WaPo Puts Obama's Sleazy Online-Donor Security Avoidance on Page...Two?

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the Obama campaign confirmed that it’s "allowing donors to use largely untraceable prepaid credit cards that could potentially be used to evade limits on how much an individual is legally allowed to give or to mask a contributor's identity." Why is this story not on Page One? (It’s in small print on the Post’s home page: "Obama Accepting Untraceable Prepaid Credit Cards.") Then there’s this nugget, buried in paragraphs nine and ten, about what spurred the Post story by reporter Matthew Mosk:

The Obama team's disclosures came in response to questions from The Washington Post about the case of Mary T. Biskup, a retired insurance manager from Manchester, Mo., who turned up on Obama's FEC reports as having donated $174,800 to the campaign. Contributors are limited to giving $2,300 for the general election.

Biskup, who had scores of Obama contributions attributed to her, said in an interview that she never donated to the candidate. "That's an error," she said. Moreover, she added, her credit card was never billed for the donations, meaning someone appropriated her name and made the contributions with another card.

Mosk first reported on the Biskup mess-up more than a week ago, on October 21. Why did it take the Post a week for the newspaper to put this story in play? Instead of putting this story on page one, the Post is highlighting two Amy Goldstein articles on the candidates' health care plans, which could have run on any day of the week.

Despite the inside-the-paper placement, the Post deserves some credit for some digging on this story, but on the other hand, it could be argued that this doesn't need to be praised, because this is what consumers expect the press to do. What the press really seems to hate to do right now is acknowledge in any direct way that the McCain-Palin campaign can't help but look like the political-reform ticket when compared to Obama's sleazy security-disabling procedures.

Here's more meat from the Mosk story:

Faced with a huge influx of donations over the Internet, the campaign has also chosen not to use basic security measures to prevent potentially illegal or anonymous contributions from flowing into its accounts, aides acknowledged. Instead, the campaign is scrutinizing its books for improper donations after the money has been deposited.

The Obama organization said its extensive review has ensured that the campaign has refunded any improper contributions, and noted that Federal Election Commission rules do not require front-end screening of donations.

In recent weeks, questionable contributions have created headaches for Obama's accounting team as it has tried to explain why campaign finance filings have included itemized donations from individuals using fake names, such as Es Esh or Doodad Pro. Those revelations prompted conservative bloggers to further test Obama's finance vetting by giving money using the kind of prepaid cards that can be bought at a drugstore and cannot be traced to a donor.

The problem with such cards, campaign finance lawyers said, is that they make it impossible to tell whether foreign nationals, donors who have exceeded the limits, government contractors or others who are barred from giving to a federal campaign are making contributions.

"They have opened the floodgates to all this money coming in," said Sean Cairncross, chief counsel to the Republican National Committee. "I think they've made the determination that whatever money they have to refund on the back end doesn't outweigh the benefit of taking all this money upfront."

The Obama campaign has shattered presidential fundraising records, in part by capitalizing on the ease of online giving. Of the $150 million the senator from Illinois raised in September, nearly $100 million came in over the Internet.

It's interesting that Mosk would acknowledge that conservative bloggers were the ones who tested Obama's online donation security, and not the "mainstream" media. Remember this when the media elites complain that the bloggers would have nothing to write about without all their "objective" reporting.

It's mind-boggling that journalists would see Obama's mind-boggling $150 million haul in September, and not immediately raise questions about it. For the most part, the number was immediately greeted as another impressive sign of the Obama juggernaut's momentum.

This goes hand in hand with Warner's posting below.

The MSM really believe if they don't report it, it didn't happen.

Smells like ACORN is 'evolving'.

It's not just about registering multiple people to vote in multiple districts. It's about figuring out ways to circumvent the stupid campaign laws too.

Since Obama is such a socialist and believes that spreading the wealth around helps people, why doesn't he spread his campaign's wealth around to McCain?

This is the 'Change' that he is speaking of. The Obama campign has been the most corrupt, immoral and illegal campaign ever. Campaigning in foreign countries makes no sense unless he is accepting donations from people in those countries. Fighting against having to show ID at a polling place before casting a vote makes no sense unless your supporters plan on casting multiple illegal votes. Call them on those positions or ask them tough questions and they call you a racist.

Credit card hackers

I speak from experience due to having managed a group who investigated this type credit card fraud at a major Corporation who fell victim to just this type activity .....at that time our web system did not verify the name typed in for an order MATCHED the credit card number typed in ....we quickly revised our system to require all credit card info matched ...in addition to requiring the security code from the back of the card ...this all insures the persons entering the data is actually holding the card ...

When it first was reported that Obama was receiving tremendous amounts of web donations in small dollar amounts I couldn't help but become suspicious....

In our case , the Secret Service and FBI uncovered a group of computer hackers located in Nigeria ....they had access to VALID credit cards  numbers they obtained from hacker websites...(these card numbers were pulled world wide ...from anyone who had purchased anything over the web ) they then used the valid card numbers to scam any company nationwide who's web order system did not have the check and balances ....these scammers obtained the names from web phone directories from all over the world or they made up names ...Mickey Mouse ...and then entered a valid credit card # ...(of course, no match)  they know/knew that when these charges appear on the card holders statement that most banks/especially International , write off all disputes under $50 ....bottom line....the  amount is deleted from the card holders account ...the bank writes off the $$$ amount as a 'cost of doing business' and the company who was scammed 'loses ' that money ...in the case of Obama ...these type invalid credit card charges to his campaign have been showing up ....scammers rely on the fact that many people do not check their statements ...

I send this recap to show how this can happen ...I understand that McCain and Clinton websites had the security blocks that prevent this type fraud....this should be a major investigation due to the amount of money in question ...

You must be based somewhere around Houston - a hotbed of Nigerian CC fraud.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

This story is huge and the

This story is huge and the media is sitting on it! What scares me more, is I tell some of my Obama supporter friends and they don't care!

Powerline blog has been ontop of this for over a week now, just out thier posts of "who is John Galt" and "what did Della Ware?"

Powerline even got to write an editorial in the New York Post this week about how Obama's people disabled all kinds of credit card fraud protections so that poeple can donate to him using info like this:

First Name: Fake

Last name: Donor

Address: 1 dollar to prove a point way

Zip code: 33333

Then pople have found that their cards were charged! How much money has the Obama people said they've found in fraud donations? I bet if they ever give a number it's just a drop in the bucket.

Another conservative in the arts

I found your name interesting.

I am a classical musician and it is just as difficult to argue conservative principles with my crowd.

Your comments about Obama supporters are spot on.

They don't care about his campaign being financed by foreign money because they believe Obama is running for "President of the World". To them the 200,000 America haters who worshipped at the Altar of Barack in Berlin mean more than the 40 million solid conservatives who live in America and want to preserve the free market system.

what a difference an election cycle makes....

the same people who believe that President Bush stole the election in Florida are now pooh poohing the massive fraud of ACORN and the illegal contributions scandal.  I've never seen anything like this.  Is the lust for power worth it?  Count me as one of the ones disappointed with the media.

No, that woman hasn't gone off the deep end...

$174,800 from one private individual?

Did she throw in a kidney, too?

Obama campaign donations

This was on Fox yesterday - one time, that I know

of, but heard no follow up on it anywhere after

that.   Have to check Newsbusters every couple

of hours to find out what's really happening in

this election.

I brought this possibility up months ago

On my blog I questioned it when Hillary raised 10,000,000 in one 24 hour period after she won the Penna. primary. I questioned the FEC regulation the let's under-200$ donations go unitemized. I also provide a link to a chapter called "Party Finance In the Wake Of BCRA"
