Newsweek's Alter Insists: Only Racism Could Prevent President Obama

America’s either racist, or it will elect Obama. So writes Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter, who focuses in his weekly column on imagining the "horror" scenario, titled "Why McCain Won: Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory: how that scenario could (but likely won't) play out." Alter’s theory in a nutshell: If McCain wins, racism is the answer. "Millions of people in the rest of the world assume that Barack Obama cannot be elected because he is black," but Alter hopes "the common sense and decency of the American people will prove the skeptics wrong."

It sounds a little like Bryant Gumbel, who declared in 1989 that his NBC News special on racial attitudes "is not going to tell you whether or not you are a racist or a liberal." Alter thinks less educated (and more racist) voters will be the difference if Obama loses:

In the end, the problem was the LIVs. That's short for "low-information voters"...Their allegiance to a candidate is as easily shed as a T-shirt. Several million moved to Obama through September and October; they'd heard he handled himself well in the debates. Then, in the last week, the LIVs swung back to the default choice: John McCain. Some had good reasons other than the color of Obama's skin to desert him; many more did not. In October, a study by the Associated Press estimated that Obama's race would cost him 6 percent. The percentage was smaller, but still enough to give the presidency to McCain.

...As it turned out, the real problem wasn't south Florida, where Hispanics came in surprisingly well for Obama. It was erosion in the critical I-4 corridor near Tampa and in the Panhandle, where the astonishing Republican margins among whites could be attributed only to race.

...But there was a reason Virginia hadn't gone Democratic since 1964. The transformation of the northern part of the state couldn't overcome a huge McCain margin among whites farther south. They weren't the racists of their parents' generation, but they weren't quite ready to vote for the unthinkable, either.

Alter can’t imagine that some voters might feel that Obama doesn’t have enough experience to be president. Apparently, that’s an excuse for racism. Alter can’t imagine that some voters might feel Obama is too liberal and will damage the economy with higher taxes. That must be another excuse for deep-seated loathing of a black president. Alter concludes with exactly the kind of didactic note that makes the "news" magazines sound like they’d much rather run the country than simply write about it:

At the start of the campaign season NEWSWEEK asked, "Is America Ready" for a black president? The answer: only if Obama proved close to a flawless candidate, and even then, we won't know for sure until Election Day. That doesn't mean Obama lost because all, or even most, McCain voters allowed race to be a factor. But enough did to change the outcome.

Democrats are despairing over the results, fearing they might never view their country in the same light again. Even many Republicans are subdued at the news of McCain's victory. Having expected him to lose, they know the GOP has now completed a sorry transition from the party of Lincoln to the party of cynicism. McCain, they're reasoning, might prove a fine president, but it shouldn't have happened like this.

It probably won't. Millions of people in the rest of the world assume that Barack Obama cannot be elected because he is black. They assume that the original sin of American history – enshrined in our Constitution – cannot be transcended. I go into next week's election with a different assumption – that the common sense and decency of the American people will prove the skeptics wrong.

Newsweek's feeling about the voters -- are they idiots or will they vote for Obama? -- is based on whether they heeded Newsweek's four years of advice to get in line to support Obama. At the beginning of 2005, Alter wrote a sugary cover story on Obama, as Brent Bozell explained:

Obama was lauded as the "incredibly pragmatic" soul of civility who is "uniquely qualified to nudge the country toward the color purple" (merging the red states and blue states). He was all about "embracing our hybrid origins and transcending our often narrow-minded past."

Even back then, Alter was so in the tank for Obama he was praising the brand-new Senator's readiness for the White House with lines like "his expert grasp of foreign policy helped him bolt from the pack."

As far as any real American

As far as any real American is concerned, the Obama campaign and the MSM have used up all their Racist free passes.

LIV, eh?

I'm not an LIV.  I'm a BIV (big information voter) and I;m definitely for McCain.  Remember, the Democraps are trying to frame this in the issue of race.  But 99% of Republican voters don't care about race.  Ummmm...........besidea wasn't it Republicans that got Whoopie and her people off the plantation?  Wasn't it Republicans who told the old CSA states they had to pass the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to be readmitted to the Union?  Wasn't it Republicans who introduced civil rights bills from 1865-1965?

And wasn't it Democraps who passed Jim Crow laws?  Wasn't it Democraps who help founded the KKK?  Wasn't it Democraps who kept blacks from going to white colleges?

And yeah, the Democraps and the media have conveniently forgotten all this.

My theory is that if Obama

My theory is that if Obama wins it will be because of LIV's

The 95+ percent of blacks  who see no farther than his skin color, plus white voters who don't care about qualifications, but just think "it's time" we had a black President.

"judged not by the color of their skin..."

This indirectly reminds me of the observation that the tenet of MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech was realized not on the day when Frank Robinson was hired, but on the day he was fired.

edit: mb - just saw your nearly identical post below which you posted before I did. (note to self: read the entire comments before posting to avoid duplicates!)

I didn't read this in a column - it's something I heard last year (on radio or TV?). I'm a baseball fan, so it might have been on a sports program.

Somebody Paid Attention During History Class..

"wasn't it Republicans that got Whoopie and her people off the plantation?"

You demonstrate a knowledge of U.S. history far above the average LIV.  If schools spent more time teaching the Reconstruction Era (and how Republicans and their families were hung from trees for helping free the slaves) attitudes and political allegiances in our society would probably be formed a lot differently.

I agree dode

My late wife was a teacher and she was very distressed at the history books she was required to use. There is little or no information on the founding fathers or actual American history. But there is a ----load of info, names etc. of the riders on public transportation in the '50s and '60s.

Well the current attitude is

Well the current attitude is "Yeah, but what have you done for us lately???"

Frankly, Tim, I am sick and

Frankly, Tim, I am sick and tired, as I know a lot of people are, of being called a racist if I won't vote for the black guy.

Not long ago I came across an opinion piece about the first black coach in college or professional sports, I forget which, who was fired part-way into his second season because the team had been doing so badly.

The theory of the piece was that ground had been broken not when the African-American coach was hired, but when he was fired,  just like any other losing coach would be.

And he didn't cry racism.

Until we all start thinking that way, racism will always be an issue.

Buying your own myths

(Note: I've heard George Will cite that quote several times, so it may have been his column. I know that's where I heard it first. )

You know why Alter thinks it's all racial? It's because he takes for granted the Media Law that: "the party in power is responsible for everything bad that happens." Since Alter is certain that this Law must be true, the only explanation of an Obama defeat must be racial. But this Media Law rests on two very shaky assumptions.

  • Republicans have been in power for the last eight years. False. The phrase "in power" is equivocal. A Republican may have been in the White House for the last eight years, but that's different from being in real power. For both presidential and congressional elections, the margin of victory was microscopic. At every moment during the last eight years, the GOP has needed Democrat support, and rarely got it. At no time did the GOP own a filibuster-proof majority. The one time a filibuster came close to being used (and would have likely won), John McCain undermined it when he organized the centrists into a Gang of 14.

To defend himself, the increasingly embarrassing Barney Frank argues that he was in the minority. How can he be blamed for anything when he was in the minority?

    1. The GOP couldn't pass laws to regulate Fannie and Freddie because the Democrats blocked them -- and now the same obstructionists want us to believe that it was the GOP's fault that the bill didn't get passed? That's not a myth - that's a lie.
    2. Then, Frank claims that as soon as he got into the majority, he managed to pass a new set of regulations (which only proves that those who were bliocking it before dropped their opposition when the Democrats took over.)
    3. And how about those regulations? They were real successful, right, Barney?
  • The blame only goes to one party. False. Anyone with an ounce of sense and reflection must know that this assumption is completely false. And yet the media propagates this assumption in every report and "analysis." They take it for granted, and they want voters to take for granted.

These clowns create their own fiction, but then believe it as reality. In normal life, we call that psychosis. In DC, they call that "change."

Yawn

Alter and his merry band of brie and cognac socialists chose, groomed, and promoted a hand-picked poster-child and the scales are falling from the voter's eyes, finally.  No wonder they wanted the victory platform built two weeks in advance.  People predicting riots if socialist Oh! loses? I predict his merry bunch will be PROMISING and PROMOTING riots by next week-end.  Keep the Peace, y'all!  Vote Oh!

It's '76 all over again

It's my sense anyway.  I was at a family gathering in Davenport, Iowa over the weekend and the feeling that most of my family had was that Obama seemed like a "good man" in the same way that Jimmy Carter was percieved as a "good man".  Trouble was, that "good man" sunk us into the worst economic downturn since before WWII.  Senator Obama's policies will do the same, probably worse.  Yet I could convince none of my loved ones of the same.  My step-mom, bless her heart, said Jimmy Carter was a good President.  My only reply was, "Are you and I living in the same country?"

I should add, my family is 98% Caucasian so Mr. Alter's theory is shown to be right up there with the theory that humans caused global warming...dumb as a box of hammers.

"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain." Official Motto of the State of Iowa

Just part of the plan

Clearly this is all just part of the plan. The complicit media is rolling out the "you're a racist if you don't vote Obama" part of the the campaign for the final ten days. You can bet your last dollar (which you probably won't have for much longer anyway) that this directive was laid out months ago. I wouldn't even be surprised if some brazen lib columnist provided a copy of the email. They have long since shed any connection with shame, and don't appear to care what they say or write any longer. We just have to hope that all of these non-racist folks that ACORN signed up aren't capable of (1) finding the polling place, (2) aren't sober enough to get on the ACORN express to the polling place, (3) can't read, and (4) don't exist.

Good luck John McCain- you'll need it...

I think this article is

I think this article is nothing but a ploy to guilt these LIV's to vote for the black man.  If you don't, you're a racist.

A Racist? You're kidding!

So if I don't vote for this Marxist I'm a RACIST?

OK, call me anything you like, but I wouldn't vote for this Marxist SOB  as my dog catcher!

STOP THE INSANITY - STOP OBAMA NOW!!!!!

Alter - stuck on stupid

Being that the MSM have deemed me an un-educated racist I guess I have no choice but to vote for McCain.

I would, therefore, like to thank the MSM for making up my mind – I couldn’t have done it without them.

I’m still waiting for their pronouncements that the 98% of blacks who vote for Obama are also racists for not voting for McCain. (I’m holding my breath)

The type of racism the idiot Alter suggests cuts both ways...

The type of racism the idiot Alter suggests cuts both ways, since many who support Obama are racists--despite all of their protestations. They would never vote for a White person because of color. What if a person is 1/2 White--what then?

I am sick of this stupid

I am sick of this stupid point of view. Obama is one of the worst, most dangerous candidates I can ever remember in my history of voting. It is for these reasons he might lose the election.

I live in the south and one of our most historically racist cities--Cullman--has elected a black mayor. This is a city that used to have a posted warning sign to blacks about not letting the sun set on them in the area.

There will always be prejudices in every society, but this country bends over backwards as a whole not to be.

and the race card is

and the race card is precisely why the media finds no Lifelong Democrats who are voting for MC Cain .. the search out the Republicans who are doing so and give them a coming out party though ... what lifelong democrat would want to set themselves up for the ridicule and scorn of being called a racist ..... those lifelong Democrats would have a multitude of Legit reasons not to vote for Oman but they know they will be given a Scarlet Letter as racist .. are there in fact people who wont vote for a Obama because he is a Black Man?... Yes of course.... are they Blacks who havent voted up untill this point in their lives now voting for Oman just because of his heritage?... yes of course .. are there whites voting for O man out of white guilt? .. damn straight

I used to be a lifelong

I used to be a lifelong Democrat--then I grew up.

Hate being Racist!

I do not like Obama because he lies, I guess that makes me a Racist.

I do not think that Black people really need to say, "Ax" when they mean, "Ask."  so I have been called a Racist.

I do not think young Black men should wear their pants between their butt and their knees.  So I'm told that proves I'm a Racist.

Well, no matter what anyone calls me, I plan on hoping that all people will be treated equal.

Say McCain loses the

Say McCain loses the election with like 45% of the vote.  Does that mean that 45% of America is racist?...guess so.  I guess I was a racist on Friday when I voted for the McCain/Palin ticket.

On Fox right now Sarah Palin

On Fox right now Sarah Palin is speaking and the crowd is chanting, "Use your brain, vote McCain!"

Dumb as a rock?  Vote

Dumb as a rock?  Vote Barack!  ;)

That rally is really cheesy, but I have to say, It's got me grinning.

Sarah breaks the ice with "Barack wants to redistribute the wealth"

Racism

http://www.associate...

Americans are angry with Washington politics. That anger is strong enough to make even a racist vote for Obama. They feel a change of color might change their bad luck.

Racism

Without Racism and the backing of 'the new party of democrat socialist' Hussein O would be an unknown dishwasher in some dump in Chicago. America has became so 'dumbed down' they won't even question why the 'chosen one' without a history (or hidden history) is running on the democrat ticket while publically harping Marxism/Socialism. His past, what is available of it, shows he has been a Marxist/Communist all of his adult life and has no friends/associates who are not at a minimum anti-American to outright terrorists. All the documentation need to bury Hussein is out there but don't count on the Lame Stream Media to 'find' it. One of his communist/socialist speaches turned up this past week and only FOX news made it news.

Millions of Americans are being kept it the dark about Hussein O's real aims by the Lame Stream Media. Funny thing is that the Lame Stream Media will be the first thing eleminated by a Hussein O regime. They should have the brains to look at previous takeovers of countries by people like Castro and Chavez who are really mild people compared to Hussein and associates.

No lame stream media hype dares ask Hussein one question about his past because they know his jackboots will make their lives miserable. 'Joe the Plumber' and the news woman in Fl found that out the hard way. Will a lot of government officials in Ohio go to jail for using government facilities and equipment to violate 'Joe the Plumber's' privacy rights (so dear to the democrats, not)? Not in this lifetime with a democrat in charge of any office in Ohio.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

Whites racist? Why haven't we heard this before???

You mean that the left believes that whites who don't vote for Obama are racists?  Wow, this is sensational!  I'm really surprised that we haven't heard this information before!

Jeff Lebowski

www.angrywhitedude.c...

Just when you think every race card in the deck

has been played - the left finds another one.  That is one big deck.  Sounds like excuse making to me.  One has to wonder why the Obama fawners aren't sitting back happy - perhaps even they don't believe the polls?

I hate the media

I have many friends, on the left and the right, and I am trying to get rid of the ones on the left, but I do not know any white Republicans that are not voting for Obama because of the color of his skin. They would not have voted for Clinton, not because she is a woman, or Biden, or Richardson, or Edwards either. They would not vote for any of the candidates that were offered by the democrats, and they did not vote for Gore or Kerry either. If there is going to be a problem with racism in voting, it will be in the white democrats that will not vote for Obama because of the color of his skin. They would agree with policy, and still not vote for him. Conservatives are in a position where we do not like a good amount of the positions of our candidate but have to go and vote to make sure the alternative choice does not destroy the things, with the help of Congress, that have made this country great. There is no difference between Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama, and Edwards when it comes to major policies, and I would not vote for any of them, based on policy not race. The more the media pushes this line of thought, the more problems we will all witness when McCain wins next week. Remember, the only fair election results that we have had since 2000 according to the media, and democrats were the 2006 elections, which they won.

Here we go again****

I know that there have to be other Latino members of this site.

(I am thinking that Hermano may be one of them)

I ask any of you who may belong to some ethnicity group other than Anglo Saxon whether you are as sick of this excuse as I am?

1. Obama has done NOTHING for the Latino communities other than to demand and expliot votes.

2. My personal dislike for the man has nothing to do with race. I don't like his tax polices, and I don't think he is the best person to handle foreign policy issues.

Now I really really really don't like his wife, but that has nothing to do with either racism or sexism on my part. Her anti white racism oozes through her pores and registeres on her face as a sour mask of hatred.

That is why I don't like her.

In the end if these polls have been horribly skewed then we are dealing with a corruption of our MSM that goes beyond bias to out and out 5th column stuff.

We have 8 days to find out.

Color

And I say again, it is time for me to admit that it is color that prevents me from voting for Barak Obama. Not the color of his skin but the Brilliant Red of his Marxist Philosophy.

I attended a Party Party

I attended a Party Party this weekend, and was pleased to see a number of my non-caucasian neighbors in support of McCain. I don't think all that many are being swayed by the color of Barrak Hussein Obama's skin, unless you consider how yellow it is with regard to our troops. Many of my neighbors have served honorably in the military, and they wouldn't give Obama the time of day. Thank God the MSM is so good at pulling the wool over their own eyes - what a shock they're in for, when people who have said one thing in public in order to avoid MSM vilification will close the curtain behind them and vote for sanity: McCain/Palin.

As for the truth about voting, racism, and skin color, I turn to fiction for a comparative hypothetical: remember the early years of the TV show "24"? The characters were vigorous in thwarting terrorists, and they were led by President David Palmer, who incidentally was a black man, played by the incredibly talented and likable Dennis Haysbert. (Nevermind that the MSM was probably floating the character as a way to gauge political reaction...) I would vote for a real man of color if he had the qualities of the character portrayed by Haysbert in the show: integrity, holding the country's interest before his own, patriotism, intelligence, decisiveness, and did I mention honesty?

Those are the qualities I will vote for, regardless of skin color. It just so happens I don't see them in either of the candidates the Demos have put forward.

Integrity is more than skin-deep.

100% Agree

I always have to laugh at how Thomas, Rice, Gonzlez, Palin are treated by the media, and the same libs that praise Obama as the first African American candidate, and how Hillary was going to break the last glass ceiling. The same accomplishments that happen from Republicans are ignored, because the are appointed based on qualification, rather than sex, or race. Colin Powell is the best example, he has been called every name in the book when he worked for Republicans, and all that it took for him to become a genius was for him to endorse Obama. I do not mind that he endorsed Obama, every body gets to make their own decision on who they support, but notice the difference in his popularity in the media and the left when he finally jumps on board with them.

Visuals, we need visuals!

Wish there was a way to quantify the shift in Powell's media popularity. Would be nice to show a chart or graph showing the rapid change from Villan to Hero, and correlate it to the event of his endorsement.

When I see the ones creating the false issue not getting called on it, I am reminded of the political thought-control and thuggery that were used by the SS and the KGB. Now it's here in one of our political parties - the National Socialist Democrat Party.

well, hell's bells...

... now I'm really confused.  If McCain wins and Obama loses, and it's because of racism, then why did Kerry, Gore, Dukakis and Carter lose?  They're white.

Let's see if I remember the

Let's see if I remember the calculus correctly:

- Kerry and Gore didn't lose--those elections were STOLEN!

- Dukakis wasn't black, but his name was spelled funny, so same thing.

- Carter just wasn't an exciting campaigner.

Let's face it, the

Let's face it, the Presidency is the last job not yet subjected to Affirmative Action.  It's about time we recognize that an unqualified black candidate is better than any white candidate.  This way we can finally begin to heal America's wounds, and put her on the track to becoming a truly great nation--like the USSR could have been if not for that spineless Gorbachev!

So what; vote your race

Here is Obama's position on race.

http://www.theobamafile.com/ObamaRace.htm

Here are interviews with Harlem LIV's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyvqhdllXgU&eurl=http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2008/10/13/howard-stern-exposes-why-so-many-people-support-obama

Blacks, Mexicans, Asians, etc., have every right to peacefully advance or defend their races in the privacy of the voting booth.  So do whites.  There are no PC voting criteria.

Obama, by his many associations, statements, and acts, really IS an enemy of the white race: Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike.  If you feel guilty in that realization, then you have been neutralized by the propaganda of neo-communists like Ayers and Rathke, and neo-columnists like Jonathan Alter.

Understand that Obama was indoctrinated in adolescence by the anti-white black racist communist Frank Davis, then he was mentored by the anti-white black racist Jeremiah Wright at his anti-white black racist church, then he became friends with anti-white black racist Muslims Louis Farakhan and Kenya's communist Raila Odinga.  These are a few examples of Obama's anti-white black racist "roots."  The last I checked, induction is still a method for finding truth.  If it walks like a duck ....  Read the above Obamafile, and you too will be convinced.

If the race of a nation's ruling class is overthrown, then that nation is overthrown, and the population is easily destroyed:  Marxism 101.  ACORN is, among other things, a black power election fraud neo-communist gang.  Now go defend yourselves, and vote your race at the polls.  It could be your last chance.

Johnathan Alter

Alter is apparently suffering from Pauline Kael Syndrome ("I don't know how Nixon (or Reagan, depending on the source) won, nobody I know voted for him").  He can only see one possibility, and can't conceive that anyone could look at things differently than he does.

This is the sign of a true idiot.

Thank you, Mr. Alter, for letting us know what a jerk you truly are.

Total blind spot...

"He can only see one possibility, and can't conceive that anyone could look at things differently than he does."

This is the most amazing thing I've observed in my run-ins with the liberal mentality - absolutely clueless that a point of view could possibly exist that isn't exactly like theirs! And they like to think favorably of themselves as "tolerant"!  Such delusion!

It's the Racist Democrats!!!!

The real irony of all of this talk about racism is that it only applies to the Democrats, not the Republicans!  Republicans have every reason not to vote for Obama, he is a Democrat/Socialist...that's the only reason they need, he could be as white as Colonel Sanders, his color is irrelevant.

If anyone doesn't vote for BHO because of his race it will be racist Democrats!  So now the election calculus becomes, "What fraction of the Democratic base is racist?"

Fraction?

I'd bet it's a lot more than just a "fraction."

Alter

The 2nd College Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary defines Marxism as "a system of thought that gives class struggle a primary role in leading society from bourgeois democracy under capitalism to a socialist society and from there to communism." Sound like any Presidential candidate you know? The "problem" with Himself is not his half-black parentage. It's his all red attitudes, that the useful idiots in the MSM refuse to report on, let alone acknowledge.

For those of you that I

For those of you that I have a bet with, you know where I stand on this subject. For those of you that don't know... I agree that Obama will lose because of racism. However, it will be the 18%-20% of rascist Democrats that will do him in!

Obama’s True Agenda

Making Fun of AGW http://giovanniworld.wordpress.com/

There are far more

There are far more experienced black figures who could make a better president than BHO.  Some of them are Ward Connerly who fought through a state proposition, and won, against affirmative action in the State of California.  Thomas Sowell, a respected, well-known social economist and another economist, Dr. Walter Williams.  Former Maryland Lt. Governor and regular Fox News contributor Michael Steele.  Alan Keyes, the conservative activist and former/current presidential candidate, who lost a senatorial race to BHO in the state of Illinois.  Even Condi Rice, the embattled State Secy, with her vast foreign affairs experience, victimized by the lame street media as guilty by association with the Bush administration.   Any of these black conservatives are far more appealing than the One empty suit the Democrats are touting.  Yes, America is ready for a black president, why not?  Just don't shove Barack "Kenyan-Indonesian" Obama Odinga down our throats.  Also,
