WaPo Pushes Caroline Kennedy Victimhood: 'Does a Glass Ceiling Persist?'

Caroline Kennedy’s nebulous withdrawal from her bid to be appointed to the U.S. Senate by the virtue of her genes drew an odd front-page story in Friday’s Washington Post: "Does a Glass Ceiling Persist in Politics? Kennedy’s Withdrawal Illustrates a Double Standard, Some Say." Reporter Anne Kornblut’s "some" were Democratic women like Dee Dee Myers and Donna Brazile, and she complained that other Senate appointments (Bennet, Burris, Kaufman) have all been male. She began:

With her abrupt exit this week from consideration for the Senate, Caroline Kennedy added her name to a growing list: women who have sought the nation's highest offices only to face insurmountable hurdles.

Like Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin before her, Kennedy illustrated what some say is an enduring double standard in the handling of ambitious female office-seekers. Even as more women step forward as contenders for premier political jobs, observers say, few seem able to get there.

Anne Kornblut is feeling Sarah Palin’s pain? That’s a little strange from a woman who pushed the GOP ticket not to push "phony umbrage" about sexism last fall. Here’s the first draft of history from Kornblut when Palin broke the Republican "glass ceiling" last year:

Though it was high in shock value, the Palin pick left bruised feelings among the short-list contenders who were not picked -- and infuriated some Republican officials who privately said McCain had gone out on a limb, unnecessarily, without laying the groundwork for such an unknown. Two senior Republican officials close to Mitt Romney and Tim
Pawlenty said they had both been rudely strung along and now "feel manipulated."

"They now know that they were used as decoys, well after McCain had decided not to pick them," one Republican involved in the process said.

Perhaps the funniest thing about the Post’s "Some Say" headline is that a lot of people told Kornblut her glass-ceiling thesis was lame:

Many political observers dismissed the notion that Kennedy's difficulties had anything to do with gender, noting that she came across as a novice and sought appointment just as the national tolerance for family dynasties seemed to ebb. Hank Sheinkopf, a longtime Democratic strategist, said any suggestion that Kennedy was treated unfairly because of her sex was "nonsense."

When Kornblut turns the page to the Caroline-was-robbed crowd, it’s amusing to see them defend Caroline’s thin resume, and remember the media attacks on Sarah Palin:

Several Democratic strategists said the Kennedy conundrum was in part unique to her and in part reflective of what other high-profile women encountered this year. Dee Dee Myers, press secretary in Bill Clinton's White House, said it was difficult to untangle questions about scrutiny Kennedy faced as a woman from those she faced as a New Yorker, where attention is fierce, or as a celebrity or member of the fabled Kennedy family.

But Myers said that "questions about her résumé absolutely have to do with her gender."

"I don't see it as thin, I see it as unconventional," Myers said of Kennedy's résumé, which includes work as an author and schools fundraiser. "I don't see why running a hedge fund is better preparation for doing the people's business than writing books or working in the school system and raising a family."

Political strategist Donna Brazile noted the contrast between the excitement surrounding Obama's inauguration this week and the general public attitude toward women in office, one that she said helped drive Kennedy out of the running.

"Obama inspired us to turn the page, and now women seem stuck in the table of contents," she said. Noting that women still make up less than 20 percent of both houses of Congress, Brazile said: "The elevator to our future growth in the Congress is still stuck in the lobby. It's time we hurry history."

Many are eagerly watching to see whether Paterson picks another woman, Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, when he names his appointment today.

That last sentence underlines an important point. If Paterson appoints a woman, isn’t this whole story negated? At the very least, the Post should be questioned for putting this victim-of-sexism story out so prematurely – before Paterson makes his pick, and before we have any real idea why Caroline withdrew.

It's not a glass ceiling

He did pick the woman

You know, Caro...to paraphrase the saying:  He just wasn't that into you.

This is mostly a function of dissing a Kennedy, rather than  woman.

So, Ms. Brazile, just because she's a woman and a Kennedy, she should be able to just ask for the seat and get it?????

Grow up.

Wasn't the pick for this

Wasn't the pick for this vacant seat mandatory for a woman? Didn't the Dims declare that several weeks ago? Just like the Senate Seat in Illinois is now a Black seat -- forever more? So say the Dims -- echoed by the MSM, and unchallenged by the so-called Republicans.

It's not about gender; it's about entitlement

Obviously, for the WaPo, Dee Dee Myers, and Donna Brazile, the mere fact that Caroline Kennedy is female qualifies her to be a US Senator (By the way, Gov. Patterson has selected NY Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the Senate seat.)

For what ever reason, Kennedy decided that at this point in her life, she wanted to enter politics, and since Clinton's seat was available, why shouldn't the seat go to her.  Watching her on camera, we can see why she wanted an appointment -- her public persona is so ridiculously weak and shallow it would never stand up to an election campaign.  I believe she truly expected that getting an appointment would circumvent the normal scrutiny that candidates are subjected to in elections.

Thankfully, Patterson wasn't snowed by the cheap glitter of Camelot.  Apparently, the WaPo was.

This morning on Fox they were discussing...

...the whole New York U.S. Senate seat situation, and who did they have on?  Why ol' Reverend Al himself.

Can someon explain to me why Fox (and especially Hannity) continue to parade this race-baiting buffon before the cameras?

I wondered the same thing.

I wondered the same thing. There is no purpose for Al anymore, hell there is no purpose for Jesse,Farrakan, The Black  Panther party either. It's time to hang up the signs history has been made! (GAG!)

MSNBC's Matthews actually

MSNBC's Matthews actually stopped the interview when she brought up the affair. He actually said that was bloggers' rumors and he does not allow information from bloggers, he wanted real news. I started laughing out loud.

Not a rumor

Other than the fact that adultery is a Kennedy family entitlement, it has been widely known for years that her marriage has had its problems.

The question is how did something like that come out? I seriously doubt it was David Paterson's intention to mention it to anyone.

This process was going to get nasty because it involved Andrew Cuomo who was married to caoline's cousin until Kerry Kennedy was caught in her own adulterous affair with another close Kennedy friend Bruce Colley. The divorce was messy and caused tremendous bad blood between Andrew Cuomo and his former best friend Robert Kennedy Jr.

Who would know better about Caroline's affair than someone inside the Kennedy family who would know first hand?

The Kennedys may have influence but in New York the Cuomos have more as well as far more political people loyal to them.

But Pinch Sulzberger?

O'Reilly said the same

O'Reilly said the same thing. He didn't want Fred Dicker (who broke the story) to elude to the affair because he said it was from the bloggosphere.  He's so full of crap; just like Matthews is.  It's been common knowledge in NY circles she's been having a relationship w/ that Pinch dude for a while (everytime I get a visual, I get nauseated.)

This whole agruement is so

This whole agruement is so silly now seeing how he appointed a woman-a woman with experience. But the way the Libs hate her. She is a supporter of the NRA.

Ricky Joe the Plumber

Oh please; the woman was a deer in the headlights

She couldn't survive 30 seconds in front of a media that already fawns over anything Kennedy.  She clearly wasn't prepared or capable of this.

Although, my wife still clings to another theory: Even if appointed in New York, she'd eventually have to face an election against real candidates, to which she'd certainly lose.   On the other hand, it's clear that Ted's seat a few miles over back in Mass will be open before too long, and the citizens of Mass will gladly vote for anything named Kennedy.  Watch for her to file a change of address card any minute now.

Well, you know......

Well, you know, maybe her withdrawl, you know, perhaps, you know, had something to do, you know, with the fact, you know, that she, you know, was completely unqualified, you know, and the fact, you know, that she was completely, you know, inarticulate and, you know, seemed to be unable, you know, to form a simple, you know, sentence while, you know, being interviewed had something, you know, with her being passed over, you know, for the senate seat.  You know.

Nope. It's strictly her

Nope. It's strictly her gender that prevented her from getting another woman's seat - which was eventually given to a third woman.

Did I mention that many liberals are obviously brain-damaged?

"I would rather be historically accurate than politically correct" ~ My husband's T-Shirt

Merit, Shmerit...

The concept of "merit" is totally foreign to the "some" that are "saying".  The only possible explanation when a minority or woman isn't selected for position XYZ is discrimination.  Other factors simply don't exist.  We saw this meme repeated constantly on CNN and MS-NBC during the presidential campaign.

Shorter WaPo and Donna Brazilla:

"After we helped destroy Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, all in our service to 'The One', we're really saddened, gosh darn it, that 'The One's' pick for New York State Senator got taken out in the same manner. Now that 'The One' is President, it's time to stop dumping on women, even though our dumping on women helped him win election."

MSM Re-definitions

The MSM can claim discrimination any time it wants -- just as long as they first re-define the terms. Glass ceiling? Of course -- but first define incompetance as a valuable commodity, and define Kennedy as = pre-ordained and most deserving.

Same thing as with queer "marriage". They're discriminated against -- if you first re-define Marriage.

Tell me -- why, exactly, do we allow the MSM to define our terms for us? I clearly don't understand it at all.

Kennedy is no Palin nor even Clinton.

There are so many reasons not to compare Kennedy to Sarah Palin or Hillary Clinton, but the most important reason is that neither of them seemed to think that they just deserved their positions, they ran for them. When most people want to enter politics they run for election. Palin and Clinton both ran for office and won. Kennedy just said I want it so give it to me!

Yiiikes

So a whining liberal has the cajones to cite Palin as a target of a glass ceiling? Tomorrow she will be abck to skewering her as a conservative.

If it weren't for double standards, liberals would have no standards at all.

Screw the Kennedys

I'm sick of the Kennedys.  Why don't they just go count their offshore money and get the hell out of politics.

Could there be a more dim-witted person than Caroline Kennedy? Geez.

Thank God Governor Paterson chose a woman who can actually utter an intelligent sentence.  I'm actually hoping this new senator does a good job.

Thank God that merit won over "aristocracy."

"Does a Glass Ceiling Persist in Politics?"

No, but those "tax havens" sure seem to be prevalent, and this time they can't focus blame onto the Republicans.

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

McCain's Mistake

McCain made a major mistake in selecting Sarah Palin. He unwittingly gave us conservatives the charismatic leader who provides the inspiration to take control of the party from the elites.

Glass ceiling...God I hate

Glass ceiling...God I hate American political cutesy phrases.

Love how the Left has co-opted the first this and that...solely their realm.

If Barney Frank and buds hadn't driven the economy into the ground through their surrogate reparations by way of the CRE, Sarah Palin would have been our first female VP.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Lefties are inconsistent

The lefties had their chance to help women "break the glass ceiling" myth, with Condi Rice and Sarah Palin. Either one of them could have been promoted as the "first woman president", but the left chose not to because both are normal, right-thinking people.
