Missing from Obama's Afghan Escalation: Anti-War Groups Suddenly Say 'No Comment'

The Washington Post's Friday and Saturday front-page reports by Karen DeYoung on President Obama's escalation of war in Afghanistan are curiously missing one political element: objections from the strident anti-war groups on the left. Whatever happened to the protesters that treated Bush as a reckless warmonger?

Answer: they're either being marginalized, or they were more interested in getting a Democrat in the White House. The real story wasn't unearthed on the front of the Post, but in liberal blogger Greg Sargent's post on Friday at the Post-operated website WhoRunsGov.com:

Don’t look now, but President Obama’s announcement today of an escalation in the American presence in Afghanistan is being met with mostly silence — and even some support — from the most influential liberal groups who opposed the Iraq War....

MoveOn.org, the most visible and controversial anti-war bugaboo to people on the right, declined to make any public statement about Obama’s Afghan policies in response to my queries. An official close to the group confirmed to me that MoveOn wouldn’t be saying anything in the near term. The group is expected to poll its members on Afghanistan, the official said, though it’s unclear when.

MoveOn’s own members were recently polled on their priorities for 2009, and Afghanistan didn’t make the cut.

Nor will we hear anything from Americans United for Change, which ran $600,000 worth of TV ads against the Iraq War in the summer of 2007. "Americans United for Change doesn’t plan to comment on President Obama’s new strategy," a spokesperson for the group, Lauren Weiner, just emailed.

Jon Soltz, the head of VoteVets, one of the most pugnacious anti-Iraq War groups, came out in support of Obama’s Afghan strategy in an Op Ed with The Huffington Post.

Remember that MoveOn.org was so stridently anti-war that they opposed the war in Afghanistan weeks after 9/11...but now they're just fine with Obama putting in 21,000 more troops?  On the right, people who supported a War on Terror still back it. But it's a little weird to see MoveOn folks suddenly burning their peace logos. Some lefties stayed consistent, Sargent noted:

One group did blast the strategy today: Tom Andrews of Win Without War warned that it "will lead to quagmire" and "undermine our security."

The relative silence on the left about Obama’s Afghan strategy is understandable. The politics of Afghanistan are murky because of September 11th. The argument against staying isn’t as clear cut as with Iraq. Liberal groups don’t want to distract from passing Obama’s enormous domestic agenda. Obama’s Afghan moves are part of a larger regional strategy that rests heavily on diplomacy — a major break from the past. And officials with some of these groups don’t want to lose inside influence with the White House.

Times do change.

Yes, and shouldn't the Post notice this development in a prominent place in the newspaper?

Sheehan

I saw one liberal on the TV box this week ripping Obammy a new one for escalating in Afghanistan, and it was Cindy Sheehan. Still a loony nutcase, but I'll give her consistency.

The Left Wing is always good

Did MoveOn.Org poll their members on anything Bush did or did they instruct and propagandize their members on what to think about Bush? The left are apparently easily led.
But are we really surprised? These groups just hate Americanism. Obama isn't pro America so whatever he does is just fine. The Right Wing is always evil. The Left Wing is always good. Simple.

Was there ever a protest of the Bosnian War?

Typical

  The dalliances of Bill

The dalliances of Bill Clinton in the Whitehouse were ignored by the feminists which then ended their credibility.  So too, the anti-war people will also lose any credibility if they do not denounce and protest obama's war escalations in the same manner as if George Bush was in the Whitehouse.

Why?  He campaigned on the

Why?  He campaigned on the issue.  After all, Afghanistan was the home base of the terrorist organization which murdered 3000 Americans.

Jer

   That's not the point.

That's not the point.  It's the anti-war people who are at issue here.  Have they come out and said they support this war?  Do they approve escalating it into Pakistan?  You know we are now firing even more missles from drones targeting what is thought to be terrorists but the bombs kill whoever is in range.  Is this a policy that the so-called anti-war people support?  If they do support these actions of obama then they can no longer be considered anti-war.  If they do not support these actions but remain silent, as the feminists did with Bill Clinton, then they are exposed as hypocrites, cowards and will destroy any credibility as proponants of peace.

"DumbAssity of Dope"

You know, I assumed all the

You know, I assumed all the Republicans who criticized Clinton's intervention in Kosovo--while our military was engaged in combat--wouldn't be critical of those who objected to Bush's intervention in Iraq.  I was wrong.  And their hypocrisy was exposed.

Jer

Wan'[t that an illegal war too?

Wasn't that an illegal war too? Especially when Clinton avoided Congressional approval by including NATO? There was no Congressional authorization for that "intervention" like there was for Iraq yet I don't remember the Liberals complaining about that much, do you?

There was a difference that

There was a difference that is key to note.  OUr sinde of the aisle never accused the US troops of warcrimes on a regular basis, nor did our side protest in US military housing areas.

Nor did our side wear garish pink t-shirts and scream that we were commiting war crimes and crimes against huminity.

Nor did our side sponsor loons to pound drums outside the white house at all hours of the day and night.

Nor did we elevated loons to saint status such as Cindy Sheehan etc.

WHat hypocrisy.  We stated our beliefs, but did not work to cross purposes with our forces.  We did not travel to foreign lands and bad mouth our country like the left does.

Nor did Republican senators

Nor did Republican senators go to our enemies homeland just prior to the war and tell them that the American President could not be trusted.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Let's talk about hypocrisy, Jer.

Clinton unilaterally ordered the bombings of Serbia and Kosovo without submitting it first to either Congress or the UN for approval.

In fact the record shows that Congress repeatedly refused, in response to bills initiated by the House of Representatives, to authorize use of force in the former Yugoslavia.

They did provide funding for the troops rather than leave them without beans, bullets and bombs, and expressed support for them, but explicitly refused to support Clinton's unilateral decision.

Clinton's justification was exaggerated claims of genocide and mass ethnic cleansing.

It has been credibly estimated that due to Clinton's and NATO's tactic of bombing from miles in the air that 6,000 civilians, more than the estimated 2,000 killed in the ongoing civil war, were killed by US and NATO air strikes.

At least four times Clinton ordered military action without asking for congressional approval. At least twice Clinton acted on incorrect or exaggerated intelligence.

While it appears to be no longer a requirement for a President to obtain Congressional permission for military action, Clinton's repeated circumvention of both Congress and the UN demonstrated an amazing arrogance and lack of respect for separation of powers.

And incidentally, Clinton was acting on behalf of an Islamic group with ties to Osama bin Laden.

And who has been crucified for acting 'unilaterally'? The man who sought UN approval and at least twice obtained Congressional approval for concluding a ten-year-long conflict with a man who had basically purchased the UN Security Council and fired almost daily at coalition aircraft.

Yeah, let's talk about hypocrisy.

Why don't you send up a flare

Why don't you send up a flare when you finish with the multiple re-edits, and I'll try to respond.

Just kidding, TG.  But it will be later...maybe even tomorrow.  Have some things to attend to now.  Dinner, for one thing.

Until then, Jer

I learned never stop trying to put it more concisely.

And once you reply I can't edit it anymore.

So it's to your advantage to reply soonest so I can't add any more ammo.

Fire some more rounds if you got 'em.  I have to go to HuffPo and try to locate an item from a year or so ago for Rog the Shrubber, and then I'm planning to go to bed.

I'll check back tomorrow nite.

1.)  He campaigned on

1.)  He campaigned on unilaterally disarming before our enemies as well.

2.)  Afghanistan was the location where the mission was conceived, but was hardly the home base of AQ terrorism.  WHat little capability AQ had internal to Afghanistan was essentially destroyed by a handful of SF SOD-A teams who chased them from the country and into the Pakistani Tribal region of Waziristan where they remain today.

While AQ and Taliban inspired terrorists continually attempt to inflitrate Afghanistan in moderate numbers, they have not reclaimed the position they held prior to 2002 in any meaningful way other than to inspire fear which they could do from anywhere.

It was the same with Clinton

It was the same with Clinton. Clinton stared several wars and there way nary a word of protest from the "peaceful" liberals.

The leftists and the Old

The leftists and the Old Media will not seriously question The Obamatron on his war policies. He is the one they have been waiting for, after all. If he says "it is good", they will say "it is good", and bow their heads in worship.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

More Liberal hypocracy

Here's another example of Liberal hypocrisy:

Reagan invades Grenada to reinstate a democratically elected government and the liberals all protest and claim he's a war monger fighting an illegal war. Clinton invades Haiti for the same reason and the Liberals all agree it was the right thing to do.

The leftists are silent now? Shocking! Appalling! NOT.

For anyone to expect that amoral cowardly group to behave differently is either new to the planet and America, or has serious mental challenges.

The hypocrisy from the

The hypocrisy from the leftists with their gigantic agenda to take over this country never changes...and it never will.

MoveOn video: they are uninterested in listening

There is this great YouTube video of a MoveOn gathering (url below).  They are obviously uninterested in what anyone has to say.  If you are not willing to blindly follow they have only anger or disdain for you.
