Newsweek Editor Welcomes Easter with the 'End of Christian America'

Newsweek editor Jon Meacham welcomed "The End of Christian America," with the arrival of new statistics from a new religious identification study. Even though he later tries to stipulate that his own magazine’s headline is a little overwrought, he’s thrilled that the country is maturing beyond uptight Christian orthodoxy and beyond any Christian claim to insist on social conservatism:

While we remain a nation decisively shaped by religious faith, our politics and our culture are, in the main, less influenced by movements and arguments of an explicitly Christian character than they were even five years ago. I think this is a good thing—good for our political culture, which, as the American Founders saw, is complex and charged enough without attempting to compel or coerce religious belief or observance.

It is good for Christianity, too, in that many Christians are rediscovering the virtues of a separation of church and state that protects what Roger Williams, who founded Rhode Island as a haven for religious dissenters, called "the garden of the church" from "the wilderness of the world."

As crucial as religion has been and is to the life of the nation, America's unifying force has never been a specific faith, but a commitment to freedom—not least freedom of conscience. At our best, we single religion out for neither particular help nor particular harm; we have historically treated faith-based arguments as one element among many in the republican sphere of debate and decision. The decline and fall of the modern religious right's notion of a Christian America creates a calmer political environment and, for many believers, may help open the way for a more theologically serious religious life.

Meacham routinely argues that liberal Christianity is "theologically serious." He echoed that same thought when Newsweek made the "religious case" for gay marriage. Then, Meacham tried to talk the reader off the ledge they built in their own headline:

Let's be clear: while the percentage of Christians may be shrinking, rumors of the death of Christianity are greatly exaggerated. Being less Christian does not necessarily mean that America is post-Christian. A third of Americans say they are born again; this figure, along with the decline of politically moderate-to liberal mainline Protestants, led the ARIS authors to note that "these trends … suggest a movement towards more conservative beliefs and particularly to a more 'evangelical' outlook among Christians." With rising numbers of Hispanic immigrants bolstering the Roman Catholic Church in America, and given the popularity of Pentecostalism, a rapidly growing Christian milieu in the United States and globally, there is no doubt that the nation remains vibrantly religious—far more so, for instance, than Europe.

Newsweek clearly see traditional Christianity as a pestilent obstacle to the kind of libertine America they want to create. How nice to pick the week of Easter to tell Americans that Jesus is on the wane.

  But the thing about

But the thing about Chritianity is that there can be a decline and then... overnight there can be a re-awakening and people are again drawn to faith.  After all, people are built to believe in something greater than themselves, whether it's a religion or a favorite rock band.  The idolization of obama is an example of people who have a religious deficit in their lives and are desparate for something to believe in.

I welcome Easter with the utter obliteration of "news" week and the rest of the pathetic and pitiable MSM:)!

...and here's an Easter good news article I found from about 2000 years ago:

Luke chapter 6:22  Blessed are you when men shall hate you, and when they shall exclude and mock you, and throw out your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake.

6:23  Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did the same thing to the prophets.

6:24  "But woe to you who are rich! For you have received your consolation.

6:25  Woe to you, you who are full now! For you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now! For you will mourn and weep.

6:26  Woe, when men speak well of you! For their fathers did the same thing to the false prophets.

6:27  "But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

6:28  bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.

6:29  To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don't withhold your coat also.

6:30  Give to everyone who asks you, and don't ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again.

6:31  "As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them.

6:32  If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

6:33  If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.

6:34  If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much.

6:35  But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.

6:36  Therefore be merciful, Even as your Father is also merciful.

6:37  Don't judge, And you won't be judged. Don't condemn, And you won't be condemned. Set free, And you will be set free.

6:38  "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you."

It is just so very odd

Liberals are just so bloody frightened of Christianity, with no good reason that I can discern.  They're irrational on the subject.

In fact, last night, we chatted with Shy's "moderate" brother.  He felt Sarah Palin was "dangerous"....when asked why....he threw out that "anyone who believed earth was 6,000 years old was stupid".  That was the sum total of his argument.

I queried..."Have you ever been to a Pentacostal Church?"....Yes.  "What frightened you about it?"  Crickets.

"Who do you see in the "religious right" as being dangerous?"  Waco.  Say what?  Waco is the best the liberals have?

I must say, it was an exercise in futility, and I had to give Shy's bro the thumbs down to any further participation...it was like beating my head against a brick wall.  (BTW, no one here can identify my religious beliefs, because I have never, and will never, voice them here.  Suffice it to say, I hate all "bashing").

After further reflection, I've decided liberals are merely afraid as a knee jerk reaction, just like people were afraid of a Catholic president before JFK was elected...or as the leftist so lovingly tried to pin on many of us conservatives, we were afraid of electing a black man because we're bigots!!!!

This little picture sums it up the best, coffee down, fellow NB's.

I hope he fails, too.

You may be right, botg

Their "fear" could be a pose...because I certainly have never been able to get one liberal to come up with anything concrete in reply to "what are you afraid of"?

Waco?  I mean really, that's just nuts.

I hope he fails, too.

what makes a feminist a feminist?

Womens rights?  NO! else they would not support Islamists and their anti-woman societies neither would they have supported BJ Clinton's repeated abuse of women.

Womens Suffrage and freedom?  NO! else they would have supported the Bush doctrine to give freedom and voting rights to billions of women!!

Abortion--YES so they can have sex without consequences and kill babies without guilt

Sad, very very sad

Glad to help, Cocodrie

I found that picture this morning, and knew I'd be able to use it....fits the liberal knee-jerk reaction to a tee, yes?

Another thing that is just so insane about the liberals....they just love and want to appease muslims.  When the muslims are all about imposing their religion on everyone else, by fiat.  Look what has happened to the British court system, they now have special muslim courts, using muslim laws.  It's insane.  And the areas in our country with large muslim populations are trying to pull the same thing here.

So can anyone tell me where the "religious right" is trying to impose anything on anyone here?

I hope he fails, too.

Blonde

They want to keep us from imposing our religious beliefs on our children.

The UN is opposed to educating one's children in religion and in some countries your children can be taken away from you if you do.

The UN defines Christians and Jews as religious defectives. If Present Hussein has his way, the UN will be running this country soon.

Jesus Loves You so much He died for you

Ah, the crux of the issue

Rather, they wish to impose the liberal and green religion on the children.  It's falling into place.

I'm really becoming a fan of home schooling.  Truly.  We have a new member here who put up a great Forum on the "Off Topic" section on Home Schooling.

Good evening Blonde

Thanks for the picture and the comment. I needed them both.

Yea, B,Waco is the best they've got.  Maybe Jim Jones too.

Nevermind that neither of those groups was any kind of Christian Church; they were cults, pure and simple.

Meacham should remember the old saying "Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it."

The hoped-for end of a Christian America just might come when we are living under Sharia law....not by conquest, but by abdication.

(OMO, I'm texting!)

Funny you should mention Jim Jones, as I threw that one right back at the Waco accusation last night.  Although Jim Jones was described in the press using Christian religious terms (a head fake, no doubt), he was a communist.   Most of these mass murderers are leftists, although the media takes great pains to make them out to be "right wing".

Jones almost immediately was involved with San Francisco politics, being instrumental in the election of liberal George Moscone to the office of mayor in 1975; Jones in turn was given the lucrative post of housing commissioner. He met with then-candidate for vice president Walter Mondale, and would speak with other leading Democrats at their San Francisco headquarters after the election in 1976, among them First Lady Rosalynn Carter and California governor Jerry Brown. Harvey Milk, a leading gay politician in San Francisco would say to Jones: "Rev Jim, It may take me many a day to come back down from the high that I reach today. I found something dear today. I found a sense of being that makes up for all the hours and energy placed in a fight. I found what you wanted me to find. I shall be back. For I can never leave." [1] In support of Jones when the allegations of abuse surfaced, both Mayor Moscone and Milk would write letters to President Carter and agencies concerned; Moscone would publicly deny the allegations ever took place and prevented a local investigation from happening.

I hope he fails, too.

Blonde, have you ever

Blonde, have you ever noticed that an argument with a moderate or a liberal only lasts as long as it stays on one level?  I noticed in your argument with Shy's brother a pattern that happens to me when I engage in conversations with those good folks:  As soon as you follow your initial question with another question asking for specifics or depth, their arguments seem to fall apart.  My brother is a former Republican who works for the postal service and has fallen prey to their union indoctrination.  It's funny when he tries to let me have it with one of their talking points.  Here's an example:

Brother: "Did you hear what Rush said about Obama?  He's losing it, saying he hopes Obama fails."

Me:  "Ummm, here's what he actually said.  It sounds a lot different when it's actually in context, doesn't it?"

Brother (after about 10 seconds of silence):  "So, have you heard from Mom and Dad lately?"

Thank God baseball season starts tomorrow so we have something to talk about where I'm not embarrassing him every 10 minutes.

Can someone explain to me how President Obama can criticize the workings of the Bush administration and then turn around and use it as the measuring stick of their own administration?

Very true, BigB

It's totally maddening.

We kind of allowed Shy's Bro to get in on our conversation as a courtesy....after about ten minutes, it was like "enough" (Glenda Jackson as Queen Elizabeth). Poor Shy.

Within 2 minutes we had name calling, staw man, out and out ignoring those (me mostly) who weren't drawn off topic, etc.

Sad but true, liberals don't understand anything at all, they've been drinking the kool-aid too long.

Glad you're going to have something to talk to your brother about....much more pleasant a topic.

I hope he fails, too.

The Holy Bible says that things of the Spirit . . .

But, really, what they hate and are afraid of is the truth, which Christ Jesus said He was and is.

When's the last time you heard anyone say "Allah-damn" or "Buddha-damn," etc.?

equal opportunity atheist

This reminds me of the article they published back in August about how completely stupid the ritual of fasting for a month. I think it was called "The Lunacy of Ramadan."

Wait a minute... was that Newsweek? Or the New York Times? I'm pretty sure I read that piece... didn't I?... maybe not...

Irony

What is ironic about Jon Meacham stating that is that before becoming Editor in Chief, Meacham was Newsweek's Relgion Editor.

Meacham doesn't even see

Meacham doesn't even see his own irony; even as he says that

we remain a nation decisively shaped by religious faith,

(emphasis mine)

he claims that Christianity is just not that important any more.

And he also says

many Christians are rediscovering the virtues of a separation of church
and state that protects what Roger Williams, who founded Rhode Island
as a haven for religious dissenters, called "the garden of the church"

Got that Jon?  It was meant to protect the Church from the state; not vice versa!

As Neo reaches for the red pill Morpheus warns Neo

"Remember, all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more."

Liberals are scared by God

Liberals are afraid of, repelled by (or insert any other negative aversion here) Christianity because God scares them just like little children are afraid of a stern father when they are misbehaving. Any genuine representation of that God (i.e. Bush, Palin, the Pope - all fallible human beings but overt believers in Christ etc) will get the knee jerk "we can't stand them" treatment. Obama by the way would never have to worry about that response. The substance isn't there to begin with.

I dont think liberals are

I dont think liberals are so much afraid of God as they are of Jesus.  Jesus, after all, is in their faces.  When the liberal ACLU stops public prayer, it's always the closing in Jesus' name they object to.

Newsweak

We will see the end of Newsweak long before we see the end of Christianity.

The "religion" Jon Meacham should be fearing is Islam

After all, they are not exactly known for their fondness for liberals, particularly lefty atheists.

Besides, when was the last time you saw Christians do this to a 17 yo girl?

This coup has gone on long enough. The time to put it down is NOW.

Let's not forget the almost total absence of coverage of

the beheading in Buffalo - you know, that wonderful fellow who wanted to build a 'bridge' between Islam and other western religions.  I wonder if he secretly taped it so he could get his jollies later.  I fear it won't be much later - our judicial system will probably have to defer to Sharia Law and he'll walk!

They (I think it was Time Magazine?) declared God was dead once.  I guess they've decided to try the battle one hill at a time.

I can't help but notice the Muslim hill remains unassailed.

Meanwhile, wiping away the vestiges of the Christian faith from mainstream culture and replacing it with a new morally relativistic ego-religion is somehow a good thing?

I'd have to disagree.

  The main reason for the

The main reason for the lefts dislike of Christianity is it's message of the importance of the individual.  Socialists do not want us to think of the individual but the collective.  To them harming individuals does not matter if it benefits the 'whole'.  That's why in their world killing 'unwanted' babies is not only sinless but is actually a good thing.  Taking someones property and giving it to another is a good thing because it promotes fairness.  The leftists don't fear Russia, Cuba, Syria or China.  What really frightens them is a mom and dad, smiling, holding hands while their well behaved children walk behind them as they all come out of church.

Amen

Amen and well said, brother, or sister, as the case may be.

Jon Meacham:  what

Jon Meacham:  what Christian church has compelled or coerced anyone to attend (services)?  I'm a little unclear about that point.  It is bad, Jon when people buy Newsweak.  It's such a waste of hard earned money on something written and edited so poorly.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

Every year

It seems that every year during the Easter season, someone somewhere has to take a swipe at Christian beliefs.  It's really quite predictible and boring at this point.

 The teleprompter messiah

The teleprompter messiah has shown the way, on his knees groveling at the Suadi king's anus.

Such an immature statement of yours, Jon.

Whether it's navel-gazing secular liberalism or the cafeteria-tray mentality of largely-nominal, so-called "liberal Christianity," there is no theological gravitas in any religious system that gives either undue deference to human beings or short shrift to what God says about Himself (and everything else) in the Bible.

Historical Christianity, Jon, has always been uniquely and exclusively "theologically serious," dealing as it does with both the everyday and the eternal.  While our responses to them have varied over the centuries, the core truths of the faith remain unchanged--something that human-constructed "religions" from Islam to Mormonism, and everything in between, cannot claim.

And with regard to "America's unifying force," Jon, I could refer you to a number of fundamental documents which refute your tepid assertion, but the Mayflower Compact springs to mind.  It begins thusly, and like so: "In the name of God, Amen."  It goes on, Jon, to assert both their desire to honor their country, and (first and foremost) to establish a colory "for the Glory of God and advancement of the Christian Faith".  Sounds pretty "unifying" to me, and that was all the way back in 1620.

"Anno Domini 1620," to be specific.

Oh, and by the way, Jon: There's no such Constitutional entity as "separation of church and state."  There is the explicit desire to avoid establishing a state-run church, such as the Anglican Church, but that in no way prohibits those of us who are Christians from being involved in the affairs of government.  Sorry to disappoint you, but we're not going anywhere.

Yet...

As Christianity's numbers

As Christianity's numbers decline, or fail to keep up with growing population we have increasingly more violence, divorces, drug use, etc.

I have yet to see how secular progressivism has managed to solve these problems anywhere.  Their tactic is to just ignore social problems as the Soviet Union and others did...out of sight, out of mind.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Besides the Obamaweek editor being ignorant about ...

. . .the separation of church and state, he's also dumb as a rock about the Founding Fathers and the importance of Christianity to them, hence America.

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." -- Patrick Henry in a speech to the Virginia House of Burgesses, May, 1765.

That said, I do think he's right: We're at the end of the Christian era in America.

In fact, for a bit, we've been fully in the anti-Christian era in America.

With Obamaweek's proclamation, it'll be interesting to see how it and the rest of the ASS -- advocacy/slobbering/socialist -- media will ratchet up its attacks on the Christ and Christianity.

Of course, given how many Catholic and Protestant Christians there are in America, and how few Muslims there are compared to Christians, I'm sure that Islam will ascend, like a rocket, in the ASS media.

The Anti-Christian spirit

The Anti-Christian spirit led by Satan, the great deceiver, is rampant in the msm. Those anti-christians on Newsweak actually believe Satan's lie that humanity is better off without God. Of course this is a lie. Most problems in our society stem from our disobedience to God's laws. Satan knows that the best way to destroy society is by undermining family structures. How does he do it? By telling people promiscuity is okay, extramarital sex is modern and hip, there is such a thing as safe sex, that gayness is normal and acceptable, that abortion is a human right etc. These are all blatant lies that I couldn't see through before I had give my life to Jesus. Now that the Holy Ghost lives within me, I cannot believe how I bought into Satan's lies. And sadly, all liberals fall prey to the great deceiver.

Thanks for your testimony. Especially...

...your honesty in saying that before your life-changing encounter with Christ Jesus, you believed Satan's lies.

BTW: As you well know, it's not just liberals who fall prey to those lies.

Everyone does.

God's blessings.

It is no dishonor to be in a minority in the cause of liberty and virtue. ~ Sam Adams

The founders did not intend to create a secular America

While we remain a nation decisively shaped by religious faith, our politics and our culture are, in the main, less influenced by movements and arguments of an explicitly Christian character than they were even five years ago. I think this is a good thing—good for our political culture, which, as the American Founders saw, is complex and charged enough without attempting to compel or coerce religious belief or observance.

Funny, one of the first appropriations of the original Congress was for Bibles to be used in evangelizing the Indians.  Other early actions included creating chaplaincies for each House and using a room in the Capitol for weekly church services.  If the Founders thought as liberals would have us believe, why weren't they jumping up and down trying to block such actions?

I seriously doubt the Founders could have anticipated the way our society has turned out.  I believe the First Amendment was meant to keep government from dictating to religious institutions, not to muzzle the religious in political affairs.  I think the Founding Fathers intended for religion, especially the Christian religion, to flourish in America.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

"many Christians are

"many Christians are rediscovering the virtues of a separation of church and state that protects..."the garden of the church" from "the wilderness of the world."

He could care less about the Christianity, his goal is only to keep the "light of truth" away from the "shadows of immorality" so that eventually the weight of darkness is so great that it will extinquish the light.

We all know how this story turns out.. Jumping into the septic tank is easy, fast and fun if you ignore those that know whats at the bottom. Climbing back out of it is long, difficult, and painful.

Its gonna get much worse before it gets better.
