There's one good reason Gwen Ifill, the host of the PBS show Washington Week, is moderating the vice-presidential debate: she has a forthcoming book about Barack Obama (and other black Democrats) called The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. Ifill talks about the book project on YouTube here.
In addition to her portrait of Obama, Ifill will also investigate Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a close friend of Obama's; Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who Ifill describes as "very charismatic" in the video; and Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama. "They all chose to get into politics for the most upstanding of reasons, and they all have achieved much more than their parents could have hoped." It doesn't hurt that it's made Obama a mega-best-selling multi-millionaire author.
Ifill presents Obama and the others as the idealistic successors of Martin Luther King: "This book is about a generation of people who took seriously the achievements that their parents fought for. They knew that Martin Luther King did what he did so they can do what they’re doing, and they decided to follow through."
The obvious question in all this is whether Ifill is not merely writing about a "breakthrough" for Obama and the new generation of black Democrats, but rooting and wishing and hoping for it. The less obvious question that her liberal friends might ask: why no profiles of black female politicians in your book?
Michelle Malkin has more -- including how Ifill profiled the Obamas for the black magazine Essence.
Our 2004 Media Reality Check on Gwen's Greatest Hits is here.
UPDATE: In an interview with her former Washington Post colleague Howard Kurtz earlier this month, Ifill suggested people like Obama (with their "immense accomplishments") are somehow left out of the "lazy" racial dialogue, and expanded on the need for what supporters call affirmative action:
"We're very lazy when we think about race in this country," Ifill says. "We try to put it in a box. It's Jesse versus Al, or Jesse and Al versus everyone else," she says, referring to Jackson and Sharpton. "We love simplistic conflict. There's a whole group of people who have Ivy League degrees and immense accomplishments who actually benefited from the things their parents were fighting for."
So why aren't there more of them in the media ranks at the Republican convention?
"You have to look hard," Ifill says. "That's a failure of news organizations, mostly newspapers, to support and promote people of color."
Again, we need to ask: does Ifill want the elites to "support and promote people of color" from Ivy League colleges just in the media....or all the way to the White House?

October 1, 2008 - 06:14 ET by Indiana JoeWithout knowing anything more than this, Tim, I'd hazard a guess as to where this goes. Question #1: Does she "investigate" any other black politicians, or are these the only 3 she deems worthy of mention? <edit: delete Q2>
Assuming the answer, the "successors" of MLK's "dream" are socialistic panderers and racial grievers.

October 1, 2008 - 06:38 ET by TexndocWEEKS ago there was a story of a media conference where Ed Rendell got up front and center and said that it was "embarrassing" how MSNBC was so totally in the tank for Obama and that it was something a fair and balanced media should be ashamed of. As I recall the moderator interrupted with "Let's ask Ed Rendell to sit down now", to audience applause. As I remember one of those clapping loudly reportedly was Gwen Ifill. Anybody paying attention even then knew she was in the tank.

McCain had better get a clue. We can't win this war alone. We need a hero right now. Is it Sarah? That's an awful long shot, but it may be the only shot we have.

The debates were negotiated
October 1, 2008 - 07:16 ET by GatorgradThe debates were negotiated long ago. And McCain could have used the fact that Obama refused to do town halls against him. He could have called him out on it repeatedly. Watch Saddleback and you see why Obama does not do those. McCain lost a major atvantage with that.
If Obama refuses you hammer him as not strong enough to hanndle the open format. And challenge him at every turn to accept the invatation to take part in them. The more he refuses the more Obama looks afraid and intimidated with the format.
McCain's only (slim) chance now is to run ads showing his 2005 bill to regulate Fanne Mae and Freddie Mac juxtaposed with Frank, Dodd, Waters, and the rest extolling the virtues and solvency of Freddy Mac and Fanne Mae.
McCain is being pummeled due to poor campaigning since the convention. For what ever reason the "I will fight for you" has morphed into this weird, off track campaign. Sadly so I might ad. He had wonderful momemtum. Should of expanded on the Fight For You theme. People in crisis need that.

October 1, 2008 - 06:56 ET by jsteve2xWell, we had 12 years of relative sanity. The cork is coming out of the bottle and people like I-Fill-in-for-Obama are beginning to ooze out. Evidently we have forgotten what it was like in pre-Rush days when you couldn't find a statement in the press or on radio which paralleled conservative ieology. As I sit here listening to how homosexuals had a public "spank-in" in Sanfransissy on Sunday and now Gwen has been chosen to be "Moderator" to the VP debate, and Obama has children singing his praises (what does that remind us of) I don't reach very positive conclusions for the next 8+ years. Next time you see Obama doing a public gathering, take a look at the people around him. They look like normal people, could be your next door neighbor. This is what makes it more disconcerting. And Barney Frank in charge of "ethics". The list could go on with the blatant double-standard which flaunts itself each and every day, but large numbers of humans (I think) just don't see the hypocrisy. I guess this is what has me with the deer-in-the-headlights gaze as I attempt to explain why.

Just because she writes a book praising Obama doesn't necessarily mean she supports him for president. It's conceivable she could be supporting McCain. No, as a professional journalist, she must remain objective, and the fact she works for PBS practically guarantees her objectivity. No one should be concerned that her questions will attempt to portray Palin in a negative light. They will be totally fair and balanced. October 1, 2008 - 09:01 ET by CrashCome on ... was the McCain, Obama debate any less of a lefty campaign push for Obama than this? The follow up questions for McCain were posed as a challenge to part of his answer and virtually non existent for Obama.
Most of America has been following this "historic" election. By now knowing who McCain is and what makes him tick should be obvious even to the casual observer. Obama, on the other hand, is still a mystery. Obama answers questions which require direct decisive response, but instead babbles on with a nonspecific, generic, say nothing answers. This economic "crisis" is the October surprise. The candidate who gets it right WILL WIN THE ELECTION. Yet these two mediocre candidates (Obama more so than McCain) have done very little to show us that their ideas for a fix are better or any different than the 9% losers in congress, or Mr. Twenty Percent (our lackluster President).
I'd like to see this as a follow up to one of Obama's endless loop answers, "I understand that throughout a lifetime, over time many of us change. Your campaign has run on the mantra of 'change.' Throughout this entire campaign I cannot think of any examples of you not changing on the important issues facing our nation today. You seem to keep relationships with people for long periods at a time only to, and I quote your critics. 'throw them under the bus'. However, this only comes when you seem to have been backed into a corner. Could you please explain to us your decision making process?"

Imagine
October 1, 2008 - 11:58 ET by TheAssessorWe have truth squads, early voting for potentially illegal votes, children singing the praises of one, shills for debate moderators, lying media, communist/socialist anti-American friends & advisors, and now George Soros wants to tell us how to fix our economy!? And on top of the heap sits this incompetent bozo smiling up Fidel, Hugo and Putin. Who are Obozo's enemies again (other than Fox and NB)? They'd be my new best friends, and should be McCains. In the meantime I'll be busy stabbing myself with a dull fork to inject some bit of reality into this out of control nutdem world I can't seem to escape from. Oh.. wait.. the doctor's here with my medication...

If you're distressed about the choice of Ifill as a debate moderator, I suggest you send Janet an email right quick to express your feelings.

Ifill revelations are astounding
October 1, 2008 - 13:22 ET by Captain KirockThis is absolutely astounding. How can this woman still moderate the debate? She now has a financial interest in who wins the election. If Obama wins, her book's sales go up. If McCain wins, I bet her book won't even be published.
Is there any integrity left in American journalism?
Any journalist who defends Ifill still acting as the moderator has no ethics and is dishonest.
This is no longer just "an appearance of bias." Ifill now has a financial interest in the outcome of the election. This is why Americans hate journalists more than trial attorneys and used car salemen.
A new approach
October 1, 2008 - 13:39 ET by 10thAmendmentEven if MS Ifill wasn't in the tank for O, she has a obvious financial stake in this elections outcome.
Who is going to buy a book called The Age of Obama if Obama loses the election, thus ending his "age." How big does a conflict of interest have to be?

What else is
October 1, 2008 - 14:02 ET by afuelcoming to the front as this election goes on?
I sent off an e-mail to Debate Commission as well (thanks for e-mail addy btw).
Why won't McCain come out loudly about this, does he think shame or guilt will suddenly overwhelm the media and they will change their tune. This Ifill/Debate Commission is one big chin totally exposed and ripe for a right cross.
Whenever I hear McCain mention bipartisanship his poll numbers drop. When will he pull the trigger and do some Straight Talk ?
I'm a Mccain supporter but I dont support weakness.
NoObama ever....
Why won't McCain come out loudly about this...?
October 1, 2008 - 18:49 ET by R D HelmUhh, is it because he is a wimp?
As for pulling the trigger, I am no-longer sure he even has one, given the multiple opportunities he had during the first presidential debate.
Somehow, I think McCain is going to torpedo himself in this election.
Hell, he may already have.

CALL PBS
October 1, 2008 - 14:58 ET by GopGalI have tried calling the commission on presidential debates many times today- I can't get through. They have probably taken phone off the hook.
We should call PBS and ask that Ifill recuse herself.
