Networks, Papers Barely Touched John Murtha's 'Racist' Accusations; News Mags Skipped It

On Friday, October 17, news broke that Rep. John Murtha told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Barack Obama might have tough sledding in his home area: "There is no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area." Trying to add context to his remarks, Murtha later said many in Western Pennsylvania were "rednecks" several years ago. Now he’s in danger of losing his House seat. But have the national media noticed? ABC, CBS, and NBC all brushed past the remarks in stories on other, broader subjects, as did NPR. Time and Newsweek have run nothing. Even the major newspapers – The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today – have each mentioned the remarks only once, in passing.

Among the networks ABC was the worst (but also the first) to raise Murtha on the Sunday morning program This Week on October 19. But they utilized a separate, slightly less insulting interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

STEPHANOPOULOS: Potentially the biggest X-factor out there in these final two weeks is still race. Barack Obama, the first African American nominee of a major party and Congressman John Murtha of western Pennsylvania actually spoke to that directly in an editorial board meeting of The Pittsburgh-Tribune Review just the other day and I want to show you a bit of what he said.

MURTHA: Obama has got the problem with racist issue in western Pennsylvania. When I was with Hillary Clinton and I was out there campaigning for weeks, in Washington, they said that Obama would lose by four or five points. They said she was going to win by 10 points, 9.5 because in this area you're not always sure that the polls are accurate.

STEPHANOPOULOS: David [Gergen], they call it the Bradley effect after Tom Bradley. He was running for governor, African American of California. Huge lead in the polls, ended up losing. Now there are a lot of different reasons for that. A lot of pollsters don't believe there is a Bradley effect anymore but there still is that concern on the Obama team.

ABC’s World News was the only evening news program that ignored Murtha. CBS and NBC each touched on Murtha on Tuesday night, October 21, four days late. On the CBS Evening News, reporter Chip Reid offered a story mostly about the Republicans that threw in Murtha’s Tribune Review clip:

REID: Running mate Sarah Palin, still popular with the party's base, was in conservative rural Pennsylvania this weekend. One key target for the campaign: Democrats who supported Hillary Clinton but are uneasy about Obama, especially in rural areas and white working-class suburbs. Blunt speaking Democratic congressman John Murtha, referring to some of his own constituents, recently said race is an issue.

MURTHA: Obama has got the problem of the racist issue in western Pennsylvania.

REID: He later apologized, but late today, McCain responded to Murtha outside Pittsburgh.

Sen. McCAIN: I could not disagree with those critics more. This is a great part of America. This is the heartland of America. This is where people love their country and they serve it.

REID: From here McCain heads for New Hampshire...

Correspondent Andrea Mitchell was quicker on NBC Nightly News that evening, as a brief aside as she mocked Sarah Palin’s knowledge of the vice presidency. She used the more offensive Post-Gazette remarks:

MITCHELL: The vice president, according to the Constitution, presides over the Senate and has a tiebreaking vote. McCain was campaigning in Pennsylvania, where veteran Democratic congressman John Murtha recently said racism would hurt Obama.

JOHN MURTHA: He'll have a tough time, you know. There's no question western Pennsylvania is a racist area.

MITCHELL: Murtha later apologized. In our national poll most people said race was not a big factor. Eight percent said race was important. And among those people, only 4 percent said it would make them less likely to vote for Obama.

USA Today was the first newspaper to educate readers on Murtha’s remarks, on Tuesday morning, October 21, in the tenth paragraph of an unbylined story headlined "Despite candidates’ efforts, race lurks below surface." But Murtha was treated more as a pundit than a politician who put his foot in his mouth:

At the same time, reporters traveling around the country have had little trouble finding bigoted Americans who say they won't vote for Obama because he's black or biracial (his mother was white, his father black). Crude racial stereotypes remain common.

So how will the racism show itself at the polls?

Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., told Pittsburgh's Tribune-Review last week, "Obama's got a problem with the race issue in Western Pennsylvania" that could cost him 4 percentage points on Election Day. On the other hand, some analysts have discussed a "reverse Bradley effect," in which some whites vote for Obama while telling bigoted friends they didn't. Blacks, meanwhile, are expected to turn out in big numbers for Obama, potentially offsetting race-based white votes.

The other papers followed on Wednesday morning, October 22. The Washington Post blew by Murtha in paragraph 8 of a story by reporters Michael Abramowitz and Robert Barnes on page A-2:

In his final appearance of the day, in Moon Township near Pittsburgh, McCain criticized the "nasty" comments of certain politicians about western Pennsylvania, a reference to Democratic Rep. John P. Murtha's comments that the area he represents is "racist." Murtha has apologized for the comments, although he was also quoted as saying the area was once "really redneck."

"I could not disagree with these critics more," McCain said to loud cheers.

The Los Angeles Times disposed of it in paragraph 10 of an article on page A-16:

Race may be a complicating factor. U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) said last week that some in western Pennsylvania may be reluctant to vote for Obama because he is black. "There's no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area," Murtha said. He later apologized for the remark.

The New York Times team of Elizabeth Bumiller and Jeff Zeleny not only played down Murtha in their front-page article, buried inside the paper in paragraphs 13 and 14. They turned it around to mock McCain for bumbling his attack line:

Mr. DuHaime rejected comments made last week by a Pennsylvania Democrat, Representative John P. Murtha, who told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, speaking of his home base, that ''there is no question that Western Pennsylvania is a racist area.''

Mr. McCain referenced Mr. Murtha's comments in his third stop of the day, at Robert Morris University here, when he said, ''I think you may have noticed that Senator Obama's supporters have been saying some pretty nasty things about Western Pennsylvania lately.'' As the crowd booed, Mr. McCain became tangled up in the rest of his remarks. ''And you know, I couldn't agree with them more,'' he said, to silence, and then wandered around in a verbal thicket before finally managing to say, ''I could not disagree with those critics more; this is a great part of America.''

National Public Radio also just mentioned it once, at the end of a Scott Horsley report on Morning Edition on October 22, but they allowed McCain an effective soundbite:

HORSLEY: McCain trails Obama by double digits in the polls in Pennsylvania, but his aides insist the state is more competitive than that. They've devoted a lot of time and money to campaigning in Pennsylvania, a state that's gone Democratic in the last four presidential elections. Obama did run poorly in the primary in Pennsylvania, and Democratic Congressman John Murtha warned in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette interview that Obama would suffer in the Western part of the state he represents because, Murtha said, it's a racist area. McCain's aides said yesterday they hope race does not play a role in the contest. McCain himself took issue with Murtha's comment during a campaign rally outside Pittsburgh.

McCAIN: I could not disagree with those critics more. This is a great part of America. This is a heartland of America. This is where people love their country and they serve it.

Funny but Bachman's statements on "Hard Ball" had more press traction. I wonder why?

I also got a mailing from his opponent, Col. Russell.  I sent him a contribution, even though I don't live in that district. :-)

Murtha IS RACIST!

It's interesting that the media won't cover Murtha's calling people in his own state racists and rednecks.

Media JUMPS at the chance to label anyone not supporting obama a RACIST!

The bias in the media is downright shameless.

MS- Microsoft NBC

Is there still an affiliation between MS and MSNBC? And if so, whyt the hell is MS exempt from taking one to the head for their follies in this? Just wondering

  "Redneck" is a term that

"Redneck" is a term that refers to someone who spends a great deal of time outdoors in the sun working, someone like me.  I am proud to be a "redneck", it's guys and gals like me, who are farming, building, etc. who make up a large proportion of the backbone and middle class these compassionate liberals claim to represent.

Funny to me folks like "Abscam", "Haditha", Murtha and others on the left love to pull the race card when half or better of the electorate refuse to go along with the ideaology of communism and call us "rednecks". Can we start calling these, rosy-cheek, potato-nosed alcoholics, red-noses ?

The truth is the DNC has been hi-jacked by far left elitist snobs, limousine liberals who are beholden to the San-fran, N.Y. and Chicago acadamia and press corps and could care less about anyone who has to pick up a shovel, or punch a time clock to get a paycheck.

No wonder their party symbol is a Jackass. Unfortunately I believe it represents the blind, ignorant people that keep getting their news from from the MSM and keep voting  these worthless scumbags into office time and time again.

About a week ago I wrote here at NB that I had a conversation with some local Dems (I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC). I was able to turn 5 people in one fell swoop. All I did was tell them that Obama will want their guns. At the time I had no idea if it made a difference, but now I do. Today I bought our weekly Newspaper for the country I live in. One of the Dems I had talked to that day bought a 1/4 page ad on the 3rd page. Here's what it says...

VOTE!

B___ R____ for president.

I have enogh common sense to know--- WE DO NOT CLING TO GUNS!!

We hold them firmly, we hold them steady, and you pull the trigger slowly, remember no jerking!!

Mr. Barack Obama, we DO NOT cling to our guns. We own them proudly!!

God Bless America!!!

Paid for by B___ R_____ registered Democrat

If I had known it would be this effective I would have been hammering it for months. Get the word out... Obama wants our guns. It's a winner!

Your Wrong

Actually the term "Redneck" referred to Coal Miners because of the red scarves they wore around thier necks. So Mr. Mutha was not off, with his reference to his constituency. If you have ever been to Johnstown, PA you would know it was in the past to have a large coal mining industry, both of my Grandfathers who lived in that area died from Blacklung, due to working in the mining industry. Also his comment about racists in western PA was not off either, my own parents who both grew up in South Fork PA, a town next to Johnstown said although they would benefit economically under an Obama tax plan, could not vote for him because of his race.

There are so many things to

There are so many things to say about this. But here is one quote that says it all: "Blacks, meanwhile, are expected to turn out in big numbers for Obama, potentially offsetting race-based white votes".

Does the msm even listen to themselves??? Blacks aren't casting "race-based black votes", but whites are casting race-based votes? What kind of perverse logic is the msm employing here? And why the hell isn't this broadcast from the rooftops.

Another thing -- the reason McCain and Palin have to keep pounding away at this is because the msm refuses to. And then -- get this -- and then the msm has the gall to complain about McCain and Palin pounding away at this???

My head is about to explode. I swear, it is. Pass the advil and duct tape -- lots of it.

Same Old

"Blacks, meanwhile, are expected to turn out in big numbers for Obama,"

As one who has worked the polls for many years, I can tell you that blacks ALWAYS turn out in big numbers for the presidential election to vote for whoever is running on the democrat ticket. So this is nothing new.

So What Do We Do?

Okay, given the fact is the media are dedicated advocates for Obama, what do we do besides turn them off. We, conservatives, only have a few other options.

Is it possible to build a conversative news network that openly advocates "for the right from the right"? Screw "fair and balanced". We need advocates blasting news stories on TV covering events from a conservative point of view. Fox News is okay, but they are not conservative advocates.

How many conservative business owners buy advertising from the media organizations that openly work against our interest? They need credible advertising alternatives to reach roughly 60 million adult conservatives in this country.

Hi ec... Couldn't agree

Hi ec...

Couldn't agree more...this is much needed, been tried once before, NET but not enough $$$ backing...we need somebody wealthy to do this..talk about the silent majority coming out in huge numbers to support network if this ever happened.

We've talked about this very thing before here on and off...it is much needed to combat the left.

I just heard Michael Goodwin on CNN in Dobbs time slot, (he has a sub in for him tonight)....say that "people probably want socialism"...do you see how the leftists are fighting back now against the word socialism and the use of the word that has infuriated the left big time when Palin/McC use it...now they are going to work on people to say... "see this is what you really want and need"...OUTRIGHT!

It is the new talking point by some...I cannot believe it.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Hard to watch

I'm with you.....I think there are only a few options left.  Stop buying the liberal print media (which is already happening) and stop advertising on their stations or broadcasts.  Since they are determined to pander to the liberals, then let the liberals pay their bills.  Not only should conservatives not watch, but conservative political leaders should never appear on their programs.  Screw them.  No interview, no appearances, nothing.  We should do nothing to support them.

Perhaps, some smart organization will decide to target the conservative audience and advocate "from the right, for the right".

This used to the norm in this country.  Lines were clearly drawn in the media.  Some papers supported one party or candidate and another paper would support the other.  Not a bad idea, especially since the media now is totally in bed with the liberals.

ec...and I'm with you...I

ec...and I'm with you...I have said for years now on here...that I would give anything if the people with an "R" behind their name would boycott these filthy agenda driven networks...we would get somewhere with time...but noooooo...

Obama voter erosion

All these liberals like pinning this on race as the reason Democrats don't like Obama. I believe I came across the Obama voter erosion on numerous Democrats and it is eroding the entire party.

In numbers of places I look, there are Democrat signs but no Obama signs and they sure aren't on GOP lawns either.

Today I came across a very Democratic couple and they are so down on the party now they are not going to vote for any Democrats.

This is the hidden issue and it is sweeping. I ask people to remember that Obama did not win in one large state. His only wins were in the caucus states where a few thugs would go in and steal an election.
As you recall Bill Clinton uncorked in Nevada over this.

I see all these goofy polls too. One tonight on WND was headlined Obama is in a dead heat for born again Christians. What absolute rubbish.
The only person in this campaign who talks the language a born again Christian understands is Sarah Palin. This group is so tuned into God they are not going to be following someone who calls themselves the messiah in blasphemy.
As the extreme example Hitler would have a better chance of getting the Jewish vote than Obama calling himself the messiah. That is how ludicrous these polls have become in being absolute fabrications.

Obama is eroding the Democratic party base in key states. People in Pennsylvania who voted Hillary do not want this guy no more than the Ohio voters do.
One can go down the list from Jewish voters who Jesse Jackson warned what Obama was about in ruining the state of Israel to the Clinton group who sees as Bill stated, the idiocy of the Democratic leadership, and this is a huge wedge of the party not going for Obama.

My personal wonderment is all of these young college age people going around in a trance grinning for Obama when Obama has just told every boy and girl, they are going into a draft. That draft is going to either be in some peace corp nonsense where they will be shipped to some forsaken land in payment for college, dumped into picking up trash in some road ditch or drafted into the military.

This isn't some draft, but it is a draft on Marxist terms. When one understands that Russia and China draft people for the purpose that poorly trained soldiers are good fodder for enemy expensive weapons. Instead of tomahawk million dollar missiles, Obama will throw in troops to Pashtun and use them up cheaply.

I can't fathom how kids can throw away their freedom in the wonderful volunteer military and then enslave themselves into a draft where the purpose will be, build an army, and you have to use an army. That means war and death.

Obama is opening a fiasco in this and it deserves a blog which I will probably write using part of this, but Obama has real problems in voter erosion and I believe Democrats in Congress do too.

Why do you think Obama has been urging people to vote early? Because the truth is coming out, and he doesn't want these votes to go away.

Don't be so focused on

Don't be so focused on Murtha, he and the MSM are pulling a fast one. The real reason they are calling Western PA racist is because they have Philadelphia in their pocket. This is just a diversion to draw attention away from their misconduct in one city.  Check out the stats I posted before with 80% voting Democrat, an unprecedented anomalous figure that is so out of kilter with the rest of the state that due to this discrepancy one city literally decides whether PA goes in the Obama column or not.  Philadelphia has had significant problems with voter fraud.  Guess who runs the elections commission in Philadelphia?  Democrats.

There are more registered voters in Philadelphia than their are adults counted by the Census Bureau.  Guess what Acorn and their allies have been doing for years? We will see on November 4th if the feds have been successful in purging all the dead, relocated and fictitious names have been removed from the rolls to ensure a real election, not the fake one Dems have been pulling for years in PA. Why do you think Dems have been saying EVERY vote must be counted?  They mean ALL their fake ones as well.  That is what Murtha and the MSM are covering up.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

WHere perception meets reality.

We all know that, if you have a "D" next to your name, the rules are different.  How many times, during this election, do we have to point out the hypocrisy of the press, in the way they report on candidates. Murtha, Mahoney, Obama, Biden, William Jefferson, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, etc. Has anyone forgotten how the press reported on Mark Foley?  Has anyone forgotten how the press (mostly the Washington Post) reported on George Allen?  The list above all has a candidate with serious questions about them, which the press has scrupulously avoided, not only reporting on, but also questioning them about. They're not the only ones with problems, they're just off the top of my head.  If the press covered Democrats, the way they cover Republicans, the party wouldn't be measuring any drapes right now, they'd be trying to explain away all of these problems.

Biased MSM???

If I have previously posted this link, please forgive this post.  Anyway, here's an interesting article regarding supposed bias in the MSM:  http://pajamasmedia....

That's a good read. In

That's a good read.

In his townhall column today, which is mostly about the brouhaha over Gov. Palin's wardrobe expenses, Mike Gallagher has it in a nutshell:

It’s so apparent that the mainstream media has gone beyond simple,
subtle bias in favor of Obama and Democrats.  They are actually
advocating for Sen. Obama to win.

And they are blatant about it.
