is an admision that the media are partisan and actively worked to assist one of the candidates while actively working to impede another.
Hello!! FEC....where are you?
How many out there think it is journalistically ethical to edit someone in mid sentence? CBS did it 4 times with Palin. The Dan Rather legacy lives on at CBS.

May 22, 2009 - 08:33 ET by mattmThis is exactly what occured to me also, yet they still insist they are not biased. Lying hypocrites.
"Heavily edited" is right. From what I've heard, the interview was 2 hours - KKKatie aired 4 minutes of it...
And when the economy's dead and the Gitmo Guests escape justice and cause attacks, and all hell breaks loose, will Helen say that Couric destroyed the country - by guaranteeing the election of the administration that will have destroyed America?
"We got the change. Where's the hope?"
heavily edited?
May 22, 2009 - 09:08 ET by shawn228As bias as the the interview was, I do not believe it was heavily edited. Here is the clip that played over and over and the main one the swayed many independent voters on Palin. At what point would you say there was an edit or clever cut scene

This is what heavily edited means
May 22, 2009 - 09:49 ET by c5thenThe original unedited version used to be available on YouTube. Don't know if it still is. In the version that aired on CBS, Palin is cut off in mid sentence 4 times. The aired version gives a completely different impression then the full version. The sentences that were cut off where clarifying statements, so CBS wanted to stick with the impression that they wanted, not the full answer that Palin wanted to give.
This is typical of the "drive by media". They will ask someone a loaded question and then edit their answer. Here's an example:
Reporter: So, Mr. Mayor...Have you stopped beating your wife and daughter yet?
Mayor: What!!?? I have never, absolutely never, beaten my wife and I don't even have a daughter. <turning to the security supervisor> Get this piece of trash out of here now!
Aired interview on the 5:00 news:
Reporter: "So, Mr. Mayor...Have you stopped beating your wife and daughter yet?"
Mayor: "I have"
Reporter: [talking over video of them being removed by security] "There you have it, an admission by the mayor that could prove very damaging in the upcomming elections. We were summarily escorted off the premisis by his security thugs as you can see. Back to you in the studio.

May 22, 2009 - 09:56 ET by shawn228Just to let you know, I like Palin and I voted for the McCain/Palin ticket. I watched the Gibson and Couric interviews and the flubbed questions. The foreign policy queston, the bailout question etc, there was not clever editing in any of those and the played straight through, just like the link I gave to Mattm.
A few people on NB have admitted those interviews were disasters and much of fault lies in Governor Palin being unprepared and not just the msm.
No c5then, I admit the interviews were bias, but it was not the msm fault or their editing that was responsible for her answers.

Palin
May 22, 2009 - 10:09 ET by JimboI supported Palin then, and do today. I agree that Palin could have been better prepared. I also think that she sensed she walked into an ambush and let her emotions get the better of her with some glib answers to questions. Mixed with the muzzle the McCain people had on her, she was struggling.
Having said all that however, there was editing to make her look foolish, and it was Couric's agenda all along to produce the piece that ultimately aired.
And yet
May 22, 2009 - 11:34 ET by Southern voterthey have no concern about Joe Biden as the second in line or Nancy Pelosi being third in line as President...Sarah Palin would have certainly made it much more interesting watching the news ,,,,and on top of that she would have been more powerful than Nancy Pelosi... Go Sarah !!!

May 22, 2009 - 10:23 ET by SemusAnyone who allows themselves to be swayed by the main stream media should at least be smart enough to know they aren't smart enough to vote. They should realize they have no write to inflict their stupidity (At best) on everyone else. Voters have an obligation to be well informed. If they can't recognize biased, ambush journalism they shouldn't be in a voting booth.
It was deceitful and dangerous what the MSM did to Bush and did for Obama and continues to do, there isn't even any pretense. You may be diplomatic about it if you wish, but they don't deserve it. Ask yourself why is the MSM so protective of Obama, they run all his interference. There is no scrutiny allowed, and the simply reason for this is this facade would not stand up to any scrutiny and they (the MSM) know it.The reason they're doing it is even scarier but I don't want to get into that here. But I'll just say they aren't all "Useful Idiots" just most of them.
Thats what I'd like to say but I won't.

We weren't saved. We got Obama.
May 22, 2009 - 08:12 ET by Galvanic"Couric's executive producer Rick Kaplan also joked about the Palin interview: "We didn't air this part of the interview, but Katie actually told Sarah Palin, 'Well, I can see Jersey from here, but that doesn't mean I know where Jimmy Hoffa is buried.'"
Couric can't even tell us where Helen Thomas is buried.
"McCain-Palin adviser Nicolle Wallace also played on that Jersey theme: If Palin can see Russia from her house, well, Couric can see New Jersey from hers -- "but that's as close as you media elites get to Jersey."
Of course, Palin never said she could see Russia from her house; Tina Fey said it. Perhaps that's why the McCain-Palin advisors did such a lousy job in 2008, and why Palin isn't exactly thrilled with the way they tried to handle her image.
Why do Repubs pay homage to the MSM?
May 22, 2009 - 08:38 ET by jefflebowskiPalin should have known she would not get a fair shake from CBS before she ever set foot on the set. I would love for a conservative to say publicly, "I will not give interviews to CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS or NBC as they are heavily biased to the left. The only way I will consider meeting with them is on a live interview. That is how low my opinion is of the mainstream media."
The libs had no problem boycotting a Fox debate. Why must our candidates kiss the rears of the MSM enemy?

Here's Why
May 22, 2009 - 11:51 ET by JimboBecause the Republican Party right now is a rudderless ship. There is no one in the party who is strong enough to take a true conservative stance and let the political chips fall where they may. Without someone of that character and leadership, the rest of the sheep that make up the Republican Party continue to get drawn toward the center like some black hole that absorbs everything around it.

May 24, 2009 - 12:48 ET by Gary HallI've looked at a number of those, side by side. Quite revealing. I propose that it would be very powerful if someone would take all of the interviews (perhaps a few press conferences, as well) with McCain, Palin, Obama, and Biden, and put compile all of the quesitons asked in side by side comparisons. It should include a good bit from the primary season as well.

May 22, 2009 - 20:48 ET by GregEHmmm, so if the Couric-Palin interview was so important, is she saying that McCain may have won otherwise?
I hope Republicans are paying close attention. If Bush was so hated, and McCain was painted as "a continuation of Bush," then why didn't Obama win by 15 points or more? Then, flash back to election 2000. If Clinton years were so great, why didn't Gore, VP in the great Clinton admin, not wipe the floor easily with GWB in 2000? Heck, he couldn't even win his own state.
Anyone that says Republicans need to move more to the middle, is only saying what Democrats want to be said. The fact is, Republicans need to be conservative, and nominate people who articulate their ideas well and disarm Democrats who happen to "give great speeches," by matching that part. If they match the speech skill, the liberal has no chance when it's ideas vs ideas.
That is right Greg
