Culture Clash: Madonna vs. 'Fireproof'

The tabloids and celebrity entertainment programs were ablaze with the latest news that Madonna and her British movie director husband Guy Ritchie were getting divorced after eight years of marriage. Since this was Madonna, the commercial timing of this second mangled marriage was excellent, in time to promote her latest concert tour and her debut at directing a movie, titled "Filth and Wisdom," about a rock singer working as a cross-dressing dominatrix.

But if Madonna really wanted to save her marriage, she could have seen the movie "Fireproof," the new movie starring Kirk Cameron as a firefighter who tries to save his marriage by getting rid of his selfishness and recognizing his need for Jesus. This might not seem like Madonna’s kind of popcorn movie, but it sells an absolutely revolutionary message: that love is not merely a feeling, some giggles and a good time, but a choice a person makes, a set of actions a person takes, to love someone regardless of how much they are rewarded in return.

The movie’s deepest theme reminded me of a passage from C. S. Lewis that my wife likes:

Love as distinct from "being in love" is not merely a feeling. It is a deep unity, maintained by the will and deliberately strengthened by habit; reinforced by (in Christian marriages) the grace which both partners ask, and receive, from God. They can have this love for each even those moments when they do not like each other; as you love yourself even when you don’t like yourself. They can retain this love even when each would easily, if they allowed themselves, be "in love" with someone else. "Being in love" first moved them to promise fidelity; this quieter love allows them to keep the promise. It is on this love that the engine of marriage is run: being in love was the explosion that started it. [Mere Christianity, chapter 6.]

If that message sounds so contrary to the Hollywood formula, it’s because the film wasn’t made in Hollywood. It was made in Albany, Georgia, by the Sherwood Baptist Church, for a tiny budget of a half million dollars. (They also made a small $10 million sensation with the home-made football movie "Facing the Giants" in 2006.) In its first three weeks, "Fireproof" grossed almost $17 million and landed as high as number four on the weekend top-sellers chart, despite the fact that it was only shown on about 850 screens nationwide, about one-fourth the number of your average blockbuster.

Kirk Cameron worked for no salary and no residuals (just hotel and travel expenses and a donation to his Camp Firefly charity). At the end, when Cameron kisses his movie wife, he insisted on kissing his real wife, actress Chelsea Noble, in silhouette. That’s very much in keeping with the movie’s theme and its estrangement from the plasticity of Hollywood.

Cameron plays Caleb Holt, captain of an Albany fire station, who faces a crumbling marriage to his wife Katherine, a hospital public-relations executive. After seven years of marriage, they are clearly worlds apart, with separate dreams, separate budgets, and soon separate bedrooms. They fight over tiny things like who was supposed to shop for groceries. They fight over big things – Caleb has been saving for years for a boat, while Katherine’s mother needs a wheelchair and hospital bed in her home to recover from a stroke. Caleb also seems to have a problem viewing Internet pornography, which Katherine cries over and calls "humiliating." Katherine begins flirting at the hospital with a young doctor who flatters her at lunch.

As the couple prepares to begin the legal proceedings of a divorce, Caleb’s father challenges his son to commit to a 40-day experiment he calls "The Love Dare." Caleb agrees, but mostly to please his father. He half-heartedly follows the book’s advice to avoid harsh words, to listen to his partner, to "study" her again and learn her needs and wants. But Katherine suspects this sudden effort as a cynical plot to butter her up before a legal settlement.

Halfway through the forty days, Caleb asks why he should continue to love someone who constantly rejects him, his father insists that’s what God has done for Caleb. This is where the film overtly evangelizes for the saving power of Jesus, and you clearly know this is no Hollywood production. Only then does Caleb put his full heart into saving his marriage and proving with his actions that he’s permanently putting aside his selfishness.

"Fireproof" is entertainment, not just a message movie. There’s not only the drama in fighting fires. The film might surprise viewers with its humor, especially how Cameron’s Caleb keeps embarrassing himself with angry fits in his front lawn as he’s observed by a stolid, elderly neighbor who thinks he’s "weird."

The film’s surprising box-office showing is a demonstration of the post-"Passion of the Christ" commercial potential for films with an uplifting Christian message. If the movie theaters offer this product, viewers will come. Audiences want to "vote" for these movies to be offered, to encourage the movie industry to offer films that aren’t all about surrendering to lust or bad marriages crumbling into murder.

Alex Kendrick, the pastor at the helm of these Sherwood films, wants to make movies that "tell stories that middle America can relate to. America has two cultures. There’s New York City and California -- and there’s the way the rest of the country lives."

That sounds right, but for decades now, New York and California have been talking the rest of the country into living their way. It’s inspiring to think of Albany, Georgia making this a two-way street, sending counter-cultural films that send a very different message into the most sybaritic city elites.

By the way, this movie has succeeded with very little televised publicity. The only network coverage I've seen was a September 23 interview with Cameron on the 10 am hour of NBC's Today.

I stumbled into a website

I stumbled into a website that keeps stats on movie gross revenues and many other (some sports nut must have started this) stats that are very interesting.  One thing I noted about Fireproof is that it is in less than 1,000 theaters, whereas the other recent releases are all in well over 2,500. Here's the link..  http://www.the-numbers.com/

Another good movie website is http://www.movieguide.org/

.sorry..  I can't seem to get these to show as links..  cut and paste should work..

hooray for Kirk

We are constantly bombarded with messages of unfaithfulness ... whether to our marriage partner, to governing authorities, to our children, to our churches, or ultimately to our God Who is the Authority over all.  It is a BLESSING to hear of a move and/or actors who insist on Godly faithfulness in marriage.  Even in acting, there IS a way!  I am thankful that even on this site there was the change of tee shirt ads from a girl depicted as pretending to remove her shirt.  It was always a discouragement to me to see that, but I am glad they changed that pic!  It is a blessing to see things go conservative for a change!  Even this article was a great breath of fresh air!  Thanks, Tim.

Madonna

Tim what does this article have to do with media bias? I think its great you want to promote a movie about Christian principles, but why put Madonna in the heading? What does she have to do with this movie?

Real life video games are cool

shawn

????

the media promotes Madonna (liberal lunatic) constantly while not promoting a (conservative) movie release.

And you ask where is the bias????

“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”   -Chief Justice John Roberts

Bruce

Sorry Bruce, I personally am not interested in Madonna, but to some she is still a major Icon.

If we are talking about Star Power alone, i'm sorry but having a sitcom and starrin in a movie with Dudley Moore is not on the same level.

I remember the day I stopped watching Growing Pains as well, it was the day Kirk Cameron wanted to get a co star fired because she posed in Playboy.

Also Bruce, there are plenty of good Indy films that are not promoted as much as they should, and IMO Tim was not saying this is Media Bias, he was saying Madonna should watch this movie to save her marriage.

Madonna has everything to do

Madonna has everything to do with it. She is the main promoter of everything anti-american, anti-christian and anti-family.

cocodrie

Agreed that Madonna is Anti-Christian, but not anti family or Anti American.

Madonna is a little more risque than the average person, but that is what is great about our nation, for the moment it respects free speech and all sorts of different POV and expessions

Real life video games are cool

Shawn

Either you are turning a blind eye or you are not familiar with all of the despicable things she has done and said.

crocadie

Just to be clear, I am not a Madonna fan. I am for freedom of speech and she has nothing to do with this movie

What I am about to say also has nothing to do with this article, but it is relative to our conversation. You know the first time I have ever heard of Senator McCain?

I was just thinking it my head, why does this guy want to force his opinion on us, that actually enjoy watching it, and since the participants are willing.

It was during the mid-ninetys, I was/am a pretty big fan of the UFC. I heard a Senator from Arizona called it human cockfighting and wanted to ban in altogether. Luckily it has made a hugecomeback and now more popular than ever, even close to main stream.

Now i am weary of freedom of expression and personal freedoms being taken away by the Democrats as well ie fairness doctrine, but the GOP scares me more.

Real life video games are cool

Shawn

You just expressed the most important and beautiful thing about America. Madonna is free to do as she pleases and I am free to object to it. I am free to call a spade a spade. That expression has everything to do with poker, nothing to do with race [for those in Chicago]. Conservatives tell me that I can do anything I want as long as it is legal. Liberals tell me that I can do anything I want as long as they approve of it.

You have a point cocodrie

....but i'm not sure if you read my past thread in its entirely, you might have missed how I said Senator McCain wanted to ban something that was totally legal, because he objected to it on moral grounds.

Might I also say that euthanasia is legal in Oregon,"by overwhelming voter majority"  but the feds want to make it illegal.

Medicinal marijuana, also legal in Cali, but feds want to shut it down,

So no crocodie, if conservatives don't like something on moral ground, they just want to take it away.

Real life video games are cool

shawn, your example of

shawn, your example of euthanasia is illustrative of the difference between "legal" and "moral" or "legal" and "right" if you so choose.

When there are no morals, standards are decided only by what is "legal."

Euthanasia, like abortion, finds its "acceptance" in force of law. Once something is legal, anyone opposed to it is supposed to shut up. The argument is over.

BTW, this isn't a challenge; I really would like to know: how big was the "overwhelming majority" for the law?

Motherbelt

Euthanisia is different than abortion. I did not include abortion in my defense, because the argument can be made if  "the fetus" or "baby" is affected

Euthanisia is something that would only harm an individual.

I tried googling the exact amount it passed by, but could not find it, I will let you know when I do.

Real life video games are cool

Shawn, would you rather MMA

Shawn, would you rather MMA go back to the no rules, eye-gouging, oil-checking, crotch-kicking, bare-knuckled, no holds barred style of fighting?  Or do you prefer it in its current "regulated" form?

mulerider

I like both formats,  My point is I do not believe it is the governments place to interfere in these matters.

These are personally freedoms, and the UFC is only one of a few examples I have made.

Real life video games are cool

That reads like a "present"

That reads like a "present" vote.

Mulerider

I answered your question, I said I like the fighting format either way. I also pointed out my main point was that government should not get involved in things that are none of their business.

Real life video games are cool

Good evening Ahawn

The United States Constitution guarantees everyone the right to LIFE, LIBERTY, and THE PURSUIT of HAPPINESS. Abortion and euthanasia both deprive the person affected all three of these. Liberal SCOTUS judges are passing unconstitutional laws that need to be reversed by the legislative branch. And always remember your mother was pro-life.

Good evening cocodrie

I do  not believe I endorsed abortion in any of my post on this thread. Perhaps some people find happiness the day they can stop all the pain they are feeling from the disease they have, or the fact that they cannot do the bad deed themselves because they are paralyzed from the neck down.

Real life video games are cool

i agree that abortion can

i agree that abortion can fall into the catagory of depriving one of their rights, but what if the person chooses euthanasia..theen their right is not being trample..now if you believe in god, then that is a different story, but what if you don t..if they do not believe, then they are not interested in it against god s law

Shawn - Actually a "yes" or

Shawn - Actually a "yes" or a "no" would be an answer to my question.  Nonetheless, there are only 10 states that still outlaw the UFC in its current form.  Would you care to guess the blue state to red state ratio of those 10?  Hint: Arizona is not one of them.

You may have to find a new strawman (or excuse) for this issue.

mulerider

Its like asking if I like Van Halen better with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, I like them both. For the sake of argument I will say I liked it the way it was before okay?

Real life video games are cool

Not to belabor this point,

Not to belabor this point, but John McCain is not standing in the way of the UFC hosting a fight in New York.  I believe it is your beloved liberals objecting on the basis of morality.

morals are not absolute..

morals are not absolute..  at one time if a woman showed  more than an ankle, she was immoral...but in whose eyes..certainly not mine..and why should someone who might have this view think they have the right to impose their view on me..i do not want anyone to have to watch read or listen to anything they do not like or agree with..in return all i ask is to be able to watch listen to or read what i want

Obama will kill the First Amendment

You guys are right.

We are all free to think and live the way we want to--and to express our opinions.

But if Obama becomes President, look out. He's already squelching speech and opinions that differ to his.  He's destroying folks who simply ASK QUESTIONS. Obama and his administration will kill our First Amendment freedom of speech.  We will not be free to criticize our government.  It reminds me of dictators, Hitler, banana republics, and people missing in the night.

There, I tied this Madonna story back to the election.

attorneygirl

I am very afraid of the fairness doctrine, it is ridiculous, but at the same time how will your freedom to criticize our government be implemented?

edit

Like your comparision to Hitler

: Have they killed anyone?

: threatend anyone with bodily harm?

How about your example  of implying  taking somebody away at night?

Er, No.

I'm also free to disrespect Madonna's self-serving self-worship. We cannot deny that some Points of View are poisonous to our society anymore.

Your right Saint Zero

You have the freedom to disrespect her POV as much as you like, just like you have to freedom to change the channel she is on.

Real life video games are cool

only poisonous to those who

only poisonous to those who might choose to emulate her...i dislike madonna and really do not pay attention to what she says or does but as long as it is within the law,it is her right..the movie was nice but not real life ..some marriages are doomed and all the praying in the world will not change that..i have bbeen married and faithfull to the same woman for 34 years,on our own with no religion involved..but i have seen many marriages collapse in my time ,even in my own family and praying helped them none..it takes a lot more than faith to make a marriage work

This is an issue where my

This is an issue where my conservative and libertarian ideologies collide.  I understand both points of view and each have merit.  On one side I have no problem with Madonna since she is well within her freedoms of speech and expression, regardless of the amplified medium she is given.  On the other, she does serve as a rather large representative of the progressive movement in today's society by spearheading the sexual transformation we have seen over the past couple of decades (of course I'm sure parents said that same thing when Elvis started shaking his hips).

I saw a study a while back comparing the concerns of middle school teachers from 50 years ago to today.  The top concerns of teachers decades ago included chewing gum in class, talking during lessons and generic misbehavior.  The teachers polled today highlighted sexual activity, gangs and/or weapons on campus and a lack of parent involvement.  I fully realize I come off as one of those knuckle-dragging Protestants while highlighting this study, but that is the type of progressive culture that Madonna has helped usher into our everyday thinking.

Whether that is poisonous or not is open to interpretation to each individual.  But that is the mantra by which the progressive movement operates - slow, incremental change to society's collective morals and values.  Yes, we can always change the channel.  But assuming the solution is that easy oversimplifies the issue.

And the marriage issue you bring up is a huge problem within the Christian movement.  I won't go into any great detail but my brief synopsis is believers have given in to a please-me-now subset of cultural Christiany.  It is a watered down version of the message where God has to prove His love for us by acting like a gentle grandfather who always lets us have our own way.  It's God relative; not God absolute.  But I also have issues trying to scatterplot the non-believer since they are people of "reason" who generate their own absolutes.  Why aim for the uprights when you can just move the goalposts?  We'll leave that for another day.

Madonna is a little more

Madonna is a little more risque than the average person, but that is what is great about our nation

A little more risque???? That is a masterpiece of understatement!

And her first attempt at directing:  a movie about a rock singer working as a cross-dressing dominatrix.

Why am I not surprised? She probably wrote it and will star in it.

Re: Why Madonna?

Shawn, I would not suggest this is a traditional news-bite, but it is reflective of a larger cultural trend. Madonna represents the dominant culture today -- right down to her mocking of the real Madonna and Son of many millions of Americans -- and "Fireproof" is the counter-culture.

Pardon me for diverting a little from the usual formula. I do often insist on that formula as the usual guide with our writers here. We do broaden the scope a little on the weekends with a slower news cycle.

For a more traditional look at how the media celebrate the Madonnas and the Britneys, Kristen Fyfe over at CMI just wrote up the latest Spears-promoting (highly-rated-Barbara-Walters-interview-greasing?) sleaze on ABC on a prime time "news" magazine show.

Tim, thank you for your response

I heard nothing but good things about this movie as well. It promotes good Christian values and strong marriage.

IMO these are all good things. I was just wondering why the focus on Madonna, again thank you for answering my question.

Real life video games are cool

The point of this post...

I would venture to say that it has to do with the fact that the MSM will give great publicity to the breakup of Madonna.  While, a movie promoting faithfulness and staying the course will not get a mention.  You would think it would be huge news that a movie made for 1/2 million had already grossed over 17 million, (I would venture to say much greater ROI than many hollywood productions), but I haven't seen much mention of it...

You are what you put into your mind

I love these kinds of movies.

I'm telling you, we are what we put into our minds.

I saw it on opening day.

I've tried to get friends to go see it, to no avail...

Go see this movie, you'll be glad you did.
