AP Falsely Implied Obama Opposed All Cloning

Terry Jeffrey, editor-in-chief of CNSNews.com, writes that the Associated Press issued a dispatch that was remarkably incorrect. When it comes to the prospect of "therapeutic cloning" – creating human clones in a lab only to exploit them like lab rats – President Obama hasn’t been as clear as the AP suggested:

Obama’s Monday announcement that he was reversing President Bush’s policy of denying federal funding to stem-cell research that requires killing human embryos included what may be the most cynical of all Obama’s carefully crafted self-contradictions.

This one was designed to build political cover for promoting research that clones human beings for the specific purpose of killing them.

The headline and lead paragraph on an Associated Press story conveyed exactly the impression Obama desired to create. The headline said: "Obama calls cloning ‘dangerous, profoundly wrong.’" The lead paragraph said: "President Barack Obama says human cloning is ‘dangerous, profoundly wrong’ and has no place in society."

But this headline and lead are false. Obama said no such thing.

What Obama did say -- according to the official transcript of his remarks on the White House Website -- is this: "And we will ensure that our government never opens the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction. It is dangerous, profoundly wrong and has no place in our society, or any society."

Note that he did not close the door to human cloning, period. He simply closed the door to "the use" of human cloning for one purpose. He left the door open to "the use" of human cloning for other purposes.

Jeffrey also challenges the idea that "therapeutic cloning" isn't "reproductive" -- it reproduces a human being entirely, even if the scientist has no intention of giving the clone a normal human existence. But AP shouldn't be giving readers a false impression that Obama is more conservative on this issue than he really is.

As President Obama reversed Bush's policy against public funding for the destruction of human embryos to create new stem cell lines, he said the following in celebration:

This Order is an important step in advancing the cause of science in America. But let's be clear:  promoting science isn't just about providing resources - it is also about protecting free and open inquiry. It is about letting scientists like those who are here today do their jobs free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it's inconvenient - especially when it's inconvenient. It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda - and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology.

The above comment was immediately preceded in the speech by this:

We will develop strict guidelines, which we will rigorously enforce, because we cannot ever tolerate misuse or abuse. And we will ensure that our government never opens the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction.  It is dangerous, profoundly wrong, and has no place in our society, or any society.

If ethical constraints on science are appropriate, then statement #1 is an unfair characterization of the Bush policy.  If they aren't, then statement #2 is nothing but dogmatic "manipulation and coercion"--an emotional statement "based not on facts, but on ideology."  So which is it?

The fact that these two, completely contradictory statements appear to have passed in the very same speech side by side without notice or challenge disturbs me.  It seems people are so used to hearing certain talking points that they've ceased to think about what they're hearing.  This is not good.

Explanations are foriegn after Bush Administration

After 8 years of Bush, just doing whatever he wanted it is hard for society(especially here at NB) to adapt to a president that actually communicates with the public. The sentence #1 is called acknowledging that there are two sides to the debate and that neither is entirely correct. While clonig is dangerous and wrong, like Obama said, there are advantages to stem cell research that was too scientific for Bush to understand. As a result, Bush veteod any stem cell research and set back potential advancements in this field. Bush put his ideologies and misinformation of stem cells ahead of scientific advancement.
A common misconception is that embryos need to be used to harvest stem cells. Madison, WI is a leader in stem cell research and have figured out ways to grow their own or to revert cells back into stem cells. It is hard to find when we mess with nature too much and that is part of Obama's message about cloning. Madison can also grow petri dishes of heart cells that beat individually.
Then you have idiots like Rush, who opens his mouth when he "is out of his element", smearing Michale J. Fox because he had an actual vested interest in what stem cells can do for Parkinson's and other degenerative diseases. That's just Rush though, only interested in what benefits will come to me instead of what advantages will be given to others.

chronic... Too scientific

chronic...

Too scientific for Bush to understand that embryonic stem cell research being forced to be paid by the tax-payers was wrong....hmmm...btw...it was an EO that O undid.

You are a real whiz-kid...I'm not going to bother to repeat what I and others have posted here about all of this...you are what you are...and doing your job as usual.

Sounds like science isn't conservatives strong point

I meant that Bush failed to understand that stem cell research can be used for good and I'd be willing for my tax dollars to go to curing diseases like alzheimers.

Luckily Obama is taking the country back in the right direction.  It's not right or left, but what is best for the most people.

Pros and Cons of Embryonic and Adult Stem Cells
Cell Comparisons: Embryonic vs. Adult

There are significant medical and scientific differences between embryonic and adult stem cell research and therapy. Here is a comparison between the two types, including some of the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Embryonic Stem Cell Advantages
1. Flexible—appear to have the potential to make any cell
2. Immortal—one ES cell line can potentially provide an endless supply of cells with
    defined characteristics
3. Availability—embryos from in vitro fertilization clinics

Embryonic Stem Cell Disadvantages
1. Difficult to differentiate uniformly and homogeneously into a target tissue
2. Immunogenic—ES cells from a random embryo donor are likely to be rejected
    after transplantation
3. Tumorigenic—Capable of forming tumors or promoting tumor formation
4. Destruction of developing human life

Adult Stem Cell Advantages
1. Special adult-type stem cells from bone marrow and from umbilical cord have been
isolated recently which appear to be as flexible as the embryonic type
2. Already somewhat specialized—inducement may be simpler
3. Not immunogenic—recipients who receive the products of their own stem cells will
    not experience immune rejection
4. Relative ease of procurement—some adult stem cells are easy to harvest (skin,
muscle, marrow, fat), while others may be more difficult to obtain (brain stem cells).
Umbilical and placental stem cells are likely to be readily available
5. Non-tumorigenic—tend not to form tumors
6. No harm done to the donor

Adult Stem Cell Disadvantages
1. Limited quantity—can sometimes be difficult to obtain in large numbers
2. Finite—may not live as long as ES cells in culture
3. Less flexible (with the exception of #1 above)—may be more difficult to reprogram to
    form other tissue types

Embryonic stem cells have 3 advantages, Adult cells have 6.

Embryonic stem cells have 4 disadvantages, Adult cells have 3.

Gee, which one does it make sense to focus on?!

Hope and Change= Despair and Socialism

YOU were an EMBRYO at one time. Where would you be if some ...

... "scientist" had harvested your STEM CELLS?  IDIOT.

Well, obviously...

...this is just an honest mistake!

Obomba wouldn't allow some sort of chicanery with the Associated (with terrorists) Press, would he?

Nah!

I'm reminded of a letter to

I'm reminded of a letter to the editor in our local newspaper from someone who admitted she voted for Obama. She said she didn't know that he was opposed to banning partial birth abortion and the Born Alive Infant Protection Act. She was troubled to have found out the truth after the election was over and said she would never have voted for him if she'd known about his stand on these issues beforehand. Why were so many so willing to believe so many lies?

Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of the tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men. - Ayn Rand

Queen... The msm/leftist

Queen...

The msm/leftist party counting on lemmings with their 24/7 rhetoric...and their intentional OMISSIONS.

I really wished people would do a little searching, reading, investigating of their own before voting...

Oh well...the far left in ALL walks of life depend on them NOT doing so.

Cloning Too Expensive

The government is wasting tax payer dollars (hey they're good at it). Even if the technology to clone and harvest embryonic stem cells becomes possible, nobody will ever utilize it.  The problem is that it is extremely EXPENSIVE to clone a human and harvest stem cells from the cloned embryo.

Adult stem cells on the other hand can be harvested from the human nose at a fraction of the cost.  Scientists not on the dole recognize that adult stem cell technology is a viable path. Embryonic stem cell technology will never compete with it in the market place.

Of course...

Of coures, Obama is for cloning. He has no ethics. If a born living, breathing baby can still be aborted in his ethics, then why wouldn't human cloning be ok.

At least those words are found in the transcript. There's a big old thread down the page where I'm a troll for pointing out the words in the headline aren't even it the transcript!

You're irrational if you don't want the new president to succeed - Gingrich

President Obama is duplicitous in his speech about everything

President Obama is duplicitous in his speech about everything. Most normal people would call that lying. He made it very clear, on the campaign trail, his extremely low regard for human life. Human life is only valuable if he needs it. It has no value simply because God created it. Thus babies are expendable if they are inconvenient and embryos are always useful for body parts. Who is next? Who will our President authorize to kill next?

The U.S. Constitution and Baby Killing

Where is it mandated or permitted for the government at the federal level to engage in this funding anyway?  Or, quite honestly, MOST funding that they engage in.  Furthermore, I fail to see where this killing of babies is mandated or permitted within the Constitution.

For our nation to have allowed the Tyranny of the Masses and the free access to our wealth for the purpose of vote buying is unforgivable.  WE are all to blame.  Yes, even those who "did not vote for this."  For decades we have allowed the nation to take steps towards its own destruction, never stopping to remember that the water running downhill does eventually reach bottom.  We have accepted comfort at the expense of Liberty.

The current situation is the result of "democracy".  Do you get a greater sum by adding zeroes? Why is it that the vote of an educated (formal or self) individual who has extensively and exhaustively studied the issues and history at hand (and may have come to a different conclusion than a similar person), a person who has contributed at every level of society by abiding laws, paying taxes, working hard, raised a family, etc., counts the same as a person who drives drunk, beats their wife, doesn't give a crap about education in any way (for themselves or other), doesn't know who all their children are or even if they live, etc?

Why does their vote count the same as yours?  Why does your vote count the same as theirs?  This country was founded as a Republic, with enough looseness to let folks go about their lives and make something of it. It was not founded as a warm body count, because the framers of our nation knew their history, they knew what happened when the plebes figured out that they could vote for their "bread and circus" on someone else's tab.

ALL politicians, both major parties, and all minor parties are guilty of doing this (vote buying) WHEN THEY CAN.  We have taken a great idea and structure (Constitution) and marched it neatly down the road to bankruptcy in all forms; financial, moral, ethical, etc.  The folks running the show have focused on learning how to GET the job (politician) instead of learning HOW to DO the job right.  The administration's double-standard and double-talk is typical of most, if not all, politicians.

Remember also the tactic of "de-humanizing" in order to justify the oppression, murder, and general disregard of another person.  The Nazis said "Jews, Gypsies, Poles, Freemasons, etc. aren't people, they are animals.  It is okay to kill and torture animals."  The left demonize "right-wingers" to be able to consider them less that human. Communists eliminate the "politically incorrect." The same thing is being done when people decide a baby in not a person until a certain time.  Who decides?  When does it end? Where does it end?  Why is the baby only a human after birth?  Am I not a human beacuse I am a "right-winger" and an "evil man-oppressor of women"and all the nasty names I have been called for man, many years? When a person is de-humanized because of creed, color, life-development stage, geography, gender, etc., they become marginalized and fair game for the Tyranny of the Masses.

Now, I describe myself as "anti-abortion."  I know there are some of you who will take exception to that and say that I should use the term "pro-life."  First of all, I do not accept "political correctness" from anyone.  I respect your choice to be "pro-life" and I understand the emotional impact of that label. I use the lable that I do because I am not "pro-life" when it comes to murders, rapist, arsonists, terrorist and the like.  I am also not "pro-life" in regards to socialized medicine, agricultural livestock, hunting, etc.  I hold "pro-choice" to a similar standard.

I believe in a deep respect and honoring of life, to respect that which you need to kill in order to surive (meaning agricultureand hunting.)  To those who have left the protections of society to commit heinous acts, I feel no remorse in the act of insuring they never commit such a crime again.  In combat, a man must kill to see victory for the safety of their people.  A man does not lightly kill any of the Divine's creatures, be it cattle, goats, dogs, etc. A man kills only from necessity, never for pleasure.

I am not, however, interested in using future life to prolong my own.  I will not kill children, those born or unborn for any reason. It is every REAL man's duty and honor to protect at the expense of THEIR life all children (and women for that matter.)  Sexist?  Not if you really think about it. What other greater purpose can men serve?  A womans proud duty is also to protect those very same children.  When it comes right down to it, a society exists as a mechanism by which the future (children) are preserved.  Children represent the goodness and hope for our people.

Lives and life-spans are at their longest and highest quality in history.  This has been accomplished without ESCR.  Mostly it has occured through folks having enough freedom and wealth to simply eat better food and drink cleaner water.  I do feel deeply for folks afflicted with a terrible health circumstance.  I think it is important for us as a people to help those who need it. Note that I said "us as a people", not the government.  Like all things of this nature, regardless of what the government decides, we still have to do what is right.  The responsibility comes down to us.

Some would ask if I would use ESCR to save one of my children.  The answer is no.  I would not kill another of my children, a copy of my child (who would be their own person) or someone else's child.  I would do what I could for my own with the resources I have, but not at the expense of another's wrongly taken life.

People get wrapped up in the "can we do this" instead of giving attention to the "should we do this."

Ideas such as ESCR and abortion promote that we can borrow from the future of life for the convenience of our present life.  This does not work in ANY area of life. We can't borrow wealth from our children anymore than we can borrow their life and still hope that they will exist. What future does a nation have which kills off its women and children?
