NBC Stars Insist Obama Needs to Make Americans 'Sacrifice'

NBC News personalities were clear on Sunday’s Meet the Press that Barack Obama needs to bring the fiscal "pain" and sacrifice to the voters with higher taxes. In his interview with incoming chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, host David Gregory suggested Obama’s middle-class tax cut promises should be abandoned in the current state of affairs: "Is that the responsible thing to do on top of the debt burden that we talked about, on top of the deficit I just outlined?"

In the roundtable segment, Tom Brokaw agreed it was time for "pain" and time for an end to "ideological food fights" with Obama now that "even Republicans are cheering him on." New White House reporter Chuck Todd added that Obama’s latest speech on a stimulus plan was dry and weak, since "it didn't ask for any sacrifice from the country."

GREGORY: But Democrats were always critical of the Bush tax cuts, for instance, which were the first time that, that taxes were cut during a war. There's a $1.2 trillion deficit forecast for 2009, as you well know. There's a political element to this as well, and that is that the president-elect campaigned on a middle class tax cut. Now, the projections are if this were to become permanent tax cut beyond two years that would be part of the stimulus, that could be a $710 billion tax cut at least, at least.

EMANUEL: Mm-hmm.

GREGORY: Is that the responsible thing to do on top of the debt burden that we talked about, on top of the deficit I just outlined?

EMANUEL: Look, first of all, let's be clear that the middle class didn't really participate in the tax cuts that you talked about in the last eight years; that they have worked harder, earned less and are paying more. And the middle class have the fundamental different approach.

GREGORY: Right.

EMANUEL: And that's the change we want to bring to Washington as president.

GREGORY: But an additional $700 billion?

EMANUEL: President Obama's been very clear, you cannot have a strong economy that does not have a strong middle class. And the, the approach has been to provide the middle class with a tax cut, and also to start getting the economy moving again by making critical investments. That's why we want to create three and a half million jobs.

Gregory did walk Emanuel through the large size of all the bailout packages strung together, and he pressed Emanuel to respond to complaints about the latest stimulus package from House Minority Leader John Boehner. But the "sacrifice" talk was still all the rage. In the roundtable, Tom Brokaw suggested the time for debate and dissent is over:

Well, I think more than anytime than I can remember in all the years I've been doing this, the country is paying attention. The phrase I've been using, "The nerve endings of the country are exposed." And now, after the election and given the magnitude of the problems that we're facing, even Republicans are cheering him on. They want this to work and they're willing to set aside, you know, a lot of what we've been through for the last eight years and beyond that in terms of the ideological food fights. And they're saying, "Look, we've got to get through this together."

There is going to be some pain. The economic conditions, the objective reality is they're very, very difficult. And you can't even find a model that fits, in our lifetime, for what we're facing now. And what we've learned in the last four months, just when we think we've gotten to higher ground we go off the cliff again. And I think that has meant for the country not just a crisis of confidence, but sheer terror on the lot of a lot of people, and with good reason.

Chuck Todd agreed that the times called for Obama to demand more sacrifice from the taxpayers:

When he did his speech for the stimulus package last week, I thought it was one of his surprisingly weaker performances. It was very dry, it didn't ask for any sacrifice from the, the country, it was all about government. And it was an odd thing, because it was supposed to be a speech that was to the American people, getting them – to buy in on this, and he didn't ask for any buy-in. Now, maybe they were waiting till the inaugural address to do that, but I think that that is the number one thing a lot of Obama's supporters on the intellectual side of this are all wondering; "OK, Bush didn't do this after 9/11. We're counting on you to do this. How are you going to do it and how are you going to make that real?"

None of these stars seemed to imagine that the proposed tax cuts might be proposed for their purported ability to spur economic activity or growth, even if skewed toward people who don't actually pay income taxes. They seemed to simply oppose tax cuts as a moral issue.

"Look, first of all, let's be clear that the middle class didn't really participate in the tax cuts that you talked about in the last eight years; that they have worked harder, earned less and are paying more."

You could have fooled me.  We're squarely in the middle class and our taxes were reduced significantly with the Bush tax cuts.  I am paying less in taxes than under Bill Clinton, and that is a fact.

It's a nice talking point for the left that the middle class did not benefit from the tax cuts; however, as is often the case, the left's talking points do not reflect reality.

Even at that, I feel we are indeed sacrificing.  We have sacrificed the future economic growth of this country to bail out firms which should not have been bailed out.

Our own wholesale

Our own wholesale business has been in the toilet for a year now, many people are losing their jobs, and housing prices have plummeted - exactly how much more do these smugly superior high paid jounalists expect those of us in the middle class to "suffer and sacrifice"? I wonder how they would respond if someone suggested that it was okay for the poor to have "suffered and sacrificed"?

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

I'm done sacrificing

My wife and I are finally debt free after 4 layoffs during the Clinton years. How did we do it? We sacrificed lifestyle over the last 8 years to put every spare cent into paying off our debt. We've been out of debt for 12 months now, and I'm no longer sacrificing. It's now time to play.

Ecclesiastes 10:2 - "The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left."

Let he who would have the country sacrifice....

....write the first check.

Amen!

And, might I tangetially suggest that they also reduce their carbon footprint by simply sealing their lips and holding their noses to prevent hazardous leakage of nasty ol' CO2 that would then pollute our fragile atmosphere.  They could show their commitment to saving the planet by forebearing CO2 exhalation indefinitely!

That selfless act of "love" would cover a multitude of societal "sins."

....not to mention the plethora of societal "sins" it would prevent!!!

The phrase I've been

The phrase I've been using, "The nerve endings of the country are exposed."

That's a co-incidence:

The phrase I've been using,

"The nerve of these multi-millionaire liberal celebutards with tax shelters and trusts to hide their true income, who keep telling me I have to sacrifice by PAYING MORE FRACKIN' TAX."

"The nature of an ideology is not determined by majority vote—but by logic... The logic of environmentalism leads to a society without technology... even if various environmentalists would deny this." Ayn Rand, 1971

Brokaw thinks even all the Republicans are cheering BHO on and saying we all have to get thru this together... is he delusional or what?

And Emanuel, there is no 'President Obama' at this time.

forgot: Biden DID say we all

forgot: Biden DID say we all have to 'step up' - so I guess that means we should all cut back on charitable donations to the Biden level of 0.003% of gross income.

And just like Geithner, we should give ourselves a TAX BREAK!

We are all allowed a $34,000 tax break, according to Democrat policy.

SOL

It's like I said on another thread. The reporters in Washington don't know anything about what goes on in flyover country. They know a few Rinos, but no real conservatives. And then we have a bunch of wimpy republicans saying they want Obama to do well, they are hoping he does well, etc. This is madness. If he does well, according to what he has said he is going to do, we are all going to be ultra-screwed in this country! These people don't care that people like us are having to let go workers left and right. I have been so depressed, I had to let 5 guys who are like family to me, go Friday. I had been paying them out of money from my own savings, but I just can't keep doing it. I tried for 6 months, but now, my hubby and I both are daily deciding what we will close and who might have to go next. Excuse my language, but screw these a$$holes. I am sick of them.

God bless you, TBDI, for providing jobs as long as you could, and for actually being compassionate about your employees as I am positive you were. I'm sure it was heart-wrenching to say the least...

Olbermann at $7.5 million/year comes to mind... Sacrifice? Don't make me laugh.

If these people think pain & sacrifice is needed

why don't they inflict it on themselves?  Any of them can easily make voluntary contributions to the IRS in excess to their legal obligations.  Send that nice big check to Uncle Sam and feel righteous.

These ponderous and sanctimonious liberal media windbags always mean someone else - just like they rely on the government to make charitable "contributions" to the poor.

"EMANUEL: Look, first of

"EMANUEL: Look, first of all, let's be clear that the middle class didn't really participate in the tax cuts that you talked about in the last eight years;"

This lie is becoming tiresome.

These people are all economic illiterates.Further tax cuts would be a huge boost to the economy, if made in the right places.

We Americans already have a $225,000 tax bill hanging around our necks. If Obama's hideous bailout plan goes through, that number is going far higher. Hell of a sorry legacy to leave future generations of Americans.

The government caused this current economy, not the middle class. If anyone should be forced to sacrifice it should be the government.

Even with what you say being true, how can they say those people didn't get a break then, and they should sacrifice now?

Millionaires

So these insanely rich politicians and celebrities are crying their crocodile tears for the poor and downtrodden and the middle class.  These people are net representative of America.  Both celebrities and politicians spend like there's no tomorrow, yet those of us poor saps that they champion must make the sacrifices.

How about government make the sacrifice and cut out all the bloat.

Screw Rahm

"Look, first of all, let's be clear that the middle class didn't really
participate in the tax cuts that you talked about in the last eight
years; that they have worked harder, earned less and are paying more.
And the middle class have the fundamental different approach."

Look, Rahm, the only reason I didn't participate in the "middle class" tax cut is because local Democrats and RINOs grabbed every danged cent of my tax cut by increasing property, occupational, sewer, school, gasoline, recycling, and income taxes. They completely nullified any benefit I received from any kind of federal tax cut.

Liberals are idiots. The only bigger idiots are the people who work in the media. I'm sorry, but the kind of talk that is bantered about Washington and on t.v. is downright un-American.

Any further increase of my taxes will spell trouble for my family. I pay thousands and thousands of dollars in taxes every year.

Just cut spending you bunch of danged fools.

I'm going to add let's all

I'm going to add let's all be clear to my list of "lead-ins" that liberals use when they are about to present their own opinion as irrefutable fact.

It gets added to clearly, obviously, it's plain that, it's a fact that, the fact of the matter is, the reality is, to name a few.

Oh, and let's not forget That's a fact. at the end of their dissertation.

It's like a buffet - so much to choose from

I also have a phrase that I've been using lately: accelerating ignorance. Ignorance accelerates to escape velocity when liberals talk among themselves without any conservatives around.

Politicians (to be fair, from both sides) have committed vast sums of money, and now we discover that the money is largely untracked and utterly wasted. The people didn't want to commit that money in the first place, because it's stupid to give more money to people who blew it in the first place. Now, when that bill comes due, the politicians hand the bill to the public and indignantly claim that we need to prove our patriotism by paying taxes?

How much tax money do they think we can "contribute" to cover their promises? We're talking trillions of dollars to fund their promises. If they think that we need to balance their budget (which is what taxes do) at the expense of any productivity of our own, they've already achieved the escape velocity of ignorance.

Let's remember that principle: you don't give more money to those who blow it in the first place. Jesus even told parables about it. But now, the politicians want us to give them more money? I'm sorry - they're asking us to do exactly what Jesus told us not to do.

I have an idea

How about a nice big "sacrifice" tax increase on MSM jouralists who make 6 figures a year? To follow their own logic, that's just not fair to the rest of us middle-class peasants.

Brokaw is losing his mind. A couple weeks ago he was asking about a gas-tax to KEEP the price around $4 a gallon. And this is the same guy and the same network who ran story after story after story last summer (insert tired B-roll footage of a hand putting a gas pump into a car and the digital numbers spinning) crying about unfair and outragious the price to fill up was and that Gramma had to choose between medicine/food and gas.

Power To The People

There's got to be a way to bring power back to the people. If we could get some type of coalition started to protest the government using financial means, maybe they will begin to listen. For example:

  1. What would happen if 200,000 people boycotted paying their taxes? They couldn't possibly jail everyone.
  2. Can average citizens create legislative bills with enough petitions? If so, why not pass a bill that lowers the senate salaries to $50,000 per year? Maybe then the career candidates who are in it for a buck will leave and/or they'll get the point.
  3. People who are members of the coalition system will barter goods/services amongst each other in order to bypass having to pay taxes.
  4. Maybe we start boycotting those businesses that donate vast amounts of money to government candidates.

There's a lot we could do. All I have to say is, I wonder what people will say if Obama renigs on his promise to cut taxes for the middle class?

AMEN to THAT

We need to unionise and fight back against government encroachment. Sign me up.

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.

How about

Making the core DNC constituency--the millions and millions of Americans who pay no federal taxes at all on their income--start to contribute.  Even a couple of bucks, they'll notice, and they'll be quite vocal about it.

HMMMMMMMMM

The sacrafice shold be putting the MSM out of buisness and all them join the line at the unemployment office.

I think it's ironic

I think it's ironic that they want a sacrifice from the American taxpayer, but I bet when they go to their accountant, they look under every rock, stone and pebble for a deduction.

I wonder how much they would scream if Congress would propose they cap the MSM pay at a certain level.

If they went from the withholding method to writing a monthly check  for their taxes, the MSM would finally do their jobs and be screaming about all the wasteful spending Congress does.

Try cutting spending for a change on Capitol Hill.

The big 3 and oil companys and Wal Mart should all take their buisness offshore and show the Damocrats whoes boss.

The only sacrifices that

The only sacrifices that should be going on are with government and with that blowdried economic illiterate jackass Tom Brokaw.  Government should stop wasting taxpayer money, they should extend tax cuts and allow the private sector (the only avenue that's capable of growing the economy) to do its job.  And Tom Brokaw should sacrifice by using less Aquanet...if he just used it on his hair rather than inhaling its properties, he would save a lot of money and he wouldn't sound like such a self-important buffoon.

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." -Ronald Reagan

NBC News

I didn't that NBC has any newscasters that are stars? NBC News is just a bunch of crap! And so are their anchors.

The reality behind the hype

The reality behind the hype is that Obama wants "the rich" to sacrifice to feed his greed for spending our money.  His favored groups will not only not "sacrifice" anything, they will gain from his plundering our achievers for his pirate economics.

OK, Tom

You can have my $500 if that even happens--apparently you aren't used to living on peanut butter and ramen. I think $500 is meaningless, too, actually--I say we sit down with China, get a chunk, and give every family $50K or $100K--something tasty. Message: We blew it and don't know how to fix it but you people seem to be stumbling along okay--see how you do.

In a perfect world a Republican senator with a spine....

....when told during a debate that the rich weren't paying enough taxes, would whip out his check book and write a check for $1 million, give it to the Senate Majority leader (made out for deposit only to the US Treasury because we are talking about Harry Reid afterall) and ask who else would join him and make a personal sacrifice for the sake of the country.

Congressman Davy Crockett:

We have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right so to appropriate a dollar of the public money....

Mr. Speaker, I have said we have the right to give as much of our own money as we please. I am the poorest man on this floor. I cannot vote for this bill, but I will give one week's pay to the object, and if every member of Congress will do the same, it will amount to more than the bill asks.

Hey Prester... What a

Hey Prester...

What a perfect, perfect example of a great man and his wisdom.

I had that saved for the longest time..we also has a great article saved about all of this from years ago here at home regarding Crockett...I'd give anything to have a congress full of patriots like he was.

This country is going down the drain for the lack of likes of him, and fast.

Just wanted to say thanks.

Sacrifice? I am so sick of

Sacrifice? I am so sick of these rich, elite, msm types calling for the average Joe and Jane to sacrifice! My husband and I haven't had raises for two years, no bonus for over one year and now my husband's employer is no longer paying matching funds into his 401K. I notice he isn't calling upon the Congress (who just gave themeselves a 4% raise) to sacrifice or his rich cohorts in the msm and Hollywood.

Shut up, Brokaw!

Tom

Ok I give, you go first in sacrificing for the good of all........What you're not willing to give up your millions? Well I thought so.

This has been their

This has been their (Socialists') attitude for decades.  The problem is, they've never had the whole country to themselves to go full speed ahead on it.  Now they do.

And if it doesn't bear fruit, they'll just say "four more years" and "we must sacrifice more" and "higher taxes" and "if we just throw a little more money into it, it's just gotta work!"

(Bush went with the bail outs, not because he's a Socialist, but because it was the easy thing to do, and thought it would be a quick fix-not a permanent way of life for America.)

But we've been convinced that we have way too much compared to other countries or the lower classes who really, really, really want to work, but, darn it all, just can never seem to find and hold down jobs even in a thriving economy.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Sacrifice

What the hell does Blowchow call having 1/3 of my income confiscated by the feds?? That's not sacrifice enough for that elitist pig?

Sorry, I don't feel that I

Sorry, I don't feel that I should have to sacrifice at all. My husband and I get up every morning, go to work to earn a living, come home, and then get back up and do it all again. We didn't give billions of dollars in loans to deadbeats who can't pay them back; and we didn't spend tax payer's money hand-over-fist either. Let the tax-and-spend politicians sacrifice the millions they've made in their jobs as our "public servants."

Oh, and the paltry 1-2% raises my husband and I have received over the years can't even keep up with the cost of living, unlike Congress' automatic annual raises.
