The Oscar folks selected Bill Maher to hand out the Best Documentary awards on ABC on Sunday night (his old TV home before he mocked our "cowardly" pilots six days after 9/11), and he was quick to note his film "Religulous" was not among the nominated. He suggested it wasn't because he made a junky film, but because the topic was too controversial:
"Now as a producer and a star of my own documentary this year, the one about religion that didn't get nominated. I know, it's a touchy subject. But someday, we all have to confront the notion that our silly gods cost the world too greatly. But there I go, ruining the ending."
But if the topic was too controversial to be even nominated, let alone win, why was Maher allowed to come out and spew his atheism on ABC?
Perhaps Maher should have pondered that he might be the opposite of Sally Field. It's not about God. It's about you. They don't like you. They really, really don't like you.
Maher tried not to sound bitter as he hailed documentarians as our "windows on the world" (cliche alert) and claimed "They give us the truth." That is a very broad brush, like saying every comedy movie is funny.

I would disagree that
February 23, 2009 - 10:23 ET by JasonCI would disagree that atheism - and let's not make the mistake of assuming that that it's a monolithic, homogenized system of thought - promotes the idea that there is no right and wrong. Atheists can be ethical and even moral; I know of no rule that claims one must be a Nietzschean nihilist in order to reject the idea of creative omnipotence. Atheism simply rejects the ideas that:
1. Said morals and ethics must be grounded in a single, often-contradictory text for which we have no realistic basis to accept as legitimate.
2. Said morals and ethics must be strengthened by participating in various rituals and be allowed to shape personal beliefs/behaviors.
Yes, atheism requires a system of absolutist thought just like very other religion; so how is it inherently inferior?
It is extremely condescending to suggest that it asks nothing and gives nothing in return. Not everyone who fails to feel fulfilled by your preferred enchantments is necessarily dead inside.
1. Said morals and ethics
February 23, 2009 - 10:37 ET by dvdaughtry1. Said morals and ethics must be grounded in a single, often-contradictory text for which we have no realistic basis to accept as legitimate.
That does not describe the Bible in any way. First find your contradiciton(s) and second argue against the historical accuracy of the "Text".
2. Said morals and ethics must be strengthened by participating in various rituals and be allowed to shape personal beliefs/behaviors.
Again, that does not describe Christianity. Christianity is not about "must do", but "chose to".
You can believe what you want. Kudos for conceding that Atheims is, in fact, religous. However, if you are going to argue against something, at least have the courtesy to know what the other side does/does not do.
You trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?
You might do well to notice
February 23, 2009 - 10:46 ET by JasonCYou might do well to notice that I didn't say "The Bible" and I didn't say "Christianity." Since there are hundreds of versions of each of the major religions, my comments are an extremely general summation of what most agnostics and atheists dislike about organized religion. And if a person raised by church-going parents perceives contradiction and perceives that his/her church requires participation in certain rituals and beliefs in order to belong, and said person doesn't believe that that is the way to true spirituality, then that person is surely justified in rejecting it.
As to my two points, since you immediately assumed I was harping on Christianity; first, there are many, many possible readings of The Bible - and any other text for that matter. Some people, biblical scholars included, believe it can be contradictory; which is fine, really, since it was written by so many different people at different times. As to #2, just last week on BOR, Laura Ingraham was using the Pope's recent remarks in order to condemn what she charmingly calls Cafeteria Catholicism. And indeed, there are many who believe that a person cannot call oneself a member of a particular religion unless they subscribe unerringly to every single point of dogma and scripture.

I wouldn't dare insult your intelligence. But you are mistaken. The article under discussion is maher's movie, which does not single out Christianity (I think; I haven't seen it). And the post to which I initially replies does not mention Christianity; it is a critique of atheism, and that is the critique to which I responded.
Love to see them, and know the scholars who believe that. Stop making claims and give some support.
Just the first example that comes to mind: "as to the legitimacy of its claims to be
of serious ancient authenticity, there can be little doubt in
terms of modern Bible scholarship, evaluation of documents preserved,
and the historical record of those documents' origins, that the
Bible is clearly the work of ancient writers. As such, it clearly
gives us a window into the thoughts of ancient peoples from who
much of modern ethical thinking has developed. Thus the Bible, and whatever insights and wisdom can be
found in it, must incontrovertibly be accepted as a great gift
to the modern world. Yet that, alone, does not make it the infallible,
inerrant Word of God -- a claim that would have to be evaluated
separately on its merits." - Davis D. Danizier, Bibilical Perspectives and Christian Contradictions
In other words, the Bible can be viewed as a collection of insightful and important allegories on morality and human nature. But to assume that one's preferred version of the Bible is infallibly correct is arrogant and should be approached with thought and questioning, not absolutism.
What are you, in the AP? Some, many, blah. Give some specifics and stop
being vague. Again, since we are talking about Christianity, this does
not describe it. The New Testament is clear that no one can keep the
whole law, thus the sacrifice of Jesus. It's hard to debate when you don't have a clue about the other side. Study up, and get back to us.
You're awfully condescending. I've been respectful thus far and have responded to your posts and refrained from trolling. Don't patronize me, and don't assume you know a damn thing about my background.
You could start with NBs boards. They are awash in claims that, for instance, one cannot be a Christian while being pro-choice or believing gay marriage is legitimate; or, God forbid, actually being gay. Laura Ingraham was on BOR just last week referring to this as Cafeteria Catholicism - picking and choosing what aspects of religion one wishes to believe in - and decrying it based on recent remarks from the Pope. The stupefyingly obvious rebuttal to this is that it presupposes that there is an absolutist reading of the Bible that trumps all others. When it comes down to it, The Bible is a text, a collection of words and semantics, and interpretations of it can be as wildly diverse as interpretations of Ulysses or The Iliad. This is not an argument about religion, it is one about critical, analytical thought.

I wonder how advanced we would be today if they had continued their studies over the intervening centuries and what would have occurred of the rest of the world, especially the Europeans, would have overcome their racial bias and accepted their studies of nature.
It's similar to what happened to the Greeks and the Library of Alexandria. So much knowledge, so much possibilities, lost to future generations all because of bias and fear of someone else's beliefs, someone else's culture. What a shame!

That is not proof, it's not even a valid hypothesis.
The orgin?
February 23, 2009 - 22:17 ET by CobraManYou sure like to avoid the obvious, don't you?
If DNA strands can form spontaneously, like you claim, then why DON"T they form spontaneously in any environment that is conductive to that formation, like in the nucleus of a cell? Why doesn't a DNA strand form spontaneously inside a living cell? That doesn't happen. Why does a new DNA strand require another existing DNA strand in order to form?
Also, why don't they form in the PMCR process (which is used in DNA fingerprinting) where existing DNA strands are replicated over and over again as to increase the DNA sample size? If DNA strands could form spontaneously, do not require an existing strand in order to form, that PMCR process itself should form new, unique strands. The DNA fingerprinting process would not work as the original sample would be contaminated by those new, unique strands. But that doesn't happen. Once again, why does a new DNA strand require another DNA strand in order to form?
The reason they DON'T form spontaneously is because they CAN'T.

February 23, 2009 - 22:58 ET by CobraManWhat? It IS simple deductive reasoning. You're not willing to use that reasoning, but that's not MY fault. That fault falls squarely on YOUR shoulders.
You don't want evidence, don't want to use your own deductive reasoning. What YOU want is for God to pick you up and shake some sense into you, to literally grab you and scream I EXIST in your face. That's NOT going to happen.God doesn't want you to simply know that he exists, he wants you to LEARN that he exists so that you can expand your own knowledge and, in the process of discovery, strengthen your own intelligence, just like a school teacher does.
You have to find the evidence, the absolute proof, of the existence of God for yourself, using the intelligence that God gave you. That''s were Faith comes from. I can help guide you, show you how to use deductive reasoning to find that absolute proof for yourself, but you, and ONLY you, can accept that reasoning and find your own absolute proof, find your own faith.

February 23, 2009 - 23:53 ET by CobraManIt's obvious that you don't believe in the existence in God. But that's not enough for you. You also want everyone else to believe that God doesn't exist.
This is apparent in the fact that you don't even want to DEBATE the existence of God. Your flippant responses to my comments demonstrates this perfectly.
Why even ASK for "proof" if you're so unwilling to accept any? I'll tell you why: You don't want proof, you just want to sow the same doubt that you have on other people. You want US to doubt the existence of God.
Well, guess what, NCguy, you're NOT fomenting any doubt in me, or just about anyone else here for that matter.

February 24, 2009 - 00:10 ET by NCguyI don't try to cast doubt. The fact the god can not be proven can not be debunked. Everything that's been said here by you believer is window dressing to dance around the fact that your only evidence is you faith. I believe therefore he is. No logical argument can be created because it's a flawed premise. The bottom line is the argument is irrelevant. Your reality accepts that faith proves the existance of god. Mine doesn't. The problem is, we can't just agree to disagree. Schizophranics experience a reality that is very different from ours. They can tell you all day long the voices they hear are real. However, you can not agree to disagree about the reality of the voices they hear. The voices they hear are a manifestation of thier condition. The evidence exists, NCguy
February 23, 2009 - 21:02 ET by CobraManThe evidence exists, NCguy, yo just don't want to see it. This evidence is the fact that DNA can not spontaneously assemble itself. No ONCE in over 4 BILLIONS years of life on earth has a new, different, DNA chain been created spontaneously OUTSIDE OF A LIVING CELL. If they could, we'd be finding them all over the place. Both in the sediments and in today's active environments. They should be appearing every day all over the planet. But they don't, because they CAN'T.
If DNA chains can spontaneously form INDEPENDENTLY from existing DNA strands, then there should be MANY other life forms, other types of cells (or even basic structures like a virus), who's DNA, and resulting cell structure, is radically different from all others and functions differently from all others and DOESN'T require a template in which to create another DNA strand.
The only thing CLOSE to a "new" or "different" structure is the mitochondria that exists with a living cell, but NOT outside of it. Why don't we find mitochondria like life forms existing outside of a cell? Not even a virus can form OUTSIDE of a living cell! And, like all other life forms, it uses it OWN DNA as a template in which to replicate itself.
This is because DNA can NOT spontaneously arrange itself into patterns necessary for even a basic cell function to occur, let alone ALL cell functions which depend on DNA to regulate those functions. It needs a template in which to construct itself, to replicate itself.
If that DNA can NOT spontaneously construct itself, if it must use existing DNA as a template in which to build more DNA strands, then that first DNA strand, the one which all other life forms on this planet copied, MUST have been constructed by a controlling influence, a controlling intelligence. We call that controlling intelligence GOD!

Here's you proof, NCguy
February 23, 2009 - 15:45 ET by CobraManYou want proof? Look at your own genes. ALL life on earth requires DNA replication. Cells can not divide and survive without FIRST replicating the DNA in it's nucleus. Where is the ORIGINAL template for the DNA?
Without a template in which to build upon, a DNA strand randomizes it's structure during assembly and any cell based upon that new structure can not function as required, so it quickly dies. This is true for EVERY life form we have discovered. So, I ask you again, where is the ORIGINAL template from which all current life forms eventually evolved?
Do you know where that original template came from? It came from GOD! It was assembled purposely through a controlling intelligence. It was not randomly assembled through "natural" processes.
If that original template assembled itself through a random process, then there should be BILLIONS of separate, individual DNA strands laying all over the earth right now. There should be TRILLIONS of completely different cell types that don't function like other cells that exists on the earth based upon randomly created DNA strands.. But we don't find anything like that, do we? Why is that? Could it be because the first DNA strand didn't assemble itself randomly? If it wasn't a random process, then it must have been a controlled process. Who controlled that process? God.

February 24, 2009 - 03:39 ET byI agree with most of your feelings but your doctrine on this point is wrong.
Again, that does not describe Christianity. Christianity is not about "must do", but "chose to".
Jesus was quite specific on what one "must" do. The fact that you don't know this is shocking, but emblematic of the pervasiveness of the false doctrine that fills the land.
Pay attention to what you MUST do....
John 3:1-8 (King James Version)
John 3
1. There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Why atheists are so obsessed with God?
February 23, 2009 - 07:59 ET by garyganuI have never understood why atheists are so obsessed with God. Bill Maher mentions God more often than practicing Christians do during public events.
I first noticed this when I used to post on "Yahoo Answers" in the category of "religion and spirituality". I was shocked to find that 50% of the participants in that sub-category were atheists. The atheists were constantly mocking, discrediting and insulting people of faith.
Also, I have been insulted and then banned from a liberal web-site because I posted about creation.
I never understood why people who don't believe in God, spend so much time and energy discussing God. Why are they so emotional invested in trying to prove that there is no higher meaning to life and that God does not exist?

So, tell me, NCguy, why do you avoid the debate and resort to demeaning, misleading, and, quite frankly, obscure and nonsensical comments ("that's what the Muslims say, shouldn't you be a Muslim?") for my, and others, arguments and/or comments?
Be honest with yourself, NCguy, you're not looking for debate. Your mind is made up (There is no God!), closed to further debate, and no amount of debating is going to change that closed mind. You're right and everyone else is a fool for not recognizing your superior intellect, not "admitting" that you are right and they are wrong.
That's why you resort to insulting others for their beliefs. That's why you resort to describing any other possible explanation of the nature of the universe and how it all started as "mythology." You have YOUR belief (which you can't prove) and anyone who doesn't believe what you believe (and can't "prove" to YOUR satisfaction that their beliefs are closer to reality than your own, an impossible task as you don't want to admit that you may be wrong) is a fool, or "childish." February 23, 2009 - 20:21 ET by R D HelmInteresting that you would make such an ignorant assertion, given the fact that the very book you are disparaging predicted, nearly two thousand years ago, among many other things, that the Jews would reclaim their homeland for the third and final time, and within one generation of that event, there would be three successive invasions of that nation that would signal the end of the rule of man on this planet.
One of the invaders mentioned will have the ability to field a 200 million man army.
The year Israel was founded for the third time was 1948, and the successive invasions will be carried out by Russia, China and Iran.
Take a really hard look at what is going on today. Russia, China and Iran are on the ascent, while this nation is rapidly declining.
We are fast approaching the end of a generational period concerning 1948, too, regardless of whose calendar one is applying.
Oh, and only one nation on Earth has the ability to field an army of 200 million soldiers, and that would be China.

Another victim of false
February 24, 2009 - 04:00 ET byAnother victim of false doctrine. I am sorry to inform you NCguy that only the false churches that have poisoned your mind have a faith that is "unjustifiable", if I might correct your spelling.
The true church of Christ receives something as a DEPOSIT on all the promises that Christ made. The TRUE church....comes with PROOF.
Mark 16:15-20 (King James Version)
15. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
As you can see the true church of Christ has their salvation CONFIRMED by the Lord providing the SIGNS that HE illuminated. Because the Catholics, baptists etc, don't teach that is of no import, IT'S IN THE BIBLE. So you're still responsible for the knowledge. You won't be able in that day to fall back on the fact that false teaching filled the land. The Lord told you that it would be that way.
The TRUE CHURCH of JESUS CHRIST receives a Spirit that TESTIFIES ABOUT JESUS CHRIST, not the "mute" spirit that no one knows they have spoken of by Billy Graham and his ilk. Or the popes "ilk" for that matter.
John 15:26
"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
Now the bible tells you that the Holy Spirit is NOT MUTE. That in fact it will TESTIFY about Jesus Christ's "reality". Just because the fake churches don't teach that you're still responsible for the knowledge because it's in the Word!
2 Corinthians 1:21-23 (New International Version)
21. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22. set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Just because some fake church tells you that you can receive the Holy Spirit but you have to "take it on faith" that you got it, DON'T MAKE IT TRUE! The bible declares that the Holy Ghost IS proof that everything Jesus said is true in fact the Holy Ghost will SWEAR TO IT. It will act as a WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION and give TESTIMONY about the efficacy of the blood of Jesus as it relates to salvation.
Romans 8:15-17 (King James Version)
15. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
The Lord didn't want you to change your life, pick up your cross and follow Him on a lark. He provided proof but there's only one way to get it. Acts 2:38. Look it up. When you follow the teachings of the false church you get NO PROOF because the Lord doesn't anoint LIES. But when you do the few simple things he demanded that constitute the "new birth" spoken of in John 3:1-8 and are baptized in Jesus name, not the titles Father SOn and Holy Ghost, you get what He promised, the WAY He promised it and it does ALL that it was prophesied to do!
So you are saying the TRUE
February 24, 2009 - 08:13 ET by NCguySo you are saying the TRUE church is one that presents truth as a collective delusion. So anyone who doesn't see the truth hasn't been at the indoctrination long enough?

Prove that God doesn't
February 23, 2009 - 10:37 ET by AmaliaProve that God doesn't exist. You have absolutely no way of knowing whether He exists or not. Atheism is just as faith-based as any other religion. So no, atheism is NOT the truth.
When you think about it...
February 23, 2009 - 10:49 ET by CortillaenAtheism, by definition is the belief in the lack of any higher power. It is not a rational state of mind at all, contrary to claims, because it has decided that there is no God and actively filters incoming information to support that belief. This is blind faith. A truly rational person should never reach the point of atheism, because the jump there from being agnostic is one of accepting the absence of proof as proof of absence. A rational agnostic, my former condition, is one who accepts that they do not know one way or the other, and evaluates evidence as it is rather than searching for ways to dismiss it.

Let's look at atheist logic:
Big Bang - The entire universe and all it's wonder and complexities just happened. By sheer luck. How pathetic. That's like saying if you put all the pieces of a watch in a box eventually there will be a poof! and you'll magically have a completed watch.
The existence of God - If you can't see Him, then He doesn't exist. Do you not believe in gravity either? If you drop an object, you do not see anything pulling it to the ground. Now, wait for it...I know it's coming...you're preparing your grand comeback...
You can measure gravity! HAHAHA stoopid christians! (btw, how 'bout you go to iran and spout off about allah. Let us know how that goes...)
Yes, we can measure gravity. Big deal. How would you go about "measuring" God? What would you look for? How would you know you've found Him? I have hard evidence in my life that I interpret as God working for my benefit. Your "measurement" would be coincidence. That's where the faith enters. Everyone has faith of one kind or another. I have faith that God exists, He loves everyone and works for the good of those that serve Him, and that when I die my soul will enter into eternal communion with Him. You have faith that everything in this world happened by accident, if anything good happens it's a coincidence, and when you die your essence ceases to exist so you better make the most of your life here and try to make everyone's life miserable because they're happier than you.

I said I didn't care if HBO was free for life, as long as this commie-loving God hater was on HBO, I would never allow it into my house. Well, she changed her sales pitch a bit and tried to sell the other shows, and I interrupted again with my same question. February 23, 2009 - 09:42 ET by snaggletoothieWhy are atheists so emotionally invested in the issue of God? Because thry have unresolved issues with their father. Daddy stuff is very personal. And when you're so angry with your father that you take the issue cosmic, you're looking at a defient and unstable personality. A personality so disturbed that a battle rages on most everywhere, most all the time.
Yes, the Truth is annoying
February 23, 2009 - 09:55 ET by moderncommentaries83And the Truth is that there is a God, and that He expect certain things from us. So I guess it's "annoying" when God says X behavior is wrong, and we should act accordingly.
Many in Hollywood, Maher included, are in for a rude awakening at the end of their lives, when their contempt for God and His natural law will demand an answer and explanation from them. So I can see how that would be "annoying", too. Eternal damnation sucks.
But that's not the point. If Maher is free to spout his bigoted nonsense (and it is nonsense, because no honest remarks about religion have ever crossed that man's lips), then religious persons are free to worship - even publicly - as they see fit.
Atheism is a religion with a belief system that says there is no God, but some "inherent" morality instilled in man. Both are protected under the Constitution.
And when Maher insults the belief of a majority of the world - as many people believe in God or gods - and sticks his thumb in the eye of average America, he gets pissy when there's a backlash?
Puh-leeze.

One inescapable conclusion
February 23, 2009 - 11:26 ET by HelenSOne inescapable conclusion I cannot help reaching is that athiests are really massively egotistical. Even in their self-described humility, they tout their humility with great pride (and revile or excoriate you if you happen to disagree with them or doubt their sincerity).
How else do you explain that the highest form of intelligence or thought or source of knowledge, wisdom, and truth they have or acknowledge is themselves? They select themselves or some other human as the standard for intelligence, observe that they can live up to that standard, and always feel either good about themselves or superior to everyone else.
If that's not arrogant, I really don't know what is.

Because there is no truth
February 23, 2009 - 14:09 ET by moderncommentaries83PROVE that there "is no truth", please...
Because if there is no truth, then the laws of man are not binding either. Were I an atheist and believed there were no consequences in the afterlife, then the only rule to live by would be: DON'T GET CAUGHT.
Murder, robbery, assault, mayhem...all of it would be fair game because what does it matter? If there is no truth save my own personal worldview, then I'm not bound to obey the laws of God or man.

You missed my point
February 23, 2009 - 15:26 ET by moderncommentaries83You missed my point completely.
If there is no God, why in the world would anyone be bound by the laws of "society"? Where did that order and those laws come from, if not God? I would not be an "utter lunatic and menace" because there is no foundation for justifying any laws or morality - no matter how secular or religious. Those "laws" and "society" would be like God in atheists' view: non-existent.
Order does not happen on its own. Mankind's decency is not self-taught. Societal structures are not happy conincidences.
God is the binding force on all mankind's morality and all just laws. Without Him, a person isn't beholden to any laws.
And, no, there is nothing in this world that can shake my belief in God and His Church. I've studied, I've learning and I'm still studying and learning. Everything makes 100% absolute sense and I'm confident enough in my faith to know it won't be shattered or swayed.

To paraphrase Monty Python
February 23, 2009 - 15:39 ET by Jack BauerTo paraphrase Monty Python what's atheism ever done for me? Except --- there's no long list to disprove the theory.
Until very very recently in human history, all great art, political thought, literature, science and technology came from religion and religious people. Chrtistianity and Judaism being prime monotheistic sources.
Even other civilizations were driven by some branch of religious practice. Atheism is at the bottom of all civilizing influences.
In fact, the worst mass crimes against people in human history (almnost exclusively in the 20th Century) have occured after the Godless creed of Communism, Fascism and Socialism has taken hold of nation -- or more accurately, the nation's LEADERS.

Nothing to something?? What happened? The only explanation is that some Higher Being started all of this! There is no other explanation. Where did all of this happen? Only an omnipresent being, that's the only way! You are who you are because you were born, you didn't just happen! Explain why all the universe just happened without something already being there. One made it happen or SomeThing making it that way. Just happened out of nothing, yeah, right! You exist because Someone greater than you made it so. Deal with it! You wouldn't exist without Him! Deal with it! All that is is because of God! You and I are here because of a God that created something from nothing, disprove it!

Do you honestly believe
February 24, 2009 - 11:00 ET by TexasteacherDo you honestly believe that the entire universe just randomly blinked into existence?
Just to help everyone out, answer these simple questions:
What caused the universe to come into existence?
What is the purpose of the universe, or more importantly, human beings?
What happens to your conscienceness/essence/soul when you die?
We're all eager for your vast knowledge and teachings.

my current belief in what
February 24, 2009 - 14:21 ET by NCguymy current belief in what caused the universe to come into existance is probably the same answer as yours if I asked you what caused your god to come into existance.Though I have to ask what you mean by universe. Are you talking the space that physical material exist with in? Or the materials themselves?
Purpose is a value question. The answer is irrelevant.
Depends how you define soul. But again, it's irrelevant. The only thing that can be answered is what happens to YOU when you die? The answer is you change state but continue to exist.
my current belief in what
February 24, 2009 - 14:25 ET by botgmy current belief in what caused the universe to come into existance is probably the same answer as yours if I asked you what caused your god to come into existance.
not so as the universe (including time itself, that's why they call it the space/time continum) came into existance and is finite. A God by definition is infinite.

Keep going if you like but the complexities of life does not offer proof of an intelligent creator. I would possibly conceed that it may be circumstanstial evidence but little more.
This still all comes down to accepting a version of the bible as the lving word of god. And by accepting it mean faith that it's the living word. The problem is, this faith puts humans above the laws of nature which explains the evolution of agricultural civilazations. Following this world view puts our culture at war with the harmonious natural world that worked up until 10,000 years ago. This lead to the great forgetting.
