steve irwin did more to elevate wild animals in the hearts and minds of the younger generation than anyone else i can think of.  he left behind a beautiful family, and many, many adoring fans.  on the other hand, bill maher has proven over and over again that he has no  redeeming qualities.  lionel's remark just proves he is lower than pond scum!

I became an agnostic Jew a few years ago when my mother died. I kept wondering to myself, why would God do this to my mother? Why would He take away a son's mother when he needed her now more than ever to make it through life? Was it because she was so sick and in pain that she needed to be freed from the shackles of life so she could go up to heaven? Was it because God enjoys putting my family through all sorts of suffering? Was it because I didn't believe religiously enough? I contemplated many of these thoughts in the interim after my mother died. After that, I simply couldn't accept that God was just anymore, or that perhaps God didn't exist.

That's why I became an agnostic. I didn't give up on God, per se, but I have a highly strained relationship with him. I believe this is also the explanation as to why Darwin became more secular. The loss of a loved one always brings so much doubt that there is a God for many of us. I don't know why it happens, but it just tends to for a lot of us converts to agnosticism, atheism or secularism.

This is also one of those things that conservatives tend to do to alienate moderates or liberals who might be inclined to re-register as Republicans. It's not so much that there is too much religion being preached, but rather that they tend to look with distain to us non-believers or semi-believers. That is certainly one of the reasons I simply cannot in good conscience join the Republican party. Why must I be part of something where I may agree with them 70 or 80 percent of the time, but it's the 20-to-30 percent that I dissagree with that is always unacceptable or, dare I say it, blasphemous?

Bill is so brave to take on the relatively benign turn the other cheek religion that is Christianity.

 Cuz hey, don't want to take on that other religion that beheads anyone it has deemed to have issued an insult against it. You know that religion that is misongynist, homophobic, and backward as all hell. You know that religion that tolerates no other religion. BILL IS SO BRAVE TO NOT INSULT THEM.

 GO BILL! You take on those christians. HEAD ON! Cuz hey, they won't kill you in the street like Theo Van Gogh now will they.
