Thomas Friedman's Power Lust: Let's Be 'China For A Day'

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman let his power lust just flow throughout the studio of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central on Thursday night. Promoting his book Hot, Flat, and Crowded, Friedman discussed his concept of America becoming "China for a day," so that his dream of a green revolution -- all those allegedly planet-saving taxes and regulations and product bans -- can be permanently enacted.

When Colbert lived up to his conservative character enough to insert that China has a totalitarian regime, Friedman simply replied "It is a measure of the frustration a lot of people in the green movement have – certainly me," that our democratic system (stuffed with troublesome believers in freedom of enterprise) blocks the passage of a eco-leftist agenda.

COLBERT: Now you have a concept called, you talk about "China for a day." What is China for a day?

FRIEDMAN: Well, China for a day is a fantasy, basically. What if we had a government here that could actually make decisions? Okay? That could actually come together, Democrats and Republicans, and make a long-term plan and pursue it?

COLBERT, with sarcasm: Are you saying the Chinese do that?

FRIEDMAN: Yeah, sometimes they do.

COLBERT: But that is a totalitarian regime.

FRIEDMAN: Mm-hmm, and it is a measure of the frustration a lot of people in the green movement have, certainly me --

COLBERT: So you say that for one day we should have a totalitarian government where some ‘benign person at the top’ [He makes quotation-mark fingers] says this is what we do?

FRIEDMAN: No. Basically what I'm saying is if only our government could get its act together and launch a green revolution with the same persistence, focus, stick-to-it-iveness and direction that China does through authoritarian means. If we could only do that through democratic means –

COLBERT: We already have a green revolution because I separate my plastics and I eat Kashi cereal so, what more are we supposed to do, Thomas Friedman?

FRIEDMAN, after laughing: What more, what more is there?

COLBERT: Thank you so much for joining us.

Late in his book, in his "China For A Day" chapter, Friedman explains his envy that China could effectively ban the thin plastic bag, and it is banned. Why can’t we be like that? But that takes not only a day of enactment, but an eternity of enforcement. Friedman isn’t worried about Day Two forward, because the liberal groups will enforce it (page 374):

...because if it is ignored by companies or local governments, a dozen public interest groups, led by the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council, will sue the violators (including the federal government) all the way to the Supreme Court. That is why being China for a day – imposing all the right taxes, regulations, and standards needed to launch a clean power system in one day – would be so much more valuable to Washington than Beijing. Because once the directions are given from above, we would be overcoming the worst part of our democracy (the inability to make big decisions in peacetime), and the next day we would be able to enjoy the best part of our democracy (the power of our civic society to make government rules stick and the power of our markets to take advantage of them.)

In a nutshell, the worst part of our democracy are the conservatives who prevent statism, and the best part of our democracy are the leftist lawyers who insure that statism is enforced.

Tom...who gets to decide  what the "right" things are...the Central Planning Committee???

Why is it liberals always think their way is the right way and they should be allowed to run roughshod over everyone because they know what's best, dammit!!

I just keep getting that Angel Lansbury flashback....powers that will make martial law look like anarchy!

Are all liberals so stupid and thoughtless?

It's as if he thinks that once a law is passed it can never be undone. Does he not know about Prohibition? Even an amendment to the US Constitution can be undone if the country feels it should be.

Why doesn't Friedman go live in China for a year ( a rural agrarian area, not a major city) and then come back and tell us if he want's us to "be China for a day".

We don't even have a democracy for crying out loud! We have a representational republic. Friedman probably doesn't understand the differences between those either.

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

It's kinda like Inspector Clouseau vs. Kato: we all try to secretly poison the other family members with tainted wheat gluten, formaldehyde or lead. Last one at the emergency room wins!

to launch a clean power system in one day

What a crock. There is no "clean power system" currently available and science has been working on it for decades. Perhaps we'll capture fairy farts and use them to power our generators, or maybe he's got some dilithium crystals he'll share with us.

Even such 'clean' energy as solar and wind cause lots of polution in the manufacturing process and the disposal of them when they wear out. [ and yes.... solar cells 'wear out', the covering fogs over and the silicon gets adulterated to the point it no longer produces a net positive current flow unless it's high noon in Arabia ]

how is this idea

"China for a lifetime for Friedman", because he up and leaves this country and goes to his idea of paradise.

And from the transcript, it looked like Colbert did a pretty good job responding to this quack. Probably had to get over the "I can't believe what this whacko is saying" reaction.

Yipee! Communism is great!

I’m sure if they got together with the members of the Weather Underground who talked about murdering 25 million people, the eco-leftists and other liberals in this nation could really make “China for a Day” a reality!

Let’s see, I’m sure with some good logistical planning, they could, in 24-hours, manage to:

·         Round up all pregnant women and force them to have abortions and sterilizations

·         Harvest organs from criminals and other “undesirables”

·         Strip Americans of their property rights

·         Close churches and imprison clergymen and faithful laity

·         Create laws making public school attendance compulsory

·         Change the tax code to “redistribute” wealth and punish productive, bourgeois members of society

·         Devastate manufacturing to ensure massive layoffs, a lowering of safety standards, and a reduction in most labor laws (i.e., 8 hour work days, livable wages, weekends, holidays, etc.)

·         Force people to work for little or nothing on rebuilding infrastructure and other make-work government pogroms

Wow!  Why haven’t we turned ourselves into a failing communist nation already.  It sounds so wonderful!

Did this country just elect Obama/Biden, or was it Soros/Ayers?

What about, "Free Tibet?"

Holy crap! We experience a hiccup in our economy and suddenly China is a desirable country for people who don't know what the hell they're gassing about.

Let's see if we can list ALL of the causes for our current crisis: Self deprecation (anti-Americanism), labor unions, liberal economic policies, corporate taxation, off the hook government spending, mark to market, reckless monetary policy, undisciplined CEO's ...

Color me raging

Color me raging red....I am filled with fury that I have at destructive over-rated creatures like Friedman who makes a nice capitalist living right here in the USA....

Move to China Friedman... take all the greenies with you...fix China while you are there, it ought to keep you busy for the rest of your louse-bound lives....therefore our problems here in the US are solved and we can flourish!

Just go-away with your false know-how knowledge.

I'm really sick of these liberals telling us how wonderful China and Cuba are...if true, then why don't they want to live there?

Tom...be careful what you wish for....you just might get it (in about 2 months....)

Yes, Tom, let's be China for a day

Bookends Friedman and Biden

Never saw two people so full of themselves so much of the time about anything and everything.  If only we could have a Cultural Revolution here to re-educate the green weenie propeller heads like Friedman.

Carbon Credits Smoke'em if you got'em!

Tom is it?

Have you heard how well the latest "5-year Plan" is working out for the Chinese? How many millions were deemed "unnecessary" during the Cultural Revolution? What have the Chinese produced in the past 100 years that wasn't copied or stolen from some other country? How's that Tianaman Square thing going? How many families live in a house the size of one of your garages, Tom?

You seem like a fairly smart man until you actually explain your thoughts. You are as flat upstairs as your books.

Friedman's Folly

Let's Be 'China For A Day'

Let’s see now;

Building missile offense.

Building offensive army.

Building more coal-powered electric plants.

Sounds like a plan to me!

Think of all the energy we

Think of all the energy we could save by using slaves instead of electricity to produce goods, another liberal retard has spoken.

watch out what you ask for

steven colbert, if you lived in china and ate kashi it probably DOES  have plastic in it..generally, tolitarian regiemes have the least reguard for thing they have alot of like china and people and russia and how they spoiled the land with atomic tests and industrial waste.

China for a Day: Friedman's Insanity Plea

What this fool does not realize is that in China, it is one culture, one people.  We are one people out of many cultures.

Pretty soon, this whole "green" thing is going to implode on itself.  There are too many variables in the theory, and with time, these are slowly failing.

His argument about plastic bags is both flimsy and stupid. Remember why we went to the plastic bags? Because trees were in jeopardy. Now these people have lost their minds.

It is funny how time heals all.  In this case, it will bring the environmentalist movement to its demise.  With time, their foolish antics and flip/flopping slowing chisels away the great stone pillars revealing the doublewide behind the facade.

Lastly, Americans love to talk. We love the dialogue, arm-chair quarterbacking, backpeddling, etc.  It is when we have to commit to these things that we step back and rethink what we were setting ourselves up for.

I doubt this loon has the fortitude to execute any of the things he pontificates.

Hi jd... I hope it

Hi jd...

I hope it implodes too...but in the meantime we are going to be paying out the ying-yang for Cap and Trade after Congress gets it passed, which they will, McC is all for it...along with other RINOs...we are forked.

"Friedman explains his envy

"Friedman explains his envy that China could effectively ban the thin plastic bag, and it is banned. Why can’t we be like that?"

He might be on to something. China says build new coal burning powerplants, and they are built....I think about one new plant each day; they say drill for oil, and oil wells are drilled. People like Friedmen tell them to go green or else, and those people are locked up.

Yeah, I'm thinking China for a day might not be so bad.....

These guys are now in

These guys are now in charge.

Commissar Friedman will soon be running one of the Obama reeducation camps for the environmentally incorrect.

In Nazi Germany the most ordinary and harmless-appearing citizens were often the most monstrous executioners for the Party.

People like Friedman, who have no idea of the terror of Communist tyranny, will unhesitatingly and without conscience send Americans to such camps if he believes it necessary to accomplish their agenda.

A Bunch of Savages in This Town

Can you imagine being so intelligent and supremely wise as to know exactly how your fellow citizens should be bagging groceries, driving home, powering their homes -- and then being forced to use the democratic process like any other regular eco destroying dope. Its sheer savagery man, sheer savagery.

Reality Check

Ok, I don't have the time but I did..I'd go over the reader's comments with a fine tooth comb and completely destroy most of the misconceptions written about China on this thread.  The ignorance is astounding.

In reference to the idiot Friedman's ignorant comment that China has banned plastic bags I will say that is an out and out lie.  China has not banned plastic bags...repeat CHINA HAS NOT BANNED PLASTIC BAGS (forgive the caps).  I can still get any size of shape plastic bag in any supermarket or convenience store in China.  What China has done is levy a fee for the bags themselves.  In other words when I'm grocery shopping and I want a large plastic bag to take home my goods then I must pay approximately 3 cents/each for the bag.  That does not constitute bag banning and in this day and age any Chinese person can afford to pay 3 cents for a bag.  The stores are still stocked with bags and all you have to do is ask, pay 3 cents and take your bag home.  Friedman is either ignorant or a liar of epic proportions.

As for the other ignorant comments on this thread I'll have to take issue with them on another day.

I am thinking...

...that you take offense to the comments that call China one of the biggest polluters on the planet. If, so can you back that up? Who gives a rip about 3 cent more per bag? If in America the total was incremented 3 cents more per bag (meaning I bought more stuff) I would leave the f'ing store and shop some where else. I guess the Chinese people don't have that option!

If an eco-Marxist parasite

If an eco-parasite thug like Thomas Friedman loves the totalitarianism of China so much, why doesn't he just take his fat a** and ridiculous toupee and F*** OFF to China instead of trying to bring China here?

But Friedman perfectly illustrates what the "Green" movement is all about.  They pretend to care about the environment, but the environment is just a vessel for promoting the Marxist ideology.

I like Tom's idea,

(sarc on) Hmmmm, let's see.....If we had a Green Revolution similar to that of Mao's Cultural Revolution then we could cull 40,000,000 leftists leaving the good ol' U.S. of A in much better shape.

OUTSTANDING idea Tom!!!

Where can I sign up for my little green book?

I wonder, what kind of pharmacueticals must one be prescribed to view reality through a prism like Friedmans?

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love youBut if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

Friedman=liberal fascist

Friedman is a perfect example of a liberal fascist...all one need do is substitute "Nazi Germany" for China and the article could have been written by a member of the German-American Bund in 1938....the Nazis were, of course, strong environmentalists and certainly knew how to "get things done"....and they had a very efficient manner of enforcement, didn't they?

Because That Is Not How Freedom Works, Fool!

What Friedman is advocating is that the will of a minority be imposed on the majority without discussion, discourse, debate or weighting of the arguments. That is not freedom. That is tyranny, plain and simple.

He, of course, does not see it as such. No, he sees it as the leadership of the sheople by the enlightened elites of which he is at least a bishop, if not a cardinal.

The source of Friedman's frustration is that America is not full of sheople who bow down in awe and reverence when he deems to grace us with his spoken or written words. No, America is populated with free and thinking people who revel in their freedom to choose and do, indeed, dare to question legends in their own minds--the Friedman elitists--who only want blind obedience.

Ignorance, our most costly commodity - paraphrased from Rush Limbaugh

Another Crazed Lib

So what this idiot is really calling for is a totalitarism government in my beloved country. He must think the end of civilization is at risk just like Al "The Green Terrorist" Bore. Friedman must be implying through that lefty talk of his that only The One will be able to make a decision and it will be a decision FOR ALL OF US? I don't think so. There is no rationale behind anything he is saying and the communists running China could give a $hit less about being green.

How about Friedman, Bore, the Obamanator and the rest of the commies move to China permanently. The fresh air they breathe in might put an end to our misery.
